Scholarship Program (UGSP) offers competitive scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science health-related research. The program offers:

• Scholarship support• Paid research training at the NIH during the

summer• Paid employment and training at the NIH after

graduation

Summer ProgramsSummer Programs• Intramural Research Program of the National Institute on Drug Abuse:

Recruitment & Training Program for Under-represented PopulationsAn intramural program that provides training opportunities for students who are interested in the scientific basis of drug abuse.  A limited number of positions are available each summer.  Selection is very competitive. DEADLINE: Completed packets are due in entirety March 1 of each year.

• The Leadership Alliance Summer Research - Early Identification Program (SR-EIP)

• 8-10 week summer program that provides undergraduates with training and mentoring research and prepares them to pursue competitive applications to graduate schools. Designed as a gateway to ongoing resources, mentoring and professional networks to support all participants along their chosen career path. Designed specifically for undergraduates interested in applying to PhD or MD-PhD programs. Every element of your complete application must be received no later than midnight of February 1, 2013.

Opportunities Available Opportunities Available • Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research (SIP).

Program Description: Summer programs at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) provide an opportunity to spend a summer working at the NIH side-by-side with some of the leading scientists in the world, in an environment devoted exclusively to biomedical research. The NIH consists of the 240-bed Mark O. Hatfield Clinical Research Center and more than 1200 laboratories/research projects located on the main campus in Bethesda, MD and the surrounding area as well as in Baltimore and Frederick, MD; Research Triangle Park, NC; Phoenix, AZ; Hamilton, MT; Framingham, MA; and Detroit, MI.  NOTE: the number of positions in Phoenix, Hamilton, Framingham, and Detroit is limited.

• Internships cover a minimum of eight weeks, with students generally arriving at the NIH in May or June. The NIH Institutes and the Office of Intramural Training & Education sponsor a wide range of summer activities including lectures featuring distinguished NIH investigators, career/professional development workshops, and Summer Poster Day.

Intern Program (WHK SIP) at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) at Frederick is designed to expose high school seniors to research and administrative management in a health care environment. The scientific interns experience the basic methods of biomedical research through "hands-on" laboratory training. The students in the Internships in Support of Science/Research are assigned projects in budget, personnel, information technology, graphics and media.

Summer Science Summer Science FellowshipFellowship

late June to early AugustGeorge Mason University, University of Maryland, Johns Hopkins University offered through the APA Science Directorate.

An expenses-paid, intensive summer training program, the purpose of SSF is to allow up to 12 talented students to be placed in the psychology laboratories of some of the most outstanding researchers in the Washington, DC area for up to 6 weeks. The SSF program gives students an opportunity to explore the intellectual, personal, and social processes of scientific inquiry and to experience cutting-edge psychological research through hands-on laboratory activities. SSF offers promising students the opportunity to equip themselves with skills essential to succeed in graduate school, and gives students who plan to pursue advanced degrees in psychological science the opportunity to be mentored by nationally-known faculty.

The six-week program is expected to run from late June to early August. APA will pay students a summer salary, as well as cover all travel and living expenses. This should make the program financially feasible for most college students.

Eligibility is strictly limited to rising college seniors (what does this mean?) at US or Canadian colleges and universities. Applicants should be psychology majors, although students with related preparation may apply if they expect to enter a psychological science graduate program. International students enrolled in US or Canadian colleges are eligible; US citizenship is not required. Students from underrepresented groups are especially encouraged to apply.
