Off to the Races!Welcome to the track! We hope you have a wonderful time today. Whether you've come looking for beautiful horses,

great friends or a little money and luck, we have some fun facts and useful suggestions to help you cash a winning ticket!

Horse racing is similar to other professional sports in that the horses and their owners, trainers and jockeys compete for money and glory, buthorse racing offers one HUGE distinction - it is not just a spectator sport. YOU become part of the action by placing your wagers on theoutcomes of todays races. When you bet on the races, youre not playing "against the house" because unlike Vegas-style gaming, theracetrack has no stake in who wins or loses.

Placing a WagerThere are two basic approaches to wagering:

Hunch betting is perhaps the most enjoyable way for newfans to play the races with their friends. It requires no knowledgeof racing, but it does require imagination!

Handicapping involves studying the horses' previous races to predictthe likely outcome of the race at hand. This past performanceinformation, which is similar to a box score in other sports, is availablein todays race program.

$ When you're ready, consider each of the manywager types available, but our recommendationstoday will involve only the following:

Win (your horse must finish first)Show (you win if your horse finishes first,

second or third)Exacta Box (pick two or more horses that must

finish first and second in either order)

The Art of "Hunch" BetsThere are no rules - just fun! You are limited only by the depths of your own creativity.

Colors: The jockeys wear colorful shirts and caps called silks that are designed by each horses owner. This is similar tothe jerseys worn by teams in other sports. Do any of todays racing silks strike your fancy?

Numbers: Each horse is assigned the number seen on their saddlecloth. Do you have a lucky number? Whichcombination of numbers forms a date that has importance to you?

Odds: Professional handicappers examine the probability of a given entry winning by assigning odds to each horse. Doyou root for the underdog? The horse with the highest odds is considered the long shot.

What's In A Name? Horse names provide an endless source of possibilities for hunch bets! Owners draw from manysources when naming their horses, including the names of the horse's mother (dam) and father (sire). For example,"Odor in the Court" was sired by "Judge Smells" while the dam of "Prenup" was "Homewrecker." Find a name that youthink is clever or that is meaningful to you.

The Science of "Handicapped" BetsIf you don't trust that luck is on your side today, choose from therecommendations below, which are based on scientific analyses of previousraces and modeled after the methods used by top handicappers. Select the wagerthats right for you based on the amount of money youre willing to invest andthe amount of risk youre willing to take.
