THE COMMUNITY CENTRE WILL BE CLOSED SEPTEMBER 2ND - LABOUR DAY
Manager’s Corner SEPTEMBER REWARDS
Picking, mowing, digging up, busy farmers at work in fields,
hoping for minimal amounts of rain so it won’t affect their yields.
We’re fortunate, here in Delta,
to have so many local food crops, available in farmer’s markets and in our green-grocer shops.
As our summer comes to an end,
children are back in school, universities are back in session, and routines, once again, rule.
Parents and Grandparents have more time
to do what they like to do, sign up for courses and workshops to enhance their points of view.
Check out the Fall agenda of KinVillage activities,
there’s lots for us to choose from, to work, play, or just to please.

I hope everyone had a very enjoyable and relaxing summer. We have lots of great new programs to try out and a slew of special events coming up. Consider introducing a friend to all the fun we have here at KinVillage. I am forever surprised at how many people, right here in Tsawwassen, have no idea we exist, or think of us strictly as a care home. Together, let’s spread the word. There are many seniors who are isolated and could benefit from the activities and camaraderie we provide here.
I am very impressed with the green thumbs we have among us. The garden plots out back have been providing their owners with a nice harvest. I thought Jack was going to climb right up Joseph’s bean stalks they were getting so tall. Also, a big congratulations to the OsteoFit participants who are gaining strength and balance and taking control of their fitness levels!
A few events worth mentioning: 1) The Fall Prevention Clinic has a few spots left. Nowhere else can you get 90 minutes of personal professional attention for FREE. 2) We have an eager leader for our Arts & Crafts sessions - join us each month to make a gift to give away or to keep for yourself. 3) We’re getting back to our regular luncheons. Join us for this month’s down home, hearty meal followed by a square dance. Join in or just watch as we do-si-do and allemande this way and that. No experience required. 4) Come learn how to keep your brain healthy with the presentation by the Alzheimer Society. 5) Guys, come learn how to keep other parts healthy as well with the informal talk on Prostate Health. 6) Add 1, 2, or all 3 of our new classes - Stretch, Meditation, Zumba - to your wellness repertoire. 7) And wrap up the month with a fun, social hour with free live entertainment. There is something for everyone!
One last note! HAPPY GRANDPARENTS’ DAY - on Sept. 8th - to all who hold that title!

Community Centre News September 2019
CONGRATULATIONS SHARI & KEN - Oh, what a day!
The friendship trees. Margaret recruited many of their friends to each make a flower.
Two trees shown - four altogether.
Margaret Ryding got together more than 34 friends of the happy couple to ensure that every little detail was taken care of. Some volunteered for many, many days and hours. What an amazing transformation of our hall. Pavan, with Buenos Dias Café, and chef Moe, produced an excellent dinner. The music Shari selected was played by Margaret’s son-in-law, a professional DJ. Everyone enjoyed the dancing, especially the chicken dance! The wedding photographer was John Green. We were pleased to see that the event was so well covered by the Optimist (thanks again to Margaret for giving them a heads up).
A snooker table beautifully disguised.
Even Reception and Buenos Dias Café got Margaret’s touch.
Even the wedding cake got bejeweled.
Sincere thanks to Beth and all the gals for so enthusiastically representing KinVillage in the Sun Festival parade. KinVillage won the award for Best Community Organization.

September Wellness Page September 2019
September is World Al heimer’s Month World Alzheimer's Month is the international campaign every September to raise
awareness and challenge the stigma that surrounds dementia.
The facts
Dementia is a term used to describe different brain disorders that affect memory, thinking, behaviour and emotion.
Early symptoms can include memory loss, difficultly performing familiar tasks, problems with language and changes in personality. There is currently no cure for dementia.
Dementia knows no social, economic, or ethnic boundaries.
How can I reduce my risk? Staying active, eating well, and engaging in social activities all promote good brain health. Keeping your heart healthy, including avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, can also lower your risk of dementia.
Risk Factors Include: family background exposures to a substance or product age a strong family history of dementia excessive alcohol consumption head injury high blood pressure diabetes smoking being overweight. Any or all of these increase the risk of getting dementia. Adapted from the Al heimer’s Society of BC. Please check the Wellness board or see Eva if yo ’ i e more info.
Bob Tomyk, Support Group Chair, will be dropping by to chat with the guys at
10 am, Thursday, Sept. 19th.
You can meet him in the Café. We hope your supportive partner will come along as well.
SEPTEMBER IS ALSO PROSTATE AWARENESS MONTH
The cause of Prostate Cancer is not known but research suggests genetics, a high-fat diet and lack of exercise may play a role. The growth of cancer cells is stimulated by male hormones. Symptoms are usually unrecognizable, which is why yearly checkups after the age of 40 is advised.
Heads Up: An introduction to brain health
10-12, Tuesday, Sept. 17th
in the MP Room.
DEMENTIA What part of your brain might be under attack?
Please sign up at Reception.
