Driving Miss Daisy is blooming in Wanganui!Driving Miss Daisy is known nationwide for being the safest and most comfortable companion driving service. Stephanie Bishop, the Wanganui franchisee, is getting out and about delivering an outstanding companion driving service across the region from Waverley in the North to Turakina Beach in the South, including Waitotara, Kai Iwi, Wanganui and Whangaehu.

“I’ve had some wonderful experiences these last few months,” says Stephanie. “As well as my regular clients who go out once or twice a week to various appointments and clubs, I’ve had the privilege of taking a client to New Plymouth for a family party, enjoyed a trip to Palmerston North airport with an excited couple heading overseas and even been as far as Wellington. I’m particularly looking forward to accompanying a client to a family wedding in the New Year. I love weddings!”

Going Guarantor? Things you should know…..If you’re considering guaranteeing other people’s finances, ask yourself: are you able to pay if things go wrong?

It is common for older people to be asked to be a credit contract guarantor for a family member, usually a child or grandchild.

When you sign a form to be a guarantor you are doing much more than just witnessing a document or providing a character reference. In fact you are agreeing to repay the mortgage/loan/hire purchase of the borrower if they cannot or will not repay their debt.

Similarly, older people are sometimes asked to be guarantor for telephone or electricity accounts or are asked to have a connection for another family member put under their name. If the person you are guaranteeing defaults on the payments, you will have to pay even if you can’t afford to.

Questions you should ask yourself• Why are you being asked to be a guarantor?• Are you being coerced or emotionally blackmailed? (For example, do you feel obliged to help out family, even if you know there is a high risk they can’t/won’t pay?)• Why is a guarantor required - is there a bad credit history?• Is the borrower realistic about the repayments - can they afford them even if things go wrong? (For example, what happens if they lose their job?)• How mature and responsible is the borrower?• Is the loan for a need or a want? • Is the loan for a new business? (Many new businesses don’t succeed.)• Is the loan for an existing business? (If the business is viable, there should be enough capital in the business to secure a loan without a guarantor.)• Can you afford to pay any default on the part of the borrower?

The reality of acting as guarantorIf you act as guarantor for a phone or power connection, you will have to pay any large toll or service accounts that the person you are acting for

can’t/won’t pay.

If you are acting as guarantor for a bank loan, it is common that the amount guaranteed is unlimited and includes future borrowings (e.g. extra interest on an overdraft). If the borrower defaults, the bank can demand repayment from the guarantor and does not have to exhaust other remedies first.

As well as having to pay the amount borrowed, you will also be responsible for debt recovery costs.Anything you list as a security can be taken and sold to pay the debt. This could even include your home if you use it as security.

A good rule of thumb is: only act as guarantor if you can write a cheque for the amount you are guaranteeing at the time you are asked to act as guarantor.

Taking action when things go wrongIf you have signed an unwise guarantee it’s important to get legal advice immediately as there may be legal remedies available. Your local Community Law office can help with this.The lender must also keep guarantors informed about problems with the mortgage/loan/hire purchase repayments so it’s vital to act quickly before matters come to a head.(Source: www.ageconcern.org.nz)

My father was seen driving around the Carlton Ave-Fitzerbert Ave roundabout the wrong way eating an ice cream. He was noticed by family friends and by the time he got home my step mother was well aware of the problem. He held a current drivers licence and was obviously a danger on the road to himself and to other drivers. Broaching the subject with Dad was not easy. With discussion we managed with a degree success to get him beyond driving.

A loss of independence and social contact, relying on family members are serious issues for our loved ones. The simple things like going to bowls, to the supermarket, to the hairdresser are affected.

Protecting yourself against scamsThere are so many scams – how do I spot one?The commonest scams include emails asking you to send money to a friend or organisation, letters saying you’ve won a prize, or calls or visitors saying your computer needs fixing or your house needs painting. If a stranger tries to sell you something, beware. If an offer sounds too good to be true, or sounds weird, it’s almost certainly a scam.

A bank or Inland Revenue will never contact you to ask you to confirm your password, credit card or account details.

How can I protect myself?Scammers can sound very plausible. So it’s best not to give any information about yourself to strangers – especially on the phone, at your door, or on your computer. Put the phone down, close your door, or delete the email.

Genuine businesses won’t put pressure on you. They’ll be happy to prove who they are. They’ll let you speak to a manager, and they’ll give you time to consider what you want to do.

Check with your relatives or friends if you’re not sure whether something’s a scam.

Age Concern New Zealand supports the Do Not Knock campaign

Age Concern supports Consumer NZ’s ‘Do Not Knock’ campaign and encourages anyone who does not wish to be approached by door-to-door sellers to get a Do Not Knock sticker.

Age Concern New Zealand Chief Executive Robyn Scott says Age Concern often receives phone calls from older people who have been pressured into making a purchase by door-to-door sales people.“It is a huge concern that older people are being targeted, particularly

vulnerable older people who may have dementia, hard of hearing or are otherwise unable to recognise that they are being taken for a ‘ride’” says Mrs Scott.

Older people can feel pressured by smooth talking sellers into purchasing items they don’t want and can’t afford, leaving them out of pocket, which Mrs Scott says is a problem particularly for older people who are living on NZ Superannuation alone.

“Often the sellers are charming and friendly and for lonely older people who receive few visitors this can be very attractive. However, once an older person has engaged in conversation with the seller they can be very persistent and often do not leave until the older person has signed up or paid.”

Age Concern advises older people to place a Do Not Knock sticker on their gate, letterbox or front door if they do not wish to be approached by door-to-door sales people.

Stickers are currently available at Citizens Advice Bureau and Resene Paint Shops and will be available at Age Concern Wanganui.

RUTH PRETTY’S MINTED PEA DIPIngredients• 1 cup frozen peas – NOT minted• 1 cup fresh mint, chopped finely• ¼ cup olive oil • ¼ cup Greek yoghurt

MethodCook the peas, drain. Add the peas and the fresh mint in the food processor and whiz, slowly adding the olive oil until it reaches a smooth consistency. Add the yoghurt for a smooth consistency. Season and chill.

Raspberry Coulis125g fresh raspberriesJuice 1/2 lemon1/4 cup castor sugar1/2 tsp of brandy (optional)

Topping300ml fresh cream – whipped1 x pomegranteRaspberries, cherries and strawberries to decorateBunch of holly or fresh mint

Preheat oven to 120C. Line a tray with baking paper. Use a round baking tin to draw one large circle (22cm) then draw another circle inside it approximately 13cm wide.

Beat egg whites and salt until soft peaks form. Beat in sugar, a little a t time until meringue is stiff and shiny. Sprinkle over sifted cornflour, vinegar and fold in lightly. You should be able to up end the bowl at this stage with no fear of anything coming out.

Grab a dessert spoon and scoop a dollop of meringue. Place this dollop between the outside and inside line. Repeat until a ring of meringue is complete. Create a second layer of meringue on top of the first until second ring is complete. Flatten the top by smoothing the meringue.

Place meringue in oven for 2 hours at 120C. When time is complete, turn off the oven and leave meringue in the oven until completely cool. This is very important as there will be less risk of the meringue cracking and collapsing.

When cool, spread with whipped cream, drizzle on raspberry coulis then decorate with cherries, pomegranates, strawberries, raspberries and holly or mint.

Raspberry CoulisBlend fresh raspberries, lemon juice and sugar together until sugar has completely dissolved. Set aside until required.

As the new Minister for Senior Citizens, I intend to be a strong advocate for older New Zealanders, and being invited into Cabinet by the Prime Minister means the voice of your sector will now be heard around the top table.

My “trifecta” of Senior Citizens, Arts, Culture and Heritage and Conservation is a dream-come-true portfolio line-up for me. The wellbeing of older New Zealanders is close to my heart and I will be travelling around the country to meet as many of the seniors groups and key stakeholders in the sector as I can.

As Minister for Senior Citizens, I take a whole of government advocacy role on behalf of older people, particularly in relation to policy development and decision making.

This means supporting positive ageing and the wellbeing of older New Zealanders in a range of areas and I’ll be your advocate across retirement income, employment, housing, transport, ageing in the community, disability support, community and voluntary sector involvement and the protection of older people’s rights and interests.

From humble beginnings, the SuperGold Card programme now has over 11,500 business outlets throughout NZ providing discounts. I am committed to increasing the value of the programme, especially for those cardholders living outside the main city centres.

I’m very aware after experiences with my own mother’s decline into dementia, that there are many vulnerable older people who don’t always have the advocates and safeguards they need, and they deserve dignity and respect in their final years.

I have also been actively involved in the palliative care sector for many years as a former Patron of Hospice NZ. Prior to entering Parliament, I chaired a working party into the care of those who are dying and during the last Parliamentary term, I founded the All Party Palliative Care Group, a cross-party initiative to raise awareness and support in Parliament for the care of people who are dying.

I am also a co-founder of the Care Alliance which is a coalition assembled to oppose euthanasia and assisted suicide.

Before being elected to Parliament, I was an award-winning news and current affairs television and radio broadcaster, a magazine feature writer and co-producer and presenter of the television programme Maggie’s Garden Show. I was awarded the Order of NZ Merit for services to Broadcasting and intend to use all my skills to be a champion for issues that matter to older New Zealanders.

As the Minister for Senior Citizens, my priorities will include working to change attitudes towards ageing by encouraging people to value the role of older people in the workforce, as taxpayers and consumers.

Most importantly I will be raising awareness of elder abuse and neglect and social isolation, issues which I believe need to be taken seriously.

The number of people aged 65 and over has doubled since 1980 and is likely to double again to around 1.2 million over this next 30 years and I am very much looking forward to being a strong voice for New Zealand seniors in this 51st Parliament.

Goodbye Judith…….It is with reluctance that we farewelled Judith in November from her role as Service Co-ordinator at the Age Concern Wanganui Office in Marton. Judith created quite an impact in Marton during her time at Age Concern Wanganui. She grabbed the role with both hands and her presence was definitely felt in the community. Judith remains in Marton, we hope to see her around the office from time to time and we all wish her well.

The office will remain open although we are back to opening on Wednesday and Thursday only with staff from Wanganui supporting the Marton volunteer receptionists.

ST JOHNS HILL HEALTHCAREWe have been open for one year already – how time flies. An ambience of peace and relaxation is ensured in our beautiful gardens and our ‘Home away from Home’ facility environment. The views are one of the best in Wanganui, overlooking Wanganui City and the River.

Sue Walker is our Facility Manager. She has a long association in the Aged Care Industry in Wanganui and fosters a culture of person centred care. Jo Green, our Clinical Nurse Leader, has also had a long association in Wanganui with aged care and is also focused on person centred care. Lucie Kaal is the General Manager and also oversees our Christchurch Facility.

The facility offers 56 beds with en suites, all being good size rooms at hospital level care although we are taking some Resthome Residents as well. We still have a few vacant rooms and encourage people to pop in and have a look round. All rooms are currently charged at the Ministry of Health contract rates. At this stage we are not charging a premium on any of our rooms.

We have our transit van fitted with a hoist to carry 2 wheel chairs and 7 passengers for outings and trips to provide ongoing links to the community. Owners Malcolm & Lynda Tucker are very pleased with the end result, from the design to colours to carpet and furnishings.
