New spring, new city. New friends. This is what today of foreign students who study in Odessa is like.«OI» newspaper will help you to orient in this new world. This is why the newspaper was created by Odessa I.I. Mechnikov National University. From different sections of the newspaper you will find out about your rights and duties, about education, culture, sport and entertainment in Odessa and Ukraine, about culture and traditions of other countries. We, the authors of the newspaper, believe that our newspaper will help you to find your way to success.In March the traditional Middle East holiday of spring — Nevruz — is celebrated. That is why Consul General of Turkey and leaders of Turkish associations became the guests of the issue.You will also learn how a smile and a joke can help you to start feeling as an insider in any company. In April a great city festival «Humorina» takes place in Odessa, and this knowledge will be very useful for you. Good luck!

§ Starting March 25th, the Odessa Airport is switching to the summer schedule. Regular weekly flights will link Odessa with Athens, Baku, Erevan, Kaliningrad, Larnaca, Munich and Tbilisi.§ The city administration decided to dedicate the Humor Festival this year to the football championship Euro-2012. Odessa's streets will witness cars styled to look like a football stadium and bleachers. A ship carrying one thousand Japanese tourists will stop at the port and its passengers will take part in the Humor Festival.§ On the eve of the World Water Day Odessa citizens planted a grove on the banks of the Dniester River. The work party included deputies and employees of the Odessa Regional Council, workers of the forestry department and students. These 600 plants are a part of the «Million trees for the Dniester from the government and society» campaign.§ March 31st, at 20:30 people in the whole world will shut off all electricity for one hour in order to demonstrate their readiness to join forces in fighting the

change of climate. Odessa's «Earth's Hour» will consist of two more competitions — «Poet of the Earth's Hour» and «Green crossword solver. The «Earth's Hour» campaign is supported by state structures and those people who aren't indifferent to the problems of ecology.§ The newspaper for foreign students «Odessa International» was presented at the I.I. Mechnikov ONU. The first bilingual newspaper in the region was distributed to 1.5 thousand foreign students, and also about consulates of Odessa, members of the city and regional administration. The ONU rector, professor Igor Koval, called the periodical a «useful and timely project».§ The Opera Theater is inviting you to a premiere on the 28th of April. The significant event in the history of the Odessa opera stage is the Mozart's opera «Don Juan». The performance is directed by the national artist of Russia Iuriy Alexeev and people's artist of Russia Viacheslav Okunev, who directed opera performances that were highly appreciated by music lovers of the whole world.

The general consulate of the Republic of Turkey is situated on Lidersovsky Boulevard — just across from Turkey. In sunny days, according to those Odessa’s citizens that are farsighted, one may trace the silhouettes of this beautiful country on the horizon. Well, if not to see, then at least to imagine. The tall minarets, ruins of antique temples, domes of mosques and Byzantium chapels... Consulate General of the Republic of Turkey Mr. Husseyin Ergani kindly agreed to tell the special correspondent of OI about Turkey, the relationship between our countries and his impression of Odessa.

Holos Katalin(Hungary,­trainee­of­I.I.­Mechnikov­ONU)— Is there the Saint (protector) of Odessa? When is his/her day celebrated? Is there the city's holiday?Two Christian Saints can claim the title of Odessa Patron (Protector). St. Nicholas, Patron of seafarers, to whose honour the first church in Odessa was consecrated in 1795, is one. Most Holy Mother of God is also considered to be the saviour of Odessa, who twice warded off hostile Anglo-French squadron from Odessa in 1854. The Day of the city is celebrated in Odessa on September 2 to honour the first construction works of 1794. Traditionally a concert on Potemkin Steps, exhibition of flowers and other festivities are arranged. (Beginning­on­page­2.)Greetings, Mr. Consul General. Our first question will be on Odessa. What kind of a city do you think Odessa is?First of all, to me this is a marine city. The presence of the sea is felt in everything here. Odessa is also a cultural center for me. Family values are prized highly here. Odessa citizens have great love for their children. The city has been planned well, the architecture surprises the visitors with its diversity. Just yesterday, I had the chance to visit the Arts Museum. The number and variety of the paintings of famous artists I was able to see there is truly incredible. Seeing Aivazovsky amazed me! Overall, for me Odessa is a city full of secrets and discoveries. By the way, the Art Museum exhibits a portrait of Michael Braykovich, who was the mayor of Odessa in 1918 ... Yes, before his migration to Great Britain, this Odessa citizen constructed and owned the building that we are occupying now! The representation of Turkey in Odessa is now located in it. Last year the descendants of Mr. Braykovich visited the Consulate General and had sentimental moments all 

together as they walked through the house of their grandfather. It is truly a monument of the Art nouveau epoch. Its reconstruction was a real present for the citizens of Odessa. The relationship between ukraine and Turkey has been developing successfully. Soon the non-visa regime will come into effect. But the transportation between Istanbul and Odessa is relatively expensive. Do you think the trip might become

more affordable in the future?For many years the visa regulations between our countries have been relatively flexible — obtaining a visa did not pose much of an inconvenience. The agreement about the visa-free regime has been signed during the most recent visit of the President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych to Turkey. Currently the ratification of the agreement by the parliaments of both countries is underway. I hope the process would be finalized before the beginning of Euro-2012 as the agreement enters into force. I also believe that the waiving of visa requirement will intensify bilateral international contacts. This will mean that investing in transportation will become more profitable. Usually such tendencies lead to lower prices due to competition. I should also draw to your attention that by the end of last year Turkish Airlines have significantly lowered the prices for the flight Odessa-Istanbul.More than 400 students from Turkey are now obtaining their education in Odessa...This is true. Odessa is a wonderful alternative to the expensive European education for the Turkish students who seek education abroad. Ukraine is located 

very close to their home, the prices for accommodations and tuition fees here are quite reasonable. And most importantly, Ukrainian diplomas are recognized in Turkey, which means that the quality of the Ukrainian education is recognized too.The Turkish language is very easy to learn for ukrainians. However, today it is a problem to learn it in Odessa. Economics, history and international relations students are now studying it at Odessa I.I. Mechnikov national university. I really appreciate the interest to Turkish in Odessa region. Two lecturers of the Turkish language are now working at the Turkish Educational Center at I.I. Mechnikov ONU. There is a similar center at the South Ukrainian Pedagogical University. Still, today it isn't enough as Ukraine and Turkey are getting closer to each other every day... A sign of this to me is the convergence of our cultures. In particular, this is evident in the field of gastronomy. The diversity of national cuisines is traditional in Odessa....I prefer local food in Odessa. But certainly, when I get homesick, I prefer Turkish restaurants. The quality of restaurant services is very high here. I've traveled a lot in my life — lived in the USA, Europe, Afghanistan, Tajikistan. Ukraine stands out for this for its hospitality. Unlike western fast food dominated eating habits the restaurants here are elegantly decorated, and the chefs are unbelievably skilled. In general, I feel an openness of culture in Odessa as it is a cosmopolitan and multicultural city. It really feels like home!   Turkey has been radically reformed in the 1920s under the control of Ataturk. ukraine is also experiencing a period of modernization. Which

experiences of Turkey would be useful for us now? Primarily it is very important to understand that reforms are generally painful, but necessary. They change the centuries-old establishment of the state and the society. Ataturk transformed many areas of our society's life — education, political system, even the alphabet. There was a resistance for sure from different segments of the society but he managed to lay grounds for the modern Turkey. In his opinion secularism would be the guarantee of the social peace and stability and the reforms would elevate Turkey to the level of modern civilization. Ukrainians ought to understand that the changes in the system depend greatly on the society's readiness to accept reforms. The way that you are pursuing — liberalization of economy, democratization of society — will bring Ukraine closer to the European Union. I have no doubt that both Turkey and Ukraine have a European future. In conclusion, would you like to greet our readers with the traditional Turkish new Year, namely nevruz? Nevruz is the welcoming of the spring. It is traditionally celebrated on the day of the spring equinox, the 21st of March. Nevruz is celebrated in Central Asia, the Caucasus, the Middle East and the Balkans. On this day, the day becomes longer than the night, so we have more time for work and leisure. I sincerely would like to greet all the readers with this holiday and wish them to enjoy the joy and prosperity of this spring time their time would be spent with more efficiency and pleasure. Here in Odessa I study Russian, English and Spanish. Everyone is asking me why I need Spanish. There are almost no companies with such language in China, but I can be the first! I think I could make use of it in time. Well, my arrival was memorable. I was cheerfully greeted by taxi drivers that took me to my destination. A ten-minute drive cost me three times its regular price. I understood that foreigners are welcome here.

When I got accustomed, I took frequent walks, studied the city and its streets. Something that I've noticed and something that was unusual were the eyes of Odessa women. They are green, blue, brown and grey. They're truly beautiful!I experienced many anecdotal situations at the University. My name is Lu Sinchen. But I can't think of a name I wasn't called. People searched for an equivalent of my name in Russian and Spanish. I was Sanya, Sasha, Alexandro. Everyone tried to be inventive.Life here was not only education, it was a survival school. Sometimes it gets really hard because I'm so far away from my family and friends. But I'm not one for giving up or losing heart. I think life still keeps a few surprises for me. I never regretted coming to this romantic city. I think many interesting stories will happen here with me in the future.

— What must a foreigner know about our history, history of ukraine? Is this knowledge of any use for them?History is a teacher of life. This is what the Romans said. History for foreigners is a teacher of life in Ukraine. Knowledge of history is applied knowledge, it explains to foreign guests phenomena and traditions, which cannot be understood only through knowledge of the language.History as a science systematizes a foreigner's knowledge about changeable social and political processes. Ukraine is on the border of East and West in a wide understanding. The Great Silk Road passes with one of its branches through Southern Ukraine — caravans with Chinese goods moved along it into Europe as far as two thousand years ago. South of Ukraine is closely connected with history of Turkey — in close contacts with normadic Turks and Ottoman Turks Ukrainians became who they are. Sharovary (wide trousers) is an example of Turkish influence, «kazak» is a Turkish word, coffee came to Europe from Turkey through Ukrainian merchantry.— How are credits and exams held?For half a year students study the most important moments of Ukrainian history.After that by results of written tests, creative tasks, tests and oral answers at the exam students get an evaluation of knowledge.— Do you have to use intermediary languages?It often happens that translation of a word or phrase requires more than what a standard dictionary gives. In this case we use the English language, blackboard language (I draw with chalk real puzzles with elements of rock art), language of gestures and theatre and image language. One of these methods always helps.— Which funny, curious situations can you remember?

Two curious situations come to mind. The first happened because students often do their creative task «with the aid» of the Internet. They print the text and submit is to the teacher. It is always evident. But in particular I was struck by a Chinese student who submitted me the task in Bulgarian language. When I asked him what language the answer is in, he answered with confidence «In Russian., because the letters are Russian». The second case took place in 2005. My students:  American, Japanese and Swedish and I were travelling around Transcarpathia. Near the monument CENTRE OF EUROPE we took pictures.  A frontier guard came to us and said that  it was forbidden, because a strategic site — a railway bridge — was near it. Then the Japanese said «I don't understand it. Our satellite can take a picture of a cockroach on this bridge.»

— Elena Ivanovna, what is the specificity of teaching the ukrainian language?— We have to pay a lot of attention to comparison of Ukrainian and Russian languages, including their use in everyday life. Foreign students sometimes are surprised why in shops and at the market salespeople speak Russian to them and when students start talking Ukrainian to each other in a mini-bus, people around start smiling and listening carefully  to their conversation.— And how do your students cope with it?— The resultant knowledge of the Ukrainian language which foreign students obtain at our preparatory department is very good. Their successful studying at our university and other higher educational establishments of Odessa testify to this. They are successful at universities of Western regions of Ukraine as well — in National University of Lviv, in Ivano-Frankovsk National technological University of Oil and Gas.

The first people to offer help are the lecturers, who become the first guides in the long journey of foreign students towards an understanding of the Ukrainian culture. A distinctive role in the process of adaptation is played by student associations. In them, the older students take care of their younger friends. Our reporter had a talk with the managers of the Association of Turkish Students (Odessa city) Hasan Dikenli and Hussein Dogan. —­Good day, Hasan. Hello, Hussein. First of all, we would like to know what this organization called ATSO is.H. Dogan: Our organization was founded in 2006 and registered in 2008 I was chosen the first official head of ATSO. At this time 400 students from Turkey are studying in Odessa. Their biggest portion study at the I.I. Mechnikov ONU. Then goes South Ukraine Pedagogical University, Medical, Polytechnic Universities and the Marine Academy. There are 150 acting members in ATSO today.—­What if a Turkish student without a member's status seeks your help?H. Dikenli: We will also help him, just as if he was a member of the organization. We make no distinctions, it's most important that the student is our countryman. 

—­Can you tell us about the activities of this organization?H. Dikenli: We coordinate the efforts of Turkish students. Every week we share news about events, related to Turkish students in different Odessa higher education institutions. The meeting of student societies' representatives (about 20 persons) are held every Saturday. In essence, we are a real labor union. If disputes or arguments arise — our members turn to us for assistance.H. Dogan: one of our primary goals is to form a positive image of our motherland here, in Ukraine. We organized several cultural events, took part in charitable activities (for example «From heart to heart»), patronize one of the Odessa orphanages. Every year on the 19th of May we organize a national Turkish celebration in the ONU assembly hall called «Youth day».—­You both chose ukrainian higher education. Why?H. Dogan: There are many reasons of this, but the most important was the image of Odessa as a cultural center, its proximity to Turkey, low tuition fees and certainly the opportunity to receive a qualitative knowledge. Most Turkish students learn Russian here. —­Hasan is more of an exception — he has chosen law...

H. Dikenli: It was a conscious choice. I came to Odessa a year and a half ago. For a year I've been studying at the Preparation Department for Foreigners of ONU. This period was interesting and useful. I gained not only the knowledge in the field of Russian language, but also in history, literature, geography. All of it was really useful during admission exams. Many of my acquaintances are surprised at how I could learn so many subjects quickly and well on such short terms. This is all thanks to my teachers, moreover they have really become my second family. I really enjoy being in Odessa. I hope that after I get my diploma, as a lawyer, I'll be able to help my countrymen create fruitful cooperation with Ukrainians. —­Do you have problems in Odessa? Are conflicts frequent?H. Dogan: I have been living in Odessa for almost seven years. Many things happened, but I didn't really face significant problems. It is not surprising that if you take a walk at night, problems may arise. But this happens in any part of the world. Hasan and I are from Antalia, a touristic center. This is why Odessa is very familiar to me. The people here are just as open. They try to help others

at no expense and from the pureness of heart. Frequently I was walked to my destinations when I only asked for directions.—­The last question will be addressed to Hasan. You have recently taken the obligation of the chief of ACSO. What are your plans? H. Dikenli: I'm going to improve the system of relations between students and the administration of institutions. I'll try to cut down the bureaucratic delays and assure normal conditions for education of Turkish students. This activity will be profitable for Odessa citizens — by joining our efforts we can open the gateway for Turkish students.Thank you for the interview. We wish you and your organization success in the binding of Ukraine and Turkey. I'd also like to remind our readers that these countries are in fact two coasts of the same sea.

Odessa is full of smiles, happiness, humor and good, thoughtful people! A few years passed and now I'm here. In a city on sea shore, there is no doubt that there'll be talks about going to the beach and how wonderful it is to tan and swim there. But I can not swim! Many people are surprised by this: «How can this be? You're a sailor!» I know very well that local people love humor, so I always answer: «Yes. But pilots are unable to fly, yet they fly airplanes.» But this narrative is not about this. It's not about airplanes and not even about the sea.Six months being spent in this city, I fell in love not only with Odessa… As many of you already know, love doesn't knock on the door of our heart and ask «may I come in?» It rushes in like a hurricane and turns everything upside down. This is what happened to me. I met a girl at one of student meetings. I understood that I fell in love even before I heard her name. Later in conversation I found out from her that she is studying Spanish and leads the Spanish club. Without pausing to think I said that I've been to Spain, after all I am a sailor! To tell you the truth, I never liked the Spanish language. I couldn't understand how one can chatter as quickly as the

Spanish do. But in this situation I was forced to state the contrary in order to cause interest in my new acquaintance. Then the action plan was quite logical. I caught on to the Spanish club, stating that I hope to learn the language. In reality, it was only an opportunity to see her. As time passed, she helped me learn not only Spanish, but also Russian. Every time she tried to make the time useful. If not Spanish, she just had to teach me something in Russian. And here we are learning the names of fingers: thumb, forefinger, middle finger, fourth finger. I thought it was weird that in Russian the name of this finger means «no name-finger». In Turkey this finger has a great significance. It is considered that at this finger starts a vein that runs straight to the heart. This is why grooms put the ring on this finger at wedding day. She liked this story, I hope, just as you like it. Then, like now, I tried to tell something interesting.Yes, time flies. The term of my education is ending. I will need to go home soon. Every time we meet is more precious than the previous. Falling in love is such an interesting feeling. I don't know enough Russian, or even Turkish, in order to describe my feelings.I can't tell you yet, how this story will end, but I know one thing. My attitude towards the Spanish language has changed a lot. Next year I plan to study in Spain. I am lucky to know this girl and glad that I've chose to study here. I'm very happy about everything that happened in my life. Who knows what will happen next… Maybe one day, somewhere we'll meet again and again the ground will shake under our feet and wings will grow on our backs…

They will help you resolve an inconvenient situation in public transport, at the university or in a supermarket with a smile. So…A situation in class: You aren't able to catch up with the lecturer — he is taking or writing on the board too fast. Then you raise your hand, stand up and say «Slower, plz, I'm taking notes…». The second word needs to be pronounced slowly, as if you were chewing.
