Orange City Council

Orange City Council recognises the Wiradjuri people as the

traditional owners and custodians of this local government area.

Orange City Council and the Aboriginal community are

committed to working together in the process of reconciliation.

We support and advocate the advancement of the Aboriginal

peoples of Orange and will cooperate to ensure the preservation

of cultural practices, traditional sites and significant places.

Council supports expressions of cultural identity.

Orange City Council and the Aboriginal peoples of Orange

believe in a future characterised by social justice and community.

Together, we seek to build a society free of racism and prejudice

where Aboriginal peoples feel a strong sense of belonging and

are able to participate fully in the life of the community.

Orange City Council and the Aboriginal community will engage in

an active partnership to develop programs and services, which

meet the needs of our citizens.

This Statement of Commitment was adopted by Orange City Council on 20 October 2005.

11

Orange Aboriginal Community

Working Party

The Orange Aboriginal Community Working Party exists to provide opportunities for the local

Aboriginal community to develop capacity in order to improve quality-of-life, health, social and

economic well-being, and participation within society.

The structure and membership of the OACWP has its focus on inclusive and independent

Aboriginal organisations and groups. This requirement ensures that members provide a

grassroots, unbiased perspective on community issues.

The OACWP intends to be an effective mechanism for addressing and collaborating on social

issues affecting the Aboriginal community of Orange. The Orange Aboriginal Social Development

Plan reflects this strong ‘grassroots’ focus and continuing desire to engage the local community

in the implementation of the plan.
