ABOUT THE COWGIRLS

The Cowgirls enter the 2018-19 season coming off another successful season in which they advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and finished second in the Big 12 Conference behind Texas Tech. OSU returns three players from the 2018 campaign in seniors Sofia Blanco, Marina Guinart and Katarina Stresnakova. Head head coach Chris Young has also brought along newcomers in Catherine Gulihur, Tamara Arnold and Bunyawi Thamchaiwat. The two latter mentioned joined the team in Stillwater just over a month ago. Gulihur had a successful fall season with the Cowgirls winning two doubles titles. After sitting out for the 17-18 season, Lisa Marie Rioux also joins the Cowgirl lineup. The Cowgirls play a home-heavy spring schedule in 2019 with 11 of their 18 scheduled regular season matches set to take place at the Greenwood Tennis Center. The home schedule is a welcome sight for Young, whose Cowgirls have won 47 of their last 50 matches held at the facility. In its first contest of the spring, OSU traveled to the Bahamas and faced No. 4 Duke in the first international NCAA tennis dual. The team fell to a talented Blue Devil squad, but has since collected two dominant wins over No. 22 Tulsa and Wyoming. In the offseason, Young hired Henner Nehles to the Cowgirl staff as his assistant coach. Nehles is known as one of the top developmental coaches in tennis, serving as an instructor for profes-sional stars such as Jelena Jankovic and Sam Querrey. He comes to Stillwater following a three-year stint coaching the United States Tennis Association's women's tennis team. The USTA named him Team USA Developmental coach of the year in 2016.

COWGIRLS IN THE ITA RANKINGS The Oklahoma State women's tennis team remains ranked No. 8 this week in the Oracle/ITA Division I rankings, Katie Stresnakova led the Cowgirls in the ITA's March 5 singles poll, slotted at No. 26. Also accompanying Stresnakova in the rankings are Cowgirls Marina Guinart (No. 83), Lisa Marie Rioux (No. 117) and Sofia Blanco (No. 124). Rioux lands in the rankings following an upset at the Blue Gray, which also led to her being named Co-Big 12 Women's Tennis Player of the Week. In doubles, Sofia Blanco finds herself in the rankings twice; once at No. 21 alongside freshman Catherine Gulihur and again at No. 39 with partner Lisa Marie Rioux. HOME COURT ADVANTAGE

Since it opened for the 2013-14 season, the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center has proven a tough place to play for Cowgirl opponents. The Cowgirls won 38-straight matches at the new home facility, beginning in March, 2015. The streak continued into the 2017-18 season up until the No. 23 Ole Miss Rebels upended the Cowgirls, 4-1. After going undefeated at home in 2016 and 2017 (18-0), the Cowgirls dropped three home duals in 2018. OSU has racked up a 64-6 overall record in the GTC over the past five seasons, including a home-opening win last weekend. A look at the numbers:

DOMINATING THE BIG 12

The Cowgirls have arisen as a force in the Big 12 Conference over the last several seasons. Since 2014, OSU has won 38 conference matches, which is one more than the next closest team in that span, Texas Tech. Overall, OSU has lost only three conference matches in the past three seasons. The last time the Cowgirls lost more than two conference matches in a season was 2013, before the Greenwood Tennis Center opened. The Cowgirls have made four of the last six Big 12 Champion-ship matches, finally breaking through in 2016 to win their first since 2003 with a 4-0 win over Texas Tech.

AMONG THE ELITE

OSU has won 20+ matches in each of the last four seasons. In that span, the Cowgirls have won 97 matches. That total ranks third among Division I programs, behind only North Carolina and Vanderbilt. Ohio State shares the third-place position.

COWGIRLS GO INTERNATIONAL

Oklahoma State women's tennis team made history in its 2019

opening dual when it played the first NCAA tennis match outside the United States. The Cowgirls squared off with returning NCAA semifinalist and fourth-ranked Duke in the Bahamas. The Blue Devils fielded two top-ten singles players in No. 8 Ma-ria Mateas and No. 10 Meible Chi. and four total ranked individuals. Although the Cowgirls came up short, Young said the experi-ence was great for the team, and the OSU fans who traveled gave the women an advantage even on the islands.

FRESH FACES

Head coach Chris Young added two new Cowgirls to the OSU women's tennis roster on over the winter break. Sophomores Tamara Arnold and Bunyawi Thamchaiwat joined the Pokes begin-ning in January and made their first starts against No. 4 Duke in the Bahamas Arnold joins the OSU squad after a year at Tyler Junior College in Texas. As a freshman, she was the top-ranked juco player com-ing in at No. 150 in the ITF singles rankings. Thamchaiwat enters 2019 as a sophomore in the Cowgirl lineup . She notched her first singles win against Wyoming and has gone undefeated with partner Arnold in doubles this spring.

NEHLES TAKES ASSISTANT COACH POST

Oklahoma State women's tennis coach Chris Young announced changes to the program's coaching staff this summer, tabbing Henner Nehles as associate head coach to replace former assis-tant coach Hayley Carter, who has decided to pursue a professional tennis career on the WTA tour. In 2016, Nehles coached young tennis standout Kayla Day to a world No. 1 junior ranking after winning the girls' singles title and reaching the doubles final at the U.S. Open. As a pro, Day reached a career high singles ranking of No. 122 in 2017. Recently, he worked with Amanda Anisimova, who won the U.S. Open Juniors and reached the No. 1 world junior ranking as well before attaining a career-high singles ranking of No. 126 last fall. Nehles also assisted in coaching former Eddie Herr Girls' 18's champion Kylie McKenzie and Easter Bowl Girls' 18's champion Alexandra Sanford. Nehles has also served as a USTA faculty coach and the director and head coach of the USTA Regional Training Center. He spent a season in 2006 as the assistant women's tennis coach at UNLV. Nehles played collegiately at UNLV, where he was voted the 2005 Mountain West Conference Player of the Year and Intercol-legiate Tennis Association Regional Senior of the Year. He was also a three-time All-MWC honoree.OSU TO HOST NCAA TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center is set to host the NCAA Tennis Championships in 2020, May 14-23. The Greenwood Tennis Center was unveiled in January 2014 with the indoor portion of the complex hosting its first varsity matches. The facility's twelve outdoor courts were opened later that year. After a tour of the Greenwood Tennis Center, a tweet from the United States Tennis Association pronounced OSU's new complex as one of the top two collegiate facilities in the country. The organi-zation later recognized the Greenwood Center at the 2016 United States Tennis Association Outstanding Facility Awards. It was the only collegiate facility to receive the honor for 2016. Since its dedication, the Greenwood Tennis Center has hosted the 2016 Big 12 Championships, the 2014 ITA Women’s Central Region Championships and the 2016 Men’s ITA Central Region Championships. In the fall of 2017, the facility hosted the inaugural USTA Stillwater Pro Tennis Classic, which was the first USTA Pro Circuit event to be held in the state of Oklahoma in over a decade. Both the OSU men’s and women’s tennis programs are trending upward under the leadership of Udwadia and Young since the opening of the state-of-the-art facility.

VIRGINIA NO. 21 0

OKLAHOMA STATE NO. 10 4STILLWATER – Behind a solid performance from newcomer Bunyawi Tham-chaiwat, the Oklahoma State women's tennis team defeated No. 21 Virginia, 4-0, Friday in the opening round of the 2019 ITA Kick-Off Weekend. Thamchaiwat collected her second win in the Greenwood Tennis Center this week when she upended No. 32, Meghan Kelley. After going up, 6-3, in the first set, the Cowgirl mirrored the score in the second set to secure another OSU sweep. "Meghan Kelley is a senior who has been around for a while, and is a nationally ranked player," coach Chris Young said. "Katie (Stresnakova) and Lisa Marie (Rioux) had played against Meghan this fall, and for Bunyawi to come in as a freshman and play one of the better players in the country, and play the way she did, she was really composed." The Cowgirls started the evening winning the doubles point. The first-year tan-dem of Tamara Arnold and Thamchaiwat defeated Cavaliers Vivian Glozman and Hunter Bleser, 6-2, to collect OSU's first doubles win. Shortly after, Rioux and Guinart came out on top against Virginia's Chloe Gullickson and Amber O'Dell, 6-3 to clinch the doubles point. "I think overall the competitiveness of the match was great," coach Chris Young said. "I think doubles really stood out to us. We knew that was going to be a big thing, so just getting that, 1-0, lead in these big matches is really important. It was also big that we won the first set on all six courts. For them to know they are down, 1-0, and to look on every court and see they lost the first set. The girls took the momentum from doubles and really stepped up." Sofia Blanco struck first for the Cowgirls in singles, defeating Sofia Munera, 6-2, 6-2. Stresnakova notched another Cowgirl win, 6-0, 6-4, over Amber O'Dell. The Cowgirls are back action at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow in the Greenwood Tennis Center tomorrow and take on the Jayhawks in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend championship.

OKLAHOMA STATE NO. 9 4STILLWATER – The Cowgirl tennis team secured its spot in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships with a 4-3 win over No. 16 Kansas in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend Championship on Saturday at the Greenwood Tennis Center. The team bounced back after dropping the doubles point to win four singles matches and defeat its third ranked opponent this season. "I think this win is very important to give us more momentum, and I think that if we can perform well this next weekend, it will set us up well to go to the National Indoors," coach Chris Young said. After winning her first set, she lost the second in a tight tiebreaker, before com-ing back to top No. 70 Nina Khmelnitckaia, 6-3, 6-7(6), 6-4. UCLA NO. 8 4

OKLAHOMA STATE NO. 9 1STILLWATER– The Cowgirl tennis team lost its second weekend match to UCLA on Saturday afternoon at the Greenwood Tennis Center, 4-1, after retir-ing two matches due to injury. Catherine Gulihur and Sofia Blanco were forced to retire their matches, allotting the Bruins two singles points after they initially won doubles play. "We knew coming in we were a little banged up… we knew that coming in from last night at Arkansas," coach Chris Young said. "Those two hadn't lost all season, so for our two best points this year to not be able to complete their match due to injury, it changes the dynamic a little bit." The Cowgirls fell in doubles on courts one and two to sixth-ranked duo Gabby Andrews and Ayan Broomfield and No. 12 pair Jada Hart and Elysia Bolton, which left Bunyawi Thamchaiwat and Tamara Arnold's bout unfinished. "I thought UCLA came out and played with great energy and purpose in doubles," Young said. "I felt like we still had a little bit of a hangover from last night and didn't start really well. As matches started to wear on, you could see the level was very similar across the board." Catherine Gulihur came off a tough Friday loss at Arkansas that came down to the third set in the dual-deciding match, falling to Jackie Carr 6-4. The Cowgirl defeated UCLA's Taylor Johnson, 6-3, 6-2, to bounce back and win OSU's only point on the afternoon. "I think it was a really good bounce back from how I played against Arkansas," Gulihur said. "It was a really tough loss for me and the team and coming back and being able to play so strong and be on top of my game with the energy I had was really a good confidence booster for me." The Cowgirls return to action next weekend at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Seattle, Wash., beginning on Thursday.

OKLAHOMA STATE NO. 9 1SEATTLE, Wash.– Oklahoma State women's tennis dropped a close dual to No. 15 South Carolina, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon following Friday's postpone-ment of play at the ITA Women's Indoor Team Championships. The ninth-ranked Cowgirls took three of six singles matches into a third set but ultimately came up short after Marina Guinart secured the only point in individu-al play, defeating Megan Davies, 6-4, 6-2, to knot the contest at a point apiece. "Credit to South Carolina for setting the tone with doubles," said coach Chris Young. "We were able to regroup and had a great opportunity to get four points in singles but just came up a little short." Katarina Stresnakova and Catherine Gulihur fell to Ingrid Gamarra Martins and Mia Horvit, 6-2, just before Tamara Arnold and Bunyawi Thamchaiwat nabbed the Cowgirls' lone doubles win, 6-2, over Megan Davies and Kennedy Wicker. Gamarra Martins and Horvit are the fourth-ranked doubles tandem in the country. Guinart and Lisa Marie Rioux lost a 6-3 dual to Silvia Chinellato and Paige Cline, surrendering the first point to the Gamecocks. No. 16 Gamarra Martins bested Stresnakova in two sets just after Thamchai-wat lost her bout to No. 38 Cline, 6-3, 6-1. On court 5, after falling behind in the first, Gulihur won a tiebreaker in the second set over Chinellato, 7-6(7), but ultimately the bout went unfinished. In three, Rioux dropped a hard-fought competition to No. 79 Horvit, 6-2, 4-6, 3-6. Sophomore Arnold also forced a third set and had a lead over South Carolina's Kennedy Wick in the third set when the match ended. "Fortunately, we have a break in the schedule now that will allow us to get healthy and improve for the second half of the year," Young said. The Cowgirls have next weekend off and won't return to action until Feb. 22, at the Blue-Gray Championships in Montgomery, Ala.
