The Open Space Institute will honor the Smileyfamily, proprietors of Mohonk Mountain Housenear New Paltz, New York. Accepting this awardwill be Albert K. “Bert” Smiley, President andChief Executive Officer of Mohonk MountainHouse. He is a member of the fourth generationof the Smiley family, which has continuouslyowned and operated the scenic Mohonk Moun-tain House resort. The acclaimed resort wasfounded in 1869 by Bert’s great-grand uncle,

also named Albert K. Smiley, who with his twinbrother Alfred acquired over 17,500 acres ofscenic land on the Shawangunk Ridge. For thepast 142 years, the Smiley family has been notedfor their enlightened stewardship of these remarkable lands. Today all but 2,200 acres areincorporated into the now 7,000-acre MohonkPreserve, which was founded by the Smiley family in 1963, and the 22,000-acre MinnewaskaState Park Preserve, which was created in 1971.
