MARGARET, THE IRON QUEEN2000Association GasparIron sculpture

13

280, route de Villavit

Firmly positioned, strong and unwavering, Margaret, the queen of our pastures has the place of honour at the entry to the village, standing in front of two traditional Le Grand-Bornand chalets. This sculpture was made by former shipyard workers as part of a return to work scheme by the GASPAR association.

Promenade du Borne

Full of curves and colours, the Cartoon Cow enjoys a break on the edge of the Borne river, facing the Aravis Mountains. This humorous, offbeat cow set in a natural environment is a nice, unexpected sight for walkers.

THE BLUE-EYED COW2002 - Remix Concrete and pebbles made sculpture

17

In front of Espace Grand-Bo

Coming from a foreign land, this cow made from pebbles embodies the meeting between sea and mountain. Le Grand-Bornand is twinned with the seaside town of Quiberon (Morbihan, Brittany), where you can find the twin sister of our “Blue-Eyed Cow” on Place du Varquez.

WOODEN COW - MILKY COW

In Espace Grand-Bo

“Making something beautiful from something old” could be the motto of many artists who work with salvaged materials. This cow made of wood and other recycled objects welcomes us in the entrance hall at the Espace Grand-Bo. An assembly of sundry elements of Alpine life, including tools from our grandfathers’ workshops or our grandmothers’ kitchen utensils.

18 THE DRIFTWOOD COW2007Pascal AbbetDriftwood scultpure

In front of Espace Grand-Bo

This sculpture is entirely made from driftwood collected in the River Borne that runs through Le Grand-Bornand. The wood has kept its smooth, polished appearance after a long dip in the lakes and rivers of Savoie. The artwork was created for the first edition of the “Fabulous Village” Festival which was held in Evian-Les-Bains in December 2007.

LOOK MOO IN THE EYES2002Pierre AmoudryMural painting

15

Route du Borne, under the bridge

This mural is first of all a decorative painting. It celebrates the iconic animal of our mountains surrounded by Alpine scenery. This artwork, an imposing cow with the Aravis Mountains in the background, is best seen by night when its “eye-lights” are on.

THE COW ARTS2001Pierre AmoudryMural painting

16

Route du Borne, under the bridge

The first mural painting created for the “Cow Art Tour”, this mural reflects a time influenced by graffiti, street art and spray can paintings. Imposing lettering and bright colours offer a mirror of urban life, with skateboarding and freestyle as the themes of the mural. One for the skaters...

THE SCRAP COWS

Tourist Office of Chinaillon

Old cans, a cart from another age, bolts, and screws of all kinds...here come the Scrap Cows, created in a recycling spirit. Made entirely from salvaged metal objects, these rusty, worn cows are a tribute to the hard mountain life of past times.

THE HISTORY OF COW ART

Route de la Floria

The first mural painted by the Melting Paint collective, with the participation of no fewer than 200 apprentice painters during the week-long “Au Bonheur des Mômes” festival 2007. This group mural recounts the History (with a capital H) of Cow Art by subverting famous paintings.

26MOUNTAIN SPECTRE2018Pierre AmoudrySanded fresc

Ferme de la nature

Displayed on this traditional age-old house in Le Grand-Bornand at the foot of Danay Mountain, this quirky 6m high piece was produced in just over 7 hours using a sanding and dying technique on an old barn’s wooden boards.Artwork funded by the European Union as part of the INTERREG ALCOTRA “Families on the mountain, between nature and culture” project

THE COW TOUR DE FRANCE

217, route de la patinoire

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the famous “Tour de France” cycling competition, this cow was created to welcome the racing cyclists at their arrival in Le Grand-Bornand, a stopover town on 19th July 2013. The kings of cycling were therefore fittingly greeted by the queen of our mountains.

242004Pierre-Louis ChipponMetal sculpture

THE SUCKLED COW

305, route de la patinoire

A former goat farmer, the artist Pierre-Louis Chippon has moved into the field of animal and human sculpture, using mainly old farm tools. An intricate, detailed artwork made from salvaged materials, this cow has pride of place in front of the Heritage House and gives a second life to these obsolete tools.

232014KarlitoMetal sculpture

THE CARIBOU COW

In front of Heritage House

Straddling a sled, this artwork is made of pieces of metal salvaged from the canton’s recycling centres and was made for the “Au Bonheur des Mômes” festival. Quebec was the guest of honour at this 23rd edition, and the artwork celebrates the friendship between Le Grand-Bornand and Sévrier in Haute-Savoie, and Lac Beauport in Quebec.

222002Pierre AmoudryMural painting

THE RUMIN-MAN

In front of Espace Grand-Bo

A half-man, half-bull creature inspired by the American rapper Eminem’s cover album. This spray-painted mural symbolises the encounter between man and beast, against a backdrop of illegal gaming houses and he-men. The technique used by the artist is spray painting, on a concrete wall measuring two metres by eight.

21

REPRESSION2002Marc LucchesiMetal sculpture

In front of Espace Grand-Bo

“Death to cows, death to idiots!” As a committed act, this sculpture aims to pass on to future generations the idea of struggling to break taboos (as was the case in France in 1968). The message advocates non-violence. It is repression “at rest”, looking peacefully at the protest.
