On the road to college it is important to have an open mindset – to understand that you could turn a failure into an opportunity, an experience, and a gift.
Let’s take a look at some successful college thinking that can help you now…
When Confronted With a Challenge or an Obstacle, Have You Ever Thought…
Whatever
There is no point
It is too hard
This is just who
I am
Why waste my time?
I am not good enough

Be Careful!
What If These Were Our Thoughts When Challenges Come Along?
That was difficult, and
I can try harder
I can ask other
people how they have succeeded
Are there any
resources available to
me?What can I do
differently? What worked
or did not work?
What support is
available to me?

Student Profiles
Nathan’s curious thoughts prompted
him to seek help from others and better
manage his time and effort for studying and completing assignments. He
never faced academic probation,
kept his grades above average, and
eventually went on to graduate in a timely
manner
Sarah’s negative thinking lead to behaviors that
reinforced her poor academic
performance. Even though she left high
school with a 4.1 GPA, she eventually withdrew from UCSD and has not yet re-entered a college or university system
Julia’s grades greatly improved with her efforts, her positive thinking lead her to
take actions that enhanced her
chances of success, she passed all of her courses with B’s or
better and eventually graduated from
CSUN
