In an effort to reach consumers where they spend their time and potentially seek information, the Ohio Pork Council has turned to social media to engage in conversations and serve as a resource for positive useful information about food and farming. Beginning on Monday, June 15, the Ohio Pork and Beef Council’s invited consumers to participate in the #OHBaconBurger contest hosted on Instagram, an increasingly popular social media platform that allows more than 300 million registered users to “capture and share the world’s moments” via photo sharing. To participate in the contest, users were required to “follow” both the @OhioPork and @OhioBeef pages on Instagram and post a picture of a delicious bacon burger using the official #OHBaconBurger hashtag. More than 80 entries were submitted through June 30 and one contestant was randomly selected to win $500 toward even more pork and beef. The contest proved to be successful, increasing overall engagement with OPC’s social media efforts and increasing @OhioPork’s Instagram following by over 130%. “Providing social content that is both entertaining and engaging is what brings personality to a brand and build relationships,” said Quinton Keeran, Ohio Pork Council Director of Communications. “By building these relationships and communicating openly about food and how it is grown, we are able to increase trust in farmers and their products, and increase consumer comfort when making food-purchasing decisions.” PANDORA ONLINE RADIO ADS ENCOURAGE COOKING WITH PORK To encourage the use of pork in meal preparation at home, the Ohio Pork Council is running advertisements through Pandora, the popular online radio service that requires users to engage with brands’ advertisements to continue listening to the free music tailored specifically to their interests. In June, OPC ran an ad focused on Pork Tenderloin, targeted to Ohio women, between the ages of 30-44. The visual component of the ad, pictured to the left, linked users to OhioPork.org, and was accompanied by the following script that played between songs. “You love tender, juicy and flavorful which is exactly how pork tenderloin will taste when cooked to perfection. Pork tenderloin is just as lean as skinless chicken breast and tastes its delicious best when grilled to an internal temperature of 145ºF with a three-minute rest. So whether you use an Asian teriyaki marinade or honey mustard glaze, grill pork tenderloin for a healthy meal with amazing flavor. Click here or visit OhioPork.org for cooking tips and recipe ideas.”

Gables Elementary students recently visited Price Farms Organics, in Delaware, Ohio, as part of an ongoing effort of the Ohio Livestock Coalition (OLC) to teach Ohio students about the origins of the food they eat and the important role agriculture

plays in Ohio’s economy. OLC conducted a statewide essay contest for third-grade students. Participants were asked to respond to the question, “How do Ohio farm-ers make sure we have good, safe food to eat?” A student from Gables Elementary won the contest and was awarded a field trip for the entire class. During the trip to Price Farms Organics, students learned about life on the Ohio hog farm and composting facility.

The essay contest, part of OLC’s For Your InFARMation program, is designed to teach students about farmers and the economy, livestock farming, keys to safe and healthy food and careers in agriculture.

FUNDING AVAILABLE TO WESTERN LAKE ERIE BASIN FARMERS TO IMPROVE WATER QUALITY

Funding will be available through the Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP), providing $17.5 million from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to help protect water quality in the western basin of Lake Erie. The five-year RCPP agreement was signed on Friday, May 1, and is now ready to assist farmers in installing a variety of best management practices that will keep nutrients on fields and improve water quality. Program enrollment officially kicks off for Ohio, Michigan and Indiana farmers in designated watersheds on Wednesday, July 1, and runs through Friday, July 17, and farmers will be able to sign up at their local USDA Service Center. This multi-state project includes more than 40 collaborating public and private sector organizations with representation from Ohio, Michigan and Indiana, state and local governments, as well as nonprofit entities, universities and private sector businesses. These organizations have committed resources to leverage $17.5 million in federal funds by contributing more than $28 million to the programs for the reduction of phosphorus and sediment to improve water quality in the Western Lake Erie Basin. Project partners recommended USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) conservation practices and innovative demonstration practices that farmers can apply for through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and the Agricultural Conservation Easement Program (ACEP). The financial and technical assistance available through these programs support conservation practices that protect soil health, water quality and quantity, as well as prevent fish and wildlife habitat degradation. Nutrient management practices such as cover crops, drainage water management structures, blind tile inlets, placement of phosphorus below the soil surface using variable rate technology (VRT) and animal waste management are the primary conservation focus available through these programs. The targeted approach focuses efforts on the 855,000 acres that have been identified as the most critical areas to treat within the larger 7 million acre watershed. This new RCPP project expands access to public and private technical assistance, new and ongoing

innovative conservation practices and expertise for modeling and evaluating outcomes to farmers in these critical sub-watersheds. Informational brochures will be distributed to raise awareness of this important multi-year project and encourage farmers and landowners to participate in the new conservation program.

Agricultural producers in the Western Lake Erie Basinare eligible to apply at wleb.org or they can visit their local USDA Service Center.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO PROMOTE PORK AND FARMING AT CONSUMER EVENTS

In order to increase the likelihood that consumers will choose to cook with pork, it is crucial, first, to develop their comfort with the product. Therefore, each year, OPC dedicates time and resources to attending consumer events and engaging in personal interactions about where pork comes from and what to do with it once it’s in the kitchen.

Recently, the Ohio Pork Council attended the 94th Annual Ohio Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Conference, to take part in the trade show and answer questions attendees had about pork and modern farming. Approximately 140 dieticians, nutritional professional and students were in attendance. OPC also attends several Taste of Home Cooking Schools throughout Ohio each year, to encourage properly cooking pork to 145ºF. OPC staff joined farmer volunteers in Wintersville on April 15th, Celina on May 5th and Nelsonville on June 18th. To showcase ease of use and versatility, a pork loin is taken to each show to demonstrate the many options available from just one cut of meat. Over 600 bite-sized samples of pork were prepared and sampled at this year’s events.

OPC ATTENDS FOOD EVENTS TO SHOWCASE PORK VERSATILITY AND INCREASE CONSUMER COMFORT

With a focus on preparing the next generation of skilled individuals involved in strengthening Ohio’s pork industry, the Ohio Pork Council is excited to announce that applications are now being accepted for the 2015-16 Ohio Pork Ambassador Team program.

The Ohio Pork Ambassador Team program serves as an opportunity for qualified youth to act as a voice for the Ohio Pork Industry. The goal of the program to educate and develop ambassadors for the pork industry so that they may better share their own agricultural-based story, including their background and experiences. Team members will be involved in communicating with consumers on topics such as food safety, nutrition, and animal care practices of the pork industry. Promotion of Ohio’s pork industry shall be carried out through the development of skills in self-confidence, communication, leadership, and teamwork.

Applications and additional details are available at OhioPork.org.

For more information, contact Quinton Keeran at 614-882-5887.
