WE’RE GLAD YOU’RE HERE!

WHO WE ARE

To all who are spiritually weary and seek rest,To all who mourn and long for comfort,To all who struggle and desire victory,To all who sin and need a Savior,To all who are strangers and want fellowship,To all who hunger and thirst after righteousness, andTo all who will come,This church opens wide her doors and offersWelcome in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

WELCOME NOTEWelcome to Covenant! We are glad you are here and would love to get know you better. This morning, we invite you to experience the presence of Christ with His people as you gather with us. Our community is a collection of people of all ages and professions, from a wide variety of spiritual and social backgrounds. Please see an usher or a staff member for more information on how you can connect to our other ministries.

Children are always welcome to participate in worship with their families. We believe that our children are as much a part of the church as everyone else and that God welcomes children into worship. So do we!

A nursing mothers’ room is located near the bottom of the staircase in the vestibule (exiting from the sanctuary to the right), and a cry room is located at the top of those stairs in Room 227.

A storage area for coats, umbrellas, and other large personal items is located at the base of the bell tower, to the left of the large wooden doors as you exit the narthex.

Centrally located in the southern hills of Nashville, we are a multi-generational church family seeking to make mature disciples of Jesus Christ for the glory of God and the good of our neighbors, our city, and our world. We do this through worship, formation, and mission.

Welcome to Covenant

HYMN All Praise to God, Who Reigns AbovePLEASE STAND

PRAYER OF ADORATION AND LORD’S PRAYERAll: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy

kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

Prayers of adoration often name particular divine attributes and

actions as we trace the timeline of God’s redemptive actions. After being led in a corporate prayer of

adoration, we will pray the Lord’s Prayer

together.

SCRIPTURE READING Deuteronomy 5:12-15

Leader: Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.

Leader: This is the word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God!

CALL TO CONFESSION 1 John 1:8-9

Leader: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

CORPORATE PRAYER OF CONFESSION Psalm 25:6-7, 11, 16-18

All: Remember Your mercy, O Lord, and Your steadfast love, for they have been from of old. Remember not the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to Your steadfast love remember me, for the sake of Your goodness, O Lord! For Your name’s sake, O Lord, pardon my guilt, for it is great. Turn to me and be gracious to me, for I am lonely and afflicted. The troubles of my heart are enlarged; bring me out of my distresses. Consider my affliction and my trouble, and forgive all my sins. Amen.

SILENT PRAYERS OF CONFESSION

ASSURANCE OF PARDON Micah 7:18-19

Leader: Who is a God like You, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance? He does not retain His anger forever, because He delights in steadfast love. He will again have compassion on us; He will tread our iniquities underfoot. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.

GOD CLEANSES US

PLEASE SIT

Within the context of our covenant relationship

with God, we are invited in safety, not in shame,

to honestly consider our sins.

PLEASE STAND

This is a time of confessing our individual

sins in silence. Please use this time to slow

down, pray, and reflect on your relationship with

God and your neighbor, asking God for renewed

mercy and obedience.

God loves us in spite of our sins. Through

His grace in Christ, He renews, restores, and cleanses us. We

rehearse this truth every week by confessing our

sins corporately and individually.

CONGREGATIONAL UPDATES & CALL TO GIVING

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING AND INTERCESSION

SCRIPTURE READING Mark 2:13-3:6

Leader: Jesus Calls Levi

13 He went out again beside the sea, and all the crowd was coming to Him, and He was teaching them. 14 And as He passed by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth, and He said to him, “Follow me.” And he rose and followed Him.

15 And as he reclined at table in his house, many tax collectors and sinners were reclining with Jesus and His disciples, for there were many who followed Him. 16 And the scribes of the Pharisees, when they saw that He was eating with sinners and tax collectors, said to His disciples, “Why does He eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

17 And when Jesus heard it, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Our giving is both a response of gratitude for God’s generosity toward us and a sign

of faith in God’s future provision. We have an offering plate at each side door so that you

may give your tithes and offerings as you exit.

You may also give online at covenantpres.com/

A Question About Fasting

18 Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting. And people came and said to Him, “Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?” 19 And Jesus said to them, “Can the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. 20 The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in that day. 21 No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. If he does, the patch tears away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear is made. 22 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins—and the wine is destroyed, and so are the skins. But new wine is for fresh wineskins.”

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath

23 One Sabbath He was going through the grainfields, and as they made their way, His disciples began to pluck heads of grain. 24 And the Pharisees were saying to Him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” 25 And He said to them, “Have you never read what David did, when he was in need and was hungry, he and those who were with him: 26 how he entered the house of God, in the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those who were with him?” 27 And He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.”

A Man with a Withered Hand

1 Again He entered the synagogue, and a man was there with a withered hand. 2 And they watched Jesus, to see whether He would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse Him. 3 And He said to the man with the withered hand, “Come here.” 4 And He said to them, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill?” But they were silent. 5 And He looked around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. 6 The Pharisees went out and immediately held counsel with the Herodians against Him, how to destroy Him.

Leader: This is the word of the Lord.

All: Thanks be to God!

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

SERMON Rev. Phil Roach

Lord of Life

THE GREAT THANKSGIVINGLeader: The Lord be with you.

All: And with your spirit.

Leader: Lift up your hearts!

All: We lift them up to the Lord!

Leader: Let us give thanks unto our Lord God.

All: It is right to give Him thanks and praise.

Leader: It is right and good and a joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks unto You, O Lord, Holy Father, Almighty, Everlasting God. Therefore, with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify Your glorious Name, evermore praising You and singing...

Our pastors wear black robes to highlight the

teaching office that they hold. The Bible calls us to submit to those who

have been set apart for the ministry of the

Word. We hope the wearing of a robe is a helpful reminder that

our pastors are set apart as they represent God

through their leadership and preaching.

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION

WORDS OF INSTITUTIONLeader: Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us. Alleluia.

All: Alleluia!

Leader: These are the gifts of God for the people of God. Take these in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on Him in your hearts by faith, and drink, remembering that Christ’s blood has been shed for you!

PARTAKING OF THE ELEMENTS

HYMN Our God, Our Help in Ages Past

Communion is a holy sacrament of the Church. The word “sacrament” is

a translation of a Greek word which means

“mystery.” Baptism and Communion are

the “mysteries” of the church that God uses to powerfully nourish our faith. Communion is not just a ritual or a

memorial, it is fellowship with the risen Christ.

GOD’S TRUTHWho did Jesus come to heal?

What are the purposes of God’s Law?

What angers Jesus in this passage? Why?

Who are the Herodians? Why did they align with the Pharisees? What does this tell us about Jesus’ message?

GOD’S LIFEHow do you see Jesus fighting for your life in this passage?

Augustine said, “You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.” How does this quote relate to Jesus’ claim to be “Lord of the Sabbath”?

Which of the following two ways of looking at the Law belongs to Jesus and which to the Pharisees?1. I obey the Law, therefore I am accepted by God. 2. I am accepted by God, therefore I obey. Which of these two provide the deep rest we long for? Which of these two do you actually believe and live out? In what ways do you struggle to believe God’s love for you is not based on your performance?

GOD’S WAYSHow did Jesus’ healing of the man with the withered hand demonstrate the purpose of the Sabbath? What does it have to do with restoring the broken and the discouraged?

How do you observe the Sabbath? How might this passage give new shape to your understanding and/or practice of the Sabbath?

How does this passage make you know and love Jesus more deeply?
