Thank You 33

Welcome to our first digital release of our Annual Report on Giving. Although we won’t be physically mailing the publication this year, we hope that everyone is able to

find a moment to enjoy the contents during this time. This edition will provide you with a balance of our financial picture as well as several articles on how our community is perpetually giving (in all senses of the word).

Typically, we write our directors message in early March, when we close the chapter on the previous year and the anticipation for the summer is beginning to build. As you all know, this year is different. We decided to postpone the release of our publication as we quickly shifted our attention and all efforts to managing the impacts of the global health crisis on Belknap. The words we drafted just a few months back now feel written for an audience in a very different world. We now find ourselves reflecting back on 2019, shortly after the final decision to close camp for the 2020 season.

As we take a moment to think back on 2019, we remember an impressive year for Belknap. We had a historic 2019 annual fund season (in both number of donors and total donations) and began many new long-term commitments to both capital projects and endowment growth. This financial footing is allowing Belknap to weather the storm in which we have all found ourselves.

Most notable, however, is the degree to which Belknappers reconnected and rekindled the Belknap Spirit like never before. Belknappers across the world, from new campers to members of our Chief Masqua Band (our 70+ elders in the community), have reached out with unwavering support for the camp we all love. The quantity of heartfelt stories shared could fill volumes, and with families locked down at home together, the reflections of camp’s entire history have flooded in.

With great pleasure, we share these short excerpts from community members who have kept Belknap at the forefront of their minds and reached out to share an old memory or new revelation relating to Belknap:

“Looking back on the many moons since my summers, I remember how each return to camp was like hitting a reset button. A chance to wipe the slate and find my center. I always imagine that Belknap is a place out of time, it's Camelot.”

“Finding my own disposable camera pictures throughout the years, shocked at my really bad photography and strange choice of subject matters (several pictures just of the sun?!)”

“My husband and I were just in conference with our son’s advisor, who complimented his characteristics of leadership, kindness, and respect she hadn't seen in a student his age before. She explained that his confidence in doing the right thing and leading through modeling proper behavior was having an impact on his peers. She then said the only other student who seemed to share these character traits was a senior in her English class. When she mentioned the student’s name, my husband and I almost dropped over! We recognized the name from somewhere else… We couldn't believe that out of all the students at the school, she identified the strength of character of two Camp Belknap boys!”

“A funny/favorite memory is after my Cadet or Junior year and getting mailed an invitation to a cabinmate’s birthday party and my mom explaining to me it was 150 miles away”

The stories are abundant and remind us of the everlasting qualities of our Belknap experiences, and reinforce the moral compass Belknap has been for each of us.

The following pages will highlight some “Belknappy” moments throughout the past year. Sit back, enjoy, and soak up the leadership by example! The lifelong bonds of Belknappers are alive and well and we are confident with a community as strong as this we will continue to provide this most important experience for boys and young men for generations to come.

I write this message at a time when many of you are likely still at home, like me, participating in the necessary distancing measures to keep our communities safe and healthy in the face of a global pandemic. I also write knowing that summer 2020 at Belknap

will be different from anything we have known in our lifetimes. I am encouraged, however, by the outpouring of well wishes and other support we have received over the past months from the Belknap community.

One upside to the stay-at-home world is that it provides an opportunity for reflection: on family, on friends, on loved ones, and on the little things—the Belknap things—that we can do to help move the world through and past these difficult times. Reflecting on Belknap’s 2019 season is a nice way to take your mind off the current state of affairs, so flip through these pages and enjoy. Last summer’s weather was superb, the lake was warm, the sessions were full, and the leadership and staff did their usual stellar job. The first wave of Juniors got to enjoy their newly crafted division. The “lagoon” was finally decommissioned with approval from the State of New Hampshire, allowing Belknap to move into the 21st century in terms of wastewater management. The Kitchen Division had its first successful summer, with hopes that this new leadership model will be part of Belknap for years to come.

All of this has been part of the Strategic Plan that we as a board have been implementing alongside our Co-Directors, Seth and Stephanie Kassels. And none of this would have been possible without your generosity. Annual giving in 2019 reached a total of $465,153, the highest amount in Belknap’s history. This will allow Belknap to continue doing what it does best—offering a simple, fun, choice-based camping experience to kids regardless of ability to pay—even as we execute on the large capital projects described above.

Now, more than ever, it’s important to keep the Belknap spirit alive. Thank you for helping us do that, in 2019 and in every year.

Tom Wintner CHair, CaMp belknap board of trustees

Summary of FInancial Information Statement of financial position

Belknap’s financial position strengthened in 2019 due to a full camp, parents paying full tuition (when able), our Annual Giving Program, and capital gifts. We are humbled by our community’s

support and are excited to share with you the direct impact of your gifts. With uncertain financial times currently affecting all of us, the commitment of campers, parents, staff and alumni in 2019 will carry Belknap through 2020 and beyond. We provide you with the following summary of financial information so that you can better understand the security of Belknap’s financial future.

In 2019 we provided over $225,000 in scholarships for boys to attend Belknap. As our endowment grows, it allows us to support Belknap’s main day-to-day operations including scholarships. In 2019 we drew $80,000 from our endowment to support camp operations.1

We received financial support of $2 million dollars in 2019! This doubled the support we received in 2018. Once again, our community recognizes Belknap’s need to support our infrastructure and programs—thank you.

From 2014 through 2018 Belknap invested approximately $2.5 million dollars into our physical plant. In 2019, Belknap continued to focus on long term infrastructure updates by investing approximately $2.7 million dollars into the replacement of aging infrastructure. These projects included the completion of the Junior Division, a New Waste Water Treatment Plant, and new Year Round Housing. These projects were funded through donations

and short term debt to be repaid through capital gift pledges. The Junior Division upgrades include the construction

of a new scollege (bathhouse), new tennis/street hockey court, basketball court and the realignment of the division to reduce runoff and provide a more communal experience. In addition, this project has provided the opportunity to shift camp’s main entrance and bury and upgrade all utilities, providing a greater buffer between our campers and vehicle traffic.

The new Waste Water Treatment Plant is complete and functional, providing a state of the art environmentally sensitive treatment system with a planned operating life of 50 years. Our Year Round House now provides greater benefits to members of our year round and seasonal staff by providing a three bedroom home and a studio apartment that may be occupied year round.

In addition, in 2019 we upgraded our rescue boat, replacing a 20 year-old boat with a new boat that provides greater ability to safely monitor our larger sailing program. We also replaced all of our kayaks, upgraded soccer goals, replaced ageing facilities equipment and invested in engineering and design for future Master Site Plan work.

We pride ourselves at Belknap in providing an experience for our boys that anchors them in the present, yet prepares them for their future. We are so appreciative of the Belknap community, and that it recognizes our current needs and understands how this will secure Belknap’s future for generations to come.

The Statement of Financial Position provides an overview of Camp Belknap’s total liabilities and assets. Figures below are based on audited financials .

1Belknap’s annual endowment draw is calculated as 3% of the endowment’s five year trailing average.

1Investments, at fair value, is Belknap’s endowment. 22018 Accumulated Depreciation is adjusted to reflect the removal of out-dated assets. 3The majority of the proceeds from the long-term debt incurred in 2019 was used for a year round house and new wastewater plant. 4WAssets with Donor Restrictions provide income that is used for camper scholar-ships and certain aspects of camp operations. In addition, a portion of these assets are designated for capital projects.

With Belknap’s 2020 operations now cancelled, we provide an overview of Belknap’s current financial situation. In review, it is likely that COVID-19 will

impact almost every aspect of our lives for years to come. We are hard at work to ensure that Belknap remains a strong, mission-driven organization. Not operating this summer has both cultural and financial implications.

We have made decisions to put our people first and iden-tify financial tools to prioritize Belknap’s greatest strength—our staff and leaders. Our full-time year-round staff will remain employed at their pre COVID-19 pay scales. This decision is not only in the Spirit of Belknap, but also wise for the long-term health and culture of Belknap. The strength of our year-round team is the reason at this moment that Belknap can properly manage a crisis like this. Going forward in the coming months and years, the impacts of COVID will require Belknap to adjust all aspects of our business including, camper registration, safety protocols, fundraising and facilities. This will take the entire efforts of the year-round team to successfully manage the new chal-lenges in the during and following this global health crisis.

The strength of the Belknap experience is directly related to our leadership. Our homegrown program has continu-ally strengthened over the past 60+ years. Therefore, we have guaranteed that all staff LCs through DH and all seasonal staff may return in 2021. This will create an op-portunity to accelerate strategic staffing initiatives such as the already underway Kitchen Division. Guaranteeing everyone can return, will also add an additional cost to 2021 payroll of up to $55,000. The Senior Leaders, with support of Dave Irwin, will run Senior Recognition through a still-to-be -defined process. In addition, paying our summer staff and leaders will allow us to engage them in a variety of remote and if deemed safe on-site work in

2020. Our focus on staff will ensure we return in 2021 with a strong leadership.

More specifically, Belknap’s 2020 Budget was originally built based on the following revenue model:

1 Registration Fees: $180K 1 Tuition: $2.3MM 1 Pre/Post Income: $50K (family camp, women’s weekend) 1 Total 2020 Revenue: $2.53 MM

Belknap has implemented a variety of financial measures to bridge the loss of revenue, while continuing to pay staff salaries for 2020 including: reducing expenses, spending down accumulated cash reserves, deferring certain capital projects, borrowing funds where available with attractive terms, accepting grants from the federal government, seek-ing donations above and beyond the Annual Fund and making a modest supplemental draw from our endowment.

These measures will allow Belknap to endure, but will impact camp’s planning, physical plant and finances in the coming years. In particular, we will face the following hardships totaling approximately $1Million:

1 Reduction in cash reserves by $335,0001 Deferment of maintenance work $250,0001 Additional Debt of $325,0001 Supplemental Endowment Draw of $110,000 To overcome these challenges and to sustain Belknap

into the future, we are seeking additional support from our community. We have already received some targeted donations to support us in this difficult time. To the ex-tent that additional support is received, it will allow us to reduce our use of operating cash, reduce additional debt, and reduce the supplemental draw from the endowment.

On a frosty September morning in 2019, members of the greater Belknap community assembled at Stowe Acres Golf Course for the Ryan “Happy” McCormack Memorial

Golf Tournament. The event, in addition to being a great opportunity

to re-kindle the fires of friendship, also served as a fund raiser for the Ryan McCormack Camper Scholarship

Fund. Through the efforts and generosity of more than 100 families, a camper scholarship has been endowed in perpetuity to honor the memory and legacy of Ryan J. McCormack. The Ryan McCormack Scholarship Fund will sustain the joy for boys that would otherwise not be able to spend their summers under the pines.

The weekend was full of light and laughter. Highlights from the Tally include:

In June 2002, Ryan arrived at Belknap for the first time. Shortly after arriving at camp Ryan, who liked to try new things, went off to play mini golf with some new friends. Upon arriving at the first hole Ryan, always

ready to get the laughter going, immediately imitated Happy Gilmore’s unique style, crow-hopping his first putt, and then holding his putter hockey-stick-style for the remainder of the round. In the eight summers that followed, and in the years since, Ryan was known to many exclusively as ‘Happy’.

In the years since Belknap, Ryan’s kindness and humor brought joy to the lives of many. After graduat-ing from the College of Wooster, he lived in Brook-lyn, NY where he cultivated a group of friends who encouraged each other in the pursuit of various arts, including comedy and music. Wherever Ryan lived throughout his life, he was able to develop meaning-ful friendships with those around him. Ryan was full of light, and he is dearly missed by his Belknap family.

To mark the 45th anniversary of their 1971 LIT summer at Belknap, Dave Eastman, Tom Jack-son and Gary Morse met at Camp on October 17, 2016. At some point during their time

planning the get together, Roman Apple Cake had come up in conversation as a piece of history that still made them salivate. While the three men enjoyed that beautiful October day walking around their beloved Belknap, the opportunity arose to ask a question they all had on their mind...

As two staffers exited the screen door of the kitchen into the parking lot, Eastman asked, “excuse me, can we take a look at the recipe for RAC?”

Melissa and Judy, the food service managers at the time, invited them into the kitchen where they all chat-ted and Gary took a photo of the recipe, laughing out loud that it was “Roman Apple Cake for 500 people”. The three visiting Belknappers delighted in the fact the recipe was framed on the wall.

Over the winter, Dave brought the recipe to a friend in the restaurant business for some help converting the recipe to “family size”. From here the ingredient mea-surements were converted to a regular cake pan amount. Gary baked several batches and used his sons Dustin and Adam, ‘90s Belknap alums, as a trusted tasting panel. The Roman Apple Cake brotherhood was at work!

Meanwhile, in a parallel boomalackaverse, Belknappers rekindled their camp memories high above Rockefeller Center at a community gathering at Trustee Mark Kesslen’s law firm, where Doug Mallach shared a story about his

love for RAC, a memory filed away in the past from his summers in the late 70s and early 80s: “But then I dropped off William two years ago for his cadet year—and what was waiting in Conlon Lodge? Sheets of RAC! It made a great day even better. The good old days were back!”

That evening, Doug learned that, indeed, there was a brotherhood of Roman Apple Cake, and that other former Belknappers were dedicated to the pursuit of perpetuating RAC in the world, not just under the pines. In due time, he was introduced to Gary, who shared his scaled-down recipe in progress. A correspondence ensued, and quickly Doug learned that it's a sisterhood as well. His wife, Lisa, by far the better baker in the Mallach’s home, began understand-ing the importance of RAC to both her husband and son, and even her brother-in-law and longtime Belknapper, Dan Mallach. William's role was primarily that of the testing expert. He was a big fan, but is lucky enough to still have the real thing each summer as a current camper.

Like any passion project, there was a learning curve. At first, the home recipe didn't work. The pan was too deep. The apples weren't right. Not enough crunch on top. But in time, and with teamwork, they achieved greatness, and it met the Mallach Family’s expectations: “moist cake, just right” apple-to-cake ratio, proper thick-ness, and lots of the special crunchy sugar on top that gives you that ‘let's go back to the cabin and clean the sand out my bunk for inspection’ euphoria!”

For the RAC before us and the friends around us, we give thanks. Amen.

What it meant to “Be with the Boys”

Ken Gould 1939 - 2019

A salon under the pines

Acceptance, Creativity & Trendsetting at Camp

Ken was born and raised in Wolfeboro, NH, the son of Jesse and Dorothy Gould, who owned and operated Gould's Dime Store on N. Main Street. He attended Carpenter

School and Brewster Academy. In high school, he was a good student, a star of the ski team, co-captain of the soccer team, sang in the glee club, and served as class president.

Like other local business owners, Ken's parents focused on the business during the busy summer tourist season. Lucky for him, he grew up in a place with wonderful summer camps. Other kids might have resented being sent to camp all summer for many years, but Ken loved Camp Belknap. He started at age 8 and attended until he started working summers in the dime store as a teenager. He particularly loved waterfront activities; swimming and boating. Every year he looked forward to returning to the Tuftonboro woods and the companionship of his fellow camp friends.

He imparted his passion for camp on to nephews, hoping they would enjoy it as much as he did. He felt strongly that boys, surrounded by sisters at home, could find wonderful camaraderie with other boys in similar situations. Being with boys for the summer weeks was uplifting for Ken.

His younger sister, Jeanne, remembers the enthusiasm and Belknap Spirit he carried, always. “I remember when he came home from camp, with all his swimming awards, and telling me about each badge. He shared all the details and the requirements of each level (minnow, fish, flying fish, and shark), how long each level took to pass, and what came next. His true accomplishment was paddling a boat to the nearby island Little Huck for an overnight experience. He shared similar memories with his daughters, especially about camping on the island and, in later years, mentoring the younger boys he en-couraged to attend as campers.”

Published in Union Leader on Nov. 27, 2019, Ken’s obituary highlighted his love for camp, and requested that memorial donations in his memory be made to Belknap. Many donated in memory of Ken including:: Jim & Jean D. Jackson, Nan R. Canfield, Betty Stevens & Family, Robin Dressel, Lydia Gould Bessler, Wendy Kirk, Kristen Burnham, Richard A. West, Gregory Burnham, Kris Burnham’s friends on the Officers Group: Marc DeNicuolo, Jeff, Jodi, Wil, Dave B, Teri, Jess, Angela, Dave S, Kim, Kris Burnham’s friends on the Leadership Team: Marc DeNicuolo, Yvonne, Amy, Bill, Molly, Dan, Mark, Steve Bradford, Piper Bolt, Janet Smith, and Kimberly Stephen.

Nathaniel Klein, 2020 Besserer DH, was recently recognized as an “Ambassador of Mentoring” by MENTOR Vermont! Nathaniel was honored for his outstanding

work mentoring over the past ten years through the Middlebury College Community Friends program.

In his own words, Nathaniel shares his approach to youth mentoring and how that is reflected in his leader-ship at Belknap:

“A few summers ago, a camper of mine received a pack-age in the mail intended for his sister, meaning when he opened the box, he found nail polish instead of fart puddy. Rather than getting upset, he laughed and proceeded

to paint his fingernails vibrant shades of pink, blue and orange. I joined him and soon other campers flocked to decorate their own nails. The activity spread like wildfire as my campers bragged about their artistic masterpieces to the other cabins, and in almost no time we had 20 ten year olds running around with painted nails.

Belknap gives boys a place to act like boys in every traditional and non-traditional sense of the word. No one expects you to fit in a box and everyone can be them-selves. You can be emotional, show vulnerability, and yes, even paint your fingernails without being judged. Mentoring allows me to have fun with kids and support them in who they want to be.”Submitted by his sister, Jeanne Morrison, and two daughters, Kristen Gould Burnham (Keith) and Lydia Gould Bessler)

the other fellow

On a Fall day this past year, Belknapper Davis Cote, was about to finish one of the biggest cross-country races of his Junior year at Wilton High School. Davis was nearing the

finish of his race when he saw a competitor struggling and eventually collapse in the final 200-meter straightaway.

Davis recounts, “I saw (my competitor) and he looked out of it… He was limping and stumbling, and he eventually collapsed right next to me. Without really thinking I just picked him up.” In this moment Davis epitomized what it means to be a Belknapper by aiding his competitor across the finish line. Davis, a member of the 2019 Leader Corps, truly embodied our motto of putting the other fellow before yourself.

Some Belknap Artifacts from the Archives and the Director's collection that inspired the new visual identity of Camp.

An update to a classic

Former Belknapper Looks to the Archives to Update Camp’s Visual Identity

Back in fall of 2017 at a Manhattan meet up of Belknappers, Advancement Director, Geoff Masland and his ’98 LC Cabinmate Patrick Albertson caught up about all things Camp.

Albertson, an art director and designer casually offered to help with any design needs they might have, which started a conversation that would go deep into Camp’s archives and design history, reach back and help to bring it into the future.

After further conversation with Directors Seth and Stephanie Kassels, Albertson’s studio, Pance Creative

agreed to take on the project and he scheduled a trip to Camp that November to begin research.

“The most important thing with an iconic institution like Camp is to honor its heritage.” says Albertson. “I had noticed some inconsistency in the Belknap market-ing materials over the years—I mean there are definitely eras, but I felt strongly that something as significant as the letter B on hats and shirts should be standardized and in-stantly recognizable—and we approached it from there.”

The archives proved to be a rich source of inspiration for Pance. He said, “Going back to the early days of camp in the beginning of the last century, the elements were all there, the classic letter B that you can see on the shirts of campers in the camp photos at Conlon—and there was a beautiful monogram that goes back almost to be beginning as well, and it lasted well into the nineteen

sixties, but somewhere along the line it disappeared. I developed a set of type that could work as both the stand alone single-letter and be woven into the CB monogram. It actually ended up looking strikingly like a version we uncovered from 1914, but in this new system we have developed a whole typeface around it."

As for the other brand guidelines and styling, no colors or type styles were changed, it just took a good eye for ty-pography and design to put them together in a fresh look.

“Belknap has been consistently using Garamond for a typeface as long as I can tell, which is a super versatile,

classic font and that consistency really creates a feel for the Belknap brand. We simply tightened up the typography and brought a classic, clean feel to everything. My hope is that this new incarnation can maintain the consistency across some of the other visual elements that make Camp Belknap what it is.”

In addition to the new logo, type design, and styling updates, Pance also streamlined the iconic woodcraft symbol into something that is unique Belknap.

“The Woodcraft symbol was so spindly that it was hard to use well in small spaces, so we wanted to tighten that up to be more versatile and to match the weight and feel of the other new elements. I think it's been a huge addition to the design lexicon here at Belknap.”

The new look has been well-received in response to recent Camp Publications and strong sales in Camp Store.

Please contact us to learn more about your planned giving op-tions, as the Advancement staff will be pleased to discuss the virtues or limitations depending on your personal circumstanc-es. Joining the White Pines Society acknowledges your com-

mitment to Belknap’s mission and sets an example for others to follow.Planned gifts may be made through a bequest or by naming

Camp Belknap as a beneficiary of part or all of a retirement asset. Bequests may help fulfill your philanthropic goals without relin-quishing current assets and may provide tax relief for you or your heirs. Gift methods come in all shapes and sizes, and we believe that what is best for you and your family is best for Camp Belknap.
