Cheap Thrills

Denise Deen has been finding quite a few Breyer models at various

antique shops and swapmeets. For $15 or less a piece, she’s

gotten a woodgrain Clydesdale stallion, the Fighting Stallion in

glossy appaloosa and palomino as well as a matt palomino the Mus—

- tang in glossy alabaster and appaloosa, the 5-Gaiter in alabaster

and tan palomino (Gale: as opposed to the pumpkin palomino——yes,

really), and the red roan Running Mare and Scratching and Lying

Down Foals. For less than $5 she added a German Shepard and

Bloodhound. Now she wants to know, ‘Where are those Decorators?’

Our northern subscribers have also been finding lots of “Cheap

Thrills!” Karen Caidwell of Washington recently hit a bonanza

load at a local garage sale. For $10 each C!) she took home a

glossy dapple grey Belgian, albino 5-Gaiter, bay stretched Morgan

w/star, two glossy dapple grey Clydesdale Stallions, two glossy

bay Clydesdale Stallions w/eyewhites, two Balking Mules, glossy

alabaster Mustang w/red eyes and a grey Bucking Bronco. If these

weren’t enough, she hit another garage sale during the summer and

came away with another glossy bay Clydesdale Stallion, palomino

5—Gaiter, a double-eyed glossy Misty (Gale: she mentioned an

Indian Pony, too, but forgot to say which one), glossy palomino

Fighting Stallion, a dark woodgrain Fighting Stallion, a bay

bucking Bronco, an old black stretched Morgan w/eyewhites, plus a

few woodgrain Hartlands all priced between $5 to $10. (Gale: WOW!

Karen’s right——not all the gold is in California!)

Michele Grant from Canada called to inquire about the Beswick

black Shire #818 I mentioned in the last issue. We swopped

Beswick stories and she told me how, on the way to buy diapers

awhile ago, she stopped off at a antique show and came across a

table full of Beswicks! A chestnut Shetland (probably #1033) and

the hard to find Grazing Draft Mare (#1050) in the even harder to

find black dapple grey went home with her. She used the shetland

to trade for the Beswick Zebra but won’t part with the Grazing

Mare as she collects Drafts. I told her of my recent purchases

of 12 black dapple Beswicks: two adults (#‘s 855 & 976), the

large shire foal (#1051) and nine other foals. One turned out to

be a duplicate which sold as soon as I mentioned it to another

collector. What I especially like about this color is the

detailing and shading that went into them. A black dapple Bes—

wick is the old version of dapple grey. It differs from the

current, much lighter, dapple grey like night and day.

_______

— Part II

A review of Animals in Motion, by Eadweard Muybridge,

edited by Lewis S. Brown (New York: Dover Publications, Inc., 1957)

In Part I of this review I told how the 19th—century English photographer

and inventor Eadweard Muybridge (ED-ward MY-bridge) came to produce his

monumental work, Animal Locomotion, which consists of 781 photographic plates

showing all manner of creatures——horses, elk, sows, people, ostriches, gnus, and

many others——in all manner of motion. That work was published in 1887. In 1957

the Dover Publications company put out a book called Animals in Motion, which

reproduces most of the animal plates——nearly half of which are of horses——from

the earlier work. The Dover edition also includes Muybridge’s essay “Analysis of

Animal Locomotion.”As I said last time, any model collector fed up with free-form fancy

prancers will want a copy of Animals in Motion. It offers page after page of

photo sequences showing live horses in every phase of the natural gaits and some

less—than—natural activities too——I refer the reader not only to plates such as

“Johnson Hauling, Head Being Pulled” and “Pandora Jumping a Hurdle” (Pandora also

demonstrates how to take off about a mile to soon) but also to plates such as

“Lotta Rolling a Box” and “Hornet Rocking.” When I got my copy of Animals in

Motion I went into a frenzy of model-gait-analysis, holding Breyer after Hartland

after Breyer up to Muybridge’s stills to see which models captured anything like

real moments of horse travel. (I’ll share some of my findings below.)That frenzy followed an initial frenzy of real-beast-gait-analysis, which

involves breaking one’s eyeballs on sequence after sequence of photos. One firstcarefully picks out the changes in leg position from one photo to the next, thensweeps one’s eyes quickly over the whole sequence to get the motion. (Thoughguaranteed to cause a savage headache, this method is preferable to cutting thepictures out and making them into a flip-book.) The sequences of buffalos, sloths, mastiffs, and what—have—you’s are as captivating as those of horses. There’s a plate labeled “Adjutant in a Flying Run,” which shows not a busyofficer of the U.S. Air Force but a large, pelican-like bird rushing none toogracefully. A plate labeled “Ruth Being Refractory” gives two perspectives on amule dumping her rider, a Dickensian fellow in top hat and baggy overcoat. Themost magical plate of all, “Doe Galloping and Fawn Jumping,” shows a littlespeckled fawn as she launches herself into orbit above her fleeing mother; she’sairborne and still rising for fully four frames, at which point the sequenceends. In his discussion of this plate Muybridge comments, “The fawn in themeanwhile was soaring aloft, nor did it descend until a considerable distance

beyond where we leave it in [frame) l2.1

In his essay “Analysis of Animal Locomotion,” Muybridge reports his findingthat quadrupeds use eight distinct gaits, or, as he calls them, “regular systemsof progressive motion” (p. 26). They are the walk, the amble, the trot, the pace(which Muybridge prefers to call the rack), the canter, the ricochet, and twoforms of gallop: the transverse gallop and the rotatory gallop. Of these eight, horses use all but the rotatory gallop and the ricochet.

Don’t be alarmed if you consider yourself an expert on animal gaits butnever heard of the “ricochet”; this is Muybridge’s own coinage for what kangaroosdo. For reasons that he explains, but that obviously didn’t convince anyone, hethought “bounding,” “hopping,” and “jumping” were inapt names for the regularsystem of progressive roo-motion. (It may be worth noting that The New Columbia
