Dreams Are Great!

1

Have you ever sat and ponder what type of life you would like to have? I am sure that if you are in college or at a university you have probably done this at one point. As you begin your college or university journey, you probably desire to complete your college degree, get an internship that will allow you to gain experience, then finally get a career that will allow you to live well off. Dreams are great; they give you a drive and motivation to accomplish what you have embarked.

“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream” C.S. Lewis

2

It is important to realize that God has connected every one of our successes and accomplishments in life with the type of person we are. Do not hyperventilate now; don’t just simply give up if you have not been a great person until now. Everything has a second chance the moment you realize what can be changed in life. One of the areas many of us happen to fail at is honoring our parents. Even at a later time in our life, honoring our parents is extremely important. Ephesians 6:1-3 States: 1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— 3 “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”

3

Going to college or university is the smart thing to do without a doubt, but in reality all that will be in vein if we do not honor our parents. God has given them a place in our lives that we must accept and give them that place. Doing this will ensure us a long and fulfilling life. Don’t just conform to receiving an education and not fulfill what the word actually says. Keep over all things the word of God and its commandments; especially this one since it is the first one that actually has a promise attached to it. See it take place in your life, honor your father and mother!

Two of California’s

systems in pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree are

California State University (CSU) and University of

California (UC). There are 23 CSU’s and 10 UC’s.

In order to apply for the

CSU’s you must go to the webpage

www.csumentor.edu and click on “Create An

Account.” Once the account has been established, you

may begin to apply for any of the 23 campuses

available. Keep in mind that every CSU needs a separate application. For example, if

you are applying to CSU Long Beach and CSU

2

Fullerton, you will need to complete two applications through CSUMentor.edu. For Fall 2014 admission,

the application is available to be submitted from October 1st through November 30th.

To apply for the UC go to

the website of http://admission.universityof

california.edu. Click on “Apply Online” and “Create an Account.” For the UC’s

only one application is needed if wanting to apply to multiple campuses. For Fall

2014 admission, the application deadline is from November 1st through the 30th. However, you are able to start the application on

October 1st.

3

Do keep in mind that the

universities will charge an application fee. For the CSU is $55 for each application

and the UC $70 per campus. However, if you qualify for a fee waiver, you do not have

to pay.

Moving On

If you are a senior in High School or a Community College student

here are some helpful tips in transferring to another institution to

pursue higher education.

Things you might need to fill out the application:

• Transcripts

• Test Scores

• Annual Income

• SSN

• Proper email must be used. Check regularly. Colleges are moving away from paper and going electronic.

• Adding all classes that you have passed.

• For TRANSFER STUDENTS, use the website www.assist.org to check the courses your Community College transfers into the University courses.

AB540

In the year 2001, Governor Gray Davis passed the Assembly Bill 540 allowing undocumented students to have the opportunity to pay in-state tuition for Community Colleges, CSUs and UCs. Tuition is the amount of money a student must pay per unit they take. However, tuition varies significantly if paying in-state or out-of-state. To qualify for this you must:

• Have attended a California high school for three years.

• Graduated from a California high school.

• Fill out an affidavit (A legal document confirmed and signed in the presence of a notary public) that verifies if you meet the requirements and the intentions of establishing legal residency.

• For more information log unto http://ab540.com/index.html

Educational Opportunity

Program (EOP)

If you are a First Generation College

Student and of a low-income family, go to your school

and ask about EOP. Some benefits this program offers are

counseling, materials, and

money for books. They serve as a

great tool for those who are first in their family to pursue higher

education.
