Jack Coughlin, one of the most active

members of the Los Angeles Chapter,

passed away on 30 April 2009. He was 76.

Jack always went above and beyond the

call of duty for his Chapter and the 1st

Marine Division Association. He held every

office in the Los Angeles County Chapter

except for Sergeant-at-Arms, and mentored

and provided direction and guidance to

many of the past presidents and officers.

Here is an excerpt from Dale Turner’s

“Editor’s Corner” in the Los Angeles

County Chapter’s June 2009 newsletter:

Jack made it known that he wanted a fewthings. First, he wanted “echo Taps” played athis funeral, and he also wanted a Bagpiper.This was accomplished thanks to two of ourChapter Buglers, Lenny Schaustal andRichard Oldenburg and a Piper from theScottish Black Watch Regiment.

Next he wanted to see one of the new MarineCorps Palominos named after the Bodfish

Chapter. This was accomplished just 12 daysbefore Jack’s passing. I delivered that infor-mation in person to him, which put a bigsmile on his face. The horse’s name is“Bodfish Reno.”

Turner also wrote these words of advice

which might be of value to all FMDA mem-

bers:

It’s time to tell someone what you want whenyou get your final duty station orders. Don’twait until you’re circling the drain and can’tspeak or no one can understand what you’resaying.

Get a piece of paper and start jotting downwhat you want. Do you want a Piper?

Do you want a Bugler? Do you want a ColorGuard? Do you want fellow Marines as pallbearers?.

Someone needs to know because there iswork and planning involved…Write down thisinformation because your family will need it

ed that we did not

have a quorum for the

April Directors meeting

in April at Anaheim. We were able to con-

duct an Executive Board Meeting.

I strongly believe that the number of

Directors for a quorum should be reduced

from 35 to not more than 20. So many

Directors feel that it makes no difference if

they attend or not. Without a quorum, no

business can be conducted by the Directors.

The decisions then fall to the Executive

Committee.

According to the By Laws, the Directors

are the governing body of the FMDA. If you

are a Director, PLEASE attend the Reunion

in August, so you can vote on the issues that

will be before the Board of Directors.

When you accept a position as a Director,

attend the meetings. If you do not attend the

meetings, you should resign. Of course, there

are reasons that some cannot attend, such as

health problems. If you feel that you cannot

fulfill the duties of a Director, you should not

accept the position.

The Oct/Nov/Dec. issue of the OBN was

not the same as the “Blue Line Copy” that I

approved. In the published OBN, there was

a letter of censure by former President

Pendas on former FMDA Treasurer Mike

Sisk.

The letter of censure was dated 30 Aug,

2007. There was no reason for this letter of

censure to be printed except to stir up past

happenings.

I still have my Blue Line Copy of the

OBN. Furthermore, an FMDA President was

censured by the Board of Directors while the

said President was in office. This letter of

Censure was never published in the OBN.

The reunion at the Marriott Hotel in

Anaheim, California during the week of

August 24 to August 30 is going to be a good

one. There are many things to do. All the

meetings will be on the ground floor, with

easy access from the lobby.

We need a good turn out to make the

reunion a success. Make your reservations

early. The room rates are quite reasonable.

Plan on attending. I know that you will have

a great time.

Our financial situation is much better than

it was, but we still need your donations to the

General Fund. The Scholarship Fund is in

good shape, so please donate to the General

Fund. Donations are also needed to help pay

the cost of postage for the mailing of the Old

Breed News.

I hope to see you in Anaheim in August.

Queen Mary Tour


The day at the Queen Mary includes 2 separate experiences:

WORLD WAR II TOURThis tour gives the history of the Queen Mary as a troopship during

Fellow First Marine Division Association Member.

We need to see to it that every member of the First Marine DivisionAssociation (the Association) continues to get a copy of the OBN. UntilFebruary 2009, the OBN was being sent only to annual members plusLife members who paid $15 per year to get it.

That is not right.

In recent years the Association has had some difficult financial times.One of the largest Association expenses is the printing and mailing ofthe OBN. In an effort to reduce costs, the first step was to reduce thenumber of annual issues from 6 to 4. The second step was to stopsending a hard copy to all Life Members, unless they paid a $15/yrdonation. Only about one-third of the Life members made this donation.

Past President Pendas worked hard to get the Association back on astable financial footing. His work has been carried on by currentAssociation leadership. As a result of this, the Association is now mak-ing great strides toward financial recovery.

In December 2008, the Executive Committee approved a proposal todownsize the February 2009 issue of the OBN to the point where a mail-ing could be made to all annual and Life members at no additional cost.The number of pages was reduced to about 30 and all color was elim-inated. The Executive Committee, in April 2009, approved a motion tosend the next two issues of the OBN (downsized version) to all mem-bers.

Our basic problem is that we have about 3,300 Annual members pay-ing $30/yr, resulting in dues of $99,000 plus about 8,000 Life memberspaying nothing. The deficit has been made up by generous donations ofthe members and various fund raising activities (Blue Diamond Team,

50/50 raffles, etc). There is no money from any outside source, suchas a corporation or foundation.

We need your helpYour membership confirms your commitment to the FMDA and yourinterest in seeing it prosper. Please join positive, action-oriented mem-bers, who appreciate the OBN; by donating funds you will help to ensureits continued publication to all members. The OBN is important anddeserves your financial support because it:

• Serves as a central meeting place for all FMDA members;

• Informs members about important issues; and

• Encourages communication between the Association Headquartersand individual members, particularly those members not belonging to alocal Chapter. A majority of our members do not belong to a Chapter.

Your generous gift will help offset some of the cost of publishing theOBN.

Learn the Facts, and then support the OBN.

• Each issue of the OBN costs, including mailing, about $10,144.

• Life Members make up 8,427 of our total membership of about11,000, a majority.

• The goal is to raise enough funds to allow publication of the OBN 6times a year to all members (up from the current 4 times a year).

By Jimmy L. Clendennen“Put the application in their hand. That is the key.”

There are mainly two ways of recruiting new FMDA members

and forming new FMDA Chapters: by local community (city, region,

state), or by unit (company, battalion, detachment, squadron, or

group) and conflict (WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Cold War, Desert Storm,

Iraq or Afghanistan). Here are a couple tips on to recruit either way:

Tailor your approach by specific targeting of your potential recruit.

Always invite the prospective recruit to join both the 1st Marine

Division Association and Chapter (local or unit) together. If a Chapter

does not exist, invite the potential recruit to help create one by becom-

ing a Charter Member.

When 12 or more Charter Members are recruited, they may peti-

tion to become a Chartered Chapter of the 1st Marine Division

Association. If a Chapter already exists, invite the prospective recruit

to join the Chapter together with the Association.

Bear in mind that they must be FMDA Members in order to join

a Chapter. The best and easiest way to do this is to create a Chapter

Membership Application targeting the potential recruit (local or unit),

and hand it to them together with an FMDA Membership

Application. If they are already Association Members, invite join an

existing Chapter or become a Charter Member of a new Chapter.

With locality recruitment, target anyone in your city, region or

state who ever served with the 1st Marine Division. First, form an

address list of prospective recruits and begin mailing or handing out

membership applications, Association or Chapter, or both.

Look for prospective recruits in other veterans organizations or

search the internet for everyone who served with the 1st Marine

Division. Make use of membership directories, from the FMDA and

other organizations, such as the Marine Corps League, Marine Corps

Association, etc.

With unit recruitment, target anyone who served in a specific unit

(company, battalion, detachment, squadron, or group), in general, or

a specific conflict or war. Again, first form an address list of prospec-

tive recruits targeting everyone who served with a specific unit, in

general or a specific conflict or war, and begin mailing or handing out

membership applications, Association or Chapter, or both.

The point of unit chapters is to bring together in a representative

organization everyone who served together in a specific company,

battalion, detachment, squadron, or group, in general or in a specific

conflict or war. As with local recruitment, look for prospective

recruits in other veterans organizations or search the internet.

Make use of membership directories, from the FMDA and other

organizations, such as the Marine Corps League, Marine Corps

Association, etc. But, instead of searching by locality, search by the

specific unit that you are targeting for recruitment.

Look on the internet for other unit organizations, listed by conflict

or war, that also have reunions. They often have names and contact

information of unit veterans. Also, make use of unit diaries and per-

sonnel rosters available through the Marine Corps History Division

located at Quantico, Virginia.

Once you have potential recruits‘ complete names, do a search for

them using www.zaba.com, www.intelius.com, or a similar search

engine. You can narrow your search by calculating their approximate

age today, where they originated from, or other personal information

available on them.

In summary, the key to building the FMDA is to locate and invite

potential recruits to join the Association and (or) Chapter everyday.

Remember this: just as there are thousands of young people waiting

to be invited to enlist in the United States Marine Corps everyday,

there are thousands of veterans of the 1st Marine Division waiting to

be invited to join the FMDA and Chapter.

Put the application in their hand. That is the key.

FMDA Recruitment and the Formation of Chapters

Chapter Rep Meeting

April 5, 2009

A meeting room became available at the Anaheim Marriott Hoteland the Chapter Rep meeting was held from 1300 to 1500 hourswith approximately 26 directors attending.

The discussion began with an Excel summary report of the eightchapters that submitted their completed Chapter Representativereports. Forms were given to all Chapter Reps attending. They shouldbe completed and turned into Col. Hayes or Mike Carone one monthbefore the Reunion Annual Meeting so that a meaningful summarycan be created and discussed at the next Chapter Reps meeting.

A lively discussion of all attending members included the followingtopics:

1. Increasing dues for annual members by $10/year

2. Requesting each chapter to hold at least one event per year forfund raising for the financial shortfall of the Association’s GeneralFund.

3. Requesting that all members donate to the Association’s gener-al fund to defray the expense of the Old Breed News.

The conversation centered on producing a 31-33 page Old Breed

News, with distribution to all members of the Association for the nexttwo issues. The cost of producing the Old Breed News would beapproximately the same as that of the 60+ pages of the Old BreedNews to approximately 1/3 of the life members who paid the sub-scription fee.

The potential loss of $41,000 of the subscription fee by life mem-bers could be made up by items 1-3 above.

A vote was taken of all directors attending; a unanimous decisionwas passed to recommend to the Executive Committee to producethe 31-33 page black & white versions of 2009 issues 2 & 3 of theOld Breed News to all members.

Member requesting info about the Association’s financial picture.

Dr. Reames:

Thank you for your feedback and your concern about the financial healthof the Association and the related OBN subscription fee requested of LifeMembers to receive the OBN in the mail.

As you know, the OBN is available to all members and the public free ofcharge via the Association’s website. Presented below is a basic sum-mary of recurring revenue and recurring, fixed costs taken from theAssociation’s 2009 Budget.

We have a very small staff of three dedicated employees taking care ofthe Association’s business activities to keep the association compliantwith its stated purposes as defined in our forming documents and as filedwith the IRS. Additionally, the staff responds to the never-ending daily callsfrom many, many of the 11,000 Association members who have variedquestions and needs that they continually ask our staff to satisfy.

Also, as you know, one of our main tax-exempt purposes is to holdanniversaries and reunions. Those annual events require a tremendousamount of front-end preparatory and end-of-event follow-up effort andwork to execute a successful anniversary or reunion for the benefit of ourmembers.

Here is a basic summary taken from the Approved 2009 FMDA Budgetthat should help you understand the financial challenges that your leader-ship must deal with.

I did not factor in the potential income stream from reunions and anniver-saries because they are not predictable and we have incurred substantiallosses in the recent past. Without donations, Blue Diamond Programs,minor revenue derived from the Scholarship Fund for administrative costreimbursements, and such, we are bankrupt.

For discussion purposes, we have a basic $200,000.00/year cash short-fall that has to be made up with creative ideas for generating incremental

revenue. Until we become stronger financially, we must look to our mem-bership to help us survive.

The annual members pony up dues plus donations every year, while thelife members have paid a small fee for a “life membership” that assumesthat your Association set-aside the life member dues to pay for all futurelife member obligations such as publishing and distributing hard copies ofthe OBN until all life members pass away.

Unfortunately, your Association has been operated like the governmenthas run the Social Security system: i.e., Association-elected officers havetaken life member dues and have used them for past operating needs,thereby completely liquidating any life member reserve needed to fundfuture obligations.

When the membership complains about a lack of cash to fund life mem-ber obligations, they need look no farther than in their own mirrors,because they elected the officers and directors who allowed this to hap-pen. And, it was the membership and the Board of Directors who did nothold the elected officers accountable for fiscal mismanagement.

It is impossible to service life members’ expectations without any funds.Thus, it was determined that life members would be willing to supporttheir Association with a small, temporary OBN subscription fee to help theAssociation get through this difficult financial challenge. We were wrong:2/3 of our life members have paid no temporary OBN subscription fee toreceive a hard copy of the OBN via the U. S. Mail.

I can see from your communication that you are not happy about beingasked to help defray these OBN production & distribution costs, even tem-porarily. Thus, I will respectfully ask for you to provide some leadershipand send to your Executive Committee some viable suggestions regard-ing how we can generate enough incremental revenue to keep ourAssociation operating and financially healthy.

Your data on the OBN is misunderstood, as the annual cost runs approx-imately $44,000.00 to publish and distribute it. In 2008 we distributed theOBN via U. S. Mail to approximately 5,600 members (3,000 annual mem-bers and 2,600 subscribing life members). If one uses the total numberof recipients in the unit cost formula, the unit cost per OBN is$7.85/annum.

In developing the $15.00 subscription fee, your Association had no dataupon which to rely to determine how many life members would willinglysupport the Association during its time of need. Thus, the Associationleadership was sensitive to its life members and established a recom-mended temporary subscription fee that was neither financially burden-some nor so ridiculously low as to work our small staff to death pro-cessing and depositing thousands of small $5.00 checks.

Additionally, if you would like to lead/hold a fundraiser to help yourAssociation financially, it will be greatly appreciated. Leadership is difficult,and Marines do not shy away from leadership or challenges. Therefore, Iwill be looking forward to hearing that you have volunteered to take a lead-ership role in your Association (the Fundraising Committee needs aChairman).

Quests & Queries Sergeant Robert LeRoy Watson

I am writing a biography about my brother, Sergeant Robert

(“Bob”) LeRoy Watson, a combat cinematographer, who was killed

on Okinawa while attached to the Fourth Marines, Sixth Division. He

was photographing a Bailey bridge on the Asato River when he was

hit by Japanese mortar fire.

He participated in the Guam Recapture, landing with G Company,

Second Battalion, Twenty-Second Marines, First Provisional

Brigade.

Bob was attached to I Company Seventh Marines, First Division.

His assignment was to take pictures of communications in combat.

He was wounded after five or six days and sent to a hospital ship.

Eventually, he went to Pavuvu before rejoining the III AC photo sec-

tion on Guadalcanal in preparation for the Okinawa campaign.

If anyone remembers Bob and can tell me anything they remem-

ber about him, I would appreciate an e-mail, snail mail letter or a

phone call.

Gary Lee ReamI am looking for information about my brother, LCpl Gary Lee

Ream, who was KIA in Vietnam on 3 Nov 1966. His CO and I are

order for us to obtain a bronze star with “V” for his bravery.

I was in touch with a David Brooks, who wrote an email explain-

ing how Gary died that day. But, I have lost his emails and his address

is no longer valid. I have his statement, but I need to have it notarized

by him. I have one other person who served that day who needs to do

the same thing.

Gary was in Charlie Co., 1st Div., 1st Battalion. His CO was Capt.

My father was on the first wave that landed on Guadalcanal. He

was in the 1st Marine Division, 1st Bn., 1st Regt. I am seeking any-

one who may have known him during the Guadalcanal campaign

and/or may have served with him.

My Dad’s serial # was 369546. He entered the Marines at age 17

on 26 Jan. 1942; his date of separation was 4 May 1945. He was

wounded on Guadalcanal and eventually shipped to a hospital in

Oakland, CA to recover from his wounds.

After Dad recovered from his wounds he went on a war bond tour

with Olsen and Johnson. Eventually he was sent to Quantico, VA to

finish serving his time in the Marines. Dad was also asked to be an

advisor for the movie Guadalcanal Diaries.

Dad was born in the Bronx, NY on 31 March 1924. His basic

training was at Parris Island, after which he went to Quantico, VA for

Raider training.

Minutes of the Executive Committee Meeting conducted on 5 April 2009 at theAnaheim Marriott

President Frank Lindstrom called the meeting to order at 1600. The Pledge ofAllegiance was conducted and Monsignor Murphy provided a prayer. ExecutiveDirector Len Hayes conducted a Roll Call and announced that there was not aquorum to conduct a Directors Meeting. Present:

Vice President Carone moved and it was seconded that the Executive Committeebe convened. The motion passed with one nay.

Vice President Carone moved and it was seconded that “all of the Directors pres-ent can attend the Executive Committee Meeting.”

Former president Pendas posed a question from the floor: “Are we going to havea voice in the meeting?”

Vice President Carone answered “Of course.”

Discussion

Legal Officer Franklin stated that “I believe this was covered in an ExecutiveCommittee Conference Call of 5 March 2009. That all of the directors present notonly get to attend, but that they get to participate and they get to vote and if thevote is close we will call it an advisory vote because you don’t have a quorum.Everybody here has a voice, everybody participates.”

A follow up question from former president Pendas was: “Does that include vot-ing?’

Vice President Carone responded “Yes.”

Proof of notice of the meeting was included in the Old Breed News.

The minutes of latest Executive Committee Conference Calls are printed in the 1stQuarter 2009 issue of the Old Breed News.

It was moved and seconded that the minutes be accepted.

Motion passed

The Secretary asked if the Executive Committee was officially convened. ThePresident answered “Yes.”

The President stated that he had hoped to have a quorum and hoped everybodywould attend the reunion.

Vice President Carone submitted his Report.

The Treasurer’s Report was prepared by Treasurer Jerry Reed and submitted forthe record. Vice President Carone provided an oral review of the Treasurer’sReport.

Executive Director Len Hayes is acting as Secretary in the absence of an electedSecretary and will relinquish such duties after the election of a new AssociationSecretary at the August 2009 Reunion in Anaheim.

Membership Committee Chairman Bob Montgomery provided a report. He notedthat the association needs more minority members to replace the large number ofmembers that are being lost due to age. He recommended that the Associationstrongly recruit Unit Chapters. The President will request that Jimmy Clendennen

be asked to write a brief article for the next Old Breed News describing his suc-cess in forming new Chapters.

It was moved and seconded that the Executive Director place on the next agendadiscussion of changing the Bylaws to broaden the Associate Member/Friends ofthe Association Concept. The motion passed.

John Stevens provided a report for the Nominating Committee. He noted that wehave received approximately 300 ballots and we must identify Ballot Counters(Tellers) at this meeting. Dave Marshall and John Bastian volunteered from theWestern Region. Rex Lynch and Bob Palmer volunteered from the Central Region.Two volunteers are still needed from the Eastern Region.

The Finance Review Committee Report was submitted for the record and provid-ed to all attendees. Each attendee also received a copy of the 2008 Fiscal Report.

The Reunion Destination Committee Report was provided by Denny Weisgerber.The Committee has six Reunion Site possibilities under review and will providerecommendations at the August 2009 meeting.

John Stevens provided a report from the Ad Hoc Committee on FMDAOrganizational Structure. They have conducted three meetings and are seekingrecommendations from selected association members. They will provide a finalreport at the August Board Meeting.

The composition of the 2nd and 3rd Quarter 2009 Old Breed News was discussedby the Executive Committee and the Chapter Representatives. Based on the unan-imous recommendation of the Chapter Representatives, it was moved and sec-onded that the 2nd and 3rd Quarter Old Breed News issues be limited to no morethan 34 pages, Black and White, and distributed to all association members.

The Chapter Representatives were polled

John Stevens volunteered to write a plea to Life Members to support the GeneralFund. The motion passed.

The Executive Committee reiterated that the Blue Diamond Founder Pins are lim-ited to a total of 100. They authorized the Executive Director to negotiate the pro-duction of 100 new pins called “Blue Diamond Team Member.”

Jerry Johs presented the Anaheim Reunion Brief. He briefed attendees on theElectronic Reunion News Letter that has been provided to association membersand encouraged Early Registration to benefit from a cost saving incentive offeredfor the reunion. The April Reunion News Letter will be sent to members by 8 April2009. Doc Lakernick congratulated Jerry Johs and Denny Weisgerber on a “Jobwell done” in organizing the Anaheim Reunion.

Gratitude in Motion Executive Director Mike Kerr briefed attendees on the progressof The Honor Run. This is the first of a three-year fund raising effort to raise moneyfor the FMDA Scholarship Fund and the Fisher Foundation.

The Executive Committee reviewed the Legal Officers Letter of Admonition to anAssociation member who exhibited unacceptable behavior at the recent DivisionAnniversary.

Monsignor Murphy offered a closing prayer.

There being no further business to discuss, the Executive Committee adjournedat 1800.

Afew years ago the popular late colum-

nist Art Buchwald (1925-2007) wrote

a memoir about his life, Leaving Home.Buchwald served in the USMC from 1942

to 1945 in the South Pacific.

Years after World War II he attended a

reunion and there met his former Sergeant,

Sullivan by name. They exchanged memo-

ries and stories about the Corps, as all

Marines do. Sullivan reminded Buchwald

that “He had the ability to screw up a two-

man funeral, and that anything he touched

ceased to function! “That’s a great re -

minder for positive reinforcement.

Buchwald asked Sullivan why he

thought we were all so close still and had

such warm feelings for one another. His old

Sergeant replied, “Because we compressed

a lifetime into a few years and we experi-

enced things together that no one else will

ever share. Today they call it bonding.

Some people might call it love.”

Corinthians Chapterl3, Verse 13? “So faith,

hope, love remain, these three; but the

greatest of these is love.” By the way, Art

Buchwald was brought up as an orphan. He

says in Leaving Home, “I ‘can now say

without hes itation the Marine Corps was

the best foster home I ever had.”

This brings me to a few thoughts about

Brotherhood, the Marine Corps ‘gene’ that

infuses all of us. Remember the story in the

Book of Genesis, Chapter 45, when Joseph

met his brothers after many years? He said

simply, “I am your brother, Joseph.”

Brotherhood can run deeper than even the

blood line.

In William Shakespeare’s play, King

Henry V, Act IV, Scene III, the bard has

King Henry speaking the following immor-

tal words:

We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;For he today that sheds his blood with me Shall be my brother; be he ne’er so vile,This day shall gentle his condition:And gentlemen in England now a-bedShall think themselves accursed they were nothere, And hold their manhoods cheap whiles anyspeaksThat fought with us upon Saint Crispin’s day.

So the bard is on board about

Brotherhood. On the MLR, on any battle-

field, Brotherhood is a key to survival.

The ‘gene’ of Brotherhood is infused on

the drill fields of MCRD Parris Island/San

Diego, beginning with close-order drill and

more close-order drill. If just one recruit is

out of step, the whole platoon is out of step.

If one recruit’s bunk and locker-box is

screwed up, the whole squad bay is

screwed up.

So, Brotherhood begins with the bond-

ing that Art Buchwald’s old Sergeant talks

about. Hopefully the raw material of

Brotherhood is nurtured well back in early

life—hopefully

Joker One, by LT Donovan Campbell, is

a fine read of First Platoon, Golf Company,

Second Battalion, Fourth Marines before

and during their tour of duty in Ramadi,

Anbar Province, Iraq in 2004. It describes

in bold relief the celebrated character of

Brotherhood—down, up, and across—that

permeated the ranks of Joker One, from the

C.O. of First Platoon, LT Donovan

Campbell through the ranks. Joker was the

call sign of Golf Company.

In the March 2009 issue of

Proceedinqs, U.S. Naval Institute, James

A. Baker III, a long-time public servant

who served both President Ronald Reagan

and President George H. W. Bush as White

House Chief of Staff, Secretary of the

Treasury under Pres. Reagan, and

Secretary of State under Pres. George

H.W. Bush, and recently as Co-Chair of

the Iraq Study Group, had this to say about

his time in the Corps: “Nothing defines

Marines as much as their ability to work

together as a cohe sive unit. If excellence is

the goal of every Marine—and it is—then

teamwork is the way it is attained.”

We can add that teamwork leads right

into Brotherhood. I might add that James

Baker also says in his’ article that, “Today,

more than 50 years after I last wore the

Corps uniform, I remain a Marine. And I

always will be a Marine.”

The Brotherhood of the Marine Corps

perdures for life. The examples of this

read like a litany. The First Marine

Division Association and other Division

Associations Reunions, Regiment

Reunions, Battalion Reunions, Company

Reunions, Tankers, Korea,

Vietnam, MOS, WWII, China, Frozen

Chosen, MCL Reunions…on and on.

When you’re driving and you see a

Marine Corps flag flying on a lawn or in

front of a business, Brotherhood shouts,

“Oorah.”

What impels a Marine to throw himself

on a live grenade and suffer the blast that

might take his life or limb to save the life

or limb of a Brother Warrior? It’s

Brotherhood. It’s Esprit de Corps.

“Greater love has no man than this: that

a man lay down his life for his friends.”

John 15:13.

The first helicopter landingsHere is further comment regarding the first helicopter land-

ings as addressed in the last two issues of OBN.

In August 1951, I joined the 11th Marines as a forward

observer. On September 20, 1951, my FO team was assigned to

an area called Field X-83 that was about 14 miles southwest of

Hill 884. We were attached to the Recon Company.

On September 21, 1951, we boarded the helicopters to be

transported to Hill 884. This first use of helicopters for combat

troop movement was called Operation “Summit.“

At that time helicopter lifts were still in the theoretical stage,

and no such operations had ever been undertaken. There were

many correspondents at Field X-83 to witness and report this his-

torical event to stateside newspapers.

The landing area, which was cleared by the 1st Shore Party

Battalion, was small, with sheer drops on two sides.

Major General Gerald C. Thomas, commanding general of the

1st Marine Division, later stated that Operation “Summit,” the

“first” helicopter-borne landing of a combat unit in military his-

tory, was an outstanding success.

I am proud that I was able to participate in this history mak-

ing “first” of the Marine Corps.

BODFISH [CA]Bodfish Campout 2009

This year’s Bodfish Campout was held on Presidents Weekend,

February 13-15, at the world famous Camp Hamilton in Bakersfield.

Camp Hamilton is the creation of retired MGySgt Glen Denton, who

purchased the ten-acre property in 1978, established it as a veterans

memorial park, and named it in memory of former Marine, China

hand and WWII veteran Leonard Hamilton.

Many beautiful memorial trees have been planted on the grounds,

each with a plaque naming the veteran for whom the tree is dedicat-

ed. Plaques range from WWI, II, Korea, peacetime, Vietnam, Desert

Storm, Iraq, Afghanistan, and more.

Some 140 “Bodfishers” and wives were in attendance at the cam-

pout, and a great time was had by all. The Horse Marines out of

Barstow were on hand. Under the leadership of GySgt Pete

McConnell, they performed morning and evening colors on what

were formerly wild horses rounded up by the Bureau of Land

Management and trained by the Marines.

Activities during the campout included: a grand Basque feed at

Noriega’s in Bakersfield; a trip laid on by Glen Denton to the town of

Bodfish, where Bodfish Bales once roamed the surrounding hills

with his burro Elmira in search of the Lost Dutchman Mine; evening

songs performed by ‘Squidley and the Hormones’; unsupervised

grenade throwing by Bob Barron; a short-arm inspection by Myrl

Wallace; a “Survive your own cooking” class by Max Felser; skeet

shooting and tree-hugging by Paul Feickert, needle-point by Norm

Kellems, bellybutton contemplation by the Kinsley brothers, and a

hanging in effigy of the Cantil Kid and his side-kick Nape Napier for

not showing up.

Saturday, at 1000, the old Bodfish officers were thrown out and

the new thrown in. They are:

It was a relatively peaceful transition. with a minimum of fisticuffs

and shoving involved.

The annual auction began promptly at 1300. As a result, over

$500.00 was sent to national for the scholarship and general fund.

Gourmet chow this year was provided by Mark Marquez, Tony

Espinosa, Esther Denton, Deidre Watters, MS3 Brandon Stallworth,

and Ray Moreno. The fifty-fifty raffle tickets were sold by Bob

Hanna and Bill Maker, who haven’t been seen after Saturday night’s

take of $18,000.00...

Hats off to the Hamilton groundskeeper actual, Gary Towery, who

was of great assistance in preparation and maintenance; Joe Martinez,

who swings a mean plumber’s wrench; Squidley, for arriving early

and setting up the Bodfish cranberry juice and tea bar; Dale Turner,

for putting in such a great organizational effort; the Bodfish Bevy of

Beauties for adding the much needed feminine touch to an otherwise

simian gathering; and to all those other stalwarts who braved the rain,

sleet, snow and blistering sunshine to make this another outstanding

Bodfish Campout.

SOUTHERN ARIZONA [AZ] The Chapter, in conjunction with the Tucson Marine Corps

League Detachment 007, presented its annual public memorial serv-

ice in remembrance to the 19 Marines who died in the 8 April 2000

Osprey crash. Fourteen Marines who perished were members of the

3rd Battalion, 5th Marines, Camp Pendleton, CA. The remaining 4

were the crew members.

The Osprey MV-22 tilt-rotor aircraft from the Marine Corps Air

Station, Yuma crashed at the City of Marana, AZ - Marana Northwest

Regional Airport during an evening training mission. The airport is

located approximately 10 miles northwest of Tucson.

The 12 April memorial, which was well attended by the public,

included several close relatives of some of the men lost. Guest speak-

A sincere thanks to the Osprey Memorial event co-chairmen,

Mike Flynn of the Tucson MCL Detachment 007 and Art Jackson,

1st Mar. Div. Assoc. Southern Arizona Chapter. The memorial event

will continue, “Lest We Forget.“

Members of the Southern Arizona Chapter have been active in

several important events. The Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund public

contribution event was held in front of a sponsoring Tucson public

bookstore. The public generously contributed to the fund and the pro-

ceeds were sent to Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund in Oceanside, CA.

CHICAGO [IL]“Forgotten War Dinner”

With 160 people attending, this was the largest event the Chicago

Area Chapter has ever had. Marines from two nations participated, as

we were heavily supported by the Korean community and Republic

of Korea Marines from two separate organizations.

The Consulate General of Korea, Sung Hwan Son, spoke and

thanked the 1st Marine Division for coming to his country’s aid dur-

ing their time of peril. The Korean Nurses Association of Chicago

provided old traditional Korean singing and dancing, which was

delightful.

Bob Arron related the saga of the “Fire Brigade’ 5th Marines, 1st

Provisional Brigade, and added historical comments. The speakers

used maps and photographs to indicate positions of some of the epic

battles that they participated in. The audience was very attentive.

Mike Roche, Chapter President, presented “PRESIDENT

AWARDS” to Vic Kay, chapter Treasurer, and Chuck Bryers,

Chapter Sgt. at Arms, for their faithful and unselfish service to the

chapter. Vic earned his award for his detail and management of the

finances of the chapter and his involvement in all areas of chapter

activity. Chuck earned his for his leadership of the “Bull Dog Open”

golf outing for the past seventeen years, as well as his involvement in

chapter affairs.

Bob Arron, chapter Vice President, presented “MARINE OF THE

YEAR AWARDS” to Maj. Blaine Vorgang and MgySgt Robert

Arvin, “For outstanding performance in providing dedicated inspira-

tion, understanding and leadership in military education and disci-

pline to the many fine young men and women that participate in the

Romeoville High School Marine Corps JROTC program.”

The purpose of the dinner was to raise funds for the Scholarship

Fund through the publication of an ad book in conjunction with the

event. Seven FMDA chapters supported this effort. They included the

California Delta, Golden Gate, Oregon Columbia River, Liberty Bell,

Colorado River, St. Louis, and Wisconsin chapters.

Their combined support was tripled by the Chicago Area Chapter,

for an immediate partial payment’ of $3,000.00 to the fund. In addi-

tion to the FMDA chapters, the event was supported by Marine Corps

League Detachments and other military organizations. It is now sug-

gested that the balance of the funds raised at this event be applied to

the General Fund.

The planning committee consisted of Bob Arron - Event

I am one of the Associate Directors for the Marine Corps

Engineer Association (www.marcorengasn.org). I need your help.

I am writing a history of the 7th Separate Bulk Fuel Company,

which served in Vietnam from 29 Dec. 1966 until March 1970. My

approach has been to use those Bulk Fuelers’ statements and stories

about the time they spent with this unit.

Currently, I am finishing March and April 1968. But, I do not

have any more testimony until I arrived there in April of 1969. I

would appreciate it if you could pass the word on this, as it will help

boring information take on a new life.

I’m an Air Force officer who has a 1st Marine Division veteran

in my family. My wife had an uncle named PFC James Elmer

Beville, who was a member of H-3-1, 1st Marine Division. He was

killed on 29 November 1950 at Chosin Reservoir.

As I write this, his Purple Heart and the signed letter of condo-

lence from Gen Douglas MacArthur sit not five feet from me.

Thank you to anyone who might have ANYTHING, no matter

how small it might seem, to share about my wife’s uncle or the bat-

tle in which he fought.

God Bless you all for your service and for remembering those

brave and blessed souls who gave their lives to defend our freedom.
