BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

As you are looking for activities for your children to participate

in before and after school, I just wanted to give you a "heads-up"

about where to look for activities that are happening at Bear

Creek, and which ones are Bear Creek and BVSD sponsored.

*In Bear Tracks, you will see opportunities for your children to

participate in school sponsored clubs such as intramural sports,

jump rope, Spotlights, and drumming club. Bear Creek clubs are

supervised by Bear Creek staff.

*Lifelong Learning, which is part of BVSD's Community Schools

Program runs many wonderful activities for students in schools

across the district. If you go to their web-page you can find

great kid classes, many of which will happen right at our school!

Lifelong Learning will send you mail alerts of activities that are

happening at Bear Creek. You can sign up for classes at any loca-

tion, but parents have found it particularly accommodating when

classes happen right at Bear Creek. This fall at Bear Creek Life-

long Learning will offer at Bear Creek such things as chess, bas-

ketball, Spanish classes, and Lego building.

.

**If you have an incoming kindergartener or

know of an incoming kindergartener for

2016-2017, please stop by the office and

make sure they are on our list.**

Kindergarten enrollment is now open for the

2016-2017 school year.

Trip Tracker Update January is the time for New Year’s resolutions, and what could be better than a resolution to have your children bike and walk more to school? Active commuting improves health and fitness, enhances cognitive function and attention, reduces car traffic and congestion, and decreases pollution and natural resource utilization. Why not make a vow to walk or bike with your child at least once a month if you don’t do so already? Or if time or distance limit your ability to walk or bike all the way from home, why not try parking on a nearby street and at least walking the final quarter or half mile or so? The beauty of the Trip Tracker program is that it rewards any and all active trips, and allows you to track your progress each month to help you stay on track for your resolution! Perhaps your child has less need for Trip Tracker dollars. Why not make a resolution to donate some or all of those dollars to charity? Here are just a few of the ways Trip Tracker dollars can be used to help other people in our community: -Sell them back to the Trip Tracker program. Peter Hurst, the head of the Trip Tracker program, buys them back at 50 cents on the dollar, which Mr. Hurst then donates to these local charities: Community Cycles and the Human Society in Boulder and Sister Carmen in Lafayette. -Use Trip Tracker dollars to buy non-perishable foods or other goods at participating stores and then donate these to local charities like food banks, clothing drives, etc. The complete list of participating businesses is here: http://www.bvsd.org/transportation/toschool/tracker/Pages/businesses.aspx -Use Trip Tracker dollars to buy food at participating local businesses on the list above to give to the homeless or less fortunate. -Give Trip Tracker dollars to the homeless instead of cash, especially near participating local businesses where they might be able to buy things they need. If you are still not enrolled in Trip Tracker, it is never too late to sign up! Even if you do just one car-free commute a month, your child can still receive Trip Tracker Dollars. Register at http://www.bvsd.org/transportation/toschool/tracker/Pages/registration.aspx

2015 Share-a-Coat Program

Boulder Valley Rotary Club Art Cleaners

The Boulder Valley Rotary Club and Art Cleaners teamed up once again for the 24th annual coat drive

collection and distribution. With the help of many community members, nearly 2,500 coats and many

other winter garments such as sweaters, snowsuits, hats, gloves, scarves and boots were collected

through various Boulder and Broomfield County schools and usinesses. These winter garments were

distributed earlier this winter to people in need through the following charitable organizations:

Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence, Boulder Day Nursery, First Presbyterian Church, Clinica

Campesina Family Health Service, People's Medical Clinic, Lafayette Medical Clinic, Angevine Middle

School , Boulder Community Transition Center, Boulder Shelter for the Homeless, Colorado Friendship,

Boulder County AIDS Program, Boulder Valley Women's Health Center, Mesa Vista, Attention Homes,

Attention Homes, Bridge House, Family Self-Sufficiency, San Juan Family Learning Center, and Boulder

Outreach for Homeless Overflow.

This is an all volunteer effort. Boulder Valley Rotary members collected, sorted and distributed the coats

and Art Cleaner donated the cleaning services. In addition, the Boulder Valley Rotary Club provides a

cash prize to the schools which collect the most coats per student in three categories based on school

Library News

A special thank you goes out to those shoppers at Grandrabbits Toy Shoppe who remembered to mention Bear Creek when checking out. This year we earned over $300 in store credit, which has been used to purchase new books for the library. Don’t forget to patronize this generous local business when shopping for toys and books for children. (Grandrabbits donates a percentage of sales to a school of your choice.)

Remember we have online subscriptions that students can use at home to read or create artwork. Students can access Tumblebooks ebook library by going to Tumblebooklibrary.com. The username is bearcreek and pass word is books. Students can also access Wixie, an online creation program, by going to Wixie.com. They need to choose log in with Google; then they can log in with their Google username and password. (Username: first letter of student's name, up to seven letters of last name, last four digits of student/lunch number plus @bvsd.org at end, (e.g. [email protected]) and password: bvsd.student number + the letter b(e.g. bvsd.234567b). Fifth grade students choose their own pass words, so they will log in with this password.) They can also access both of these sites and others by visiting the Bear Creek library website: https://sites.google.com/a/bvsd.org/bear-creek-library/.

Perseverance By Dr. John C. Maxwell

Perseverance is not an issue of talent. It is not an issue of time. It is about finishing.

Talent provides hope for accomplishment, but perseverance guarantees it.

Running Past Failure

As a small child, Vonetta (Jeffrey) Flowers

dreamed about being in the Olympics. She

ran everywhere she went, and gained a

reputation among her school friends for

being quick. At age nine, Vonetta learned

she had special talent. While trying out for

an inner-city track club in her hometown of

Birmingham, she shocked coaches by

posting the best sprint time for Jonesboro

Elementary School - running faster than

boys two years older than she was!

Vonetta's immense talent carried her to the

University of Alabama-Birmingham on a

track-and-field scholarship. While at the

university, she continued to pursue her

goal of gaining a spot on the Olympic

team. She practiced meticulously to perfect

her stride, spent hours in the weight room

adding strength, and ran grueling intervals

to shave seconds off her sprint times.

Thanks to her combination of talent and

discipline, Vonetta ended her college

career as a 7-time All-American, competing

in the 100 meter and 200 meter sprints,

long jump, triple jump, heptathlon, and

relays.

With her college career finished, Vonetta

set her sights on the 1996 Olympics.

Unfortunately, she failed to qualify for the

team, running slightly behind the leaders.

The failure stung, but Vonetta was

determined not to give up. She found a job

as an assistant coach and continued her

regimen of training.

For the next four years, Vonetta put her

body through punishing workouts with an

eye on the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. In

her words, "I devoted countless hours to

lifting weights, eating right, and staying

mentally tough. I knew that my time as an

athlete was coming to an end, and I'd

hoped that the 2000 Olympic trials would

prove to be my year to finally find out what

it's like to be an Olympian."

In June 2000, Vonetta lined up again to run

at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Unfortunately,

Vonetta placed 13th, and she failed to

make the Olympic squad. Although one of

the fastest women in America, she wasn't

in the select group to represent the United

States in Sydney. After 17 years of

training, she had come up empty in her

quest for the Olympics.

Two days after her second painful failure in

the Olympic Trials, Vonetta's husband

spotted an advertisement for tryouts for the

United States Olympic bobsled team. He

Page 11: Bear Creek wins at LEGO Robotics State Championship! Newsletter Documents/BT 01.29.1… · 22 Need Clothes!! Bear Creek Elementary 2500 Table Mesa Drive Boulder, CO 80305 Kent Cruger,

convinced her to go to the tryouts. Growing

up in the South, Vonetta was not

accustomed to cold and snow, and she

knew next to nothing about bobsledding.

However, at the tryouts her unusual blend

of speed and strength proved to be ideal

qualities for a brakewoman (the person

who pushes the bobsled to give it initial

momentum and then hops in with the

driver). Vonetta was chosen for the team.

Vonetta's decision to join the bobsled team

came with a price - two more years of a

strict diet, sore muscles, and countless

hours dedicated to attaining peak physical

fitness. It also meant delaying her dream to

be a mom. However, her years of

perseverance paid off. Not only did Vonetta

achieve her lifelong goal of competing in

the Olympics, but she also became the first

African-American to win a gold medal in

the winter Olympics!

Perseverance punctuates talent

Vonetta's talent seemed almost limitless,

but it wouldn't have carried her to the

Olympics without an admirable measure of

perseverance. Life seems designed to

make a person quit. For even the most

talented individual, obstacles abound, and

failures are commonplace. Only when a

person matches talent with perseverance

do opportunities become avenues of

success.

Perseverance means succeeding

because you are determined to, not

destined to

If Vonetta had seen her Olympic dream as

a matter of destiny than she likely would

have given up after her second failure to

make the track and field team. After 17

years of training, the results signaled that

her dream wasn't meant to be. She had no

natural reason to be hopeful about her

prospects. However, she pressed on,

determined to find a way to take hold of her

goals, and in the end, she was rewarded

with success.

Perseverance means stopping, not

because you're tired, but because the

task is done

Perseverance doesn't come into play until

a person is tired. A year or two after

college, Vonetta still was riding the

excitement of her collegiate track and field

championships. She was young, energetic,

and optimistic about the future. Nothing

was telling her to stop, and consequently

she needed nothing extra to keep going.

However, after a taste of disappointment at

the Olympic Trials, fatigue and

discouragement crept up on Vonetta. The

mountain of work in front of her began to

look more and more daunting, and her

dream began to be a little harder to

imagine. Nonetheless, Vonetta persevered.

She kept believing, she kept training, and

she kept running until she finally caught up

with success.

The Bear Creek Rhythm Rockers

The Bear Creek Rhythm Rockers is a percussion ensemble open to any

3rd, 4th or 5th grader who wants to strengthen their sense of community

by joining together in a wild rumpus of rhythms and sounds! This group

meets every Thursday morning before school in the music room with

Mrs. James from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Already in intramurals and still

want to join? Don't worry! You can do both! 4th and 5th graders can

come to percussion ensemble on Thursday and intramurals on Friday!

Email Mrs. James with questions at [email protected]. And click here to sign-up!

The Golden Shoe Award

The Golden Shoe Award is given periodically (whenever we receive a good nomination from anyone

in our community) to students or staff members to recognize them for their car-free commuting

efforts.

Pictured below is Lula Graham who was nominated by Danielle Vrieze. Lula was spotted slowly

walking along her path to school collecting trash along the way. Her good deeds were clearly

inspiring and soon a couple other Bear Creekers start to help her and

add to her collection. Most of the trash found was from school grounds.

If you have someone you want to nominate, just send

Mr. Cruger an e-mail ([email protected]).

The Success Effect - BVSD Strategic Plan

Dear parent or guardian,

Boulder Valley School District expects and fosters a high level of achievement from all students and we are working to continuously increase students’ opportunities for success. That’s why we’ve spent the last three years engaging our staff and community members in crafting new district goals and a strategic plan designed to raise the bar even higher. Our goal is to create challenging, meaningful and engaging learning opportunities for all students, help every child reach their learning potential regardless of socioeconomic status, and honor each child’s indi-vidual learning style to promote success.

We call our new strategic plan The Success Effect, a comprehensive effort to address our goals of excellence and equity from three distinct angles: Talent, Learning, and Partnerships. As you’ll see from the attached flier, each lens will help us ensure that your child gets the most out of every school day, so every student is prepared for a successful future after graduation.

For more information, please visit the website bvsdsuccesseffect.org.

Thank you for partnering with us to help all Boulder Valley students succeed in school.

Sincerely, Bruce Messinger, Ph.D., Superintendent & the Success Effect Executive Committee

New Safe2Tell mobile app helps keep students safe

Student safety is a high priority in the Boulder Valley School District. One of the ways the district works

to ensure students are safe is by partnering with local law enforcement officials on programs like

Safe2Tell, a state-funded strategic initiative of the Colorado Department of Law, Office of the Attorney

General. Beginning in 2004, Safe2Tell has provided a phone tip line that students can call anytime to

report concerns about threats that may endanger them or someone they know. The caller remains

anonymous.

Safe2Tell now has a free mobile app that offers students, parents and community members a more

convenient and modern alternative to the phone line. The app allows people to submit secure,

anonymous safety concerns and to upload dialogue, images and video. The reports are sent to a live

24/7 answering point where they are handled by professionals who provide the information to Colorado

school administrators and law enforcement officials. This can enable quick, effective interventions that

prevent violence and tragedies from happening.

Find this app in the Apple App Store or Google Play by searching for any of the following: Safe2Tell, Safe

2 Tell or Safe to Tell.

Safe2Tell fields reports about a wide variety of threats, including:

• Bullying and physical threats

• Domestic violence and child abuse

• Assaults and harassment

• Sexual assault and misconduct

• Alcohol and drugs

• Suicide threats

• Gangs and fights

• Explosives, guns, knives and other weapons

• Stealing and vandalism

• Starting fires

• Internet misuse

• Ditching

• Animal cruelty

Tips can still be submitted on the Safe 2 Tell website at safe2tell.org or by calling the 24-hour tip line at

877-542-SAFE (7233).

Student accident insurance 2015-2016

Low-cost student accident insurance is again being offered by Markel this year. They have changed their enrollment method from

paper to electronic and will not be providing print outs to schools to distribute to students. Attached is a PDF of their enrollment

information. This information is also available on the district website at

http://www.bvsd.org/employees/AthleticsActivities/Athletic%20Insurance%20Information/Forms/AllItems.aspx.

Healthy Kids Initiative

Another possible option for parents whose students need health insurance is the Boulder County Healthy Kids Initiative which

helps families enroll in Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+) and Medicaid. CHP+ and Medicaid are free and low-cost health insurance

plans that provide dental, medical, prescription, mental health, and vision benefits. There are no monthly premiums, and co-pays

range from $0 - $15 depending on family income. CHP+ has higher income eligibility limits than many public assistance programs,

so many working families can qualify. Assets are not considered when determining eligibility for these programs. Some families

who have not previously qualified may be able to qualify now due to new income guidelines.

Eligibility specialists are available to serve families at all BVSD schools. Call 720-515-1454 today to talk with a specialist or to make

an appointment!

More information is available on the district website at http://www.bvsd.org/healthykids. A link to this page is on the front page of

the district site: Go to www.bvsd.org and click the Healthy Kids Initiative logo at the bottom of the page.
