The BKA, in conjunction with the Shintani Wado-kai Karate Federation, is very pleased and honoured to offer a series of clinics in the Alberta area with world-renowned Wado Bunkai Jutsu practitioner Sensei Iain Abernethy, 5th-Dan. Highlights Sensei Iain Abernethy holds the rank of 5th-Dan with both the British Combat Association (one of the world’s leading groups for close-quarter fighting) and with Karate England, the official sanctioning body for traditional karate in England. While his core style is Wado, he has expanded his study to embrace other styles of karate and has made it his life’s work to explore the original bunkai principles and messages in the core Wado katas. He is a proponent of kata-based sparring, a mode of training that seeks to apply the concepts taught in the katas in practical self-defense situations, which inevitably involve close-quarter fighting. Sensei Abernethy believes there are four stages to learning kata: 1) Learn the moves. 2) Learn the bunkai. 3) Understand the principles taught. 4) Apply the principles in combat. These stages echo Sensei Ohtsuka’s own philosophy: “It is obvious that these kata must be trained and practised sufficiently, but one must not be ‘stuck’ in them. One must withdraw from the kata to produce forms with no limits or else it becomes useless. It is important to alter the form of the trained kata without hesitation to produce countless other forms of training. Essentially, it is a habit created over long periods of training. Because it is a habit, it comes to life with no hesitation by the subconscious mind.”(Hironori Ohtsuka, Wado-Ryu Karate) What others have said: “ On behalf of the Shintani Wado-kai Karate Federation, I’m really pleased to host Sensei Iain in his third trip to Canada. His ability to interpret and convey the history and application of the fighting principles which have been left to us in the legacy of kata from the 19th Century and earlier is truly world-class. Sensei Iain’s true gift is in teaching his method for interpreting katas, so that others can begin their own journey to uncover the karate that predates the styles of today.” - Sensei James Freeman, 5th Dan, S.W.K.K.F. Why you should attend:Modern shurite-based styles of karate like Wado kai were heavily influenced by Sensei Anko Itosu and Sensei Gichin Funakoshi as a result of their efforts to introduce karate to the mainland of Japan from its roots in the Ryu Kyu Islands. In many cases, changes were required to the syllabus from what was originally taught in order to make it appropriate for use in school systems and for other cultural reasons. However, karate of the 19th century was much more about close-range combat and Te Gumi (grappling hands), including elements of Kansetsu (locking techniques), Ukemi (falling/tumbling), Tuidi (grabbing), Nage waza (Throws & Takedowns), Shime waza (Chokes and Strangles), and Ne waza (Ground Fighting). The Okinawan practice of Kakedamashi, of which all early karate masters were familiar, is based on Tegumi. The ten main Wado katas are all full of Tegumi when studied from this perspective. Karate is a holistic martial art that drew on numerous systems and covers many combative tools, ranges and concepts. This is an opportunity to train in all the aspects of karate and explore how our kata contains all the information needed for effective self-protection. Go beyond theory for hands-on practical work with a world-renowned practitioner. Learn more about Iain Abernethy at www.iainabernethy.com
