We hope the New Year has got off to a good start for you. At our Suffolk HQ we’ve had a busy start to 2015, particularly making products to replenish stocks after the festive rush. Gentle Herb Shampoo has once again been in hot demand, helped by a fantastic award from the prestigious Observatoire des Cosmétiques in France for ‘best sensitive scalp shampoo’ in its 2015 ‘Guide to the Best Cosmetics’. We were also proud that our Lemon & Tea Tree Facial Wash won best combination/oily skin cleanser against well-known international brands.

Abi (Margaret’s daughter) won a more unusual prize for Mum&Working Business Parent of the Year (see our blog for Abi’s thoughts on the need for fl exible working for parents) and we again featured in the Top 25 of the Who’s Who of Natural Beauty.

We’ve also had some super press coverage. Suffolk magazine wrote a lovely feature on us in December. The latest edition of Eating & Living Gluten Free recommended Odylique in an article on gluten-free skincare, Psychologies magazine is about to feature Repair Lotion, and Lemon Butter Hand Smoothie has a glowing write-up in Health & Fitness magazine. The Lemon Butter Hand Smoothie is generating quite a buzz – we’ve received excellent comments from customers at our store tester days and bloggers on both sides of the Atlantic have been writing great reviews.

Hand Cream is certainly something we’re relying on at this chilly time of year. The only skincare I have found to calm my sensitive winter skin! Although my combination skin usually behaves itself, in winter it gets very sensitive, fl aky and dry with sometimes small patches of eczema, especially on the cheeks. I have tried many organic products for YEARS and have never found anything to calm it down. Until now! I switched my facial skincare over to Odylique a few weeks ago and the fl akiness has almost completely gone and the patch of eczema is disappearing! I use the rose moisturiser (I like the new anti-ageing element, as I’m 34!) and the silk touch cleanser. Thank you Odylique! :)

Winter cold, blustery March winds and changeable spring weather can

wreak havoc on your skin. Cold, dry air draws out valuable moisture and your skin’s own natural sebum production is already at its lowest ebb. Exposed areas like the lips, face and hands are likely to be most affected, leaving skin taut, uncomfortable and rough to the touch.

Harsh detergents and other irritants that damage the skin’s moisture barrier can play a role in skin dehydration at any time of year, as can problems such as eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis.

The good news is that most dry skin conditions are relatively easy to overcome if given the right care at the right time.

• Gentle exfoliation removes dead skin cells, but should be done carefully or not at all on very sensitive skin in winter to avoid leaving the skin open to attack from cold air and toxins.

• Avoid really hot water for bathing, showering or washing your hands – it can be drying.

• Choose a mild soap or bodywash based on gentle plant oils. They may lather slightly less than sulphate based ones but they clean effectively. Copious bubbles don’t always equate to mildness and may remove all your skin’s precious oils.

• Calming Rose Super Tonic can also help re-establish the skin’s acid mantle (and is great as a simple moisturiser when the weather gets warmer).

2. Moisturize & protectA

im to apply just enough moisturizer that is fully absorbed within a few minutes

and leaves the skin comfortable yet non-greasy.

If your moisturizer is too rich or applied too generously, the sebaceous glands can become ‘lazy’

and not produce enough of their own lubricant (sebum). It can also lead to enlarged pores. Likewise, apply moisturizer only to the drier areas of combination skin.

If skin is especially dry, reapply later or at night if needed and always before exposure to cold weather.

It’s particularly benefi cial to moisturize just after a shower or bath (especially if using a balm) when the skin is warm, damp and receptive.

As we get towards spring, the warmer weather tends to increase cell turnover, so you might fi nd you’ll need less, or a lighter, moisturizer.

A little zing while waiting for Spring

The twinkling lights are down, the skies are grey – the post-festive period until the fi rst

burst of spring can be a low point of the year for us all. But there are steps you can take to beat the winter blues.

At this time of year we spend a lot of time indoors and daylight hours are short, so there is limited natural light reaching our brain. This is believed to increase melatonin levels and make us feel more lethargic and low. So one of the best solutions to the winter blues is simply to leave your house or offi ce at lunchtime and take an energising

walk, or if you can’t get out, sit as close as possible to natural light during the day.

Nature – of course! – has a remedy or two to brighten us up. One answer is in seasonal fruits – particularly the citrus family.

The refreshing zestiness from peeling and eating oranges, clementines, lemons and limes can itself lift body and soul.

It’s always best to opt for healthy fruit and raw veg as an energising tonic, but if you desperately need the comfort of sugar or carbs, try

using lemon, oranges and limes in cooking, including over those pancakes on Shrove Tuesday!

Classic aromatherapy principles explain how citrus essential oils work particularly well to lift the spirits. Spotlight on Sea Buckthorn

Margaret, Odylique’s founder, explains why the skin benefi ts of sea

buckthorn make it one of her favourite ingredients:

Its name sounds prickly, but sea buckthorn is a wonder plant that can make your skin soft and smooth. ‘Sea’ is also slightly a misnoma – its alternative name of ‘sandthorn’ better describes its preference for sandy soil in its native Europe (where ours comes from) and Asia.

The bright orange and highly nutritious berries of the buckthorn bush are packed with antioxidant vitamins A (beta-carotene), B, C & E (tocopherols).

The pulp and seeds of the berry yield extracts with differing but equally valuable skin-caring properties. With an incredible assortment of phytosterols and essential fatty acids, the fruit is unique in being nature’s rare and richest source of Omega 7 (palmitoleic acid). This aids cell renewal as well as collagen and elastin production to keep the skin fi rm, smooth and supple, but as we age our skin’s own production of omega 7 declines.
