President’s Message 10th

November 2015.

Another chapter has begun in the 70 year history of the Rotary Club of Southport with the Charter of the

Rotary Satellite Club of Southport Griffith University. It was a special night and very well supported by

District Representatives, Rotarians, family and guests. As President, it was my honour to induct 15 new

members in addition to Chairman Paul Fitzmaurice several weeks ago. I am told more want to join in the

New Year. The highlight of the night for me was watching Marion Jones fight back tears as Graham was

awarded his 9th

Paul Harris Fellow.

“I am sure I speak for all those from our newly chartered club, especially those of us who attended last

night, that we are equally grateful for all that Southport Rotary members have done to establish this club

and especially to you. None of this would have happened if it had not been for your foresight,

commitment and passion to reaching this result.” Regina Tucker in response to an email from Graham.

On the 31st of October I attended the second cluster meeting for the year hosted by AG Rohan Cooper and

Glenys. These meetings are an opportunity to share ideas, projects and information. It is very useful to

know what has worked and what hasn’t in other clubs. Coomera Valley tried a mail drop to attract new

members. 15,000 brochures produced no response at all. I know other Rotary Clubs are now in the

process of talking to Bond and Southern Cross Universities to see if the Satellite Club model will be the

way to attract younger people into Rotary.

Next week Bill Connelly will be telling us about his experience as Team Leader on his recent Friendship

Exchange to Milan. Marion and Graham will be away until Monday the 23rd

of November at the National

Rotary Institute. Therefore apologies and club matters should be directed to me.

Lea Rickwood

FUNDING 36-2009-10 # INDONESIA

"Empowering Indonesian Children for a

Brighter Future" Rotary Club of Southport PO Box 84, Southport Qld 4215

November 7, 2015

NEW SPONSORS NEEDED FOR

PROJECT 36-2009-10 # INDONESIA Project 36-2009-10 # Indonesia was initiated over fifty years ago (1964) by the late Cyril Richarde, a charter member of Rotary Club of Southport (1945). Cyril, himself an orphan, visited Indonesia numerous times to establish contacts and formulate ways to assist impoverished children and orphans lacking basic funding for their education. He established a close liaison with the Salvation Army in Indonesia who manage numerous orphanages and children’s homes throughout Indonesia. They have operated the program in Indonesia from the beginning. Rotary Club of Southport resumed management of this project in March, 2014 and has introduced a number of improvements in the operation of the project, updated the database and improved communications with donors. We are continuing to seek ways to provide donors with more information and to allow them to be better connected to their sponsored child. We are compiling a gallery of photographs of the children in our database and currently have almost 30% of the children’s photos digitally stored. These are available to forward to their respective sponsors on request. Since its inception this project has assisted an estimated 2000 – 3000 students. At its peak this project provided funding for more than four hundred students per year, all from impoverished families.

Page 6: of the ROTARY CLUB OF SOUTHPORTclubrunner.blob.core.windows.net/00000007970/en-au/... · 11/17/2015  · is heartening to realise that thanks to the generosity and support of sponsors

17 November 2015 6

Sponsors donate AU$110 per child per year which goes a long way towards improving a student’s education. This is often more than the monthly earnings of many of the children’s families. Students benefit by being able to acquire school books, stationery, sometimes shoes and uniforms and other items beyond their normal resources and feel able to fit in to the school program like any other child. It is heartening to realise that thanks to the generosity and support of sponsors quite a few students have been able to continue on to higher education institutions and university, some with distinction. In the twelve months to 31 December, 2014 $29,032 was donated to this project.

Currently 275 children are sponsored by 168 sponsors. A number of our individual donors have supported this project for many years. Some are now quite elderly and it is difficult to find new ones. Following receipt of a batch of fresh applications from children needing financial assistance for their education there are approximately 50 children for whom sponsors are urgently sought. Rotary Club of Southport has entered into a Partnership Agreement with Rotary e-Club Jakarta

Gunawarman to manage Project 36-2009-10 # Indonesia. Their involvement will facilitate better surveillance and auditing processes in Indonesia, using Rotary Clubs and other networks, to ensure that children sponsored are benefiting, in compliance with the aims of the project. It is also hoped that the involvement of Rotary Clubs in Indonesia will help to expand this program into further outposts in Indonesia. We look forward to receiving a report from them soon and after reviewing the results of their inspections and recommendations we will compose a strategic plan to take this project into the future. We are conscious of the need to develop this project beyond appearing to merely provide welfare to the students we assist. We have engaged the help of both Salvation Army, Indonesia and the Rotary e-Club of Jakarta, to make this project sustainable; to create opportunities for selected students to become qualified as teachers or medical workers; and to plan an exit strategy. On this point, Salvation Army, Indonesia have indicated that they believe this project has a life of at least 15 years to run. Tony Pritchett (Manager, Project 36-2009-10 # Indonesia)

NOVEMBER IS ROTARY FOUNDATION MONTH

The Rotary Foundation transforms our gifts into projects that change lives both close at home and

around the world. As Rotary’s charity, we can tap into a global network of Rotarians who invest

their time, money and expertise into our priorities such as eradicating polio and promoting peace.

Foundation grants empower Rotarians to approach challenges such as poverty and malnutrition,

maternal and child health, illiteracy and clean water and sanitation with solutions that have

sustainability.

Strong financial oversight, a stellar charity rating and a unique funding model mean that Rotary

makes the very most of every contribution.

If you haven’t already given to The Rotary Foundation (TRF), contact treasurer Mervyn Powell.

You can give AUD$100/yr, or US$100/yr or join the Paul Harris Society by giving US$1000 /yr.

We can give and be part of Rotary’s life changing work.

Thoughts for the week.

Officer: Soldier, do you have change for a dollar?

Soldier: Sure, buddy.

Officer: That's no way to address an officer! Now let's try it again. Do you have change for a dollar?

Soldier: No, SIR

Q: How do you know if there is a fighter pilot at your party?

A: He'll tell you.

Q: What's the difference between God and fighter pilots

A: God doesn't think he's a fighter pilot.

Q: What's the difference between a fighter pilot and a jet engine?

A: A jet engine stops whining when the plane shuts down.

A Navy Chief and an Admiral were sitting in the barbershop. They were both just getting finished with

their shaves, when the barbers reached for some after-shave to slap on their faces.

The admiral shouted, "Hey, don't put that stuff on me! My wife will think I've been in a

whorehouse!"

The chief turned to his barber and said, "Go ahead and put it on. My wife doesn't know what the

inside of a whorehouse smells like."

Q: what do you call a tick on the moon? A: A luna-tick

Q:What kind of music do planets sing? A:Neptunes!

Q: What’s a light-year? A: The same as a regular year, but with less calories.

Star light, star bright

First star I see tonight

I wish I may, I wish I might.

Oh, no! It's just a satellite.

We were celebrating Galileo's birthday. The previous Friday I had given an hour long

lecture on computing angular distances using star charts of the Mercator style. After the

class sang Happy Birthday in Italian, I asked the following: "All right, who here can tell me

the distance from Betelgeuse to Procyon using your standard chart?" A hand shot up

immediately and my chest swelled with pride. They had gotten it, I thought. "About an inch

and a half," came the response

Living on Earth may be expensive, but it includes an annual free trip around the Sun.

Q: What is more useful: the sun or the moon?

A: The moon, because the moon shines at night when you want the light, whereas the sun

shines during the day when you don't need it.
