ON THE H&MOPROTOZOA OF BRITISH SEA-FISH (A PRELIMINARY NOTE)?

By HERBERT HENRY, M.D., R.S.(Lond.), Demonstrator of Pathology in the University of SheBeld, Assistant-Ph,ysician to the Shefleld Royal Hospital.

From thc Pathological Labwatory of the U?aiversit?J of Xhfleld.

ALTHOUGH a considerable amount of work has been done on the protozoan parasites to be found in the blood of freshwater fish, the literature on such parasites as they occur in sea-fish is scanty. From 1901 to 1905 there were published by Laveran and Mesnil (l) ‘ v 3),

by Brumpt and Lebailly (4), and by Lebailly (5) alone, papers on this subject based on material obtained at various points on the coasts of France. Also more recently there has appeared a paper by Neumann ( 6 )

of Heidelberg based on material obtained at the Naples station during the spring months of 1908.

During the last fortnight in September 1909 I was able to obtain specimens of blood taken from 348 different fish caught in or near Port Erin Bay, lsle of Man.

Appended is a complete list of the fish examined:-

I have classified the parasites found into three groups:-

The last group includes parasites which have not hitherto been ,( 1) Haemogregarines, (2) trypanosomes, and (3) new forms.

recognised as occurring in sea-fish.
