Why Use Open Source Software in the Primary / Elementary School?

I have only started investing FOSS in recent times. This is because that the software that comes with a Mac is just great and it discourages use of some open source software. Why use Audacity, if you have GarageBand? If you want to web author, just use iWeb! If you want to create a pdf then OSX does it as part of the printing phase!

Page 3: Open Source Software for Macs in the Primary / Elementary School

Why Use Open Source Software in the Primary / Elementary School?

However, in looking for an alternative for a Word Processing / Presentation / Drawing / Spreadsheet / Database suite, now that Appleworks is no longer bundled with Macs, Open Office is a great alternative.

Page 4: Open Source Software for Macs in the Primary / Elementary School

Why Use Open Source Software in the Primary / Elementary School?

It's free [and therefore of great interest to those who balance school budgets!]

Each application has a community / forums [which means a lot of problem solving has been done by many others. They are a great support team!]

Most applications while not having all the “bells and whistles” of a commercial application, work well!

Page 5: Open Source Software for Macs in the Primary / Elementary School

Why Use Open Source Software in the Primary / Elementary School?

Sometimes when teaching students, you don't want all the “bells and whistles” anyway!

There is not much that you can't do with a range of open source applications.

Sometimes open source applications are the best solution anyway!

Open Office Base

OpenOffice.org always had database front end tools, but in past versions they were very hidden. OpenOffice.org starts to handle databases like any other application, i.e. a new database can be created via the "File - New" menu. For novice users OpenOffice.org provides a new Table Wizard that allows creating database tables without any knowledge of databases or SQL.
