William Turner William Turner’s demonstration will focus on glazing techniques which apply to acrylics and oil painting. On prepared surfaces with colors and textures, he will demonstrate how to enrich or modify a painting’s colors and create luminous effects. “ My hope is this will open new avenues for fellow artists to explore in their work.” William Turner’s paintings create an energetic art that draws on the legacy of West Coast Abstraction. His im- ages are expressive, charged with color, and contain landscape, inte- rior and figurative references, met- aphors from his world of spontane- ous improvisation. Inspired in 2004 by a remnant of Kent Valley farmland, Turner be- gan his Valley Series which soon became a meditation on the landscape where agriculture and nature merge. In his current work, Turner takes a step further toward merging his per- sonal abstract aesthetic of marks and symbols with material references, walking the line between abstraction and realism. September’s President's Message:

HI everyone, kudos to everyone who made it to the meeting last night, and sympathy to those who

tried and had to give up. The turnout was amazing! I was afraid with the traffic problems no one would

be there, but we had about 50 members and guests! Our membership campaign is going great guns

and we’re excited to be adding new people all the time.

The election was held and all members on the proposed slate were approved. Currently we have

Open Juried Show followed by the Plein Air Show followed by the Members Show and the show at TCC

and before we know it, it will be Thanksgiving and Christmas. Yikes! Be sure to look over the newslet-

ter carefully because you won’t want to miss anything. There is new information about the Art Alliance

and Anne Knapp is calling for involvement there to make the coming Gala a big success, so please

think about how you can contribute.

Kathy Thurston gave a wonderful demonstration of Gobi painting. Everyone had an opportunity for an

up close view of this ancient technique. It’s a beautiful process and her work is lovely. Patsy O’Connell also invited us to consider

showing our work at the Asian Cultural Center in Tacoma if there is an Asian influence in our art.

I encourage all of you to view all of these art shows and hope they inspire you to create some art of your own. Which leads me to….

Once again I challenge each of you to make a name tag for yourself that shows the artistic you and make a point of meeting someone

new at our next meeting.

See you soon.

Kate Grizwold President.

Peninsula Art League Plein Air Show 2014

Thanks again to the Lodge at Mallard's Landing for hosting us for our 4th Annual Plein Air Show. The show consists of works done this summer by Peninsula Art League screened artists who paint with the Plein Air group (outdoor land-scape painting) or with Drawing You In (outdoor figurative works). The show was hung jointly by the artists and has 63 pieces- larger and more expansive than last year. The Gig Harbor Arts Commission did the judging- special thanks to Laura Bethke, Mary Manning, and Marth Reisdorf, who took time out of their Friday evening to judge the show. The winners are: 1st Place Sheila Anderson for "Sunworshiper" 2nd Place Myrna Binion "Summer Riot" 3rd Place Charli Meacham "Tools of the Trade" 4th Place Mary McInnis "Bujacich Netshed"

The Show runs through Sunday November 2nd, take down is Monday, November 3rd in the afternoon.

Chris Cotton and the Sunshine Committee need your help! If you could donate one or two cards Chris could use, it would

be greatly appreciated. Individually made Artist cards make a big difference and are far more personal and appropriate.

Please bring them to the PAL meeting or make arrangements with Chris. Thank you!

The Peninsula Art League’s Regional Open Juried Show continues through November 14th at the Harbor History Museum at 4121 Har-borview Dr. in Gig Harbor. I have three paintings in that show (don’t miss my painting that is hanging on your right before entering the gal-lery where the show is hung!) And coming up, I’ll have a show of recent pastel paintings at the Sidney Museum and Gallery at 202 Sidney Ave in Port Orchard from November 2 to November 22 with a reception on Sunday November 9th from 1 to 4pm. Put it on your calendar and come by to say hi! Again, a very sincere thank you to all who came to my Open Studio last month (including the owner of Demi-Lune!) Happy Fall! Mary J McInnis

International Art Show Winners Announced in Gig Harbor

Entries came from across the U.S. and Canada. 23 awards were presented.

Winners were recently announced in Peninsula Art League’s 12th annual Open Juried Show, currently on display at Gig Harbor’s History Museum. The show continues through Nov. 15. The museum is located at 4121 Harborview Drive on Gig Harbor’s historic waterfront. Nearly two-dozen awards were presented, totaling more than $6,000 in cash and priz-es.

Juror Carla O’Connor, an internationally known watercolor painter who lives in Gig Harbor, announced the winners at the exhibit’s opening reception Sept. 28.

The Best of Show ribbon went to Tacoma artist Mary Schumaker for her watercolor painting titled Koi, the Beginning.

Patricia Meras, Port Orchard, took home the First Place Painting award for her soft pastel called Montana Spring Thaw. Second Place Painting went to Vancouver, B.C. oil painter Jeff Wilson for Booth Hill Junction.

Bremerton photographer Merle Jones’ close-up of a wooden chicken was awarded the First Place Photography prize.

In all, nearly 300 paintings and photographs were entered into the show by artists from across the U. S. – from Texas to New York to Canada. O’Connor selected 110 art-works to be included in the exhibition.

“I was impressed by the personal commitment to the pursuit of excellence and the boundless creativity,” O’Connor said in presenting the awards.

She based her selections on several criteria. “I look for thoughtful composition, a willing-ness to take risks, refusing to be satisfied with past successes, a search for originality, transcending the medium and technical expertise.”

She noted that every medium except sculpture was represented, and hoped there would be some sculpture next year.

”There’s really something for every viewer to appreciate in this show – landscapes, fig-ures, abstracts, and animals. There’s color, atmosphere, subtleties, emotions, humor, vast-ness, bold statements and delicate whispers.”

Chair Jo Ann Sullivan, announced the People’s Choice award will be presented on Nov. 14. Ballots are available in the museum’s gallery until noon on Nov. 13. “We encourage everyone who visits the show to vote for their favorite artwork,” Sullivan said.

Summer Art

Festival

2014

Images shout louder than words! People came in droves, even with the wind.

Thank you Hilaire for the

planning of a great festival

and great images!

Most memorable was

the unexpected strong

winds that took out ex-

hibitor’s tents. Thanks

to all the exceptional

people who helped

clean up the mess, fight

tents, and find extra

weights to keep them in

place.

Member’s Show at Key Bank was yet again, a full house. Thank you Key Bank for

hosting another successful art show.

President Kate Griswold called the meeting to order at 10:00 am. Attendees: Kate Griswold, Greg Trathen, Jo

Ann Sullivan, Anne Knapp, Judy Buskirk, Karen Wilsey, Barbara Ruble, Charli Meacham, Hilaire Radowick, Cathie Johnson, Ceci Anderson, Carlene Salazar, and Charlee Glock-Jackson. Treasurer’s report - Charli Meachum: We now have

$158,568.91 in total assets. Festival comparison: 2013 - $13,793 net income; 2014 - $9,918* net so far and going down as charges continue to come in. *The Key Bank grant was never applied for; so their $4,000 contribution has not been received.

Kate will follow up on getting that support.

Art Festival Wrap-up - Hilaire Radowick attended the Zapp Conference in Portland and networked with people from

all over the nation. The artists are very supportive of the application. She also attended the Art of the Pearl festival and saw how they powered their festival. They did a lot of Artists in Action demos. She had the first training session with Emily Porter and Bob Knapp. The application contains many training videos. As a benefit of using this new application, we will get more high-quality people applying for the festival and still keep the core of Gig Harbor artists. To keep the board meeting on

schedule, further festival discussions will continue off-line.

Open Juried Show - Jo Ann Sullivan: We are on schedule and in good shape for volunteers.

Sept. Calendar: 22 & 23 Drop off and sign-in artwork ; 24 Juror selects awards; 25 Sponsors select awards; 26 Opening

reception 6 – 8 pm; with award ceremony aprox. 6:30 pm

Members’ Shows – Cathie Johnson/Charli Meachum: The question is: Can artwork that has already been shown in

other PAL shows be entered in a Members’ Show. Only art that has already been shown at a “Members Show” will be ex-cluded. Art that has been shown at specialty shows will still be eligible for member shows. If we give out awards at the spe-cialty shows, do we charge $10 per entry? Cathie: If we sponsor the reception and the awards for the specialty shows, it is a members’ show. Kate: We need to clarify the rules. At the next board meeting we should have a couple of proposals to se-lect from. Greg and Cathie take an action item to set up a meeting off-line and create guidelines to review at our October

board meeting.

Volunteers and New Officers – Judy Buskirk: Updated the list of volunteers for PAL Board Officers:

President Kate Griswold (continues)

1st VP Charli Meacham

2nd VP’s Cathie Johnson &

Greg Trathen (continues)

Treasurer Bob Knapp

Secretary Nancy Bartlett

Member at Large Barbara Ruble

Member at Large Myrna Binion (continues)

Member at Large Karen Wilsey (continues)

Judy also provided a list of chairs and volunteers for various assignments; some additions will be made. Congratula-tions to Judy for such great success in finding participants. Judy will create a ballot to vote for officers at next Tuesday’s

Members’ Meeting. Kate will verify bi-laws on voting for officers.

Membership Drive – Ceci Anderson passed out a new form to review. Suggestions: Move the amount paid below the tear off line so that the section that Ceci receives will show how much was paid. Also, for this year, leave off the signa-ture line for volunteering. Change “Logging people in for a show” to “Checking in art…” Kate will emphasize the need for volunteer participation at our meetings, and recognize the volunteers. Chairs should call and remind volunteers. Ceci: It

would really be nice if we had a volunteer coordinator. Discussion will continue at our next meeting.

Refreshments at meetings - Charli: Do we pay for refreshments at any committee meetings? Kate: The board

prefers that PAL does not pay for refreshments at meetings, these are donated by volunteers. We provide coffee, tea and

water only at the Members’ Meetings.

Plein Air Show - Anne Knapp/Charlee Glock-Jackson: Posters are available to hand out. We hang the show on

Friday Oct. 3 at 1:00 pm. A $10 entry fee covers all entries; four large pieces or six smaller (under 11x14”) pieces. Recep-tion: Sat. Oct. 4th from 2 – 4 pm at the Lodge at Mallard’s Landing. The Arts Commission will juror the show and participate

in various art events, but they have no money for awards.

Board meeting calendar – Kate: Oct 23 – Board Meeting Nov 20 – Board Meeting Oct 28 - Members Meeting

Nov 25 – Members Meeting We will change the Members’ Meeting time from the advertised 5:30 pm social and 6:30 pm business, to 5:30 pm social and 6:00 pm business in January, 2015. Screening room opens at 4:30 pm, the door locks at

5 pm.

Kate reviewed talking points for her presentation today at New Neighbors.
