Hopes & Dreams

FALL 2011

Page 2: ONU Alumni Journal Fall 2011

Chris and I are thrilled and delighted to join the Ohio Northern University community and are grateful for the many ways in which we have been made to feel welcome since our arrival in August. The opportunities to meet and interact with students, faculty, staff, alumni, trustees, advisory board members and parents have already made ONU feel like home to us. We are so glad to be here and to serve this great and vibrant University.

We also are privileged to follow Ken and Toby Baker and want to acknowledge the successful contributions both of them have made to Northern. Their 12 years of service represent a wonderful legacy to build on as we face today’s challenges and opportunities.

I look forward to using this space, as Ken did, to reflect on and communicate with you about all things that matter to ONU – past, present and future. This issue, with its theme of “Going Places,” not only provides several amazing alumni profiles, but also highlights a number of special events that reflect our hopes and dreams as we begin a leadership transition.

As I start my term as ONU’s 11th president, we are about to finish The Campaign for Ohio Northern University’s Tomorrow, a forward-looking $100 million fundraising effort to ensure that the next generation of students will have programs, faculty, facilities and support necessary for 21st century success. To date, 95 percent of that goal has been met. The campaign will end on May 31, 2012, by which time we hope to exceed our goal by as much as we can and to appeal to all of our stakeholders in the remaining months toward that end. In the meantime, you will be receiving further updates.

Chris and I look forward to meeting many more alumni and friends in the weeks and months ahead, especially next semester when we will be “on the road” to attend several alumni events in many different locations. We can’t wait to see you and to share our hopes and dreams to make ONU the best small, private University of our kind.

Happy holidays and warmest regards,

I hope this letter finds you healthy, happy and preparing to enjoy the holiday season. First and foremost, let me remind you to check out the back cover and mark your calendar for this year’s alumni events. We are excited for all of you to meet Ohio Northern’s 11th president, Dan DiBiasio, and his wife, Chris Burns-DiBiasio. They are equally excited to meet our wonderful alumni and friends. You can also watch for updates at www.onualumni.com

As a new mother, and as I imagine some of you can identify with me, things have changed significantly in our household. One of these changes includes the reading of numerous children’s books, and it is so interesting that many of them teach lifelong lessons. Most recently, a book reminded me of the theme of this specific journal, “Going Places.” Dr. Seuss’ Oh! The Places You’ll Go talks of going places, never giving up, continuing to move forward even when you do fail and, as a result, coming to the realization that anyone who sets his or her mind to it can “move mountains.” We have many examples of Ohio Northern “going places,” but one specific example is the $100 million comprehensive campaign that will soon be coming to a close. This is the largest campaign in Ohio Northern’s history, and it has been extremely humbling and encouraging watching so many alumni, friends, faculty and staff show support and pride in ONU by contributing to the campaign. Together, we’ll be “on our way up, seeing great sights, joining the high fliers who soar to high heights.” This campaign’s success will allow Northern to continue to go forward, and it will allow students to continue to follow their dreams by providing scholarships and programming in and out of the classroom. If you haven’t done so, there are still a few months left for you to join the thousands who have supported Ohio Northern. In this season of Thanksgiving, thanks to the many of you who have helped us succeed! And remember, there are many opportunities and ways to volunteer and support ONU! In closing, as the book says: “So... be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O’Shea, you’re off to great places, Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting... So... get on your way!”

Warmest regards,

Ann Donnelly Hamilton, BA ’99Director of Alumni Affairs

A quick startWhen Dan DiBiasio arrived in Ada in late summer 2011 as the newly appointed 11th president of Ohio Northern University, he hit the ground running. Dan and his wife,

Chris Burns-DiBiasio, met as many people as possible, toured ONU facilities and become

acquainted with the Ada community.

Dan also continued his transition to the ONU presidency, a changeover that began before he officially started the job.

“Prior to my official start date on Aug. 1, Chris and I visited campus five times, meeting with groups of faculty, staff and students, and getting a head start on the major issues and top priorities.”

The desire to be involved in Ada has led to Chris’ appointment as ONU’s director of community relations, a role she brought with her from Wilmington College.

“I was really pleased when Ohio Northern’s Board of Trustees gave me this position, because it continues what I’ve been doing for about a decade in Wilmington,” she says. “What it allows me to do is see how I might be able to connect the resources around the campus with some of the needs in the community. I’ll serve as a liaison, essentially.”

As Chris and Dan settle into their University roles, they will continue to get acquainted with everything ONU.

“In the short term, I want to learn as much as possible about the academic and the administrative side of the institution, to meet as many people as I possibly can, and understand the programs, the culture and the traditions of Ohio Northern,” Dan says.

“Each dean has given us an ‘up close and personal’ tour of the facilities associated with their colleges, and doing so has given us a better sense of where students and faculty meet and where learning occurs – as well as what some of our facilities’ needs are,” Dan says. “I was impressed with the diversity of the Arts & Sciences, the teacher-scholar model in action in Pharmacy, the examples of hands-on learning and problem-solving in Engineering, the recent renovations in Law, and the fusion of practical space with elegant art in Business Administration.”

The Hopes and Dreams of Dan and Chris

Moving northwardDan’s transition comes after 16 years as president of Wilmington College, an institution with some similarities to ONU. Both schools are private and church-related, offer professional programs grounded in the liberal arts, and are members of the Ohio Athletic Conference. The city of Wilmington, like Ada, is a college town, where town-gown partnerships enhance the quality of life for students and residents alike.

So, arriving on campus in late summer, Chris and Dan knew what to expect from ONU – mostly.

“I was interested in ONU for many reasons, with one of the biggest attractions being ONU’s reputation for quality – quality programs, faculty, staff, students and facilities.” Dan says. “I knew I would find ONU students to be bright and talented, but I was amazed at how involved and engaged they are – both inside and outside the classroom.”

Another attraction to ONU was the University’s desire to aspire to achieve greater regional and national prominence. “That was very attractive to me,” Dan says. “I was excited about the prospect to affiliate with in an institution that wanted to reach the next level.”

“I felt very comfortable here,” Chris says. “For me, there are so many advantages of being in a small college town, and I look forward to being involved in the community.”

Go Bears!

Dan noted that the common thread running through all the tours was seeing students and faculty working together, an enduring value and legacy of an ONU education. “I continue to be impressed with the people that comprise this great University.”

Chris agrees. “For me, a short-term goal is to really become familiar with people. I really like the people aspect. I like to be able to call students by name and to know what kinds of activities they’re involved in. It’s the same with faculty and staff.”

A message for alumniThe other essential group that Dan and Chris would like to get to know is ONU’s alumni, an audience they see as key stakeholders of the University.

“It’s about helping alumni to stay connected or to re-connect to the institution, and to realize that they make a difference in the lives of our current students,” Chris says.

“We want alumni to know about ONU today and to

engage with us at many levels,” Dan says. As such, Chris and Dan are very eager to get out on the road to meet alumni and discuss opportunities for greater alumni engagement.

A big event on the horizonWhile Dan and Chris hope to reach these “meet-and-greet” goals during their first 12 months, they both have set their sights on a huge anniversary in ONU’s future.

“One of my biggest goals is to work with others on campus and the Board of Trustees to develop our next strategic plan, one that would give us direction for the next 10 years and bring us to the year 2021,” Dan says. “In 2021, Ohio Northern

will celebrate its sesquicentennial, its 150-year anniversary, and that’s an important milestone in the history of an institution.”

Dan explains that he wants to begin the planning process next semester and develop a plan for the board to review next October. “We need a plan to guide us to an even more successful future,” he says.

A new traditionWith a new president comes a new tradition, and Dan has established a different presidential tradition at ONU home football games.

Rather than doing push-ups with the cheerleaders after the Polar Bears score points – as former President Kendall L. Baker did during his tenure, Dan will lift his voice in song. Following the game, he joins the team and the marching band in singing a spirited version of the ONU fight song.

“Ken’s tradition started with him, and I am glad to honor that tradition by having it end with Ken,” Dan says with a smile. “I enjoy exercising my vocal chords after every home game. Go Polar Bears!”

Daybreak at the peakKyle Manko, PharmD ’10, was climbing into his car after work one day when he received an

unusual text message from his college

buddy, Andrew Taylor, PharmD ’09. “Do you want to climb Mount Rainier?” the text inquired. It took Manko about two seconds to fire back: “Sure!”

“It wasn’t until I got home that I learned Mount Rainier was more than 14,000 feet,” recalls Manko. “But still, I was in.”

Manko, a clinical pharmacist at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital

left the base camp at 1 a.m. to make the bid for the summit. Braving darkness, below-freezing temperatures and fierce winds exceeding 50 mph, the tiny group picked their way up sheer cliffs and icy terrain to reach the peak by dawn. “Without Kyle there, I don’t know if I would have wanted to continue. I started to think it was never going to end,” says Taylor.

And then, just as the sun began to peek over the horizon and shimmer off the clouds, the group reached their destination. “The view was beautiful,” says Manko, who saw Mount Hood and Mount St. Helens off in the distance. “I felt the accomplishment of knowing I had achieved something many people are not able to do.”

Taylor says it was an awe-inspiring moment. “It was a beautiful feeling to see the sun rise on the top of the mountain and realize that we were the only five people in the world to see this part of God’s creation on this day.”

Taylor and Manki didn’t rest on their laurels for long, however. “A few moments after we got down

Life is an adventure for five intrepid ONU alumni.

from the mountain, we started to think about what’s next,” laughs Taylor. “Something a little higher or a little bigger?”

Law and justice in RwandaBrian Anderson, JD ’10, LLM ’11, planned to follow a predictable path after law school. But his ONU education steered him down a radically different course. Instead of returning to his hometown of Milwaukee, Wis., to practice law as a litigator, Anderson found himself in Kigali, Rwanda, working to strengthen the African nation’s fledgling justice system.

For nine months, Anderson served as a law clerk to Rwanda’s

Medical Center, and Taylor, a pharmacist at Galion Community Hospital, share a strong faith and sense of adventure that has led them on medical mission trips to remote places all over the world. They spent six months preparing physically and mentally for

the Mount Rainier climb. “Our guides told us to show up in the best shape of our lives, and we took this advice seriously,” says Taylor.

On June 7, 2011, Manko and Taylor arrived at the base of Mount Rainier, 54 miles southeast of Seattle, to begin a three-day climb to the peak. Their group, comprised of four guides and eight adventure seekers, ascended to approximately 10,000 feet the first day. On the second day, they took a slower pace to review ice-climbing skills and adjust to the physiological effects of the higher altitude.

On the third day, a smaller group (four decided to stay behind)

Ride of a lifetimeWhen he was a boy, Chad Miller, BSME ’95, constructed elaborate Hot Wheels tracks that curved up and around the walls and furniture in his childhood home. Today, he designs some of the world’s most thrilling wooden roller coaster rides.

Growing up in Elida, Ohio, Miller loved to visit Cedar Point and King’s Island several times each summer with his family. After each trip, he returned home and feverishly sketched coaster designs and constructed them out of LEGO. When he learned that engineers designed coasters, he knew what he wanted to be when he grew up.”

Luck proved to be on his side when he landed a position at Custom Coasters, a company based in Cincinnati. When the company folded in 2002, he and three coworkers started their own firm, The Gravity Group, which has realized steady growth ever since.

Miller, who once believed steel coasters were “bigger and badder,” became a convert to the wooden coaster. “It didn’t take me long to realize that wooden coasters are pretty cool,” he says. “They are more organic and unpredictable, because they are constructed from a natural substance that gives and takes. Steel coasters can sometimes be so smooth and precisely engineered that it takes away the thrill. On a wooden coaster, every ride is different.”

To date, The Gravity Group has designed 10 original wooden coasters and provided consulting expertise for dozens of existing coasters at parks around the world. Their U.S. coasters include Hades at the Mt. Olympus Water and Theme Park in Wisconsin Dells, Wis., the Ravine Flyer II at Waldameer Park in Erie, Pa., and The Voyage at Holiday World in Santa Claus, Ind. The Gravity Group also has the distinction of designing the first wooden roller coaster constructed in mainland China. Since it opened in 2009, the Fireball has been the most popular attraction at the Happy Valley Park in Shanghai, China.

When designing a new coaster, Miller aims to make it safe, comfortable, durable and most of all, fun. He can look at thousands of calculations on his computer screen and get a fairly accurate idea of how each moment of the ride will feel in real life. But taking the coaster on its initial ride is the true test. “I tend to be fairly critical at first,” he says. “After about 20 rides, though, I start to relax and just enjoy it.”

Although Miller designs coasters for a living, he’s a small boy at heart who has never lost his thrill for the ride. “At 9 years old, I wanted to be either a roller coaster designer or a rock star. For the sake of the music industry, I’m glad it turned out this way.”

Chief Justice Aloysie Cyanzayire, the country’s first female chief justice and an inspirational figure. Jean-Marie Kamatali, ONU law professor and former assistant director of the LLM program, kindled Anderson’s desire to work in international law and arranged the clerkship.

When Anderson stepped off the plane at the Kigali International Airport, his stomach churned with anxiety and anticipation. Would he be accepted? Could he make a positive contribution? Would he be able to adjust to the cultural differences?

His fears soon melted away in the warm and welcoming environment he experienced. Anderson says his Rwandan colleagues treated him like an insider, even though he clearly stood out as the only foreigner working at the Supreme Court.

Anderson became immersed in high-level projects to reform Rwanda’s judicial system, currently transitioning from a civil law to a common law system. He researched the court procedures and policies practiced in different common law countries and developed recommendations to improve the efficiency of Rwanda’s court registry and appellate process. Some of Anderson’s recommendations regarding appellate procedure became law through a vote by the Rwandan Parliament – a testament to his meticulous research and hard work.

Anderson says his adventures in the scenic and temperate “Land of a Thousand Hills” changed his life. He spent a memorable day with impoverished Rwandan orphans, rolled down a hill with a 400-pound mountain gorilla in the Virunga National Forest, attended heartrending memorial services for victims of the country’s 1994 genocide, and established close friendships with many Rwandans and other expatriates.

Living in a developing country made Anderson appreciate things he used to take for granted, like reliable hot water and electricity and the U.S.’s first-rate judicial system. The Rwandan culture also made him question the American culture’s emphasis on materialism. “I began to think about what is important in life, and what is not,” he says.

Anderson now teaches courses on Africa and the Middle East at Ohio Northern. But his Rwandan adventure cemented his interest in international law and travel, he says. In fact, he plans to return to Rwanda in spring 2012 with colleagues from the American Bar Association for a legal exchange trip with East Africa. “Rwanda is truly a beautiful country, and it will be wonderful to return.”

Frigid air and swirling snow greeted Rose Previte, BA ’03, and her husband, David Greene, an NPR journalist, when they arrived in Moscow on Nov. 1, 2009. The couple planned to call Russia home for the next two years while Greene was on assignment. To Previte, the gloomy weather seemed inauspicious. “I started crying,” she recalls. “Because I realized it really was going to be as cold as I feared.”

In spite of her aversion to harsh winters, Previte learned to cope with the extremes of Russian weather. In fact, she managed to survive two of the country’s hottest summers and

coldest winters in the last century.

Her strategy was to wear fur hats and seek out opportunities to escape. With Moscow as her

base, she started globetrotting. She became “an Ohio girl gone global,” blogging about her many worldwide adventures on her blog spot “Rambling Rosa” (ramblingrosarp.blogspot.com).

In the past 24 months, Previte has traveled to more than 20 countries on five continents, including Israel, Egypt, Croatia, Morocco, France, Finland, China and Portugal. Her most curious adventures (all in Eastern Europe) include experiencing the worst toilet paper in the world, being physically carried off a crowded train for inadvertently blocking the door, and encountering loud and pushy shoppers in grocery stores who yanked cheese right out of her hand.

Living in Russia and traveling abroad has expanded her horizons, Previte says. “The minute you travel, you fundamentally change as a person in one way or the other. I’ve really had to step back and be understanding of how and why people think and act differently from what I am used to.”

In Moscow, Previte learned to adjust to the lack of openness. The tight restrictions of the country’s former communist regime still cast a deep shadow, and Russians are generally not affable to foreigners. “Moscow is not the most welcoming city in the world,” Previte explains.

As a result, she has grown to appreciate the hope and optimism inherent in American culture. “The Russians have had such a long, difficult history that it has shaped the way they look at the future. There is a big sense of fatalism,” she says.

Previte and her husband return to the U.S. in January, relocating to the Washington, D.C., area where Greene will help host NPR Morning Edition. Previte, who received her master’s degree in public policy from George Mason University, plans to work in local or federal politics. But her global adventures will continue, she says. “Once the bug has bitten you, there is really no turning back.”

Pushing limitsSean Forde, BSBA ’93, rolled his three interests – business, sports and adventure – into one fabulous career. An executive for Nike Inc., Forde moved to Amsterdam last year to be the sportswear category sales manager for Nike’s Central and Eastern European Divisions. He travels

across Europe, Russia, the Middle East and Africa, growing Nike’s presence and meeting consumers and celebrity athletes.

Forde rose through the ranks at Nike by being a team player, delivering results and stepping outside his comfort zone. In his 14 years at Nike, he’s had 11 different job titles. “Some roles required me to start from scratch, with no status, credibility or expertise, and I felt totally uncomfortable going in,” he says. “But that is how you grow and get better: by pushing your limits. I’m a big advocate of that.”

As the world’s largest sports and fitness company, Nike keeps its competitive edge by innovating and always doing the right thing, explains Forde. “We have an intricate system for how, where, what, when and how each product we sell to anyone,” he says. “It’s not about selling more, which is easy; it’s about being the industry leader.”

Forde spends more than half his time on the road, visiting Nike consumers in Moscow, Istanbul, Ankara, Athens, Warsaw, Krakow, Zagreb, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Budapest, Prague, Dubai/Abu Dhabi, Berlin, and Frankfurt. “I have two passports, and they are getting very full of stamps and visas,” he says.

During his travels, he’s had some amazing experiences. He ran a 5k through the streets of Athens, Greece, with a final lap around the original Olympic stadium; he explored the underground cave system of an ancient Orthodox Christian monastery in Kiev, Ukraine; and he toured ancient landmarks in Jerusalem, witnessing firsthand the tension between the Palestinians and Israelis.

Forde points out that living abroad is much different than traveling abroad. While he embraces many aspects of Dutch culture, like the peaceful canals in Amsterdam and the widespread use of bicycles for transportation, he’s struggled with other cultural differences, like poor customer service and the Dutch sense of humor. “Living here is both fun and frustrating,” he says. “My job is a cultural smorgasbord. I’m still adjusting to and learning about the different cultures I encounter every day.”

A year into his global experience, however, Forde couldn’t imagine a life not filled with new challenges and adventures. “Happiness is your personal responsibility,” he says. “Figure out what makes you happy, and do that to the best of your ability. If you haven’t found it yet, then keep looking, don’t wait!”

The T.J. Smull College of Engineering celebrated 130 years of engineering excellence on Sept. 9-10, 2011. The weekend activities included a special ceremony in the English Chapel marking the 40th anniversary of the Order of the Engineer. ONU’s first ring ceremony

took place in 1971 and has been repeated every year since. During the solemn ceremony, engineers publicly state their obligation to self, the profession and humankind and receive a ring to wear on the little finger of the working hand. During the Sept. 10 event, engineering alumni had the opportunity to

renew their Obligation of the Engineer or be inducted into the Order for the first time.

The T.J. Smull College of Engineering has the distinction of being the first professional school established at ONU. ONU awarded its first civil engineering degree in 1892. Since that time, the school has graduated more than 6,290 engineers who have helped transform America’s landscape by linking the scientific discoveries of their times to everyday life. They have built bridges, buildings, engines, steel mills, railroads, assembly lines, communication systems, electrical grids and much more. In the process, they have earned a stellar reputation for strength of purpose, knowledge and vision.

Use your smart phone to view the 2011 Hall of Fame introduction video:

Six members of the Ohio Northern University athletics family were inducted into the University’s Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, Sept. 30, as part of ONU’s Homecoming weekend.

Sandra (Hoying) Paeltz, BS ’00, BSMT ’01, is an 11-time

All-OAC (Ohio Athletic Conference) athlete, a two-time All-American in the long jump at both indoor and outdoor conference championships, a two-time OAC Champion and a Clyde Lamb Award recipient.Additionally, she is the current ONU record-holder in indoor and outdoor long jump, and a current OAC record-holder in the outdoor long jump. Besides varsity sports, Paeltz was a member of the Professional Association of Women in Science, Beta Beta Beta and the American Pharmacist Association and participated on the intramural volleyball and flag football teams. After graduating from ONU, Paeltz went on to acquire her doctorate of pharmacy from the University of Cincinnati.

She currently works as a pharmacist at Discount Drug Mart and lives in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Since college, she has completed one marathon and volunteers as a long jump coach at Fort Loramie High School.

As a pole-vaulter, Benjamin Shaffer, BSPh ’99, was a

seven-time NCAA National Championship qualifier, gaining All-American status

six times (four in outdoor track and field and twice in indoor). He also is a two-time Ohio Athletic Conference champion and eight-time letter-winner.

After graduating from ONU, Shaffer served as a pharmacist for Dayton Heart Hospital and director of pharmacy at Grady Memorial Hospital. He currently serves as the director of growth and business development at Grady Memorial Hospital and Dublin Methodist Hospitals.

Shaffer received an MBA in health care administration from Columbia Southern University in 2007 and is a member of the Ohio Board of Pharmacy Rules and Regulations Committee. He also offers his time to coaching, People in Need of Delaware County, Project SEARCH (a job program for disabled individuals), and the Rotary Club of Delaware. He resides in Plain City, Ohio.

James Shaw III, BSCE ’87, amassed nine letters as a Polar

Bear in three different sports: football and indoor and outdoor track and field. On the gridiron, Shaw worked his way to captain and earned All-Conference nods in 1985 and 1986. He became ONU’s first indoor track and field NCAA qualifier, earned the individual title in indoor shot put in 1987 and still ranks

in the top 10 of Northern’s shot-putters.

Shaw now works for Lucas County as a sanitation engineer and has been recognized several times as Young Engineer of the Year for his work. He also is continually active in his community, lending his time to organizations such as the YMCA, Habitat for Humanity and the Catholic Youth Organization.

Additionally, Shaw has been a collegiate on-field football official since 1988, working games at all three NCAA levels. He has refereed several postseason games (including the FCS Championship in 2006), and, in 2009, he began officiating for the Big Ten Conference. Shaw lives in Holland, Ohio.

Karla (Thobe) Siereveld, BS ’96, was the first and, so far,

only women’s basketball player in ONU history to be named WBCA Kodak All-American. In addition, she was named All-OAC twice as well as Academic All-OAC.

Siereveld holds several ONU records, including all-time rebounds, single-season rebounds, single-game rebounds and career field goals made.
