Catch the EnergyEstevan is the Energy City in

more ways than one. A large percentage of the electricity for the province is generat-ed at our two power stations – Bound-ary Dam and Shand. We are right in the middle of the Bak-ken oil play with a large number of oil service companies. Coal production is extremely impor-tant for the power plants but is also exported from here. Th is also makes for an energized population. Over and over again, I have been told by visitors and newcomers to our city that it is an

extremely friendly city.We certainly have some of the

best amenities in the province. Our new events center, Spectra Place, is a great place to watch a hockey game or a concert. Anyone from around the province that has visited the facility have said it is one of the best they have seen. Part of the lob-by is shared with the

R..M. of Estevan Aquatic center which has received rave reviews since it opened many years ago. Several years ago a local by the name of Mel Murray spearhead-ed an initiative to build quality

ball diamonds and we now have several top baseball diamonds in our city.

Two large reservoirs – Bound-ary Dam and Raff erty provide great fi shing and boating. Two campgrounds – Woodlawn Park and Hidden Valley provide ac-commodation for the RVers of the province.

Tours are provided during the summer months to visit both power plants and the coalfi elds and are simply a must for visitors.

To support the growth of the city we have many support ser-vices and you will fi nd some quaint shops and interesting res-taurants among the normal fare of box stores.

You will be glad you visited.

A local natural wonderTh e rocks in Roche Percee are

hidden gems of the Southeast. French for pierced rock, the area is named for the rocks that have incredible heritage value, as an important landmark and record of the region’s historical land-scape.Inscribed with carvings of animals, humans and symbols believed to be a legacy of Siouan speaker, the Nakota considered the site sacred, leaving off erings each time they passed through

the area. Th e site has dealt with consid-

erable erosion and later carvings, but carved pits remain and red ochre are left imprinted in the rock, as the only telltale signs left that First Nations people noted the site. Th e names and dates of past and present visitors leave a historical record literally carved in stone.

Th e area was noted by early Eu-ropean settlers, appearing on ear-

ly maps and is mentioned in the 1853 annals of an American ex-pedition surveying for a railroad to the Pacifi c. Th e North West Mounted Police also camped near the site during their March west. Th e terrain is beautiful and a trip to Roche Percee is perfect to get outside on a nice sunny day.

From the caves inside the rocks to the colourful wildfl owers, the little gem has little details to keep you intrigued.

• The fi rst settlers in what was to become Estevan arrived in 1892.

• Some locals have said the rocks are haunted. This whole area is know for being haunted by beings know as “Rugeroos.” Old Indian spirits that change into animals. They are vicious and will harm you if you don’t leave when you see them. They don’t speak but will growl.

Th e Estevan Woodlawn Golf Course which is an 18 hole golf facility was severely aff ected by the fl ooding in 2011. However, with brilliant work put in by the staff and volunteers, the course will be opening its front 9 for the 2012. Construction has begun and the new Les Furber design for the back 9 should be ready for play in late fall 2012.

Th e Mainprize Regional golf course was designed by John F.

Robinson, a professional architect that has left his mark in many lo-cations across North America. He took advantage of the rolling, prai-rie wool covered valleys on the shoreline of the Raff erty, added to it a quiet country existence and molded a beautiful 18-hole “links” style golf course. Numerous visi-tors have remarked that “It is the only resort in Saskatchewan with a view of Scotland”.

Th e Estevan and surrounding area boasts great opportunities for anyone with the outdoors in mind. Hunt-ing, fi shing and hiking are among the most popular and are made possible through the hard work of the employees at Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment and volunteer organizations like the Estevan Wildlife Federation. Conservation offi cers work hard to protect and manage our natural resources while the EWF (Estevan Wildlife Federation) works hard to sustain natural habitat for our fi sh and wildlife and helps educate the public, especially our youth, so that we have fi sh and wildlife for generations to come. Each fall fi nds hundreds of area hunters taking to the fi elds in pursuit of Whitetail deer, Mule deer, Antelope, Moose and Elk. Th ere is also excellent water fowl populations due to the healthy watershed area and larger lakes like Raff erty, Boundary and Alameda dams. Our upland game bird populations continue to be excellent. Th e Estevan Wildlife Federation maintains an extensive winter feeding program made possible through it’s many volunteers, keeping the pheasants and grouse numbers healthy. Pheasants are also raised by the EWF for release each summer. Some of these birds are also bought by local landowners and companies like Sherritt Coal, and are in turn released on their lands to help keep populations stable. Fishing is also a favorite pastime in the Estevan area. Raff erty, Boundary and Alameda dams are excellent fi shing water bodies in the immediate area. Northern Pike, Walleye and Yellow Perch are abundant in each water body. Boundary Dam is also very well known for it’s Largemouth Bass fi shery. Th is is the only location in Western Canada where you can fi ght the mighty Largemouth Bass and fi shermen travel for hours to enjoy the experience. Th e Saskatchewan Ministry of Environment also stocks a couple of small water bodies with Splake, Brooke and Rainbow trout for everyone to enjoy trying their luck.

Boundary & Raff erty Dam

Vast water bodies in Saskatchewan are not just limited to the northern part of the province. Estevan is home to two magnifi cent water bodies which provide a bundle of recreation opportunities. Boundary and Raff erty Dams are the perfect spots to enjoy the water sports you love.

Minutes south of Estevan, Bound-ary Dam is a special place where an-glers can catch largemouth bass in Western Canada. Th e hot water return creates warmer temperatures which help the largemouth bass fi sh thrive in Boundary Dam. Th e dam has a boat launch, a beach and lots of room for all water sports.

For a quiet and private aft ernoon, Raff erty Dam is the ideal spot. At 50 kilometers long, Raff erty provides ample space to get away! Raff erty boasts bigger walleye than those in Boundary, as well as a healthy dose of northern pike, perch and brown trout.

Th ere are hidden treasures all over the world - including Estevan and area! Th ese hidden treasures are in the form of “caches”, small containers fi lled with trinkets and a log book for visitors to sign.

Using a GPS unit and specifi c coordinates, you follow the map searching for the hidden “cache” (container). When you fi nd it, open it up, sign the logbook and see what others have left behind. If you take a trinket, replace it with another. Return the cache to its original location. Keep the location a secret for others to enjoy.

Geocaching is free and easy. You can create a free account at www.geocaching.com , which will allow you to see all of the caches available.

Everything you need has been donated by Active Estevan. Con-tact the Estevan Chamber of Commerce for details.
