As part of Wellness, Yankun Li, Assistant Director of FM Fiscal Operations and FM HR Partner, Tim Sullivan, participated in the summer volleyball league with several staff from other OSU departments. The team was known as the “Wilson”. The league concluded with a volleyball tournament in which the “Wilson” team was crowned champions. The trophy was designed and made by a previous FM employee, Dave Brown. FM donated the trophy to the Department of Wellness so it will be awarded to the championship team of each faculty/staff tournament.

FM personnel supported Residential Life with “Student Move-in” prior to the beginning of OSU’s Fall Semester. Serving as Cowboy Carriers, staff assisted students, siblings, and parents in a variety of ways

including carrying belongings into dorm rooms, holding doors for inbound items, and operating the elevators to minimize elevator outages that occur by overloading or prolonged door opening. Cowboy Carrier participants also provided directions to students who need to locate other campus buildings such as the Multi-modal Transportation Terminal to purchase parking passes and the Student Union for book purchases.

FM Focus on Workplace Safety

In June, FM introduced Larry Secrest to the FM organization as the Coordinator of FM Programs with a main emphasis on workplace safety. Larry will collaborate closely with the OSU Environmental Health and Safety department to bring additional focus to safety in the FM workplace and provide an on-sight resource for employees. Larry has an extensive safety background having worked as a safety manager for local industrial corporations for many years.

When asked what is most important in workplace safety, Larry replied:

“When people talk about the most important part of a safety program, you’ll probably hear references to things like management commitment, worker participation, training, communication, hazard identification and hazard prevention. All of those elements are very important to the foundational success of a program but to me the most important part is to have a culture where safety is a value within the organization and not just a priority. A safety culture is the glue that holds those other elements together and makes them successful. When we value safety, we understand that every one of us has a responsibility in keeping our co-workers safe and ourselves. I always tell people, “No one can protect you, like you”. First be concerned about your own safety then make sure your co-workers are safe also. In any successful safety program you’ve heard of or read about, you’ll always find employees that care about their own safety and work together as a team to care about one another and keep each other safe.”

Orange Power

Gretchen Pitts of Morrison created a sugar cookie design celebrating OSU Orange Power and Energy Services Central Plant. She sent the cookie to work with her husband, David. It was almost too beautiful to eat - but we ate it anyway and it was delicious! We were so impressed with her talent that we decided to share it here and on the Energy Services website. Something’s Fishy!

FM personnel are called out to find resolutions for a wide variety of issues throughout the OSU campus. Products are often required to fully resolve the situation. Enter the FM Procurement Services Department which works diligently to ensure FM personnel have products necessary to resolve issues in a timely manner. One of the most unusual purchases was 100 cans of sardines for FM Pest Control. After 3 supermarket visits, sardines were located and brought to Pest Control personnel for phase 2 problem resolution! Tiffany Munday has been awarded a $1,000 staff scholarship for the 2018-2019 academic Year. The Staff Advisory Council Endowed Scholarship was established to assist staff members as they continue their higher education. A special committee of SAC members reviews the

scholarship applications and ranks them based on composite score of grades, steady progress toward degree, financial need, etc. For more information, visit https://sac.okstate.edu/scholarships.html

Tiffany is a Business Sustainability major with an anticipated graduation date of December 2019. She hopes to use her degree to focus on improving the 3 Ps: People, Planet and Processes. “As a non-traditional student, I recognize what a benefit is it to have the support of Facilities Management as I pursue my degree. I feel honored to be a part of the OSU family, both as a student and an employee.”

The “Strike Zone”

Over the last few weeks, the Business Operations Procurement Warehouse has been moving many of the heavier parts that were over the shoulder and below the knees, to the “strike zone”. This was a safety initiative that makes it safer for employees to lift by reducing the chance of injury to the arms and back. Additionally, the heavier parts have been moved from under the racks allowing easier access.

OSU Mailing Services Designated as a Passport Application Acceptance Facility

The U.S. Department of State authorizes Oklahoma State University Mailing Services (UMS) as a passport acceptance facility. UMS can accept and verify documents, signatures and identity for passport applications.

The passport acceptance facility is available to students, faculty and staff on campus but also to the entire Oklahoma community.

Customers now have an option twice a week to come in until 7:30 p.m. The longer hours of operation on Tuesdays and Thursdays make the on-campus acceptance facility unique. It will assist customers that cannot get to the post office during work hours to submit passport documents. Having an on-site passport acceptance location with the ability to offer certified mailing services will add customer convenience.

UMS is located at 120 Agriculture North on OSU campus. Customer parking is available.

For additional information, please visit ums.okstate.edu or contact UMS at 405-744-7637.

Move-in Recycling Captures Tons of Cardboard

Thousands of students, many of them freshmen, move into the residential halls during Move-in Week. Some residents are now moving with reusable tubs and suitcases, but many still bring a lot of cardboard boxes to campus. The data are in for this year’s cardboard collection: 20.9 tons were captured for recycling! This cardboard will be processed into new boxes and other paper products instead of going into the landfill.

Kudos to the 70 student volunteers who helped their fellow residents and parents separate cardboard from trash during Move-In. A big thanks also to the six Sustainability student interns who supervised the volunteers! Special thanks to FM Recycling Dept. employees, P.J.Kyle and David Spencer, who were both a tremendous help during the busiest times.

The Move-in Recycling Program is a collaboration among these OSU Departments and units: Sustainability, Housing & Res Life, Residential Life Assn, FM Construction & Contract Services, FM Recycling and Heavy Equipment.

FM Involved with Oklahoma Recycling

Over 100 participants attended the 2018 Oklahoma Recycling Conference, which attracts solid waste management professionals, municipalities, tribal nations, community leaders, educators and students from around the state.

The one-day conference and expo returned to the OSU Alumni Center on September 20 and was supported by FM Facilities Management on several levels. FM’s Daniel Alexander, Justin Bracken, and Mark Perz, with Moves & Recycling, and Joanna Price with Construction & Contract Services, attended the event, along with 5 student interns. As a Ruby Level Sponsor, FM received four registrations and a chance to have a recycling video made by professional Tom Mills with GreenShortz Media.

Furthermore, the conference planning committee chair was OSU Sustainability Coordinator, Ilda Hershey, who has served on the board of the Oklahoma Recycling Association (OKRA) since 2008. “I’ve planned this conference in several locations around the state, but I really enjoy when it rotates back to Stillwater.” The OSU Recycling Center was even featured as a post-conference tour, led by Justin Bracken and student Kristen Ball.

Those who attended from OSU said they learned a lot from the morning speakers about the business of recycling in Oklahoma and beyond and meeting other recyclers during the afternoon roundtable sessions. Many case studies were shared, including how to reduce contamination in the recycling stream, use of better signage and how to create meaningful messages, like short videos. “I was very pleased with the educational content of the day, but also with the sharing and networking,” said Ilda. “I especially loved the OSU Recycles video sneak preview at the end of the conference. We had just shot it the day before!”

Landscape Services Creates area for new sculpture Landscape Services employees created an area for a new sculpture received as a gift from Terri Cooper of Oklahoma City. Ms. Cooper gifted three pieces to the OSU campus. In addition to the one placed here at FM, there will be one in the Native Corridor and one at the OSU Health Services Bldg.

The one at FM is a steel piece called “Modius Strip” sculpted by artist J. Don Cook also from Oklahoma City.

2018 Ok Corral Supplier Roundup

Each year OSU hosts an exciting day where you can meet the contracted suppliers of OSU and the A&M System. This year FM Procurement Services employees got to snap a picture with Pistol Pete while at the event. Customer Satisfaction Doesn’t Just Happen, It is Because of Great FM Employees!

FM Sign Shop

Good Afternoon John Heusel,

I wanted to let you know how much Parking Services appreciates the help from your department – it’s departments like yours that makes the university a better place to work!

I also want to express how much I appreciate Davis Saunders – I know he receives work orders from all over campus but he always makes us feel like we are his most important customer and I am sure he does the same with other departments – to me that is great customer service.

I really appreciate his hard work and his dedication to the university. I know he goes up and beyond – caring about each project he is given and that means a lot especially when we have short notice requests and that seems to happen a lot.

Last week for instance we needed the signs up in Lot 10 – as you know it was pouring down rain. I offered him a rain coat to borrow and he accepted and got the work completed so guests to the university would not see a lot of A-frames in the large donor parking lot on game day.
