Functions of Dispersants The dispersants are generally long chain compounds (hydrophobic
end) with polar groups (hydrophilic end)such as carboxylate, sulfonates, or phosphate.
Dispersants decrease interfacial surface tension between the water and oil and facilitate the transfer speed of oil from the water surface into the water column to mitigate oil spill impacts.
