Annual Participation Measure The 2021 Annual Participation Measure has been published.
It provides a picture of 16 to 19-year-olds in Scotland who were participating in
education, training or employment between 1 April 2020 and 31 March 2021.
The effects of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and associated lockdown
measures are likely to have affected the opportunities available to young adults
and the choices they made.
Overall, in the Annual Participation Measure 2021, there was a slight increase in the
percentage of 16-19 year olds participating, to 92.2%.
In comparison Aberdeenshire had a slight decrease from 92.3 % in 2020 to 92.2%
for 2021, thus equalling the overall percentage for Scotland.
For the first time, this year’s publication is accompanied by a new interactive report
available on the SDS website. This report, using PowerBI, will allow users to interact
with the statistics in a more visually appealing way. It provides breakdowns of the data at
a national and local authority level and by customer characteristics.

In November 2021, the United Nations COP26 Climate Summit will be arriving in
Scotland. This will be one of the biggest events of its kind ever to be hosted in our
country with 200 world leaders in attendance. There is hope that the event will result in a
truly historic agreement to limit greenhouse gas emissions and steer us clear of a climate
emergency.
The COP26 Summit provides us with a unique opportunity to recognise and celebrate
innovation in the Scottish education system and our commitment to Learning for
Sustainability. Within Scotland’s curriculum, Learning for Sustainability (LfS) is
recognised as an entitlement for all learners and a recent international study showed that
our learners are world-leading global citizens.
The Learning for Sustainability Awards support these ambitions. Help us recognise the
amazing achievements of Scotland’s people and the settings, schools and communities
that have demonstrated passion and commitment to building a socially-just, sustainable
and equitable world.
The award categories recognise the dedication and achievements of learners, practitioners, education supporters, establishments and providers and also those in
leadership positions in Scottish education. Entry to the awards is open to all publicly-funded early learning and childcare settings and schools in Scotland, including special, primary and secondary schools, and also community learning and development
providers.
Nominations open on 09 June 2021 and will close on 12 September 2021.
Winners will be announced in the Daily Record on 27 October 2021.
There will be five winners in each of the six categories. Up to five certificates of
distinction will also be issued to runners-up in each category to recognise excellent
practice.

An Open Letter to Young People
Introduction from Sandy Begbie, CEO Scottish Financial Enterprise, Chair of Young Person’s Guarantee Implementation Group, Chair of DYW
We all know that this year has been a year like no other and understand that the impact on young people has been significant.
Research undertaken with young people by Young Scot reveals anxiety that this year’s qualifications and achievements will not be valued as highly by employers in comparison to previous years. My many discus-sions with industry and employers resoundingly confirms the opposite. Instead my experience is wide-spread employer admiration for the fortitude and resilience young people have shown throughout all the challenges faced in the past year, and a solid commitment to create opportunities to help shape futures.
Official SQA results were issued on 10 August. This is an opportune moment to communicate through an ‘open letter to young people’ that Scotland’s industry and employers stand in support of them, recognise their qualifications, and congratulate them on their achievements. The content of the open letter is attached and includes a number of signatories who represent a broad range of Scotland’s employers. We couldn’t include everyone, however I know there will be many more who stand ready to endorse it.
I therefore kindly ask for your support now, to get behind our campaign and help re-build youth confi-dence at this critical time.
How to get involved
1. Communicate your support as an employer or industry organisation
– publish the open letter on your website and endorse your support of its content through social media channels.
2. Help us reach young people and their parents and carers
• show partnership support through publishing the letter on your website, and use your social media channels to communicate the message on behalf of industry and employers.
A copy of the letter can be found or linked to at sfe.org.uk.
