Today, with the digitalization of services, we are surrounded by platforms which have become increasingly powerful. The content ecosystem has naturally embraced this wave of platformization of the world, allowing Orange to attract both users and service providers.

In developing its strategy as both a distributor and an aggregator across its footprint, Orange has already developed this capacity.

On the one hand, over 8,4 million households are now connected to Orange TV services via a set-top box, providing them with outstanding high quality video (UHD) and audio (Dolby Atmos), and soon a new innovative TV experience with Virtual Reality. This number of users will continue to increase both with the development of current TV customer bases and also with the launch of new TV offers such as those in 2016 in Belgium and the Ivory Coast.

On the other hand, Orange attracts a large galaxy of content, both widely popular (free and pay TV channels, TVOD, SVoD) as well as emerging and

innovative (web channels, eSport, streaming video games). This development will continue throughout 2017 beginning with the renewal, by OCS, of its agreement with HBO. A special place is also reserved for Film with the 70th edition of the “Festival de Cannes” of which Orange is a longstanding major partner, and also in July with the release of “Valérian et la Cité des mille panètes”. This new film from Luc Besson was produced with the participation of Orange Studio, which has steadily built a high quality catalog along with an ambitious production/coproduction strategy.

The activities of Viaccess-Orca illustrate and accompany this evolution by offering the necessary technological tools (platforms, enablers, security) enabling operators to achieve the role of interface between content and users, and the addition of mobile, thanks to the recent acquisition of the Finnish company BigHill.

In this way, 2017 will be the beginning of the virtuous circle essential for any platform: more users, more content – more content, more users.

The year of Film

Orange has played an important role in the support and development of film for many years. As a major partner to film in all its diversity, Orange is present at all the stages of a film’s life, from the coproduction with Orange Studio, through the digital distribution on all screens with OCS and Video on Demand, right up to the theatrical release with Cineday. Orange’s commitment to film is also illustrated by the partnerships with major cinematographic events such as the “Festival de Cannes”, the “Deauville Festival of American film” or the “Festival de Comédie de l’Alpe d’Huez”.

Through its subsidiary Orange Studio, Orange affirms and pursues its commitment with the coproduction and purchase of both French and European films. Since 2007, Orange Studio has invested in the coproduction of around 10 films every year and also in film acquisition. Around one hundred films have been coproduced since its creation, some of which have received numerous awards.

Distributed in France OCS, is a bouquet of 4 thematic channels dedicated to film and series, and also a replay service. OCS offers a rich and original programme schedule including a selection of major films as well as exclusive premieres and original series. Since its creation in 2008, OCS supports French and European film production through agreements with the film industry confirming its status as a “premium” bouquet whilst increasing the offer’s attractiveness. Likewise OCS signed a 5 year agreement with all of the French professional film organisations amounting to a total investment of 179 million euros. This commitment is illustrated by the pre-purchase of original French films, “diversity” films, support for theatrical releases and also by providing bonuses for pre-purchased films depending on a film’s success.OCS is proud of this partnership which gives the satisfaction each year that Orange is contributing to the diversity and richness of French film namely when this investment contributes to its notoriety, as is the case with the film “Elle” by Paul Verhoeven with Isabelle Huppert, rewarded at the French César, at the Golden Globes and nominated at the Oscars. Lastly, with the “OCS Signature” label, OCS closely works with French series creators producing original series with a 26 minute format. “Les Grands” and “Irresponsable” new a big success on OCS channels and won awards during French fiction festivals.

This year, film is more important than ever for Orange with the 70th edition of the “Festival de Cannes”, and the theatrical release of “Valérian et la Cité des mille planetes” of which the Orange Group is a major partner namely with OCS and Orange Studio, also celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

Content and innovation

Virtual Reality

Orange has always been a market leader when it comes to offering a unique user experience with new content services. That explains why Orange is the first operator in France to provide a dedicated virtual reality service. With Orange VR Experience, the first Orange virtual reality service, OCS subscribers can enjoy their favorite movies and series in 360° immersion in a relaxing environment. Available on Samsung Gear VR, but also on iOS and Android for Cardboard devices like Orange VR1, Orange VR Experience will continue to evolve and integrate new content services, as well as a social experience allowing to watch TV content with distant friends et relatives.

Orange is also continuing to explore virtual reality by investing (thanks to Orange Digital ventures) in start-ups such as Wevr, a virtual reality content studio and distribution platform provider. Thus, Orange launched a pilot program in december 2016 giving access to a selection of native VR content provided by partners and studios. Orange VR Experience Channel is a free experimentation open to anyone equipped with HTC Vive or Samsung Gear VR headsets (and soon Oculus Rift and Google Daydream) by subscribing on www.OrangeVRExperience.com.

Orange is also working on developing technologies to broadcast live sport events in virtual reality through its subsidiary Viaccess-Orca.

In partnership with Beaumarchais-SACD, the funding for transmedia projects rewarding innovative concept since 2009 evolves and becomes in 2017 “Bourse#RealiteVirtuelle”. “Héritage”, a virtual reality project that won the 2016 edition has therefore been selected to integrate the Orange VR Experience Channel selection to highlight this evolution !
