3.1 Course Selection and Course Study Plan

During the first month of enrollment, MIB students need to select appropriate courses,

work out their course study plan and complete the course registration process.

A. Online Course Selection and Study Plan Development

During the first month of enrollment (September), with the instruction from MIB

academic coordinator, students log onto SJTU Graduate Academic System

(http://www.yjs.sjtu.edu.cn/ssfw/login.jsp) to select the courses they wish to enroll for

and arrange their own study plans according to the program requirements. With the

review and approval of the program director, students should file the finalized course

study plan to ACEM Academic Office.

B. Printed Application for Course Selection

In the following cases, students must submit a printed application form for course

selection:

Course study plans cannot be carried out or cannot be implemented completely due to

certain objective conditions such as course cancellation, course adjustment, courses

Page 10: CONTENTS...2016/09/30  · ACEM offers great opportunities for the students’ global exposure. Annually, around Annually, around 150 undergraduate students and 50 graduate students

-8-

time conflict, etc.

Retaking courses

Students who need to retake courses must fill and print out the Course Retaking

Application Form and submit it to ACEM Academic Office during the first two weeks

of each semester. Please refer to 3.5 Retaking Course for more details.

3.2 Adding/Dropping Courses

During the first month of enrollment (September), students may modify their course

selection by dropping or adding courses using the online SJTU Graduate Academic System

and then finalized their course study plan. Please pay attention to the deadline specified by

ACEM Academic Office.

Once particular courses are selected, students should attend classes according to the

class schedule. Any changes to the course selection without approval are not permitted. If

students make such changes without approval, the grade received for the involved courses

will be nullified.

During the first two weeks of each semester, students can add or drop a course by

submitting a printed application signed by the requester, course instructor, and Program

Director/Thesis Supervisor (in this order) to ACEM Academic Office.

For courses which are not offered from the first two weeks of each semester, the paper

application should be signed and submitted before the commence of the second class.

3.3 Attendance and Absences

Students should attend each course in their course study plans. A request for leave of

absence needs to be given in advance if the student cannot attend the class and give the

specific reasons. Absence without approval will be regarded as skipping classes.

The instructor for each class establishes his/her own policies on how to handle

absences and how such absences affect assignments, exams, and grades. Instructors are

not required to give make-up assignments or exams. Students should consult the

instructors as soon as possible about possible absence from class. Instructors are free to

Page 11: CONTENTS...2016/09/30  · ACEM offers great opportunities for the students’ global exposure. Annually, around Annually, around 150 undergraduate students and 50 graduate students

-9-

request documentation proving the necessity of an absence.

A written request for leave of absence is required. Absence for illness should be

supported by a hospital/doctor’s certificate.

Absence within two weeks should be approved by the course instructor, MIB Program

Director/Thesis Supervisor and reviewed by the Academic Associate Dean. Absence

for over two weeks and within two months should be verified and approved by the

course instructor, MIB Program Director/Thesis Supervisor and the Academic

Associate Dean. Students must provide formal documentation to verify the reasons for

the absence to ACEM Academic Office. Absence for longer than two months should be

deemed as study suspension. The student should apply for suspension approved by

MIB Program Director/Thesis Supervisor and the Academic Associate Dean. Relevant

proof materials for all types of absence will be recorded at ACEM Academic Office.

Copies will be passed to the instructors for further reference.

3.4 Course Assessment and Academic Records

Courses are assessed in different ways: written exams are common as well as various

oral or written assignments, case studies, projects, presentations, etc. SJTU graduate

courses’ exam-score employs ten grade systems from A to D, as the table shown below:

Grading System

Chinese Grades Letter Grades Grade Points Distribution

96~100 A+ 3.3

≤20% 90~95 A 3.0

85~89 A- 2.7

80~84 B+ 2.3

— 75~79 B 2.0

70~74 B- 1.7

67~69 C+ 1.3

-10-

0~59 D (Failure) 0

One credit is designed for one lecture hour per week, lasting for 16 weeks.

The calculation of GPA is shown as below:

GPA =∑(course credit ∗ grade point for the course)

∑ (course credit)

Plagiarism is strictly prohibited at ACEM and any plagiarism behavior in course

assignment or exam, once found, will be penalized according to the university rule.

Students should follow the course instructors’ requirements of course assessments. If

students have questions about their grade after the exams, they could check it with the

instructor during his/her office hours after scores are released. In order to do this,

special requests should be sent to ACEM Academic Office. Score corrections can only

be made by the instructor. All corrections should be made in red-ink pen, with the

instructor’s signature and date beside it.

If there is justification to question the accuracy of an assigned grade, the student should

first pursue the matter with the instructor. The responsibility for the assignment of

grades is primarily on the instructor and should be settled between the student and

instructor whenever possible. Further pursuit of a grade grievance should be addressed

by SJTU Graduate School and an application should be submitted to the ACEM

Academic Office.

The official transcript is the cumulative record of courses taken and grades earned

while enrolled in the MIB Program. All courses students have taken will be recorded in

their transcript; but only some specified courses will be used for the GPA calculations.

If a course has to be retaken, all grades will be shown on the transcript, but only the last

grade will be counted in GPA calculation and the graduation requirements.

3.5 Retaking Course

If students did not complete a course with a passing grade, they must apply to retake it.

Students whose GPA did not reach 2.00 can retake the courses grading less than B (not

including B).

Students are not allowed to retake the same course more than two times.

Page 13: CONTENTS...2016/09/30  · ACEM offers great opportunities for the students’ global exposure. Annually, around Annually, around 150 undergraduate students and 50 graduate students

-11-

Students are not allowed to retake a course with satisfactory grade, where “satisfactory

grade” means the earned grade and the credits can be used to satisfy the MIB

graduation requirements.

If retaking a course is necessary, students should retake the course as early as they can

by submitting a printed application to ACEM Academic Office during the first two

week of each semester.

To retake the courses, students should fill in ‘Shanghai Jiao Tong University Graduate

Courses Retaking Application Form’ and submit to Teaching Administration Office

within two weeks after the beginning of every semester.

3.6 Seminars

Every MIB student should attend at least ten academic lectures or seminars. This must be

completed within the first two semesters. The students should take notes in the designated

Record Book and get it signed by the speaker or coordinator of each seminar.

After each lecture or seminar, the student should write a summary followed with a brief

reflection on what have been learnt in no less than 300 words. The record book and a

collection of the summary reports should be handed to the MIB Program Director before

the end of the second semester (around middle June) for grading.

5. Internship Project

Industrial and commercial enterprise practices (short as internship) is an indispensible part

in the education process of Mater of International Business (MIB) program. According to

the curriculum design of MIB Program, students enter into the stage of internship and

thesis writing only after obtaining all the credits required. Internship is a compulsory part

of MIB program. Students who do not conduct the internship or fails in the internship

cannot apply for the thesis defense.

In order to ensure quality of internship which is part of the MIB learning, we will regulate

and evaluate the process of internship as specified below.

5.1 General requirements

Time requirement. The valid internship period is from the end of the 2nd semester to

the beginning of the 4th semester. The internship duration should be no less than 10

weeks.

Organization selection. Before the 8th week of the 2nd semester, students should

prepare an updated resume for the internship and submit it to the internship program

coordinator. Some internship opportunities will be recommended by the College. At the

same time, students are encouraged to search for suitable internship opportunities in

business organizations within or outside the territory of China. The organizations that

accept the interns are expected to be legally registered for-profit or non-profit business

units (e.g., finance institutions) or business-related government institutions.

Substitution of the internship. Participation in an overseas exchange program

organized by ACEM can substitute for the internship.

Legitimacy of internship in China. According to related legal regulations, foreign

students without work experience are not allowed to work in China. In order for

international students to conduct legal internship within China, a special endorsement

must be made before taking the internship.

Page 18: CONTENTS...2016/09/30  · ACEM offers great opportunities for the students’ global exposure. Annually, around Annually, around 150 undergraduate students and 50 graduate students

-16-

5.2 Supervision during the internship process

Submission of the internship confirmation letter. The content of the Internship

Confirmation letter should include the personal information about the intern, the full

name of the company, the address of the company, the name and contact information of

the supervisor for the internship, and the signature of the supervisor and the official

seal of the company.

Submission of the Internship Report. The word amount of the Report should be

between 800-1000 words. The content should include the name of the job position, job

description, self-evaluation of the intern performance, learning and takeaways, and an

evaluation by a manager or colleagues. Students should submit the internship

confirmation letter within the 1st week of the 4th semester.

Tracking of the enterprise of the internship. In order to learn about the specifics and

performance of the student in the enterprise, the officer in charge will pay visits or

make phone calls to communicate with the employers of student internship to

understand the progress of interns.

5.3 Disciplines Regarding the Internship

In the period during which the internship and thesis writing are conducted

simultaneously, students are responsible for scheduling related issues reasonably.

Students should complete the mid-term examination, thesis proposal, thesis progress

review and defense according to the arrangements of ACEM. Students should ask for

the supervisor’s approval for the arrangements of the internship, request the supervisor

to sign the Internship Information Form. The students should not raise internship as the

reason to affect the process of the thesis preparation.

During the internship, students should abide by related regulations and requirements of

the employer, keep safety outside the campus, and keep regular communication with

the MIB program officers.

According to the scholarship management regulations, the students funded by

Page 19: CONTENTS...2016/09/30  · ACEM offers great opportunities for the students’ global exposure. Annually, around Annually, around 150 undergraduate students and 50 graduate students

6. Master Thesis

Master students must write and a formal thesis and pass an oral defense for it. Preparation

for this Master Thesis involves the following steps.

6.1 Selecting a Thesis Supervisor

Qualified students admitted to the MIB program select a thesis supervisor.

Before the end of the first semester, students are strongly suggested to be actively involved

in selecting a thesis supervisor by

Consulting ACEM faculty in their research areas of interest to identify the research

topic they are interested in,

Interacting with their fellow graduate students who are also a good source of

information concerning research projects.

By the end of the first semester, students are expected to select a supervisor and start their

thesis work.

6.2 Thesis Outline Submission

Students should submit the thesis outline at the end of the second semester (end of June).

Thesis Outline confirmed and approved by supervisor should be submitted to ACEM

Academic Office for documentation.

6.3 Mid-term Evaluation

The mid-term evaluation will be arranged at the beginning of the third semester before the

oral defense of thesis proposal. Student should fill the Mid-term Evaluation Form and

submit it to ACEM Academic Office.

To pass the Mid-term Evaluation, students should meet the basic requirements as

following:

Completed all the courses with a passing grade in the course study plan;

6.4 Thesis Proposal Defense

Upon passing the mid-term review, the students write his/her master thesis proposal by

filling in the proposal form. This document provides the following information with no less

than 1000 English words: (1) significance of the topic and a comprehensive literature

review of the state-of-the-art in the field, (2) the proposed goals, content and major

research questions you seek to address in your research, (3) methodology to be used in the

research, (4) Expected contributions to research on the topic, (5) timeline and work plan, (6)

a description of the research tasks that have been completed, (7) other issues. The proposal

form should be approved and signed by the supervisor before submission.

Students are required to orally present his/her master thesis proposal to a panel during

the first month of the third semester. Students should take notes at his/her presentation for

any questions/concerns raised by the panel. The panel will vote for the thesis proposal

unanimously.

If a unanimous vote cannot be reached, the student should contact his/her supervisor

regarding the feedbacks and suggestions given by the panel, modify the thesis proposal in

responding to the concerns raised by all the panel members. A revised thesis proposal for

second round review should be signed by the supervisor and then submitted to ACEM

Academic Office two weeks after the proposal defense.

The approved final master thesis proposal should be uploaded online. Students fail

should apply for the proposal defense in next available session.

6.5 Thesis Progress Review

Students are required to hand in the draft of the thesis (at least 50% of the contents

should be completed) and a report (at least 1000 words) approved and signed by the

supervisor to be assessed before the end of the third semester. The review panel will

evaluate students’ work as excellent, qualified or fail.

If the review panel deems it is necessary for the student to make some revisions on the

thesis report, then a resubmission of the draft thesis and the report are required for final

approval in two weeks after receiving the feedbacks.

Students who fail in the review need to revise the thesis and redo the review in next

available session and the thesis work will be postponed accordingly.

6.6 Thesis Submission and Reviews

For students who have fulfilled the coursework and internship/exchange requirements,

upon approval of the finalized thesis by the supervisor, the students are allowed to send

his/her thesis for Plagiarism Detection Test, Blind review (random sampling) and Panel

Review. Thesis submission and reviews are usually arranged during April of the forth

semester.

The Plagiarism Detection Test will be operated online. The thesis passes test if the

duplication rate is less than (not including) 15%.

If a student’s thesis is chosen to go through a blind review, a hard copy thesis will be

submitted before the specified date. Before the result of the blind review released,

students are still eligible to apply for a thesis defense. But if an unqualified result (total

grade < 60 points) is returned back after the defense, the student should revise the

thesis according to the feedbacks and redo the thesis defense in next available session.

If the panel reviewer deem it is necessary for the student to make revisions on the

thesis, the student should modify the thesis under the guidance of the supervisor

according to the suggestions from the reviewer. A revised thesis should be signed by

the supervisor and re-submitted for final approval. Students fail in the panel review

should apply for the thesis defense in next available session and the graduation will be

postponed accordingly.

6.7 Defense Application

When all the tests and reviews pass, students can apply for a thesis defense at least one

week in advance. Students should prepare a PPT beforehand. Paperwork for application

should be done in the online academic system before the deadline set by ACEM Academic

Office.

6.8 Thesis Defense

Students present his/her master thesis to the thesis defense panel. This presentation

will be open to the public. Details of dates and arrangements of the thesis presentation will

be notified by ACEM Academic Office.

The panel suggests modifications and revisions to the master thesis. The outcome of

the defense will be given to the student on the defense day.

The thesis defense panel evaluate the thesis defense unanimously. If a unanimous vote

cannot be reached, the student must respond to the concerns raised by all members of the

panel and an additional public defense in the next available session must be scheduled in

consultation with the ACEM Academic Office. The student’s graduation procedures will

postpone accordingly.

The student, no matter he/she has passed or failed in the defense, should modify the

thesis draft in light of the panel’s suggestions and recommendations.

Students need to upload and archive the final thesis according to the instructions given

by the ACEM Academic Office.
