“Students today are raised on technology. The way students interact, learn and share is changing - education needs to adapt to those changes. Continued focus on eliminating barriers to education by leveraging technology and the network will help bridge the digital divide and deliver world-class education to everyone. Today’s students are the leaders of tomorrow and it is our duty to provide the education they need to shape the future.”

What is a Community Process for the creation of Open Educational Resources (OERs)?

Community: A group of individuals with common self-interest sharing an

environment.

Process: A method and sequence

of steps for achieving an outcome

Educational Resources: Learning Objects, Activities, Lesson Plans, Video,

Audio, Documents, Source and Reference Material, Textbooks, Tutorials,

Data, or any other digital assets useful for teaching and learning.

Open: Means both Open Access (free to use) and Open Source (able to be

modified and redistributed.)

Value of OER• Community developed vs. Silo developed

• Resources are modifiable and customizable (Dynamic vs. static content)

• Modular and remixable

• Investment in Human Capital beyond the IP of the instructional materials

• Teachers develop a deeper understanding of subject matter when they participate in curriculum selection, sequencing and improvement • Build communities of practice to support effective instructional strategies and identify and share best practices.

• Enabled transition to fully digital materials

• Facilitates differentiation of instruction, accessibility and UDL

• Fosters creativity an exploration of new methods and practices

Professional Development Workshops INTRODUCTION TO OPEN EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES (OERS)

During this half-day workshop covering Open Educational Resources (OERs) as alternatives to textbooks for K-12 teachers, participants will learn how OER broaden the use of alternatives to textbooks while maintaining instructional quality, and lowers costs.

INTRODUCTION TO DIGITAL COPYRIGHTS

In this half-day session, participants will be introduced to various aspects of digital copyrights, including free models of distribution, types of licenses, the importance of applying digital copyrights, and how to correctly attribute a digitally licensed work.

USING CURRIKI.ORG AND OERS TO ENHANCE CURRICULUM DESIGN

This half-day workshop is designed for teachers who want to learn how to use open educational resources to enhance their classroom curriculum and to collaborate with other teachers. At the end of the workshop each participant will have created a unit(s) of study. Participants will also learn how they can contribute to the Curriki repository.

Page 31: OER in Practice: Changing the Equation, an Overview of Curriki’s Free and Professional Services Joshua Marks CTO, Curriki June 13, 2011.

Professional Development Workshops PUBLISHING OPEN EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES (OERS) ON CURRIKI

During this half-day workshop participants will learn how to publish a variety of instructional materials and media into the Curriki repository: an instructional video, a lesson plan written in text, a recording of a lecture, an interactive learning exercise designed in Flash, a Zip archive containing an entire course's reference material, and more. Each participant will create a personal collection of resources from their published material.

COLLABORATION WITH CURRIKI GROUPS

During this half-day workshop we will provide a basic overview about using group tools on Curriki. Currently, dozens of organizations, schools, and districts are using groups on Curriki to communicate, collaborate, share curricula, and more. People using groups on Curriki range from educators undertaking formal curriculum and professional development efforts to more informal groups of interest or practice. Participants will create new groups invite others to their groups add curriculum and resources to their groups, manage a discussion, and join the groups that others have created.

CURRIKI ADVANCED TOPICS

This half-day workshop will introduce teachers to the use of Curriki for selecting and creating curricula from the Curriki Open Educational Resources (OER) and other OER resources. Participants will learn how to find, edit and "mix and remix" content. At the end of the workshop each participant will have created a unit(s) of study. The workshop will provide instruction for building customized content using the Curriki platform and tools.
