“FEELS LIKE HOME...” A message from Mayor Ginny Dickey

Iconic songwriter Randy Newman’s lyrics provide a simple but powerful message: There is a familiar, reassuring sense of place many hold in their hearts.

Fountain Hills offers this and more for our residents. We are a unique community with excellent schools, outdoor life, safe neighborhoods, a variety of amenities and small-town charm, all with easy access to a thriving metropolitan area with universities, entertainment and an international airport… yet surrounded by the mystery and wildlife of the desert, punctuated by our namesake fountain and lake.

Those passing by are drawn to enter. Visitors are tempted to stay. Our friendly citizens are eager to support businesses, education, new activities and opportunities.

When Fountain Hills residents venture away, we often hear how glad they are to get home to arguably one of the most beautiful places in the world…unequaled in sunsets, mountain shadows, blooming deserts and that sense of community. Indeed, why would anyone want to be away for long?

Randy Newman’s song ends with, “Feels like I’m on my way back where I belong.” Isn’t that what we all want?

Welcome to our home town, Fountain Hills!

THE FOUNTAINAt its full height of 560 feet, the fountain in the center of Fountain Hills is higher than the Washington Monument. It is also 10 feet taller than Notre Dame Cathedral, 110 feet higher than the Great Pyramid of Cheops in Egypt and three times as high as Old Faithful in Yellowstone Park. The fountain is the focal point of community celebrations and the pride of our residents. If you happen to visit during the St. Patrick’s Day celebration, you’ll see the fountain transform to bright emerald green. On special occasions, the fountain is extended to its full height and lights up in a rainbow of color at night. For everyday viewing, the fountain reaches a height of 330 feet! You can view livestream video of the famous fountain 24 hours a day at experiencefountainhills.org/thefountain.

south is Fire Necklace Mountain, named for when a fire burned down its slopes, encircling it. Native Americans found shelter here, as evidenced by petroglyphs and artifacts. Prospectors sought mineral wealth but discovered limited amounts of gold, silver and copper.

MT. MCDOWELL – FIREROCKOne of the most prominent landmarks near Fountain Hills and Fort McDowell is the jagged outline of Red Mountain, at 2,830 feet high. The deep cleft on its western flank is known as “Gunsight” because of its resemblance to the narrow slot in a fort used for firing at attackers. Its distinctive red color that glows dramatically in the last rays of day lead some to call it FireRock.

FOUR PEAKS – PURPLE MOUNTAIN MAJESTYThe lyrics “purple mountain majesty” could have been written for these peaks. They change with the light from lavender to violet to deep purple. Fittingly, the world’s finest amethyst is found high on its slopes. This mountain is one of the area’s highest points at 7,657 feet. Visitors and residents have grandstand seats for the daily spectacle of the sun rising dramatically behind Four Peaks.

MCDOWELL MOUNTAINSSome of the oldest rocks in Arizona make up the McDowell Mountain Range to the west. The range’s highest point is McDowell Peak at 4,034 feet. The rounded mountain to the
