Special Issue

SPECIAL ISSUE OF 1979 TOURNAMENTS

Due to the vast overflow of 1979 tournaments that were not published during the 1979 season, the NHPA is publishing this special issue. It is

requested that all tournament promoters send in their respective results as soon as possible. Do not wait until several tournament results

have accumulated, that only creates a problem for the Editor. Remember "the deadline for

copy to send in is the 10th of the month previous to the date of issue.

AL LORD WINS NEW ENGLAND CHAMPIONSHIP-R. FORGUES NEW BOYS' CHAMP—D. MICHAUD & L. PATENEAUDE REPEAT After a nine-year drought, Maine's A1 Lord returned to the winner's circle in the New

England championships held Labor Day weekend at Heritage Recreation Center in Sutton, Massachusetts. The Lord's fourteen wins, 78.6 percent ringer average, and tournament high game of 92.3% (48 for 52), were truly records of championship calibre. Al's only loss came at the hand of defending champion Bob Domey in the final round. Upset wins by Bernard Her-furth in Round 1 and Charlie Richardson in Round 14 cost Bob any chance of repeating. Third place was captured by Norm Rioux, several times champion of this event, with a 12-3 record. Yound Kevin Hollister completed a successful year by placing fourth.

A new Boy's champion was crowned. Richard Forgues of Vermont began with a fine 81.2% game and continued undefeated, averaging 66.7%. Brian Smith finished second with 67.0%. Rich's brother Joe Forgues was third with 59.0%.

Debby Michaud, former Womens' World champion, swept six games in a double round robin to successfully defend her title. Liz Downer finished second, losing twice to Debby, but she pushed Debby to 88 shoes in the final game before succumbing 52-42. Donna McMeniman pitched her best tournament ever, 53.3%, to capture third spot.

Two-time World champion Linda Pateneaude of Maine continued her domination of the Girls' division. Janice Domey finished in runnerup spot and Brenda McNeill edged Dawna Reekie on percentage for third-place honors.

The St. Pierre company has long been one of horsehsoe pitching's most generous sponsors. The thanks of all New England pitchers is hereby expressed. Thanks to the 14 inddor horseshoe courts of Heritage, only 28 of the 172 entrants had to pitch outdoors.

SANDY BARTELL LADIES CHAP - CLARK SWAMPS JUNIORS The following article about the Pacific Northwest tournament was written by Barry Chapelle of Portland, Oregon our Northwest Regional director: "Beautiful weather and keen competition highlighted the 34th annual Pacific Northwest Open held at Yakima, Wash, on Sept. 15 and 16. With one round to go, Henry Knauft, Lowell Davis, Herb Criss and John Monasmith were tied with one loss each and were matched against each other. Knauft defeated Davis and Chriss defeated Monasmith and then Knauft defeated Criss in the playoff game to win the tournament. Vern Miller celebrated his 25th wedding an-niversary by winning Class B. Harry Lang, a 2nd year pitcher, won a very tight Class C with Chuck Ball finishing 2nd. Chuck lost three games by a total of seven points. presented with the annual "Mr. Horseshoes" award. Cletus also set a new Pacific Northwest record with Henry Knauft in the mens division when they had (7) consecutive four deads.

The annual banquet was a rousing success. The food was excellent and emcee Ellis West did a masterful job of keeping the evening rolling. Enjoyable talent was displayed by Ellis and Dorothy West, Esthel Benner, Chuck Ball and Kelly O'Brien. Several door prizes were award-ed to cap off a fun evening.

STAMINA PLAYS OFF FOR WHITMER IN SUNSHINE OPEN AT ORLANDO, NOVEMBER 3

John Rademacher the Plant City "Pro" turned in the high averae (67.8%) for Class A pit-chers at Orlando's first tournament of the new season, but doughty Duane Whitmer holding to the consistent game required to hold up a tough 7-game match, took first place with 6 wins and only 1 loss. Pete Peterson, the Orlando Club Pres. who led his fellow club members in a month-long reconstruction of the courts at Sunshine Park to get the layout ready for the 79-80 season open-ed, "It's tough to come up with a 55.5% ringer average and still finish only No. 8 in an 8-man field, but we're happy we drew such a good turn-out." Howard Lee of Bradenton took 1st place in Class B, and the first three finishers in that class all had better than 50% ringer averages. Two other classes required pitch-offs to decide winners. Mullet of Sarasota nosed out Red Benton of Plant City in Class C. George Buskey of Clearwater, returning to his old form took class D. 14 The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/Special Issue -1980 VALLEJO TURKEY SHOOT WON BY GONSALES (NO. CALIF.)

Continuing his winning formula of 75% ringers plus per game, Jesse Gonzales registered his 3rd straight No. Calif, win in the 69th tournament of the NCHPA season. No date supplied.

The 1979 season finale was well attended although many participants were somewhat short of their sleep quota having attending the annual dinner-dance the previous evening. Jesse was tough in the clutch as was Don Titcomb; both of these top ringermen advanced to the final game unbeaten, with Don a little ahead in percentage through 6 games by virtue of a 90% game! However, even with Don tossing a spectacular 78% game, he came up with only 9 points as Jesse exploded to an 88% effort to win 26-9.

Group II was won by Al Michelcic of the host Vallejo club in a playoff over Sonoma's Bob Malley, 43-37.

Jack Sorg once again showed all disbelievers that his back woes are gone,, as he registered another win in the 8-man group III configuration.

Chuck Farrell defeated Don Forbes in Group IV 37-33 in a playoff; Mike Marelli edged out Sam Garcia in Group V; Will Paddock was the Jr. winner and Sharon Paddock, 1978 State Ladies champ, was back on her game as she registered a fine 59.1% effort. The 1st and 2nd place finihsers were determined by a coin flip as darkness made it impossible to play. Yvonne Mauzey lost the flip and took home the second place trophy. Sharon had the high percentage game of 70%.

20 The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/Special Issue -1980 WYO. COWBOY OPEN LASSOED BY WETHERBEE OF COLO.

Despite a pre-tournament attack of Wyoming syndrome, not as a result of a conspiracy at the Raymond ranch, Wetherbee, Colorado, bet the odds and took first place in Men's Class A at the Cowboy Open. Wetherbee had a visit with a doctor the night before the start of the tour-nament and got the go ahead sign. It appeared Dick received no unearned wins during the con-test. Schliske, a retired rancher from Cheyenne, and Stemple, Wyo., pitched to a draw for first place with identical 8-1 records. Schliske survived the playoff. Tarket, Colo, and Matson, Wyo. both had 7-2 records in Class C. Tarket emerged as winner in the playoff. W. Smith, Wyo., undefeated in Class F at Cheyenne the previous week, repeated a winning performance by taking Class D at the tournament with a 9-1 record. E. Smith, Wyoming, extended her Cheyenne Open, no defeat record of the previous week in Class A, by an outstanding performance at the Cowboy Open.
