Although known for being a festival, FutureEverything runs year round innovation projects. These look at the impact of technology on society, development of tech enabled cities and data projects - especially open data

Page 3: Opportunities in Data

"Open data is changing the world - people and businesses, governments and cities are putting increasing amounts of their data online free for reuse using open standards. Just as the original Web of documents changed the way we live so too will the Web of Linked Data. Manchester can be in the vanguard of a new breed of 21st century city - cities which make their data freely available providing a base for innovation and the creation of new kinds of social and economic value."

Prof. Nigel Shadbolt - Open Data InstituteCo-instigator of data.gov.uk

There are many layers within the city and data is one of them. City government produces huge amounts of data in delivery of its task. This data is often hidden but when found can be reused, remixed and repurposed - if available as open data

Page 5: Opportunities in Data

As society becomes more networked and technologised it creates a demand for the freeflow of data. The demand for data driven services creates pressure on closed data environments to open up. It’s hard to imagine that this entropic process would reverse.

Page 6: Opportunities in Data

To say that ‘there’s gold in them there hills’ is an understatement. It is just finding it. Using NHS prescription data, the Prescribing Analytics team identified potential savings of £200 million to the NHS by using generic statins

There are a number of open data catalogues now available with www.datacatalogs.org a good place to start looking. These range from international through national such as www.data.gov.uk regional and organistional

Page 8: Opportunities in Data

DataGM is an example of a regional datastore. Its purpose is to collect and aggregate data from a variety of sources within Greater Manchester

Data intermediaries - Information Design and interpretation

Page 10: Opportunities in Data

Underlying data can be complex. Information designers, data visualisers and journalists are some of the people who can help people understand the underlying data and if need be, take action.

Data Opportunities 2

An art dealer has identified that people are more likely to buy art when they move into a new property

The UK’s Land Registry is a comprehensive database of property transactions in the UK. You can download monthly datasets of all registered house transactions.

Page 15: Opportunities in Data

Using tools such as Open Refine you can analyse and ‘facet’ data enabling you to extract the relevant information for your needs

Page 16: Opportunities in Data

Other datasets can help you better understand the characteristics of a particular area, allowing you to make more informed decisions

Data Opportunities 3

An AV hire has been approached by a promoter to supply equipment for a forthcoming tour

Page 18: Opportunities in Data

Tools such as DueDil allow you to look at the integrity of companies that you do, or about to do business with. Although not all the information is free, it is a relatively quick way of understanding a companies trading history and the previous activities of it’s directors

Page 19: Opportunities in Data

Diligence might also allow you to make informed decisions as to where you locate your business. www.police.uk publishes and maps crime data

Data Opportunities 4

A venue wants to encourage footfall by feeding location specific information to potential customers

Page 21: Opportunities in Data

There are various ways that the location of a website user can be useful and made into a business opportunity.A venue might increase footfall if it could automatically provide timely travel information from user location to the venue

Page 22: Opportunities in Data

For Greater Manchester, scheduling data is readily available. Although it takes a degree of skill to integrate this into an online offering, the ability to enable people to make on the spot decisions is advantageous

A production company wants to experiment in producing personalised media content

Although experimental, Breaking Out by the BBC offers a glimpse of what is achievable through the personalisation of narrative through data. It geolocates a listener and then inserts relevant cues into the narrative.
