OPEN DAYS Cinema Programme Come and discover how EU funds help improve citizens’ daily lives! This year, the very first “OPEN DAYS Cinema” will take place as a side event of the “European Week of Regions and Cities”. On 7th and 8th October, from 17:15 to 18:30 pm, we will project a series of short video-clips from around Europe, showcasing excellent projects and good practices in all areas of Regional and Urban development. Come and visit the Open Days Cinema in the Committee of the Regions, Remorquer Building, Rue Belliard 93, to find out how Regions invest EU money in inspirational and innovative projects, ranging from a prison bakery to financial help for starting new companies. All OPEN DAYS participants can visit the Open Days Cinema with their conference badge: prior registration is not necessary. 1. The European Union’s Cohesion Policy: investing in your Regions and Cities Every year the EU invests millions of Euro in job creation and economic growth, to help reduce social and economic differences between its re- gions. This short video will tell you more on how these EU investments can improve citizens’ everyday lives by stimulating economic growth in their region. Over the past five years, EU cohesion policy has created over 600.000 jobs; invested in the professional training of up to 15 million people every year to improve their employability; and co financed the construction of 25 000 km of roads and 1800 km of railways; it has also ensured the provision of clean drinking water for 3 million more people; has invested in 200 000 small and medium-sized companies and 61.000 research projects. These figures are still growing, as projects which started over the past 5 years continue to produce results. All this is made possible by the European Regional Development Fund, the Cohesion Fund and the European Social Fund, which together represent more than one-third of the EU budget. 5. EIRIAS Parc

7. CycleCities – George gets CycleFit

This amusing animation promotes cycling in European cities through the INTERREG IVC project “CycleCities”. Cycling not only brings benefits for your health it also is good for environment and the economy, and contributes to the sustainable development of European cities.

8. FIN-EN, which financial instruments for companies?

“What are the challenges of financial engineering and how can public authorities face them?” Answering that question is the aim of FIN-EN project. This video presents the FIN-EN project and explains financial engineering and how it is useful for SMEs, through the 3 phases of a financial engineering program: pro-gramming; implementing; monitoring & evaluation.

9. European Cooperation in Andalusia

Andalusia is one of the most populous and widespread regions of Europe. It enjoys a favourable geostrategic location: situated between Europe and Africa, with a dual coastline and with borders with Portugal and Morocco. Andalusia is a substantive player when it comes to cooperative efforts with other regions and territories. This video aims to show the importance of the European Cooperation for Andalusia.

The Andalusian Observatory of Territorial Cooperation is a project led by the General Secretariat for External Action of the Andalusian Government’s Regional Ministry for the Presidency.

10. CCC on the road: GRONINGEN

Creative Industries as Catalyst for Innovation. This video (produced by the City of Bremen, WFG) shows the Interreg Project impact: good practices for Europe, as a result of transnational development. The video specifically shows the case of the City of Groningen - project partner in “CCC, Creative City Challenge”.

11. Saving the environment gives a sustainable society

Climate change and high environmental impacts mean that there must be a shift to a more sustainable society. This is a challenge, but it also cre-ates opportunities, as demand for cleantech and environmentally-friendly goods and services increases. The EU is increasingly focusing on this area of low carbon economy. During the years 2007 to 2013, funds from the European Regional Development Fund have been invested in projects to develop cleantech and reduce dependency on fossil energy in Sweden.

12. Bad Boys’ Bakery

Bad Boys’ Bakery is a social enterprise inside HM Prison Brixton that helps to rehabilitate and reintegrate prisoners back into society and employ-ment. The bakery is funded by the National Offenders Management Service and the European Social Fund (ESF) and run by Working Links. It was first set up by Gordon Ramsay and Optomen in 2012 to give participants key skills, work experience and responsibility. The project has already seen great results, with almost 1/3 of participants moving from the Bakery into some form of employment, and only 3% re-offending within the first year.

13. Cross-border education and road safety week

Every year, the Eurocity of Chaves-Verín, EGTC, cross-border conurbation in the Spanish-Portuguese border, organizes the Education and Road Safety Week. This event allows fire brigades, civil protection and road safety in-stitutions of Spain and Portugal to share experiences in an annual cross-border forum on road safety. Besides the forum, many activities are organ-ized in this common road safety prevention campaign focusing especially on the younger population.

15. Best Agers- Meeting Demographic Change (episode Sweden)

Best Agers is a project in the Baltic Sea Region with aim to abandon preju-dices towards the 55+generation and to increase their economic activity by putting their knowledge and experience to use. This episode portraits “Best Ager” Kerstin Sofia Andersson from Sörbyn, Sweden, still working at 70. After a successful career as an internationally working business advi-sor she returned to her home-village to help the economically deteriorated area through a major project.

16. Sustainable Urban Mobility in Ljutomer (Slovenia), Partner of URBACT Active Travel Network

Active Travel Network is an URBACT project implemented between 2009 and 2012 in 9 European cities. Its basic goal was to set up a network of international partners to encourage active travel in cities as appropriate means of transport for short trips to tackle environmental problems. The video presents one of the partners, Ljutomer in Slovenia, which was also nominated for a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan Award (SUMP) 2012.

14. eSchool – My Wielkopolska

The „eSchool – My Wielkopolska” project, has been implemented by the Wielkopolska Region in cooperation with Poznan Adam Mickiewicz’s Uni-versity and the Nationwide Computer Education Foundation. The main aim of “eSchool” is to implement “creative projects” and online platforms as teaching methods in schools. The project scope has included 105 schools from Wielkopolska, including 70 middle schools and 35 high schools, 9450 students and 1307 teachers.

18 Creativity and cooperation – a focus for Entrepreneurial West Hisingen summer entrepreneurs

During the summers of 2013 and 2014, a group of 16-19-year olds from the Gothenburg neighbourhood Västra Hisingen gathered to investigate their inner potential as entrepreneurs and to find new ways to boost their creativity, sense of cooperation, decision making skills and responsibility through venture creation and business development. This film shows the young summer entrepreneurs from 2013 and parts of their entrepreneur-ial journey

19. A flat screen that makes a rich language possible

Anna Söderberg is the project manager for the project Cela (Collaborative E-Learning Arena) which is working to develop people and organizations using digital tools and channels. She tells us the story of a girl who was finally able to communicate with the outside world through her tablet.

20. Welsh ERDF Projects

Finance Minister for Wales Jane Hutt discusses various ERDF projects in Wales including Swansea University Bay Campus development, the dualling of the A465 road in the South Wales Valleys, and the transforma-tion of 5 railway stations in Wales.

21. Technocampus Ocean – A platform dedicated to metal process-es and offshore structures

As the main region in France for marine renewable energies, the Region Pays de la Loire is building the innovation centre “Technocampus Ocean”, in partnership with local authorities. The 17,000m² research centre is fore-seen to open early in 2015 and will focus on shipbuilding and marine renewable energies. It will host about 300 professionals, industrialists and academics, and is intended to become the leading centre in France and one of the world leaders in issues related to marine engineering.

22. Regione Abruzzo: a green energy revolution

The video shows 3 shining example of Regione Abruzzo municipalities which realised interventions on renewables and energy savings (wind and photovoltaic plants). The video also describes the application of the Covenant of Mayors in Abruzzo which was joined by all 305 municipalities and realized interven-tions (photovoltaic plants, energy savings casing and heaters) in public buildings, mainly schools, using 300,000 EUR from the regional budget and the entire resource of 35 million EUR of structural funds EDRF 2007-2013, axis II Energy.

23. Biocant II- Association for Technology transfer Cantanhede

Biocant II - the first biotechnology park in Portugal, includes a laboratory centre that functions as an incubator for biotechnology firms. These com-panies, which operate in sectors that range from health, pharmaceuticals and veterinary science to industrial and environmental biotechnology, do not just hire or rent laboratory premises – they are also provided with an infrastructure that has been designed to respond to their R&D needs.
