W elcome to Trinity Parish!

We follow the historic Word and Table format of Christian worship. In the Service of the Word we read, sing, pray, proclaim and respond to God’s Word. In the Service of the Table, we set apart our offerings and ask God to make the bread and wine the sacramental presence of Jesus. All baptized Christians are welcome to communion.

Our worship is taken from the Book of Common Prayer, “common” being prayers we pray together, “in common.” In other words, our services are participatory, with shared prayers indicated in bold for you to pray with us.

We are so glad you are worshiping with us.

Grace and Peace,

The Clergy and Vestry of Trinity Parish

THE WORD OF GOD (The Book of Common Prayer: BCP, 355)

Celebrant: Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. People: And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.

Celebrant: Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Page 5: OCTOBER 4, 2020 · slaves, ‘The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. 9 Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet.’

COLLECT Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you.

Celebrant: Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

(Blessing of the Children)

LESSONS

Psalm 106:1-6, 19-23 (Read responsively) 1 Hallelujah!

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, * for his mercy endures for ever.

2 Who can declare the mighty acts of the LORD * or show forth all his praise?

3 Happy are those who act with justice * and always do what is right!

4 Remember me, O LORD, with the favor you have for your people, * and visit me with your saving help;

5 That I may see the prosperity of your elect and be glad with the gladness of your people, * that I may glory with your inheritance.

6 We have sinned as our forebears did; * we have done wrong and dealt wickedly.

19 Israel made a bull-calf at Horeb * and worshiped a molten image;

20 And so they exchanged their Glory * for the image of an ox that feeds on grass.

21 They forgot God their Savior, * who had done great things in Egypt,

22 Wonderful deeds in the land of Ham, * and fearful things at the Red Sea.

Page 6: OCTOBER 4, 2020 · slaves, ‘The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. 9 Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet.’

23 So he would have destroyed them, had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach, * to turn away his wrath from consuming them.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

Ephesians 1:7, 2:1, 4-9

A reading from Paul’s letter to the Ephesians.

1:7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace...

2:1 You were dead through the trespasses and sins...

4 But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us 5 even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God— 9 not the result of works, so that no one may boast.

Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

GRADUAL: God Is So Good

Matthew 22:1-14 (Standing)

Celebrant: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. People: Glory be to thee, O Lord.

1 Once more Jesus spoke to them in parables, saying: 2 “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a wedding banquet for his son. 3 He sent his slaves to call those who had been invited to the wedding banquet, but they would not come. 4 Again he sent other slaves, saying, ‘Tell those who have been invited: Look, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready; come to the wedding banquet.’ 5 But they made light of it and went away, one to his farm, another to his business, 6 while the rest seized his slaves, mistreated them, and killed them. 7 The king was enraged. He sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. 8 Then he said to his slaves, ‘The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. 9 Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet.’ 10 Those slaves went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both good and bad; so the wedding hall was filled with guests.

11 “But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing a wedding robe, 12 and he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding robe?’ And he was speechless. 13 Then the king said to the attendants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ 14 For many are called, but few are chosen.”

Celebrant: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise be to thee, O Christ.

SERMON: The Rev. Curt Benham (Seated)

NICENE CREED (Standing)

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

Page 8: OCTOBER 4, 2020 · slaves, ‘The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. 9 Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet.’

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate: he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE (Kneeling)

With all of our heart and mind, let us join in prayer to God, our Heavenly Father.

We are eternally grateful for the beauty of the world You have made, for creating us in Your image, for Your blessings too numerous to count, and especially…for the Gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Thank You, Lord.

Lord God, we ask that your peace, wisdom, and loving kindness rekindle the world’s love for You and for each other. Renew us, Lord.

We pray for our country: our President, governor and mayor, our elected leaders, and those who defend our freedoms and their families. Guide us, Lord.

May our bishops, clergy, staff, vestry, and lay ministers be bold in our faith, and shine the light of Your love to our broken world. Inspire us, Lord.

We pray for the unemployed and the underemployed, for victims of the pandemic and those affected by the fires in the West. We pray for those who are struggling economically, emotionally, and spiritually. Shower them with your comfort, grace, mercy, and strength.

Restore us, Lord.

I invite your prayers of intercession and thanksgiving – (silence)

We pray for all who have died. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace. Amen

Page 9: OCTOBER 4, 2020 · slaves, ‘The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. 9 Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet.’

CONFESSION OF SIN

Celebrant: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Together: Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

(Celebrant declares God’s pardon and absolution)

THE HOLY COMMUNION

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER A (Standing)

Celebrant: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you.

Celebrant: Lift up your hearts. People: We lift them to the Lord.

Celebrant: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

(Celebrant prays a seasonal prayer.)

Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

SANCTUS: S-125

Page 11: OCTOBER 4, 2020 · slaves, ‘The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. 9 Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet.’

(Kneeling)

Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself, and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me."

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."

Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Celebrant and People

Christ has died. Christ is risen.

Christ will come again.

All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. AMEN.

And now, as our savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

BREAKING OF THE BREAD

Celebrant: Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; People: Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.
