MATCH NOTES

FRESH FACES

Head coach Chris Young announced the arrival of two new Cowgirls to the OSU women's tennis roster on Wednesday. Senior Megan McCray and freshman Shir Hornung will join the Pokes beginning with the 2018 spring season. Oklahoma State fans will remember Megan McCray from her freshman season with the Cowgirls in 2014. The Oceanside, Calif., native went 23-13 in singles competing primarily in the No. 2 spot for the Pokes that season, helping guide OSU to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. An All-Big 12 selection, McCray became the 10th Cowglrl freshman to reach the 20-win mark in the Big 12 era. Shir Hornung comes to Stillwater from Tel Aviv, Israel and will open the 2018 spring season as a freshman. She is currently ranked No. 9 overall by Universal Tennis.

DOMINANCE CENTRAL

Over the last several seasons, Oklahoma State has started a trend of dominance at the ITA Central Region Championships. This year was no different, as the team swept the event with Vladica BabictakingthesinglestitleandteamingupwithSofiaBlancototake the crown in doubles as well. Since 2013, between singles and doubles, the Cowgirls have had eight winners at the regional tournament with many more singles players and doubles teams advancing deep into each draw. All of this coming despite the program not having won a title at the event in years prior. The Cowgirls have swept the event three times (2014, 2015 and 2017). Babic and Viktoriya Lushkova (2014) are the only players in school history to take both singles and doubles titles in the same year.

CARTER TAKES ASSISTANT COACH POST

Oklahoma State's women's tennis team will bring on former North Carolina standout Hayley Carter as assistant coach, head coach Chris Young announced on Thursday. The most decorated player in North Carolina women's tennis history, Carter comes to Stillwater just months after wrapping up a wildly successful collegiate career in which she racked up an ACC record168singlesvictoriestogoalongwithfourfirst-teamAll-ACCselections, two ACC Championship Most Valuable Player selec-tions, and seven All-America honors—four in singles and three in doubles. The two-time ACC Player of the Year is no stranger to team success at the collegiate level either, as she guided the Tar Heels to a four-year record of 123-14, four regular-season ACC titles, two ACC Tournament championships, three NCAA Tournament top-eightfinishes,andthe2015ITAIndoornationalchampionship. The former Tar Heel picked up no shortage of awards for her effortsintheclassroomeither,asCarterwasafirst-teamAcademicAll-America and ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2016 and 2017 and earned induction into Phi Beta Kappa. Carter was also the only women's tennis player to be named the ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, ACC Player of the Year and ACC Tournament MVP in consecutive seasons.

COWGIRLS GO INTERNATIONAL

The 2017 Oklahoma State women's tennis roster includes a varietyofinternationalflavors, withathleteshailingfromsixdifferentcountries and three different continents. The Cowgirl roster boasts players from Montenegro, Argentina, Spain, Slovakia, Israel and the United States.

OSU TO HOST NCAA TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center will host the NCAA Tennis Championships in 2020, as announced by the NCAA last spring. The event is scheduled for May 14-23, 2020. TheGreenwoodTennisCenterwasunveiledinJanuary2014withtheindoorportionofthecomplexhostingitsfirstvarsitymatches. The facility's twelve outdoor courts were opened later that year. After a tour of the Greenwood Tennis Center, a tweet by the United States Tennis Association pronounced OSU's new complex as one of the top two collegiate facilities in the country. The organi-zation later recognized the Greenwood Center at the 2016 United States Tennis Association Outstanding Facility Awards. It was the only collegiate facility to receive the honor for 2016. Since its dedication, the Greenwood Tennis Center has hosted the 2016 Big 12 Championships, the 2014 ITA Women’s Central Region Championships and the 2016 Men’s ITA Central Region Championships. Last fall, the facility hosted the inaugural USTA StillwaterProTennisClassic, whichwasthefirstUSTAProCircuitevent to be held in the state of Oklahoma in over a decade. Both the OSU men’s and women’s tennis programs are trending upward under the leadership of Udwadia and Young since the opening of the state-of-the-art facility. Currently ranked No. 16 in the country, the Cowgirls have advanced to three-straight NCAA Sweet16’s,makingtheirfirst-everappearanceinthenationalchampionship match in 2016. Meanwhile, the Cowboys enter the season ranked No. 15 after a 22-7 campaign last season.

"I thought Wyoming came out and played great in doubles," head coach Chris Young said. "They were very aggressive and gave us a good test. I was disappointed in the way we managed those matches, but I was really impressed with how we came out in singles afterwards. In doubles, I thought we took too many risks and didn't put ourselves in the right spots, and then in singles we did the opposite. We came out and we managed our matches better." After dropping the doubles point and a couple of matches in the back end of their lineup, the Cowgirls looked toward their top four players and a rowdy crowd to lift them to the win and keep them perfect on the season. "I thought that coming into the match, our strength was the top of our singles lineup," head coach Chris Young said." I thought Arizona State was really strong in doubles and the bottom of the lineup. It turned out that way. I'd take those girls out there all day. The thing I'm most proud of is that I knew our girls were going to compete and give it all until the end. You can't be nervous about that. You just have to lay it all on the line and see what happens." "The crowd is huge," Young said. "You don't win like we have at home without having the crowd that we had. When you get a match like this, you need to step up and deliver. As a coach, you try and create these moments. We had a good crowd tonight and a lot of things in place. "The way you continue to move forward as a program is you capitalize on these moments. It didn't look good there for a period of time. We were saying prayers and asking for a miracle, and we got Megan. I feel blessed to coach these girls because they work so hard. I think the reason people enjoy watch-ing them play is how hard they compete." I think you see that with every match…Today, we too all of our chances and were very aggressive." "It was nice," Young said. "A team like Miami is so tough. Every point is really important. She is limited on her resources when she goes home on Christmas break, but she did a lot better of a job this year of maintaining her level. OKLAHOMA NO. 44 0

NORMAN, Okla. – The 13th-ranked Oklahoma State women's tennis team won its sixth-straight Bedlam contest on Saturday afternoon, sweeping No. 44 Oklahoma, 4-0, at the Headington Family Tennis Center. With the win, OSU pushed its all-time series record against the Sooners to 38-19. The Cowgirls (14-2, 4-1 Big 12) were simply too much for the Sooners to handle on Saturday, not dropping a set in singles or doubles on the way to their fourth sweep of the season. "I thought today was great," head coach Chris Young said. "Anytime you can play against your rival and not lose a set in singles or doubles, it says a lot about the girls' focus. This team competes so hard and when it comes down to it,thegirlsareveryconfidentinwhatthey'reabletodo.Theyjustcompetesowell and they make it tough to win points against them. "I was really proud of the mindset. The girls came in here with the expecta-tion to not only win, but to win convincingly and I thought we did that." Although the match was in Norman, the victory came in front of a largely orange contingent. "I want to give credit to our fans for coming down here, taking over here today and giving us what we're used to at home," Young said. "Our fans are great and that's a big advantage we have here at Oklahoma State." "The key about this team is how hard they compete," head coach Chris Young said. "We haven't been a great doubles team, which has put us in a tough spot in singles but the doubles point is just one point. Although it can be a big point, it's just a matter of perspective and we haven't looked at the doubles point as being as crucial. We know that even if we lose the doubles point,it'shardforteamstofindthreesingleswinsthroughoutourlineup.Energy is what we pride ourselves on and if we can't bring that, we're not going to be successful. After Tulsa stretched its lead to 2-0 with a straight-set win on court six, Babic got the Cowgirls on the board with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over No. 73 Ksenia Laskutova. A winner of six of her last eight matches, Babic is now 9-6 against ranked opponents and 22-6 overall on the season. Marina Guinart remained perfect in dual play with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Martha Matoula on court four to tie the match at two apiece. Guinart is 11-0 since the start of the spring dual season, winning 12-straight matches dating back to the fall. Megan McCray won her eighth consecutive match in a 6-3, 6-4 triumph over No. 101 Martina Okalova at No. 2 to give the Cowgirls the lead for good and put OSU a point away from the clincher. OKLAHOMA STATE NO. 11 4

STILLWATER – The 11th-ranked Oklahoma State women's tennis team won its fourth-straight match Friday evening at the Greenwood Tennis Center, dropping conference foe TCU in a 4-3 thriller. "We knew the doubles point was going to be important," head coach Chris Young said. "I told people all week that this was going to be a tough match…There are so many good teams in this league, and TCU is well-deserving of be-ing a tournament team. They're right on the bubble of that. They challenged us, but the top three came through (in singles). I'd put the top of our lineup against anybody." The Cowgirls (16-2, 5-1 Big 12) opened the match by taking the doubles point with wins in the top two doubles spots. After TCU tallied a 6-2 decision on court three, the Pokes responded with a 6-2 victory from Vladica Babic and SofiaBlancooncourtone.ItmarkedtheOSUtandem'seighth-straightwinandpushed their record this season to 22-7. Marina Guinart and Katarina Stresnakova clinched the point for the Cowgirls with a 6-4 win over Marie Norris and Elizabeth Tedford on court two. It was their 10th dual triumph of the season and third in the last four matches. In singles, it went down to the wire as the Horned Frogs tallied wins on three courts; however, the Cowgirls were able to battle through a strong performance from TCU and pick up three wins of their own on the way to clinching their fourth-straight win. After TCU got on the board with a win over Saralyn Dyer at No. 6, Katarina Stresnakova put the Cowgirls back in the driver's seat as she dropped No. 92 Aleksandra Zenovska in straight sets on court three. It was the junior's 13th win in 14 matches this spring, pushing her team-leading overall win total to 24. Babic stretched the OSU lead to 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-4 tally over Aleksa Cveti-canin in the top singles position. Babic is 11-3 in dual action for her senior year and 23-6 overall, winning four-straight matches and seven of her last eight. TCU would even the score at three apiece shortly after, scoring wins over GuinartandBlancooncourtsfourandfive,respectively.Guinart'slosswasherfirstofthespringcampaign. "For Marina to go this long in the season without losing (is impressive)," Young said. "The good news is we won without some of the points we typically get and she is one of those." "A couple of us didn't get off to good starts or play as well as we normally do today," McCray said. "Coach was telling me how good I play when I get my energy up, so I was jumping up and down and (energizing myself) so I could get the win, and I did that. That always works for me." "The great thing about Megan is that she has grown so much in our program," Young said. "When she was here before a lot of people would lift the ball against her and hit heavy balls and she would kind of panic. Now she's staying steady and seeing that kind of game style now all semester. I'm really proud of her for that. "It wasn't our best performance today, but it was just another example of our teamjustfindingawaytowin."
