On this secular Labor Day weekend, we begin to hear God’s divine word from the

Letter of James for the second reading the next few weeks. Today’s passage

reminds to “…[b]e doers of the word and not hearers only, deluding yourselves…”

We all can easily have nice spiritual thoughts or intellectually agree with many

teachings of the church, but unless our faith is put into action, then we are falling

into the same delusion about which St. James warns us. For example, if we come

to Mass and don’t have an sense of something either we need to do or stop

doing or continue to do in order to activate something God has communicated

to us during the Eucharist, then we are either not paying enough attention to

what God is trying to say to our hearts or are blocked in some way into putting his

word into action. Recall that the original purpose of Labor Day was to

acknowledge the dignity of work, especially those workers whose jobs demand a

fair wage, safe conditions, and humane treatment. But regardless of whether or

not we are employed for pay, we all labor in different ways to put our faith into

motion. More than a weekend with an extra day off, perhaps this Labor Day of

2018 can remind us that doing nothing explicit for Christ and the church is really

not an option for a Catholic.

En este fin de semana secular del Día del Trabajador, comenzamos a escuchar la

palabra divina de Dios de la Carta de Santiago para la segunda lectura en las

próximas semanas. El pasaje de hoy nos dice, “Pongan en práctica esa palabra

y no se limiten a escucharla, engañándose a ustedes mismos.” Todos podemos

tener buenos pensamientos espirituales o estar de acuerdo intelectualmente con

muchas enseñanzas de la iglesia, pero a menos que nuestra fe sea puesta en

acción, entonces caemos en el mismo engaño acerca del cual Santiago nos

advierte. Por ejemplo, si venimos a Misa y no tenemos un sentido de algo que

debemos hacer o dejar de hacer o continuar haciendo para activar algo que

Dios nos ha comunicado durante la Eucaristía, entonces no estamos pagando lo

suficiente atención a lo que Dios está tratando de decirle a nuestros corazones o

está bloqueado de alguna manera para poner su palabra en acción. Recuerde

que el propósito original del Día del Trabajo fue reconocer la dignidad del

trabajo, especialmente aquellos trabajadores cuyos trabajos demandan un

salario justo, condiciones seguras y un trato humano. Pero independientemente

de si somos empleados por un salario, todos trabajamos de diferentes maneras

para poner nuestra fe en movimiento. Más que un fin de semana con un día libre

adicional, quizás este Día del Trabajador del 2018 pueda recordarnos que no

hacer nada explícito por Cristo y la iglesia realmente no es una opción para un

católico.

St. Joseph will kick off the 2018 Fruitful Harvest biennial campaign entitled “Walking

Together in the Light of Christ” this coming October. During the latter part of

September, all parish members will receive a letter from Bishop Timothy Doherty

mailed directly to your home. With this letter you will receive a pledge card and

return envelope. Prayerfully begin now to consider your pledge for this appeal.

LLAMDA DEL OBISPO 2018

San José iniciará la campaña bienal de la llamada del obispo del 2018 titulada

“Caminando Juntos en la Luz de Cristo” este próximo octubre. Durante la última

FAITH FORMATION SUNDAYS

September 9 & 16 : All youth K-12 will learn about God’s love and goodness that

surrounds us and others using the Circle of Grace curriculum. This program

highlights God's grace around all of us and his desire for a safe environment for us.

HAITI SISTER PARISH SCHOOL BEGINS

This Monday, Sept. 3, our sister parish of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception

begins their first school year with students in their pre-Kindergarten class. Parents

have been asked for $780 annual tuition payable in installments with scholarships

available. Fr. Raphael has calculated the school needing $1330 each month to

pay for the salaries of a director, accountant, secretary, teacher, aide, and

security guards. Additional donations will cover the difference. More info on the

ESCUELA PARROQUIAL EN HAITI COMENZA

Este lunes, el 3 de sept., nuestra parroquia hermana de Nuestra Señora de la

Inmaculada Concepción empieza su primera año escolar con estudiantes en una

clase de pre-Kinder. Padres han pedido una matrícula de $780 cada año en

pagos con becas disponibles por necesitad económica. Padre Rafael ha

calculado la escuela necesitando $1330 cada mes para pagar los sueldos de un

director, contador, secretaria, profesor, ayudante, y guardianes de seguridad.
