PersonaThe identity I have constructed via my blog is true to the ‘real me’ yet I have chosen the nickname ‘The Bearded Woman’ as a play on my surname and to maintain some anonymity and a humourous mystique.

As an aspiring journalist, I have a strong interest in world news. The English language is undeniably a common ground to break the barriers of language with this modern world globalizing to gain insight into a foreign countries news without knowing their language. So many countries have at least one English publication. Globalization breaks the barriers to understand the story of another person in a different corner of the world. I believe globalization is a wonderful step forward for this modern era, but I believe tradition and culture will be lost if the Western World does not take part outside their comfort zones, hence my goal to become bilingual.

I hope to eventually become a confident foreign correspondent in the Netherlands and am studying Dutch to fulfill my aspirations and aid my competition in the journalism field. I am studying Dutch via online teaching community website Live Mocha and establishing connections with native Dutch speakers.

Via this blog I aim to write about my experiences learning Dutch and write news stories and feature articles on Dutch culture to be used as a portfolio.

The key way to learn and to progress is via connections. I have connected my Twitter feed and LinkedIn profile to the Wordpress to reveal my true identity to engaged readers, and do hope that my readers enjoy my little joke.

Value Proposition There has been a degree of doubt as to whether Australian journalism students will actually obtain jobs in mainstream media. The Bearded Woman is one of those many students who have graduated successfully, but alas, no cadetships of sustainable assistant editorial roles have come her way.

As an optimist about the future of journalism The Bearded Woman is eager to establish contacts within the industry and in the Netherlands.

She knows there will be struggles, out of the ordinary, or relatable to some who have aspired to work abroad. She hopes to take readers on a learning journey and inform them of Dutch current affairs.

Positioning Statement

The Bearded Woman is an aspiring journalist with ambitions to work as a foreign correspondent in the

Netherlands. She aims to master the language to work professionally.

Brand story 

The Bearded Woman, like so many others, is failing to find journalism work in Australia, and is scouting for another avenue, or corner of the world to pursue

her ambitions. 

As a native English-speaking journalist, she aims to document her transition from a beginner to

elementary speaking, utilizing her encounters with Dutch people and writing about Dutch culture.

 

Brand Strategy 

This blog aims to showcase various styles of writing, yet it is a diary documenting my attempts to engage in

Dutch culture, specifically the language.  

The Bearded Woman will be engaging with online language learning community Live Mocha to develop

proficiency in Dutch and interact with natives.  

She aims to complete one new post a week for readers.
