That sinking feelingIn the wake of the Costa Concordia disaster is Francesco Schettino now Captain Scapegoat?

COMMENT

Captain Francesco Schettino was at the helm of the Costa Concordia when the ship hit rocks and sank in 2012, killing 32 people and injuring another 150 passengers

and crew. Accused of taking the liner too close to the shore and then abandoning ship with passengers and crew still on board he has been found guilty, at the court in the city of Grosseto, of manslaughter and sentenced to 16 years in prison.

Italy’s Ministry of Infrastructures and Transports has found that: “The ship was sailing too close to the coastline, in a poorly lit shore area, under the Master’s command who had planned to pass at an unsafe distance at night time and at high speed (15.5 kts).”

The 54-year-old is appealing against the verdict with his arguing that it was a collective failure of the ship’s crew and that others particularly the ship’s shore based managers should share some of the blame for the disaster. When denying the charges Schettino said he was being made a scapegoat.

Now Salty Seadog is never going to side with the Master and try and make light of what was a truly tragic incident. Nor is he going to suggest that the sentence is too harsh. In fact Salty Seadog believes the man deserves at least that for being so un-seamanlike as to trip and fall accidentally into a waiting lifeboat during the height of the incident!

But Salty Seadog does question whether it is right that the owners and operators of this ship, and many more, should get away with it Scott free. Lawyers for the plaintiffs have said they are pleased with Schettino’s conviction, but some have complained to the court that no one from the cruise company’s upper management was ever charged with a crime, and Salty suggests they may have a point.

were all convicted on differing charges under a plea bargain deal

in which none has served prison time. To date no one from the cruise company’s upper management has ever been charged with a crime. Is that fair?

Costa Crociere S.p.A. trading as Costa Cruises is based in Genoa, Italy, and in 2000 was acquired by Carnival Corporation. The Italian division is now one of eleven cruise ship brands operated by Carnival. Carnival are far from being rank amateurs at the cruise ship business they are, on the contrary, very much masters of their trade and run their ships very well indeed, laying down instructions on how each and every incident should be handled. When they spot a practice they dislike they issue comprehensive easy to follow instructions on how the matter may be handled more to their liking.

So that begs the question why did they not ban the practice of sailing so close to the rock ringed island of Giglio. Giving evidence at the trial Captain Schettino told the court that Costa Cruises managers had granted him permission to perform a sail-past on 13 January. On 14 August 2011, the ship had again taken a similar sail-past route, and that sail-past was also approved by Costa Cruises to coincide with a festival that was taking place on the island.

There are as many similarities between a cruise liner and a superyacht as there are differences. This means that in many incidences, the same operating rules, conditions and practises apply. Schettino clearly broke ISPS regulations by inviting the maître d’hôtel of the ship, who is from the island, to the ship’s bridge to view the island during the sail-past. Where does this leave the yacht Captain when charter guests want to visit the bridge as the yacht passes through say, the Corinth Canal?

in a romantic relationship with the Captain and was also on the bridge. Will that mean soon that the Chief Stew who happens to be the Captain’s wife cannot join him on the bridge at times?

SKINT CREW Due to lack of forethought and savings many crew have missed out this season because they can’t aff ord to do their OOW courses or Engineering modules. It’s competitive out there and even some deck jobs are looking for guys and girls who have started their OOWs.

ACCOMMODATION SHORTAGE At the start of the season there seems to be heaps of crew looking for a bed all over the Med. Is there more crew looking for that fi rst step onboard? Is there a shortage of decent accommodation?

SOCIAL MEDIA PICS Come on guys, get it into your heads. If you’re still posting drunken half naked shots of you and your ‘mates’ on facebook or any other social network, please remember that every recruitment company and Captain is also looking at the very same page.

FAUX RECRUITMENT COMPANIES I guess it can be expected this time of year that these scammers are re-appearing. But to be honest, do your own homework guys, don’t send anyone money especially if they have a gmail.com email address!

TATTOO COVER UP MAKE UP Tats are not cool when visible in a yacht uniform… and could stop you getting your dream job. Coverderm and Dermablend can hide them. Lasting for 24 hours, waterproof, and they don’t rub off on expensive furnishings!

SANTA CATALINA IN PALMA DE MALLORCA Lots of hip bars, hangouts and restaurants, plus new cafés and local businesses have opened up over the past year. All that on top of the awesome original businesses and markets have made this cool old town very chic.

ETOs There seems to be a shortage of IT experts on the Med this season. With superyachts getting larger and the whole comms and AV system becoming more and more elaborate, this department is under more scrutiny. Get your CoC and get on rotation.

SAVING OUR OCEANS As soon as we all realise that this is where we earn our living the better. The pollution of our oceans is not decreasing, and we all need to get behind the various causes protecting our oceans.

Abaia is described in Melanesian mythology as a large eel-like monster that lives in the bottom of freshwater lakes in the Fiji, Solomon and Vanuatu Islands. The Abaia is said to consider all creatures in the lake its children and protects them furiously. It has been suggested that the Abaia legend may have stemmed from encounters with an actual undiscovered species of giant eel.

Be our guestJoey Meen looks at the run away success

of the PYA GUEST programme

MY OPINION

I am writing this following yet another trip to audit yet another course for the Interior crew of the Superyacht Industry; yup a PYA GUEST (intermediate level II) course….. (Italy!)….It

is two years since the PYA GUEST programme has been fully functional and running, and as we near the 3000 mark for the

Part of this promotion included an eye opening GUEST Awareness workshop for heads of industry earlier this year (the guest list included well established and renowned Charter Brokers, Crew Agents, Managers and owners’ representatives), who attended

training GUEST offers. This event was run by a number of our wonderful and passionate GUEST Training Providers, including Interior Yacht Services, Interior Training Academy, The Crew Academy, Bluewater and Fine Wine Works; and was sponsored by MYBA who have played an active and positive role in pushing the work that PYA does, including the GUEST training.

The reaction from the 24 heads of industry who attended this event was phenomenal. I am not sure what I personally

very people who have direct links to owners, charter guests and other decision makers have embraced their responsibility to help provide a service they are “selling” to owners and charter guests.

A yacht owner asked me why we (the yachting sector) dare

to spend so much money on the yacht build, interior design, furnishings, boat shows, glossy brochures and all, only to let ourselves down with the end product. If the crew don’t have

all tools (required level of training) to follow up with the big performance, then what’s the point?

Please do not think for one moment I am blaming the interior crew…without whom we would never have had the yachting

any “required level of training” prior to being employed. However we have reached a point of no return, and with the ever growing

I blame the yachting sector in general (and that includes the PYA), as we have all been rather slow in taking the initiative and

and as the years have raced past with the Deck and Engineers getting all the attention, the interior department (front line to the whole show) has been rather forgotten. However the PYA GUEST programme seems to be doing the trick; and following the

and with the hardest work completed now that the programme is well ensconced, the task ahead is to help bring an awareness of the value of the courses to both the crew themselves as well as the decision echelons of our sector, for the good of the owners and guests.

CELEBRITY

The man credited with how the sport is marketed globally has brought more commercial interest to F1 than anyone in its illustrious history, and has accumulated an

estimated net worth of almost $4 billion along the way. This wealth, espoused with a love for sailing, led to Bernie acquiring his own superyacht; and what a vessel it is.

decade ago at Proteksan Turquoise Yachts’ shipyard, was built from steel and aluminium, with a gross tonnage of 860. It was designed by Osman Tanju Kalaycioglu and Celeste Dell’Anna of Luca Dini design. The yacht’s production by A.M.Y Yachts was part of a joint venture between CNL and T.Mariotti of Genoa, and set Ecclestone back a whopping $150 million. The Italian designers have predictably not skimped on style; the yacht, complete with 10 metre beam, boasts accommodation for

separate living quarters for a crew of up to 12 people. Add that to the private owner’s balcony which retracts on command,

to boot and its own Jacuzzi pool, and you have quite the craft.

The Sea Force One yacht is named Petara, after Ecclestone’s beloved daughters Petra and Tamara, who have made their own names in the world of celebrity over the years. Ecclestone is a proud father, although admits time spent in the paddock and pit areas at Formula One races the world over have left him wishing he had spent more time with the pair. “I didn’t devote as much time to them as I would have liked,” he says. “I never neglected my daughters, quite the opposite, but I suppose I could have and should have spent more time with them.” He has no regrets, however, when it comes to his dedication to changing the way Formula One markets itself though, saying “This is what I needed to do with my life. But when your daughters are no longer there for you to look after, you always think about how you could have done things a bit differently.”

Petra and Tamara, who are often seen partying on the superyacht off the coast of Monaco, have seemingly inherited their father’s sense of entrepreneurial nous; a streak that Ecclestone admits has made parenthood a lot easier on him. “I let them do their own thing,” he says. “Overall they’ve made some very good investments and I don’t worry that they can’t manage on their own. They don’t make decisions casually.” The two have come under some harsh criticism from the press for their party girl image. Bernie realises this is part and parcel of being his daughter: “When it’s necessary I will defend them,” he says. “They’re in the public eye and because of their name and so on they are going to pay a price for that. Doing television also

enough to be able to handle things.” As well as his business savvy, Petra and Tamara have also inherited Bernie’s thick skin. “They have strong personalities. [As a father] I’m close to them but they don’t really need me to advise them on how to manage their lives and they don’t ask me to do that” he reveals

of the art entertainment system, few could blame the sisters for wanting to make the most of the boat in one of the most beautiful corners of the ocean.

Petara’s engines, two diesel Caterpillar Inc Model 3516Bs, with twin screw propulsion, is something of a beast, but while Ecclestone has never taken the wheel in his native sport of F1, he is no stranger to speed. His legacy in Formula One is unmatched in terms of marketing and commercial interest, but he speaks about it in somewhat modest and realistic terms. “All sports have developed and I took some charge of things because they needed to be done and if it hadn’t been me someone else would probably have brought Formula One forward,” he muses. “What we did was to make the necessary changes and I’m happy to have been part of that process.”

It was a lengthy process turning the amateurish presentation of F1 into the polished product it is today. “It was a case of looking at things which needed to be improved,” Ecclestone

but I knew what had to be changed for the sake of the sport and making it a better product.” He credits this approach with his success in heading up the brand as a whole: “That kind of thinking probably helped me when I began managing things and was able to make the changes we all knew had to be made.

and places like Singapore.”

A renowned dealmaker, Ecclestone is responsible for negotiating the current Concorde Agreement among the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) and the Formula One Administration which dictates how revenues and prize money is split, and the terms by which races are contested. He describes his skill as a negotiator, saying “it’s like being a singer or an artist. You’re born with certain gifts and you use them as best you can in life.”

It has been a steep learning curve for Bernie, who has been the brains behind some of F1’s most lucrative television contracts. “You begin to learn and recognise that you have certain skills and aptitudes that you apply, then use them to carry you forward. I don’t have any talent as an artist but I do have an awareness for business and what you need to bring to that world. It helps to know what you’re good at.”

At the ripe old age of 85, he shows no signs of slowing down. “I don’t think I will ever need to hand over my job to someone

NEW LAUNCH

Asya

Launched recently and now undergoing her maiden voyage Asya is the second in the restyled 47m class, a breed of yachts from Heesen whose

exterior is designed by Frank Laupman of Omega Architects. His work combines elegant traditional

by the continuous glass windows and matching black paintwork on the main deck and upper decks.

the housing of the rescue tender in an enclosed bay in front of the wheelhouse, no mean feat considering the yacht is under the 500GT threshold. This additional touch of grace means the lines of the forward section of the iconic yacht now look smooth and clean. Another important design change concerns the crew accommodation, which complies with LY3 regulations.Accommodation below decks consists of a full-beam

master suite, two double cabins, two twin cabins each with one pullman bed.

Simplicity as the ultimate form of sophistication is the guiding principle of the interior design. Her stylish interior from the London based and award winning studio Bannenberg & Rowell has a distinctly Far Eastern, restful feel, inspired by the designs of Dieter Rams, Frank Lloyd-Wright and Tadao Ando. The sea trials took place in the North Sea in relatively calm conditions, with average wave heights of 0.5m and south easterly winds from 4 to 16 knots max. Powered by two MTU8V 4000 M63 diesel engines, Asya’s well engineered steel hull with bulbous bow provided smooth passage and exceeded the contractual speed by 0.8 knots. At her cruising speed (12 knots) she has a range of 4,000 nautical miles.

Porto Montenegro Marina at Tivat is the sparkling new luxe-luxe marina that has been launching different phases in its development over several years. It has 184 secure berths from 12-150m and in yet another future phase will accommodate 460 more berths, with 130 dedicated to

superyachts. The second ‘phase’ of Marina Porto Montenegro marks the opening of the Hotel Regent Porto Montenegro and the residence Ksenija is due to be ready

Captain Raki also has a soft spot for MC Marina Budva and he believes it to be the most scenic Montenegrin marina. It is situated in the central part of the coastline in Budva (42º 16’ N, 18º50’ E). Berth max is 40 m and is an ancient 3500 year old seaside town. Dukley Marina at Budva has recently been hoicked up into The Camper and Nicholsons’ 1782 Club and is shortly due a 450million euro makeover. Best beaches include: Raljicina plaza,

Milocer and Jaz. There’s a 5-star luxury spa resort, the Aman, at Sveti Stefan not far from Budva and dancing ‘til dawn at the Top Hill Club. Marina Bar serves yachts up to 25m and the town boasts 230 days of sunshine. The marina is close to the town beach and local restaurants, bars and a hotel. As well as the above, DRM Maritime Services suggest visits to: Njegusi, Centinje, Lovcen, all inland towns.

In his time Captain Nikos Politis has been a Master of cargo ships and tankers, a yacht owner, a yacht charterer and also founded the Alpha Marine Group, the yacht agency service. His favourite cruising grounds are in the Cyclades where an itinerary really has to cover these places: Mykonos; a cosmopolitan island with a great nightlife, boutiques and plenty of restaurants. Then Delos: the birthplace of Apollo, an unspoilt haven dotted with historical landmarks and archaeological sites. Ideally, according to Nikos, you then cruise onto Mylos, home of the great underground Milos catacombs. Finally, he recommends dropping anchor at Serifos, quiet, low-key and very Greek!

The company offers luxury transfers to clients and guests, especially in clubby Mykonos and Athens and reports no changes to cruising regulations since last year.

Naftilos Marine and Yachting services (established in 2011) also has decades of yacht experience bagged up between the 8 members of the team and the 20 odd associates around Greece. Shaun Holman proposes two itineraries.

Lefkas (via Skorpios), Ithaki (Kioni/Vathi), Kefallonia (Fiskardo, Sami), Sakynthos (Navagio, Magana, Main Port) and Patra.

Another great cruise starts in Piraeus (Athens) and goes on to Kea (via Cape Sounio), Mykonos, Paros, Santorini, Folegandros, Mylos, Sifnos and back again to Piraeus. Shaun’s hit list also includes: Sundowners in Santorini, swimming in the waters of Shipwreck Bay, Zakynthos island, Mykonos

wander around Corfu old town.

He adds; ’We look forward to offering clients our dedicated hands-on service as well as arranging cultural trips, suggesting locations and helping them to enjoy the

Dave Stanley and Dina Street are the core of Southern Cross Blue Cruising, offering charters of traditional gulets and bareboats in Turkey and yacht agency services. Their sister company Bodrum Yacht Services operates brokerage ad maintenance services.

One of Dina’s favourite cruising grounds is the Gulf of Gökova. Blue cruise is the term used to describe the routes taken by indigenous wooden motor sailors along the turquoise coast of Turkey. Explains Dina; ’The original Blue Cruise was founded by Cevat Sakir Kabaaof Halicarnassus. Exiled to Bodrum from Istanbul for political dissent, he fell in love with the town and its people. He brought with him a wealth of city knowledge, including botany, and planted many of the beautiful tall palm trees which now line Bodrum harbour’.

At the end of the summer season when sponge divers returned from the Mediterranean,

it was tradition to sail through the Gulf of Gökova, and Cevat Sakir joined these sponge divers on their journeys. Dina explains the Gulf has not changed much since the days when Cevat Sakir sailed in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, with only a couple of little villages and no major modern developments along its shores. ‘For a real step back in time,

cruise in nature. It’s also ideal for sailing, as there is a gentle breeze which picks up in the early afternoon and dies down again in the evening’. Another itinerary Dina loves is from Bodrum to Göcek. ‘When we’re feeling like some action, this stretch of coastline is our favourite. There is a great mix of antiquities (Knidos), towns (Datça), beautiful anchorages (Serçe), land excursions (Dalyan river delta), natural wildlife (Iztuzu beach with its Caretta Caretta turtles) and a possible side trip to the Greek Island of Symi. The area around Göcek is also stunning with literally hundreds of anchorages to choose from. Göcek town is charming and has one

a port can offer’.

Southern Cross Blue Cruising now offer four different board options on their gulet and bareboats: a seafood menu which offers ocean catch during the week, as well as jumbo prawns and grouper; A Mediterranean menu which features traditional Aegean mezes, as well as two seafood meals. Or, a half board option for guests who wish to eat off the yacht once per day. ‘Lastly, for our full organic menu we source the

organic suppliers, including chicken, eggs, vegetables, milk, cheese and local grass fed cows and lamb.

Canyoning

Canyoning through Nevidio Canyon, near Durmitor National Park, is reserved for the serious adventurer to test their nerve. The experience takes you swimming, jumping and navigating through the canyon and its system of rapids and waterfalls. The name Nevidio translates as ‘invisible’, and is a reference to the enclosed environment of the gorge, which at some points through its 3.5km length is less than 2m wide. Discovered in 1965, the canyon is now a serious destination for thrill seekers with the safest months being July and August.

Skiing

Skiing attracts a huge number of tourists during the winter months. Ski centres in Zabljak and Kolasin, located in the foothills of the Durmitor and Bjelasica Mountains are covered with snow for 120 days per year. The popular Kolasin Ski Resort is easily accessed being only a 3 hour drive from the coast, and offers excellent ski hotels and spa resorts that are well worth the visit.

Rafting

Rafting on Tara River, offers the very best views of the Tara

deepest river canyon in Europe cutting through Durmitor National Park in Montenegro’s mountainous north. The route starts off from Brstnovica and runs to Scepanpolje, passing near to attractions such as the Djurdevica Tara Bridge. For the most part, your journey will be fairly sedate, although with rising water levels after the northern snow melts the rapids speed up in April and May.

Horseback riding

One of the best ways to discover the countryside taking in a vast array of scenic spots throughout Montenegro and is the favourite activity of nature lovers. The experience is available for all levels of horse riders throughout the year. The regions around Bjelasica, Komovi, Sinjajevina and the Durmitor Mountain ranges are well known for horse riding and will let you travel through habitats home to the local breeds of wild horses.

Let’s say it’s an ideal world, you’re getting all the rest hours as stated in MLC, SOLAS etc… but getting hours of shut eye on an operational vessel isn’t always easy. You

might be trying to sleep during the day, or on a rough passage. It might be noisy all around your cabin; not just from crew but from the guests. You can’t exactly tell them to pipe down can you?

So why is sleepiness such a problem? Well, sleep deprivation has been blamed for some pretty massive disasters. The 1986 Chernobyl disaster for example. The Exxon Valdez oil spill for another example. Being tired makes your reaction time much slower; so if you’re in charge of driving the guests to shore in the tender (or come to think of it, the actual yacht…) this can be a bit of a problem. It can make you a bit clumsier; so watch out for that hot pan or iron. Or if you’re like me, that door frame that surely wasn’t right there before…. Tired people have more accidents, that’s the basic fact of the matter here.

Lack of sleep can seriously impede your learning and development. During the various sleep cycles we experience each night (or day depending if you got the short straw on the watch schedule), memories are embedded in the brain, so if you don’t get enough shut-eye, you might not remember what you learned (or saw, so maybe not always a bad thing when the guests are partying) the next day. It reduces attention span so when the boss is telling you how dirty he wants his Dirty Martini, how his guests

want their margaritas, daiquiris, espresso martinis and so on you may need to write things down when you realise all you can hear is Charlie Brown’s teacher talking at you.

Not that you should be getting up to no good whilst on board, but lack of sleep also reduces the libido. And it makes you look

body releases a stress hormone called cortisol when it’s tired which breaks down the collagen in your skin. That’s the stuff in all the expensive creams that keeps your skin young and healthy.

Being tired makes people hungrier as the body craves high sugar and high fat yummy stuff to keep going, it’s hard to say no when you’ve been on the go for hours, so weight gain is another side effect of not sleeping enough. People who sleep less than six hours a day are reportedly more likely to become obese according to recent studies. And it can make you more susceptible to

then you get to share it with all your knackered crewmates and become the most hated person on board.

More seriously, like getting porky and wrinkly isn’t enough to have you running scared, medical reports have found that chronic lack of sleep can put you at risk of heart disease, heart attack, heart

Sleep deprivation. It’s all part of the job right? But could it be

failure and stroke. Plus diabetes, high blood pressure and depression. Awesome hey? Don’t be too hard on someone for bursting into tears just because the toaster was set too high and their breakfast isn’t quite right either. Being tired can make the hardest people emotional. Or grumpy. So when the engineer snaps at you give him a break, he’s probably just tired. And cranky.

So what can we do when we’re faced with trying to get some kip in the middle of the day on a break when

comes the power nap… There are a few easy steps to

a good spot. The table in the crew mess is probably not ideal unless you want something to land on your head (on purpose, possibly an ironing board or iron depending on how tired the stewardess is). Ideally your cabin. You may wish to invest in some ear plugs or put in some noise cancelling earphones.

If you do this, make sure you have someone who knows what you’re doing who can come and wake you up in case of emergency, or at the end of your nap (or put your phone on vibrate under your pillow). Not all yachts allow those earphones or ear plugs due to risk of not hearing an alarm so check this out with the captain/mate on board before I get the blame for you missing work. Listen to something soothing or try something like an audio book or a podcast. Aim for a short period of say 20 to 30 minutes. Don’t overdo it or you might feel worse. Afternoons are usually the best time to have a power nap. Why do you think the Spanish invented the post lunch siesta? It takes practice but once you get the hang of it you can tailor your power naps; if you feel too tired then reduce the time. Need a few more minutes? Try that too.

Power napping is no replacement for missing a lot of sleep but could help you get through the day; do your best to get some quality sleep as soon as you can. That means not sitting up in the crew mess to watch the end of that awful movie (you won’t remember the end of it anyway). Obviously if you’re on the late shift then it might come down to another can of redbull or cup of coffee and grinning and bearing it but try to get into the habit of sleeping when you have rest hours, regardless of time of day. When that caffeine leaves your system you will crash and burn… So drink lots of water (dehydration increases that sluggish feeling) and try to eat the right stuff; any good chef will tell you to reach for snacks with a healthy balance of protein, fat and carbs like a cereal bar. Easier said than done when there’s a drawer full of chocolate but you’ll thank me for it in the long run! Sweet dreams!

ADVERTORIAL

Steve Smith looks at the innovative solutions for superyachts delivered by 4G

Connect 4

With the roll out of 4G coverage on shore and lowering of data costs the opportunity for the maritime industry to take advantage of high speed low cost connectivity

has never been so compelling.

The information age has proved expensive for those who live and work at sea. The burgeoning requirement for internet access in all walks has put increased pressure on owners and operators to provide high speed internet access available to crews and guests on board, and the use of Vsat traditionally has been an expensive and relatively slow solution.

Now skippers are turning to the growing shore based mobile networks, capable of up to 100Mbps download speeds, to deliver the sort of high speed connectivity that users require. Whilst the solution is good it also brings its own challenges in choosing the right kit for the job and also keeping up to date with the wide range of data SIM card packages available in different countries. Add to this mix the lack of a global standard set of operating systems and radio frequencies and it is not surprising that a certain amount of confusion exists.

Vessels operating in coastal waters in individual countries have an easier choice insomuch that one operator’s SIM package will support them in most situations up to maybe 15 miles offshore, but there are still “not spots” to be encountered where there is little or no signal and there are still areas where one operator provides coverage and another doesn’t.

Travelling across borders creates other problems as data roaming from one country’s operator to another is prohibitively

expensive and largely impractical. However, the problems apart, lying at anchor close to the shore or in marinas, there is generally a good opportunity to use a 3G/4G modem or router to provide

or via Wi-Fi to the various smart phones, laptops and tablets that are all hungry for data.

In such situations the costs against Vsat are comparatively minimal and worthy of the time and effort invested by the diligent captain to provide this increasingly essential service.

Tips

• Speak to specialist providers.

• Use external antenna systems where possible to improve signal range and quality

• Dual SIM modems make life much easier when operating across borders

• EU frequencies for 3G are 2100 and 900Mhz, 4G/LTE uses 2600, 2100, 1800, 900 and 800Mhz

• networks and individual operating systems, be warned! As a rule stick to 3G/HSPA+ devices on 1900 and 850Mhz – 4G and LTE will restrict you to individual operators such as AT&T, Sprint or Verizon, don’t go there!

What made you join the superyacht industry?I had been chartering my own Swan 51 around the Atlantic for nine years and I thought it was time for a change from proper

the Trials Master at Princess International when hull #1 of their 40 metre range was launched.

Which is your favourite Mediterranean port and why do you like it?St Tropez except in July and August, because of its great location and the selection of bars and restaurants is fabulous. My favourite is the terrace of the Hotel Sube on the harbour of St Tropez, after a great day’s racing at Les Voiles.

The Mediterranean is said to be crowded with superyachts. Where do you think the best spot to get away from the others is? I love the Mediterranean and have lots of secret spots in which to anchor. I really like Corsica, although realise at times it does get busy.

If you could recommend a Mediterranean yacht service to another Captain what would it be?Antoine Capstick of Pondoro Yacht Fuels and Berths in Cannes, because he is a legend and actually does what he says. He is one of the very few agents to put his prices up on the Internet and he sticks to his motto of Keep Calm and Love Yachting.

What makes your yacht special? The owner’s programme has allowed us to travel with the job extensively in the last two years including the Seychelles, the Indian Ocean, the Persian Gulf and now the Med.

What do your crew do really well?Look after the owner’s every need, without hesitation.

What is your attitude to employing couples on board?I work on board with my partner who is the purser on board, so I am open to employing couples. However, a lot of couples do tend to have an unrealistic expectation of salaries. It is more of a risk employing a couple, so I am sorry but I will offer them as a pair slightly less than two individuals.

Do you have a pet hate and if so what is it?Whining crew who are paid very high salaries. Let’s be honest, most yacht crew get great time off out of high season, great living conditions all paid for and tax free salaries. Not bad. I especially hate it when crew with six months experience start getting demanding and telling me that they are now worth more.

If you had a magic wand what would you change in your job?Budgets, just give me the money to do the job right!

What’s the most curious request you have had made of you?

What is the most funny superyacht experience you can recall? The look on the face of the new mate, the day after he joined us in the Seychelles. He dived under the yacht to clean the props, when he surfaced we told him that the area was literally full of bull sharks. His face was a picture and I have never seen anyone get out of the water faster than he did!

What’s the best idea you’ve ever copied from another captain? How not to manage people.

hinder you?I think it is absolutely necessary for what we do and is just a fact of life.

What advice would you give to someone new entering the industry?Take your time, it’s not a rush to get to the top of the pole. Get experience the right way by serving your time on board. If you want to eventually be a Captain, spend time, loads of time getting experience as a Captain on smaller boats, and work your way up. Aim to be a seaman, a real seaman.

What makes you stand out as a Captain? I am still alive and doing the job after 26 years as a Captain on small plastic boats, a miracle really! I would like to be remembered as a Captain as someone who is approachable by the crew and who gives people a chance.

What would you like to do when you cease being in command of a superyacht? Grow a long beard, get loads of tattoos and become a street racer. In other words I can’t see it ever happening! Boats are what I do, I enjoy them and the work I do, and I will continue to

Quick FireMorning or night time person?

Kingsman

Favourite style of cuisine? Something that someone else cooks.

Three dream dinner party guests? Bear Grylls, he can come up with the menu for a laugh, Winston Churchill and my ancestor Cardinal Pole.

Where in the world would you visit if you had the chance? Alaska

Best childhood memory? Sea at the age of 13 in a Contessa 32. I vomited most of the way and loved it

Your worst habit? Bouncing around the boat, apparently I never sit still.

ROPED INThe espadrille has a colourful past. Born in the Pyrenees, the canvas and braided jute sandal shod the King of Aragon’s infantry in the thirteenth century. It also took Salvador Dalí on seaside strolls and a young JFK on Cape Cod vacations. By the 1940s, the girls had gotten in on the game, and the sandal was a Hollywood staple. Its ribbons crisscrossed the ankles of Sophia Loren and Grace Kelly, and Rita Hayworth accessorised her one piece with a pair for 1947’s The Lady from Shanghai. The espadrille reached new heights in the late sixties, when Yves Saint Laurent introduced the high heeled wedge.

When the need for speed is paramount, Captains should take a look at the Sarissa RIB range. The design is the accumulation of years of design and development from expert racer Adam Younger alongside Takis Samartzis who was responsible for the upper deck design. Powerboat racer Arran Scott has the distribution rights for Sarissa Ribs for the UK & France, and knows a thing or two about how high speed RIBS should be handled. He recently unveiled the new Sarissa 737 RIB and felt sure the model would become the most popular RIB in the range. He said, “It is streaks ahead in terms of performance, equipment, comfort and build quality and I am looking forward to showing everyone what it can do.”

The hull of the Sarissa 737 luxury yacht tender is constructed

in its class at just 680kg. TENDER MATTERS

It is often said that the best designers are those who use a product themselves. Such is the case with Carbon Craft

in the construction of its hulls and one that is owned by a superyacht owner. Some years ago Mark Levey, together with his business partner Kenneth Pierce, found himself unable to

be the ultimate accessory to their own superyachts. To make their vision a reality they put together a team of designers and builders, who previously had been building America’s Cup Racing Boats. That group has used many innovative concepts. Including the use of advanced lightweight materials like carbon

powered jet tender. Equipped with the diesel package and luxury amenities, our 160D weighs just 815Kg and it shares the folding console and optional hard top that allow stowage in yacht garages. Steve French C.O.O. at Carbon Craft told

ONBOARD, “Our products offer a premium solution over the traditional RIB tender offerings, and we are seeing yacht owners increasing interest in carrying the elegance that is built into their yachts, incorporated into the tender. As one captain said, the tender is ‘the face of the yacht’, and so having our tender vs a typical, and less aesthetic and comfortable, tender is very appealing and enhances the experience aboard the yacht.”

Josh Richardson of Superyacht Tenders and Toys tells of an

market by a British boatbuilder as a workhorse superyacht tender. He told us, “It is something a yacht can keep stowed and rolled up in a garage and act as a runabout, do watersports, safety duties and of course beach runs. The whole thing is

Superyacht Tenders and Toys are also launching a limousine tender of their own creation. Based off the back of a RIB limousine the company has already supplied, Richardson asked designer Guy Whitehouse to come up with a highly

This increasing demand to devote more resources into making boats as quiet as possible is most apparent on carbon builds where those on board feel every shock and vibration. Foldable RIBs Foldable RIBs ( F-RIBs) are a unique solution for when you require the safety, speed and comfort of a RIB but you have limited storage space available.  Ranging in size from 2.75 to 4.6 metres, each one folds down to just one third of its actual length and can easily be folded for storage or, unfolded and inflated ready for use in under 5 minutes. Weighing from as little as 36 kg and needing less than 1 metre x 1 metre x 0.5 metres of locker space these craft are being operated by commercial  and leisure users and see regular use with rescue services.  Their light and efficient hulls mean better performance can be achieved using smaller, lighter engines. For more details Tel:+44 (0)2380 988 782 or visit www.foldablerib.com

With the market place growing the question most asked is “what of the future?” Tom Sanderson, Sales Director JBT Marine the European Distributor for Ballistic RIBs says “The tender market and in fact the boating market as a whole has

them popular as tenders. This has inevitably lead to a number of manufacturers producing craft that are great for calm bays, sitting at anchor and sunbathing, which is perfect to most leisure users. They also look fantastic, however can lack the qualities required for a successful tender which although should look stunning is ultimately a working craft that needs to perform in all weather conditions and get the crew to where they need to be. With Ballistic we started with an excellent performing, well built, go through anything hull and then added the luxury. You just can’t do it the other way round and get the same result.”

TENDER MATTERS

VestdavitVestdavit’s MissionEase system makes boat-handling safer and simpler for tender garages and superyachts. It is simple, quick, safe and inexpensive, and can stow, launch and retrieve up to seven different RIBS, daughter boats and USVs in high seas from within a protected hangar. MissionEase links seamlessly with dual or single-point davits to deploy or recover boats from either side of the vessel. It can also handle standard TEU containers for stores and equipment when in port. Vestdavit designs, supplies and supports tailor-made solutions for launching and recovering boats. Their range of boat handling systems and davits are the first choice of navies, coastguards, and offshore operators who need to operate small boats safely from larger vessels. For more details Tel: +47 55 54 92 00or visit www.vestdavit.no

Vestdavit can stow, launch and retrieve up to seven different RIBS in high seas from within a protected hangar or garage on board a superyacht. Bringing together experience the company has with naval and seismic ships to make the best use of a superyacht garage, MissionEase works on a system of hydraulic cradles which moves boats safely from stowage positions to maintenance, preparation or launch areas of the garage. It is designed as a multiple-boat handling system which will make boat handling safer and simpler on expedition yachts and links seamlessly with dual or single-point davits to deploy or recover boats in high seas from either side of the vessel.

Atle Kalve, Development Director, Vestdavit, says, “The ability to deploy and recover boats safely is part of the main armament of today’s warships, and critical to seismic work and for expedition cruise ships and yachts. A garage midships allows the boats to be stored, maintained, prepared and launched from a safe environment with a dry, high freeboard.Existing systems generally rely on overhead gantries to move the boats within the garage. When a yacht is moving that can be dangerous, and slinging and unslinging takes time. MissionEase allows the boats to be moved safely and quickly within the bay on the cradles, even in high seas or with a list on the vessel. The boats are fed directly to the davits for launch, or feed directly back into the stow when recovered.”

WindyProduction boats have been the ore business of Windy since 1966.In 2009 Windy were commissioned to develop and build the Windy Dubois SR52 Blackbird. This process led to a totally new market for high end, custom boats for the superyacht market. Following this, they started the semi-custom production of this model and quickly saw that the overall qualities of build, construction and attention to detail attracted global recognition. Through the world famous yacht designers, DUBOIS Naval Architects and later through Espen Oeino, Windy hit the map of superyacht tenders, custom chase boats and limo tenders. It has to be said that at the ‘put in’ the Middle Fork would be unlikely to get anyone too excited though, generally narrow and shallow, this is not (yet) the kind of white water maelstrom you associate with white water rafting. on the highest of the peaks, which rise to between 7,000ft and 9,000ft. The upper part of the river is mellow enough that there are plenty of opportunities to sit back in your raft and watch the landscape drift by, or hang a line over the side and wait for a salmon or trout to bite (although this being a Wilderness Area,

on a catch and release basis).

Day’s end sees rafters and guides chilling out together around a

erect for you, invariably on idyllic white sand beaches beside the river, with a backdrop of pine forests and blue mountains. Meals, cooked by the guides, are also excellent and varied, there’s plenty of beer and wine, and it doesn’t take long to crash out to the plash and murmur of the nearby river.

That said, if you take a hike from the campsite up the canyon sides, there’s every chance of seeing a big horn sheep or deer, less so the more exotic local species such as bears, moose, cougars and wolves, which may be just as well for all concerned. But it’s perhaps on a lone hike before the evening meal that you’re most likely to get a feel for the isolation and challenge that this landscape provided for the pioneers who stumbled through here a century ago. Away from the chatter and clatter of the campsite,

above, it’s not hard to appreciate the awesome and sometimes frightening beauty that Idaho presented to those early travellers.

Nor is it hard to understand why the native Sheepeater Indians, whose pictographs you may stumble across, revered and worshipped such an uncompromising and elemental landscape. Named after the region’s bighorn sheep, which constituted a major part of their diet, the Sheepeaters had this gloriously unspoiled region to themselves until trappers, miners and settlers moved into

the area in dribs and drabs from the 1850s onwards, but no access roads were ever built, hence the region has seen very little development or despoilation. Floating the river began in the 1920s with pioneers who wanted to see what lay beyond the point where the trails ended, and today the number of rafters and kayakers allowed on the river is restricted in order to preserve the wilderness.

Back on the river, it wasn’t until day three of the trip that white

All I could really see of it as I got nearer in my rubber boat was a vague blur of white water, and what followed was a good deal of bouncing around and a thorough soaking. Shooting a rapid of this size appears to boil down to a combination of anxiety and adrenalin, with ideally the adrenalin winning out and taking you through.

The penultimate day of the trip began with shafts of hot sunlight beaming down from above the canyon walls to glimmer off the

These are a smaller version of the AC72 catamaran used during the 2013 Louis Vuitton Cup and the 34th America’s Cup.The AC45fs used during the series will also help progress the development of the new AC62s, the foiling catamarans to be used for the 2017 Louis Vuitton Cup selection series and the 2017 America’s Cup.

The new style, fast moving, America’s Cup race format designed to provide spectators with more excitement in an easy to understand style, means that the circuit is likely to attract thousands of visitors. The chance to be present at one of the planned events therefore is highly desirable. The opening event in Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy runs from 4-7 June with racing taking place on the Gulf surrounding the island’s capital on 6-7 June.

Although teams will arrive in town from 31 May, the Cagliari World Series programme begins with an opening ceremony on Thursday 4 June and one day of mandatory training on Friday 5 June. There will be two races a day on the Saturday and Sunday, and the prize giving ceremony will take place on the last day.

Next stop is Portsmouth, Great Britain, from 23-26 July. Here up to 500,000 visitors are expected to attend the four day sporting and entertainment spectacle to watch the world’s best sailors battling it out on The Solent.

There will be a practice race on Friday 24 July, then two races per day on the Saturday and Sunday, in total six races with four to count for points. The racing on ‘Super Sunday’ will count for more points.

Both free to view and paid ticket options are available for spectators at the Portsmouth event but paid tickets will provide

5,000 fans per day to immerse themselves in the world of the America’s Cup and enjoy prime views of the race course and access to exclusive event entertainment. Tickets to the free to view area also need to be preregistered to ensure access. This area will be located on Southsea Common, The Waterfront Festival Arena. For tickets, visit www.ticketmaster.co.uk/ACWSPortsmouth.

A month later the traveling ACC circus will arrive in Gothenburg, Sweden. This event runs from 28-30 August and racing will take place either on the Gota River close to the city centre, or at Långedrag. The race village will be located in Frihamnen.

in Bermuda, the host venue for the 35th America’s Cup in 2017.

Bermuda is made up of 181 islands, which totals 21 square miles but racing is expected to take place in the Great Sound, a natural amphitheatre for this sort of short course/spectator style racing.

As the countdown to The Cup ticks on, the more intense the competition will become. In 2016 four to six World Series events are expected to take place, including a second event in Portsmouth in July.

WHERE TO DRINK

Long and elegant, with an intense,

earthy fl avour, asparagus is considered

a delicacy of the vegetable world and has

been admired for thousands of years.

In 3000BC it was depicted in Egyptian

friezes and made an appearance in

Roman recipes, including a casserole of

eggs, wine and herbs.

FIRM AND PERKY Buy asparagus with fi rm and perky spears and tight

green tips. Anything woody or a puckered bendy stalk

is past its prime. Asparagus deteriorates faster than

most veggies, so eat as soon as possible.

BIN YOUR WOODY ENDS Asparagus is grown in sandy soil, so wash well to

remove any grit before cooking. For larger stalks,

bend the spears until they snap and throw the woody

end away. If the end still feels tough, peel away the

outer layers, leaving the top untouched.

STEAM YOUR TIPS

Cooking times vary. For soft but fi rm stalks, steam

bunches of asparagus upright in a pan for 3-5

minutes, with water covering the bottom half of the

stalks. This will cook the thickest part of the stem

and steam the delicate tips.

AND THERE’S MORE…In 1731, John Arbuthnot, a royal physician, wrote that

asparagus “affects the urine with a foetid smell”.

The scent, which not everyone can smell, is due to

sulphur containing amino acids that break down

during digestion.

The price of a Heligan pineapple. It measures

just six inches from top to toe; measly by

pineapple standards. The tiny ananas comusus

On Trend...CAULIFLOWER RICECrammed with more nutrients than you could shake a stick at, and with just 25 calories per 100g (compared with about 140 calories per 100g cooked white rice), this new grain free grain is cropping up as a highly popular rice alternative. No longer is the vegetable restricted to the smelly and soggy cheese bakes of the 1980s. It has undergone a health enhancing transformation, the result of which should satisfy even the most avid of rice addicts.

Herb butter with root veggies, olive soil and beer chips.

What is your favourite restaurant?Tickets in Barcelona, it is a new eatery by the trendy and

as cooking.

What is your Favourite kitchen gadget?Microplane Grater just be careful of your fi ngers!

What is your Favourite comfort food?My mother’s “Tamatie Bredie”. It is a South African Beef and

Tomato Stew.

What are your Top three ingredients to cook with?Ginger, Garlic and Basil.

Where do you think is the Best city in the world for food?Barcelona, Spain. It’s a great city with lots of amazing

restaurants. I Love tapas, because eating food that way, you

get to taste so many different things!

What is the one ingredient everyone needs in their fridge?Lemons, even though some people say you should never

refrigerate them.

What was the last dish you cooked for yourself to eat because you really wanted to eat it?Last dish I cooked for myself was a Grilled skirt steak salad

with spicy green beans and citrus vinaigrette.

What is your most memorable food moment?Eating fresh seafood from a traditional Fijian Lovo on a

remote island in Fiji. What a great unforgettable experience!

There are around 1700 different variables every time you make an espresso. These variables come from when and where the bean is grown to how

it is transported, processed and roasted. All of these

the product. We are not just looking at the quality of the bean, we are also looking at all the ways it has been

taste of your cup of coffee.

Coffee only grows on the equator between the two tropics, we call this The Coffee Belt. Most of the world’s coffee is grown organically as it is grown in third world countries where pesticides are expensive and caffeine is a natural insecticide. Arabica coffee grows at 800m above sea level and is a much more delicate bean. Robusta is a very cheap coffee that grows anywhere between those lines. Robusta has three times more caffeine than Arrabica but half the oil.

red through to yellow until it falls off. The four stages of life can happen at the same time on the plant so selection is very important after picking. The beans are red once they are perfectly ripe so handpickers aim to select these. Another approach to know if the beans are perfectly ripe is to measure the caffeine levels as when the beds turn red the level of caffeine in them drops to around 1% (the yellow and green beans can be as high as 20%). So the caffeine content is an indicator of quality but unfortunately is not stated by law on the

Once the beans have been picked, they have to be processed to remove the outer skin and mucilage. This happens in different ways depending on where they are

grown. Wet processing is a bit more selective, this happens in countries that have a good water supply, like south America. Simply this means after picking the beans, they are placed in long water troughs. The perfectly ripe

and the immature sink and only the ripe beans make it to the end of the trough, while twigs leaves and stones are lost along the way.

Dry processing is when the beans are spread evenly on the ground, where they are baked. The husk dries and comes off as the beans are skilfully raked and turned to stop mould and mildew forming. The best example for this is green pepper, the wet process produces white pepper and dry process makes black. They have obviously different organoleptic qualities.

We get better crema from wet processed beans because a bit of the coffee’s natural oil gets washed away during processing and the oil is an inhibitor of the CO2 layer. The better the crema, the more volatile aromas are retained. There are around 300 delicate volatile aromas in wine but up to 900 in coffee. Crema has nothing to do with quality, it just means the chemical reaction has been successful.

Purchasing the beans is another factor, most companies buy directly from the The Green Coffee Market at a price set in the New York stock exchange. The green market is made up of brokers and middlemen who buy from the farmers and sell to various coffee companies. Illy for example pay the farmer directly over 25% more than Fairtrade. That’s why some coffees are not fairtrade if they value sustainability equally, you can’t do both.

Trieste is the biggest port in Europe. More rigorous buyers may source the beans directly from the farm and they will sample the beans prior to buying. Once the beans have been chosen, you must be careful they are not ruined in transit.

Once the coffee has made it to the roaster, it is then down to them to decide on roasting times and temperature. When blending coffee, the beans should be blended green and then roasted so they are all the same age and colour. Poor roasters roast beans individually and then blend those to order, so this means the result can be uneven in colour and age and so unbalanced and often rancid notes that become dominant.

A good roaster will roast for at least 12 minutes, however

beans is under developed as they are not dried through properly giving a low yield. Drinking a coffee that has been roasted too early can have these traits as 85%

only be done with a perfect blend. It takes 55 beans to make an espresso and if one is defective it will become dominant, as an omelette made with 55 eggs will only taste of the defective one.

Training comes in many different guises, each is delivered differently and with each delivery there is an alternative motive to the learning that accompanies it. Training can

be in house, on board or delivered in a classroom. It can be experienced one on one or as a group exercise. Some training is mandatory and is often treated as a necessary evil something that has to be endured survived and tolerated to get on in the world we all work in. Other forms of training are elective in that the classes taken are by choice rather than by decree. Elective classes are those that a student can take which are

week provide advice on relevant sail training for a future career.Alison Rentoul has created a name for herself in superyacht circles as the Crew Coach. Punchy, eye catching marketing e mails are well targeted to crew she has listed on her database. As a career coach, she is delighted to see the trend towards up-skilling in yachting. She says, “Elective courses on subjects like crisis management, IT or wine knowledge all are excellent steps to progress up the yachting ladder and make the most of your potential.”

To Captains and Senior Crew members she says, “You know that running a yacht is much like running a company. Operating the boat is only a very small part of the job, while crew management and administrative duties take up the majority of your time.” Leaders need to be able to eradicate crew politics as quickly as

their position and impact job security. Rentoul says, “Because you are busy, personnel issues or personality clashes are also an added frustration that you simply don’t need. Gaining the ability to make people willingly do what you want them to do (exactly how and when you want them to do it), makes everyone’s life

There is a science to running a team well, and it is one that can be learnt. This is leadership coaching. Smart senior crew are now realising something the sporting world has long understood: when it comes to managing people, coaching takes your existing potential and ability and converts it into peak performance. In the corporate world, Richard Branson surrounds himself with mentors and coaches, while Bill Gates has famously said ‘everybody needs a coach.’

Currently, HELM (Human Element, Leadership and Management Training), is the only compulsory leadership training module in

But the Crew Coach asks, “Is HELM enough to create a great leader?” She believes it is not and advocates, “HELM is just a great foundation and starting point.” She says, “It focuses on ‘what’ you need to know in order to be a good leader. Yet that’s

techniques so that you learn ‘how’ to be a good leader, and actively put what you’ve learnt into practice. That’s where you need advanced leadership training.”

With this in mind the Crew Coach has put together a unique combination of online leadership training developed exclusively for the superyacht industry. Through online videos, workbooks and live tutorials, you will learn how to motivate, how to deal

build great crews, as well as how to manage your own time and deal with stress.

Many believe that it is up to the industry itself to identify and self regulate training needs. Most crew in the deck and engineering departments have to allow for a training budget (usually a personal expense) for the perpetual courses required

name but a very few, that will round off the needed skill sets that are an essential part of the on board yachting dream we sell. I believe that those who represent the owners and guest’s wellbeing should take more of a vested interest and responsibility to ensure that this relevant training is available, encouraged

and recognised within this growing industry and pertaining to each department.

Joey Meen suggests that much of elective training genres should also be recognised when a crew member takes that leap from ship to shore. She says, “In fact with the yachting sector continuing to grow so much over the years, we have carved out our own land based career paths and therefore should also be looking ahead at creating training that crosses over.”

Crew Coach Alison Rentoul wraps up the case for elective training well saying, “Next time you are considering an elective course to boost your yachting career, choose the one that teaches you how to lead. For, if you don’t know how to lead, no-one will truly follow.”

ST. HILARION CASTLE

One of the most visited sites in Northern Cyprus, Saint Hilarion Castle lies on the Kyrenia mountain range and is the best preserved ruin of the three castles in Kyrenia, the others being Kantara and Buffavento. It was originally built as a monastery until the Byzantines began

to provide defence against Arab attacks.

APOSTOLOS ANDREAS MONASTERY

The monastery is situated just south of Cape Apostolos Andreas, the northeastern most point of the island of Cyprus, in Rizokarpaso on the Karpaz Peninsula. The monastery is dedicated to Saint Andrew and is an important site for the Cypriot Orthodox Church. It was once known as ‘the Lourdes of Cyprus’, served not by an organized community of monks but by a changing group of volunteer priests and laymen. Both Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities consider the monastery a holy place.

What are the main advantages of registering a yacht on the Isle of Man?

A highly successful International Ship Registry since 1984

totals nearly 16 million gross tons and includes between 80 -100 large commercial yachts and many more large private yachts. The Isle of Man Registry maintains a team of surveyors, registrars and administrative support staff which responds (24/7) quickly and pragmatically to the rapidly changing needs of the industry, contributing, advising and assisting with newbuild and conversion projects globally. Speak to David, Ron, Graeme, Chris, Sam or Angus. They are there to help.

Charges are very competitive with no annual tonnage dues. They also register vessels at a speed which knocks the socks off most other registries. The only way to further quicken the process would be to coat the forms in butter.

Isn’t there a problem obtaining a Balearic Charter Licence for an Isle of Man Yacht? Not anymore. Recent changes to Spanish legislation mean

exemption from the 12% matriculation tax and obtain a charter

Sounds positive. But aren’t they just another commercial organisation trying to turn a profit?

agency. They are dedicated to safety of life at sea, the prevention of pollution, and the welfare of crew members on Manx-registered

Isle of Man (Manx) economy and their success is one of the many reasons why the Isle of Man has experienced 30 years of unbroken economic growth. They have no external debt and government reserves total over a billion pounds. Their record speaks for itself.

What sets them apart from the bigger yacht registries? Why should anyone chose the Isle of Man?Quality, expertise, service….Now to illustrate something else. Imagine a yacht owner buys an apartment in London. His wife spends over a million just on the design of the kitchen because she wants it to be different from the neighbours’ kitchens. Sure, she wants top quality, functionality and every possible convenience, but most of all she hates the idea of copying others, of running with the herd. She and her husband take the same attitude towards everything about their yacht. They choose the Isle of Man Flag.

Where are the offices located? They are based in Douglas with their surveyors travelling globally. They also employ a growing team of internationally based, non-exclusive surveyors. They can reach you anywhere, anytime.

Milk contains many biological products apart from protein and nutrients. It can cause an increase in sebum production, an oily substance that can clog pores. Maybe opt for almond milk, instead.

CARBOHYDRATES

The researchers believe increased insulin can cause inflammation in the skin, leading to breakouts. Lay low on the sugar and switch to whole grains to be safe.

NOT ENOUGH OMEGA 3 & 6

Omega 3 & 6 will help to reduce inflammation and breakouts. Plus, we all know it helps keep our heads straight during the busy charter season.

STRESS

Researchers believe that stress hormones can worsen acne. Certain steroid hormones, are released during stress, and are known to cause breakouts by activating the oil gland and clogging your pores.

TOO MUCH SUN

Over several years, sun exposure may increase your skin’s oil production, which can clog your pores. Choose a high factor sunscreen that won’t clog your pores. Keep calm and slap it on.

HORMONES

The body produces hormones called androgens in adolescence when the sebaceous glands are over stimulated by androgens to cause blemishes. This can sometimes persist well into adulthood.

Contrary to popular belief, acne is not just a teenage nightmare, but a common problem among men of all ages. It’s therefore important to arm yourself with all the facts. Below are answers to some of the most popular questions concerning acne. What is acne? According to dermatologists, acne is a hormonal disorder of the skin, in which a high level of androgens stimulates the sebaceous glands to produce more oil than necessary, resulting in an

face twice a day with a gentle cleanser that has been formulated for oily or acneprone skin. Remember that overwashing or scrubbing too hard can dry out and irritate the skin, making the acne worse. You should also opt for a dermatologist approved, oil free moisturizer, as it will not clog your pores.

Can shaving cause pimples? While shaving itself cannot cause acne, not using the proper blade or shaving cream can cause your skin to become irritated or nicked. So be sure to use a sharp blade and high quality shaving cream or gel.

Does stress cause acne? Day to day stress that occurs in the workplace and in your personal life is not known to cause acne; profound tension, however, just may. Excessive stress may cause your body to produce an excess of hormones, which can cause you to break out.

Stop before you pop? worse. Squeezing blackheads is a bad idea because

whiteheads will only push the germs farther into the skin, resulting in soreness, redness and perhaps even infection. It can also lead to permanent scarring.

What’s the difference between face and body acne?

body acne. Pimples can occur anywhere on the body, except on the palm of the hand and sole of the foot, as these are the only places on the body where the skin pores have no hair canals. However, they generally appear on the face, chest, back, neck, arms, and buttocks. Consequently, you can use the same anti acne cream on your body that you do on your face.

SPOT ON What are the main causes of acne?Sure, your skin might break out during a busy charter season, but what is the real cause?

The focus is currently on strengthening service provision so as to continue to guarantee added value for customers. In sixty years, the small battery wholesaler has grown into an advisory technical wholesaler for the maritime sector, with a product range of more than 5000 articles, including famous brands such as Aqua Signal, Blue Sea, Victron Energy, Philippi, Side-Power and VDO.

Onboard power supplyOnboard power has traditionally been the core competence of ASA Boot Electro. On yachts, the provision

This is why ASA Boot Electro has partnered with Victron Energy, the world’s leading supplier of nautical power solutions. In addition to a standard solution, customers can also opt for additional power sources, such as an extra alternator with intelligent charge controller, solar and wind power, or a diesel generator.

Yacht owners and their ETOs are constantly looking for ways to maximise their onboard internet bandwidth. The CELLweaver can combine up to four 4G/3G connections into a single data stream with speeds of up to 400 Mbit/s and thus ensures the owner has a great internet connection when on board within up to 10nm off the coastline. The compact, rackmounted unit (48,30 x 30 x 8,9 cm) requires 220V and has 4 SIM slots. The CELLweaver enables bandwidth demanding services like movie streaming, skype, and internet TV on board, and for multiple users simultaneously. Using a capable source selector or

internet connectivity can then be managed by the ETO and made available as required.

The challenge is to ensure it performs when you need it to but also that people want to wear it. Designing a lifejacket using 3D technology, such as Crewsaver’s advanced Fusion 3D, allows the product to mould to the shape of your body and sit off the neck giving the user total freedom of movement, creating a lifejacket so comfortable you forget you’re wearing it. Fusion 3D technology is widely used in our lifejackets for ocean racing, like the ErgoFit Extreme. Our challenge was to extend access to this same technology to all recreational boaters, including juniors. We’ve achieved this; Crewsaver’s newest lifejackets boast more key safety features for in water performance, in a range of supremely wearable lifejackets.

marine electronics have become a vital component of on board safety in a number of ways. GPS for instance gives mariners the ability to know exactly where they are at any time; a fantastic safety feature that is often taken for granted, however modern electronics now offer a range of new

DSC communications, satellite communication and features such as autopilots help in reducing fatigue and in the case of an emergency, new software developments mean the emergency services can be called into action at the push of a button. Today, these facilities are available to all. Even on the smallest of vessels there is no excuse to scrimp on safety.

Did you know the majority of wear that a teak deck sustains is from the cleaning process alone! Over cleaning will wear the deck out, removing softer wood from the grain so water stays in the wood for longer helping green algae and mould growth. If caulking between the planking is proud by more than 1.5mm then trim it back to the level of the teak surface to stop standing water being trapped. Apply a fungicide to the teak twice a year, such as Boracol for professional cleaning or a weaker concentrate available from chandleries. Just rinse the deck, no scrubbing needed, which would wear the deck out. For decks that have been scrubbed too hard or pressure washed, sand back to a level surface to allow water to drain away.

RECRUIT

One of the peculiarities of working in the yachting industry is that jobs can be short lived, and I’m not just talking about seasonal jobs for deckhands and stewardesses.

Many will have experienced a yacht sale, some will have left a good job to study and climb the career ladder, some will have been dismissed, sometimes with little explanation, others will have left an unbearable job with no leadership or team spirit…

initial feeling of elation (for those who experience it) from this new found freedom is bound to evaporate if you do not secure a new job in fairly short order.

I mentioned in the previous issue of ONBOARD that after a dip in numbers, the number of jobs available in-house at YPI CREW

and stewardesses should make for a fairly relaxed job search experience as, after all, we are in a candidate driven market, right? Yes, undoubtedly we are, and certainly, recruiters also witness a faster pace at which yacht crew are rejecting job offers; this is a clear indicator that crew have more employment options open

So, how do you stay sane looking for work when you have to repeat over and over that “no, I have not found a job yet” or when you feel your partner’s patience is surreptitiously wearing thin or even perhaps when recruiters don’t revert back to you?

5,10,25,30 crew or more on a yacht, so obviously the demand is less at the top which is why it will take you longer to secure a job. Recognising and accepting this simple fact will help you put things into perspective. Of course, it’s normal to experience various emotions from sadness and frustration to self-doubt;

It’s important to get your whole network going. Most of the time, captain’s jobs come from word of mouth, personal contact, past contacts, past employers, people you have worked with. Of course, recruiters have jobs too, but most of our activity is placing crew, not captains. Get visible, write or contribute to industry magazines and press: they are always looking for

The new pension freedom from April 2015 is welcome news for anyone with UK pension funds, wherever they live. However, you do need to consider the tax implications in

It is vital you have all the facts about your new options, and carefully consider the implications of each option. This includes taxation in the UK and the country where you pay tax; leaving the balance to your heirs; what control you have over investment options; what income will be generated, and ensuring you do not run out of funds in your later years. You can only determine which option is right for you once you have weighed them all up.

The local tax regime in some countries, for example France, can provide attractive opportunities under the new UK pension regime. Specialist, professional advice is essential.
