Old Man On A BalconyViews Of Monterey Bay~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~HaikuDogen saw thousandsof miracles each morningI see a dozenThe number of birds--And of different bird songs--Midwinter MozartMinor Mystery Southern Pacifictrain goes by an hour beforeits usual timeBrother Raven, youain't no song-bird. You wusserthan the kiss of deathFractal Miracle The lines of the beach,the bay and the lowest cloudAll seem parallel!Two For Bishop Berkeley Clouds (visible) floatabove hills (invisible);Are the hills still thereAt this hour of nightI see more dolphins than atAny other time.Biggest damned ravenI ever saw flies howlingcaw caw caw Lord LordA moon in the skyAfter sunrise [a rare sight];Seen it before, but --A squiggly fractal--the line of Monterrey's hills--floats above the fogThe cat licks its pawsI watch, three floors above itLooks up straight at meGay flamingo singsThe sun rises and the worldIs ablaze with DawnWeep, weep! cries a birdLost somewhere in fog and mist.Sunrise with no sun.Fire on the mountainNo, the deer are still, tranquilIt must be sunlightThe orange cloudbankOne bright touch in the grey skyAbove a grey bayDolphins in the bayPlaying, sporting, having fun--World without money!The weather bureau predicted a sunny dayAll I see is fogAfter the fog lifts,A naked beauty blue skyWith buttermilk cloudsBay ablaze with light--Tin-flash; silver; clear as gin--After weeks of fog!Flock of gulls appearsAnd suddenly -- disappearsGoing God-knows-where...White on white bay lost,Mountains lost, bleached into whiteA clean-cotton mistPre-dawn, silence, then --Out of unpulsating darkAn unknown bird chirps.Bay like blackboard greyMonterrey lost in white fogShortest day draws nighWhile I slept they cameTwo unexpected flowersSprouting on the vine.Grey and pastel pink --A water-color painting --This light before dawn.Midnight Haiku Mottled blueblack sky.A sudden moon -- briefly! Oot!Birds unseen, bickering --Sweep --Above, on the roof.I see just one treeThe bay is invisibleFog, fog, endless fogSome waves cry Terror!Hitting the beach like bouldersDark night darker thoughts.Botticelli skyNo fog, no Chinese touches--A Rennaisance dayAll is cloaked in fogThe world seems empty, until --Far off, a gull shrieks.Federal Crime Clear blue bay at sunsetAnd I am stoned and placid--Free of grief, almost.New bud on the vineBut three thousand miles due EastWall Street still smoulders. Calm and quiet hereNo anthrax or mad bombers...Yet. But tomorrowESCAPE FROM CNN:No fakes or deceitsBay, clouds, birds, trees AllDoing what they do.
