Meet European industrial discharge specifications;US and UK defense standards

'Green' compressor wash fluidsare environmentally friendly

ZOK International Group. long-timesupplier of industrial and marine.

aero and aeroderivative gas turbinecompressor and cleaning fluids, isintroducing a new product that theysay is aimed at especially difficultcleaning requirements.

New 'ZOK mx' cleaner is based onan environmentally-friendly formulation and is being marketed in parallelwith the group's long-standing ZOK27 compressor wash and inhibitor. Both fluids are formulated to meetEuropean industrial and UK and USdefense department standards.

Traditionally, compressor cleaningfluids use alkyl phenol ethoxylateslAPEs) in their fortnulations--<:hemi-

cal compounds suspected as causingproblems in fish. Both of the ZOKfluids use alcohol ethoxylates in theirplace. "These degrade faster thanAPEs and obviate their toxicityphase." says ZOK's Keith Cartwright.

"Removing APEs from their formulation enables our products to satisfythe requirements of the EU's Oslo andParis (OSPAR) Convention for prevention of pollution in nonhernEuropean warers." he notes. "This hasbeen achieved three years ahead ofOSPAR taking legal effect."

New ZOK mx is being marketed asa biodegradable. non-hazardous. waterbased cleaning fluid capable ofremoving very stubborn dirt deposits.

"With the recently rewritten MIL-C85704 specification giving emphasisto cleaning as opposed to corrosioninhibition, the new product is wellsuited to US military engine cleaningrequirements."

On the other hand, ZOK 27 is certificated as a corrosion inhibitingcleaner. Used on smaller turboshaftengines where the small size compressor blades need corrosion controland at th~ other end of the scale wheremanufacturers of large frame industrial gas turbines specify tight control ofpotassium and sodium trace metals.

Both products are formulated foron-· or off-line cleaning. Washingscheduling can be optimized with thecompany's IPowerWash' software runon your PC control system. The tluidsare available from ZOK [nternational's Airworthy Ltd. in West Sussex.England and ZOK Inc. in Texas. orthrough a worldwide ne[work ofstocking distributors.

DescriptionA concentrated neutral water-based detergentcleaning fluid for cleaning and corrosion inhibitionof gas turbine engine compressors.

ZOK 27" is more effective than standardaqueous cleaners, so it cleans faster. Its non-ioniccJeansing action removes organic contaminantssuch as oil, grease, and hydrocarbons, as well asinorganic fouling such as salts and soil. Anefficient clean is achieved during the very shortcontact times of a hot wash.

DilutionDilute 1+4 with water before use. (20% soiution).Demineralized water «11 ~S/cm conductivity)should be used for hollon-line cleaning.Drinking water «700~S/cm conductivity) may beused for coid/off-line cleaning.A ready-to-use (RTU) version of this product isavailable for users who do not have supplies ofdemineralized water.

•PRO 0 U C T

On-line and off-line compressor cleaning fluid for gasaircraft, industrial, offshore and power generation applications

Washing of gas turbine compressors is known toprovide the most effective method for preventingcompressor fouling. It ensures maximum availablepower output, improved fuel efficiency andreduced wear and :ear on machine componentssuch as bearings and blades. On-line washing (hotwashing) can signifcantly extend the periodbetween necessary shu'ldowns for off-line washing, thus reducing costly downtime and production

losses

ZOK 27'" is interraliorally approved and in useworld-wide on all OJ oes of engines from 500SHPhelicopter engines :~ 2COMW power generators.

ZOK 27'" contains dramatically reduced leveisof alkali metals anc complies fully with allspecifications, incJLding:

ZOK 27'" is a concentrated water-based, nonfiammable, environmentally friendly, biodegradable

fiuid.

~Yf.g.\I.?=bosgg cle"ners (e.e. ZOK 27)

This is the most recent development In compressor cleaners orld Is

steadily replocing older methods. Aqueous-bosed cleoners are solutions

or deleq~enl 1n we~erl often \.lith some solvent present and Bomet1mes

\.lith corroiifon inhibitors. Usually diluted 1:4 IJHh \.later before use,

lhey are mostly of British origin and the betler ones have lillie

solvent present and are non-flammoble. (Some of lhe others .conta!n high

proportions of solvenl and suffer from the some draIJbacks as solvent

based cleaners). They offer sefe transportation ond handline; and lhe

possibility of corrosion inhibition as a bonuG. ,

They lend lo freeze at around O~, so for operation ot luI' temperatures

an antifreeze such.as methonol must be added.

WHAT SORT OF WATER DO YOU DILUTE WiTH?

Hot IJash: distilled or deionised/dem!nerolised \.later should be used.

Cold IJash: distilled or deionised/demineralised IJater is best, but if H

DescriptionA concentrated water-based detergent cleaningfluid for heavy-duty cleaning of gas turbine enginecompressors.

••

PRO Due T

Powerful on-line and off-line compressor cleaning fluid for gasaircraft, industrial, offshore and power generation applications

Washing of gas turbine compressors is known toprovide the most effective method for preventingcompressor fouling. It ensures maximum availablepower output, improved fuel efficiency andreduced wear and tear 0[1 machine componentssuch as bearings and blades. The period betweennecessary shut~downs for off-line washing can besignificantly extended by on-line washing (hotwashing) thus reducing costly downtime andproduction losses.

ZOK mx"' Is a concentrated water-based, nonflammable, environmentally friendly, biodegradable

fluid.

ZOK mx"' is formulated to meet many OEMspecifications, including:

Alstom Gas TurbinesGeneral Electric MID-TD-0000-5Rolls-Royce MSRR 9914Solar ES9-62-1 On-Crank and On-Line.US MIL-PRF-85704C Type II Off-Line andType III On-Line

CompositionA special blend of non-ionic surfactants, organicsolvents and demineralized water.

AppearanceClear colorless liquid with a mild pleasant odor.

SolubilityCompletely soluble in water. No agitation required.

All ZOK mx'" fonmulation, manufacturing andpackaging is subject to the Quality Assurancerequirements of ISO 9000.

ZOK mX® is harmless to turbines and will notcause blade or coating erosion, thermal shock orbearing damage.

ZOK mx"' has a very low ash level. It is essentialduring a hot wash that the cleaner should leave aslittle ash residue as possible to avoid blockingturbine cooling holes.

CompatibilityNot corrosive or detrimental to any of the materialsnormally used in gas turbine engines or aircraftcomponents. No adverse effect on syntheticturbine oils.

SafetyWash off small splashes. Wear rubber gloves ifsustained contact is likely. Wear goggles ifspraying. This preparation is not classified astoxic, hazardous or irritant.See Material Safety Data Sheet.

ZOK mX® is stronger and mare effective thanstandard aqueous cleaners, so it cleans faster. Itsnon-ionic cleansing action removes organiccontaminants such as oil, grease, andhydrocarbons, as well as inorganic fouling such assalts and soil. A super-efficient clean is achieved, even during the very short contact times betweenthe fluid and the compressor blades when hotwashing.
