Using at the same time as other heating appliances that depend on the airfrom the room

Danger of toxic fumes!Great care should be taken when using the extractor in the sameroom or the same area of the house as another heating appliancethat depends on the air from the room.Such heating appliances draw in air from the room and ductexhaust gases out through a chimney or extraction ducting. Theyinclude gas, oil, wood and coal-fired boilers and heaters, continuous flow or other water heaters, gas cooktops and ovens.

The extractor draws in air from the kitchen and from neighbouringrooms. This applies to the following modes of operation:- extraction mode,- recirculation mode with a recirculation box installed outside theroom.

If there is insufficient air, an underpressure will occur. The heatingappliance may be starved of oxygen. This impairs combustion. Harmful gases could be drawn from the chimney or extractionducting back into the room. This could have potentially fatal consequences!

Page 12: Operating and installation instructions Induction cooktops · 2020. 2. 24. · Resetting the grease filter operating hours counter..... 57 Reactivating the charcoal filter ... - recirculation

Warning and Safety instructions

12

In order to ensure safe operation and to prevent gases given off bythe heating appliance from being drawn back into the room whenthe extractor and the heater are both operated simultaneously, anunderpressure in the room of 4 Pa (0.04 mbar) is the maximumpermissible.

Sufficient ventilation can be maintained by air inlets which cannotbe blocked, e.g. in windows, doors and outside wall vents. Thediameter of the inlet openings must enable sufficient ventilation. Aventilation brick alone is not generally sufficient to ensure safeventilation.

The overall ventilation condition of the dwelling must be taken intoaccount. If in any doubt, the advice of a competent builder or, forgas, a qualified gas fitter (registered with an official gas safetybody in accordance with national safety regulations) must besought.

If the extractor is being operated in recirculation mode, where theair is directed back into the room in which it is located, operating aheating appliance which depends on the room air at the same timeis not hazardous.

Correct use

The cooktop gets hot when in use and remains hot for a whileafter being switched off. There is a danger of burning until theresidual heat indicators go out.

Oil and fat can overheat and catch fire. Do not leave the cooktopunattended when cooking with oil and fat. If it does ignite, do notattempt to put the flames out with water.Switch off the cooktop and use a suitable fire blanket, saucepan lid, damp towel or similar to smother the flames.

The cooking process has to be supervised. A short term cookingprocess has to be supervised continuously.

Open flames are a fire hazard!Do not flambé food. When switched on, the extractor could drawflames into the filter. Kitchen grease deposits could ignite.

Spray canisters, aerosols and other inflammable substances canignite when heated. Therefore do not store such items or substancesin a drawer under the cooktop. Cutlery inserts must be heatresistant.

Do not heat an empty pan.

Do not heat up food in closed containers e.g. tins or sealed jarson the cooktop, as pressure can build up in the containers, causingthem to explode.

Do not cover the cooktop, e.g. with a cooktop cover, a cloth orprotective foil. The material could catch fire, shatter or melt if thecooktop is switched on by mistake or if residual heat is still present.

Page 14: Operating and installation instructions Induction cooktops · 2020. 2. 24. · Resetting the grease filter operating hours counter..... 57 Reactivating the charcoal filter ... - recirculation

Warning and Safety instructions

14

When the appliance is switched on either deliberately or bymistake, or when there is residual heat present, there is the risk ofany metal items left on the cooktop heating up, with the danger ofburning. Depending on the material, other items left on the cooktopcould also melt or catch fire. Damp pan lids might adhere to theceramic surface and be difficult to dislodge. Do not use theappliance as a resting place. Switch the cooking zones off after useand do not rely on the pan detector.

You could burn yourself on the hot cooktop. Protect your handswith heat-resistant pot holders or oven gloves when handling hotpots and pans. Do not let them get wet or damp, as this causes heatto transfer through the material more quickly with the risk of scaldingor burning yourself.

Hot cooking vapours during cooking can cause the extractor toget hot. Do not touch the casing or the grease filters until the extractor hascooled down.

When using an electrical appliance, e.g. a hand-held food mixer, near the cooktop, ensure that the cable of the electrical appliancecannot come into contact with the hot cooktop. The insulation on thecable could become damaged.

Grains of salt, sugar and sand (e.g. from cleaning vegetables) cancause scratches if they get under pan bases. Make sure that theceramic surface is clean before placing pans on it.

Even a light object can cause damage in certain circumstances.Do not drop anything on the ceramic surface.

Placing hot pans on the sensors and indicators could damage theelectronics underneath. Do not place hot pans on the sensors orindicators.

Warning and Safety instructions

15

Do not allow solid or liquid sugar, or pieces of plastic or aluminiumfoil to get onto the cooktop when it is hot, as they can damage theceramic surface when it cools down. If this should occur, switch offthe appliance and scrape off all the sugar, plastic or aluminiumresidues whilst still hot, using a shielded scraper blade suitable foruse on glass. Wear oven gloves when doing this. Allow the ceramicsurface to cool down and then clean it with a suitable ceramiccooktop cleaning agent.

Pans which boil dry can cause damage to the ceramic glass. Donot leave the cooktop unattended whilst it is being used.

Only use pots and pans with smooth bases. Rough bases willscratch the ceramic glass.

Lift pans into position on the cooktop. Sliding them into place cancause scuffs and scratches.

Because induction heating works extremely quickly, the base ofthe pan could heat up to the temperature at which oil or fat self-ignites within a very short time. Do not leave the cooktop unattendedwhilst it is being used.

Heat oil or fat for a maximum of one minute. Never use theBooster function to heat oil or fat.

For people fitted with a heart pacemaker: please note that thearea immediately surrounding the cooktop is electromagneticallycharged when it is switched on. It is very unlikely to affect apacemaker. However, if in any doubt, consult the manufacturer ofthe pacemaker or your doctor.

To prevent damage to items which are susceptible toelectromagnetic fields, e.g. credit cards, digital storage devices, pocket calculators, etc., do not leave them in the immediate vicinityof the cooktop.

Induction

28

How it worksAn induction coil is located under eachcooking zone. The coil creates amagnetic field that reacts directly withthe base of the pan and heats it up. Thecooking zone itself is heated upindirectly by the heat given off by thepan.

An induction cooking zone only workswhen a pan with a magnetic base isplaced on it (see “Induction -Cookware”). Induction automaticallyrecognises the size of the pan.

Risk of burning due to hot items! When the cooktop is switched on,either deliberately or by mistake, orwhen there is residual heat present, there is a risk of metal items placedon the cooktop heating up.Do not use the cooktop as a restingplace for anything else. After use, switch the cooktop off withthe  sensor control.

Cookware

Suitable pans

– stainless steel pans with a base thatcan be magnetised

– enamelled steel pans

– cast iron pans

Please be aware that the properties ofthe pan base can affect the evennesswith which the food heats up (e.g. whenmaking pancakes). The base of the panmust be able to distribute the heatevenly. A sandwich base made ofstainless steel is particularly suitable.

Unsuitable pans

– stainless steel pans with a basewhich cannot be magnetised

– aluminium or copper pans

– glass, ceramic or earthenware potsand pans

Testing cookware

To test whether a pot or pan is suitablefor use on an induction cooktop, hold amagnet to the base of the pan inseveral different places. If the magnetsticks, the pan is generally suitable.

Induction

29

No pan/unsuitable pan display

The set power level flashes in thenumerical keybank for the cooking zone

– if the cooking zone is switched onwithout a pan in place, or if the pan isunsuitable (non-magnetic base).

– if the diameter of the base of the panis too small.

– if the pan is taken off the cookingzone while it is switched on.

If a suitable pan is placed on thecooking zone within 3 minutes, theflashing power level will go out and youcan continue as normal.

If no pan or an unsuitable pan is placedon the cooking zone, the cooking zonewill switch off automatically after3 minutes.

Useful tips

– To make optimum use of the cookingzones, choose pans with a suitablebase diameter (see “Overview -Cooking zone data”). If the pan is toosmall it will not be recognised.

– Use only pots and pans with smoothbases. Rough bases can scratch theceramic glass.

– Always lift the pans to move them. This will help prevent scratching. Ifany scratches do appear as a resultof pans being pushed around, thiswill not affect the function of thecooktop. These scratches are normalsigns of use and are not grounds formaking a complaint.

– Please note that the maximumdiameter quoted by manufacturersoften refers to the diameter of the toprim of the pot or pan. The diameter ofthe base (generally smaller) is moreimportant.

– Where possible, use pans withvertically straight sides. If a pan hasangular sides, induction also acts onthe sides of the pan. The sides of thepan may discolour or the coatingmay peel off.

NoisesWhen using an induction cooking zone, the following noises can occur in thepan, depending on what it is made ofand how it has been constructed.

On the higher power settings, theappliance might buzz. This willdecrease or cease altogether when thepower setting is reduced.

If the pan base is made of layers ofdifferent materials (e.g. in a sandwichedbase), it might emit a cracking sound.

Whistling might occur if linked zones(see “Operation - Booster”) are beingused at the same time, and the pansalso have bases made of layers ofdifferent materials.

You might hear a clicking sound fromthe electronic switches, especially onlower power settings.

You might hear a whirring sound whenthe cooling fan switches on. It switcheson to protect the electronics when thecooktop is being used intensively. Thefan may continue to run after thecooktop has been switched off.

How the extractor works

31

The extracted air drawn into theextractor must not be routed into thebase unit, as this will damage thecabinet.

Air extraction modeThe air drawn in is cleaned by thegrease filter and directed outsidethrough a ventilation gap.

Recirculation modeThe air is drawn in and cleaned by thegrease filter. The air is then directed intothe recirculation box where it is alsocleaned by a charcoal filter. Thecleaned air is then recirculated backinto the kitchen. The necessaryaccessories are available from Miele.

Operating hours counterThe number of hours that the extractorhas been used for is stored in memory.

When the grease filter symbol or thecharcoal filter symbol lights up, theoperating hours counters are signallingthat the filters need to be cleaned orreplaced. Further information aboutcleaning and replacing the filters andresetting the operating hours counterscan be found under “Cleaning andcare”.

The operating and installationinstructions supplied with therecirculation box state that theoperating hours counter for thecharcoal filter needs to be activated. This is not necessary here.

The charcoal filter symbol  alsoappears when the appliance isoperated using extraction mode.

Tips on saving energy

32

– Use a lid whenever possible tominimise heat loss.

– Select a smaller pan when cookingsmall quantities. A smaller pan usesless energy than a larger pan withvery little in it.

– Cook with as little water as possible.

– Once food has come to the boil orthe oil in the pan is hot enough forfrying, reduce the heat to a lowersetting.

– Use a pressure cooker to reducecooking times.

– It is important to ensure that thekitchen is well ventilated duringoperation. In extraction mode if thereis insufficient airflow, the extractorcannot operate efficiently and thiscauses increased operating noiselevels.

– Always cook with the lowest possiblecooking setting. This produces fewercooking vapours, so you can use alower extractor power level andtherefore benefit from reduced energyconsumption.

– Check the power level on theextractor. A low power level is usuallysufficient. Only use the Boostersetting when necessary.

– When a large volume of cookingvapours are being produced, switchto a high power level in good time. This is more efficient than operatingthe extractor for longer to try tocapture cooking vapours which havealready been distributed throughoutthe kitchen.

– Switch the extractor off after cooking.

– Clean or replace the filters at regularintervals. Heavily soiled filters reduceperformance, increase the risk of fireand are unhygienic.

Risk of damage by pointedobjects. The seal between the cooktop andthe worktop could be damaged. The seal between the ceramicsurface and the frame could bedamaged.Do not use pointed objects forcleaning.

Do not use washing-up liquid toclean the appliance. Using washing-up liquid will not remove all soilingand residues. An invisible film candevelop that can lead todiscolouration of the ceramic glasssurface. This discolouration cannotbe removed.Clean the ceramic surface regularlywith a proprietary ceramic glasscleaning agent.

Remove any coarse soiling with adamp cloth and more stubbornsoiling with a glass scraper.

Then clean the ceramic glass surfacewith the Miele ceramic and stainlesssteel cooktop cleaner (see “Optionalaccessories”) or with a proprietaryceramic glass cleaner applied withpaper towel or a clean cloth. Do notapply the cleaner while the cooktop isstill hot, as this can result in marking. Please follow the cleaning agentmanufacturer's instructions.

Finally wipe the cooktop with a dampcloth and dry it with a soft, dry cloth.

Residues can burn onto the cooktopthe next time it is used and causedamage to the glass ceramic surface.Ensure that all cleaner residues areremoved.

Spots caused by limescale, waterand aluminium residues (spots with ametallic appearance) can be removedusing the Miele ceramic and stainlesssteel cooktop cleaner.

Risk of burning due to hotsurfaces! The cooking zones are hot duringuse.Wear oven gloves when removingresidues of sugar, plastic oraluminium foil from a hot cooktopwith a glass scraper.

Problem solving guide

58

With the help of the following guide, minor faults in the performance of theappliance, some of which may result from incorrect operation, can be remediedwithout contacting Miele. This will save you time and money because you won'tneed a service call.

Please note that a call-out charge will be applied to unnecessary service visitswhere the problem could have been rectified as described in these operatinginstructions.

Problem Possible cause and remedy

The cooktop or cookingzones do not switch on.

There is no power to the cooktop. Check if the circuit breaker has tripped. Contact

an electrician or Miele (for the minimum fuserating, see data plate).

There may be a technical fault. Disconnect the appliance from the mains

electricity supply for approx. 1 minute. To do this:– switch off at the wall socket and withdraw the

plug, or– switch off at the residual current device.

If, after switching the circuit breaker or residualcurrent device back on, the appliance will still notswitch on, contact a qualified electrician or Miele.

A smell and vapours aregiven off when the newappliance is being used.

The metal components have a protective coating. When the appliance is used for the first time, thiscauses a smell and possibly also vapour. Thematerial from which the induction coils are made alsogives off a smell in the first few hours of operation. This smell will be less noticeable with eachsubsequent use before dissipating completely. Thesmell and any vapours given off do not indicate afaulty connection or appliance and they are nothazardous to health.

The power levelselected is flashing.

There is no pan on the cooking zone, or the pan isunsuitable. Use suitable pans (see “Induction - Cookware”).

After the cooktop hasbeen switched on appears in the timerdisplay for a fewseconds.

The system lock or safety lock is activated. Deactivate the system lock or safety lock (see

Surface-mounted installation Create the worktop cut-out.

Remember to maintain the minimumsafety distances (see “Installation –Safety distances”).

Seal the cut surfaces of woodenworktops with a suitable sealant toavoid swelling caused by moisture. The sealant must be heat-resistant.

Make sure the sealant does notcome into contact with the topsurface of the worktop.

Attach the sealing strip providedunderneath the edge of the cooktop.

Feed the mains connection cabledown through the worktop cut-out.

Place the cooktop centrally in thecut-out. When doing this, make surethat the seal of the appliance sitsflush with the worktop on all sides. This is important to ensure aneffective seal with the worktop.

Do not use any additional sealant(e.g. silicone).

If the seal does not meet the worktopcorrectly on the corners, the cornerradius (≤ R4) can be carefully scribedto suit.

Connect the cooktop to the mainselectricity supply.

Check that the cooktop works.

Flush-fit installation Create the worktop cut-out.

Remember to maintain the minimumsafety distances (see “Installation –Safety distances”).

Solid wood, tiled and glass worktops:Fix a wooden frame 5.5 mm belowthe top edge of the worktop (see thediagram in “Installation” – “Installationdimensions – Flush”).

Attach the sealing strip providedunderneath the edge of the cooktop.

Feed the mains connection cabledown through the worktop cut-out.

Centre the cooktop in the cut-out.

The gap between the ceramic surfaceand the worktop must be at least2 mm wide. This is required so thatthe cooktop can be sealed.

Connect the cooktop to the mainselectricity supply.

Check that the cooktop works.

Seal the gap between the cooktopand worktop with a silicone sealantthat is heat-resistant to at least160 °C.

Damage caused by unsuitablesealant.Unsuitable sealant can damagenatural stone. For natural stone worktops andnatural stone tiles, only use siliconesealant that is specially formulatedfor natural stone. Please follow themanufacturer's instructions.

Exhaust ducting

If the extractor is used at thesame time as a heating appliancethat relies on oxygen from the sameroom, there is a risk of toxic fumes. It is essential that the “Warning andSafety instructions” are observed. The extractor should be installedaccording to local and nationalbuilding regulations. Seek approvalfrom the building inspector wherenecessary.

The extractor has an exhaustconnection of 222 x 89 mm.

Only use smooth pipes or flexibleducting made from approved non-flammable materials for exhaustducting.

To achieve the most efficient airextraction with the lowest noiselevels, please note the following:

– The cross-section of the exhaustducting must not be smaller than thecross-section of the exhaustconnection (see “Appliancedimensions”).

– The exhaust ducting should be asshort and straight as possible.

– Only use wide radius bends.

– The exhaust ducting must not bekinked or compressed.

– Ensure that all connections arestrong and airtight.

Remember that any constriction ofthe airflow will reduce extractionperformance and increase operatingnoise.

If the exhaust air is to be ducted intoa flue, the ducting must be directed inthe flow direction of the flue.

If ducting is to be laid horizontally, itmust be laid with a downwardssloping gradient. This is to ensurethat condensate cannot drain backinto the extractor.

If the exhaust ducting is to runthrough rooms, ceiling space, etc.there may be great variations intemperature between the differentareas. The problem of condensationwill need to be addressed. Theexhaust ducting will need to besuitably insulated.

Ensure that the ducting can easily bedisconnected from the exhaustconnection in the event the cooktopneeds to taken out of the worktop forservice purposes.

Stick the supplied sealing strip on theexhaust connection if the ductingdoes not sit securely up against theexhaust connection.
