How long has Doran Kennedy been around?My husband Chris and I opened Doran Kennedy Estate Agents six years ago as a man and wife team. I originally came from a strong legal background having studied law and gained over 10 years experience having worked in some of the largest law firms in Liverpool. What are your forecasts for 2010’s property market?The signs are definitely encouraging. We are not back to boom times yet, but it certainly is better than it was a year ago. We have seen a rise and stability in the market and seeing more competition from lenders, as house prices stabilise, mortgage lenders are starting to show more keenness to lend and compete for new customers as a number of banks and building societies have been cutting their rates, it's becoming much easier to obtain a competitive rate with a smaller deposit. Lenders have cut their rates over the last few weeks. The signs are definitely encouraging.What is your top tip for homeowners with

property on the market?My advice would be to obtain updated valuations from as many agents as possible and be realistic with your asking price. On average, we are witnessing a definite trend of homeowners being more realistic when setting their asking price which is improving their likelihood of a sale within a shorter space of time. Lower prices are guaranteed to generate increased interest bringing competition back to the market. City apartment or country pile?Country pile, I’m definitely an advocate of period property I love original features. My husband and I purchased a rundown 1920’s Edwardian property nine years ago and have totally refurbished throughout, recreating its character. Red or Blue?I’m not really into football, more a shopping type of girl!Top tip for homebuyers?To register with as many agents and view as many properties as possible, it’s the biggest financial transaction of your life so be sure you seek as much expert advice as you can. Shop around to see who is doing the best legal and

financial deals. Top tip for first time buyers?It’s definitely a good time for first time buyers to step on to the property ladder especially in Kirkby, with property prices over the last couple of years dropping, this has eased affordability for many. The mortgage rate cuts just keep on coming at the moment so get out there and view as many properties as you can, make sure you seek good legal and financial advice.

Go Penguins!Children from Primary Schools all over Liverpool have taken part in the Go Penguins project. Gateacre Comprehensive was the venue for almost 150 children, as they designed and decorated nine penguins, one for each school involved in the project. BBC Merseyside was there for live interviews as well as a helping hand from the Lord Mayor of Liverpool. The finished penguins were put on show in the John Lewis flagship store in Liverpool ONE. The Go Penguins project has been extremely successful, having been featured in The Guardian as one of the top things to do in the UK this Christmas and even getting a mention on BBC’s The One Show.

No one wants to injure or lose a loved one

to something that is preventable, so it is vital that we make sure as many people as possible are as aware of this deadly issue.”Carbon Monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless gas, the main sources of which are wrongly installed or poorly main-tained and ventilated heating and cooking appliances such as gas fires, boilers, coal and solid fuel fires, portable gas appliances and room heaters.So stay safe, and ensure you have a carbon monoxide detector on your shopping list – for only a few pounds you could save a life.

Nine out of ten viewers in the city are aware of digital switch over, and 91% have already converted

their main TV set. However some people are unsure whether they need to change their aerial. Most households won’t require a new TV aerial. As a rule of thumb, if viewers get a good analogue signal now, they should be able to get a good signal after the switchover.However Digital UK – the independent, not-for-profit organisation leading switch over – is warning people to be on their guard against contractors who may target homes across Liverpool and exploit them by charging exorbitant fees for installing equipment or carrying out unnecessary work. Digital UK wants to encourage residents who may need a new aerial to use contractors who are ‘Registered Digital Installers’ (RDIs) and who display the ‘digital tick’ logo. If householders cannot find a local RDI installer, they are advised to look for an installer registered with the Confederation of Aerial Industries’ CAI Plus scheme or the Independent Digital Standards Commission (IDSC). More information can be found at digitaluk.co.uk. Only five to ten per cent of households will need a new aerial to receive TV after switchover. People can check the strength of their existing aerial by visiting teletext page 284. The typical cost to repair or replace a standard aerial varies from £80 to £150.People living in a flat are likely

to have a shared aerial. It is important that they speak

to whoever is

responsible for managing the building to make sure it is ready for individual flats to receive a digital TV signal.

Digital UK is offering these ten top tips to viewers:

1) There’s no such thing as a digital aerial. Most existing aerials are fine for receiving digital TV, though five-to-ten per cent may need replacing for switchover if they’re in poor condition.

2) Nobody from Digital UK or the Switchover Help Scheme will come to your house unless you’ve arranged an appointment yourself. If you have arranged for work to be done, always make sure you ask for identification.

3) Don’t agree to have work done by an aerial installer who calls without an appointment and fails to show identification.

4) Use the test card at teletext p284 for guidance on whether you need a new aerial for switchover.

5) If you do need aerial work, look for a Registered Digital Installer carrying the ‘digital tick’ logo.

6) If you can’t find one, look for a member of the recognised trade bodies (CAI or IDSC).

7) Failing that, ask family and friends to recommend installers with a good track record, and get written quotations for the work from at least two.

8) Before work starts, agree the price, payment arrangements and start/finish dates.

9) Don’t pay for work upfront.

10) If you suspect you have been ripped off, or that there is a rogue trader in your area, call Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06.

Rather than using inspiration from the past designers began to look at the things around them to inspire some of the most wonderful furniture, lighting and patterns which make this particular style unique.In the beginning people either loved it and embraced the designs with open arms or loathed it and said it would never become popular-the latter being very wrong! The art nouveau style saw a revival in the 1960s and again today in the 21st century interior designers are still using some of the concepts within their interior styles.Famous names associated with art nouveau are Charles Renie Macintosh who introduced wonderful patterns for wall papers and fabrics. It is for these designs he is probably most associated.Louis Comfort Tiffany designed and created wonderful lighting using a host of different coloured glass in table lamp shades on which the stands depicted nature and animals predominately.Emille Galle designed fabulous furniture, ceramics and glass wear to compliment this new design fashion in the art nouveau style with influences from Rocco. Rene Lalique glass wear and jewellery items are highly sought after in the auction rooms, with people hoping to find these exquisite pieces to add to their collections.These ‘new’ designers believed in fine craftsmanship and quality but they also embraced and accepted mass production.To achieve the art nouveau look in your home there are some key and fundamental ‘rules’ to be followed.Floors should be parquet and stained or

varnished. While Macintosh experiments with interiors which were ‘all white’ typically the colour tones were muted and comprised of sage greens, browns and mustard, combined with lilac, purple and peacock blue. Walls were either painted in one of the muted tones, ‘off white’ or papered with patterns inspired by nature and often included birds, particularly peacocks and dragonflies.Macintosh is world famed for his high backed chairs with black gloss lacquer. However chairs upholstered in replicas of floral fabrics with muted tones would look in keeping with the art nouveau theme.If you could afford a genuine Tiffany lamp it would undoubtedly be the show case of

the room, however this is highly unlikely for most! Reproduction Tiffany lamps are widely available in the high street or online and are essential to achieve the art nouveau look.Ornaments were glass, the opal and pearlescent styles for which Lalique is famed, along with pewter and silver. Antiques shops and boot fairs are ideal places to find art nouveau ornaments which do not necessarily command a high price due to the mass production at the time. To complete the art nouveau look the room should have plenty of flowers and peacock feathers which are one of the hallmarks of this interior design style.Windows contained stained glass panels, these can been found at salvage yards if you are lucky or modern reproduction would work equally as well.
