HSC Exams coming to an end!

Some of our Year 12 students finished their HSC exams this week and as you can see from the photo there are some very happy students!

Bellingen High Leaders of the Future!

On Tuesday 28th

October eight students from Year 9 were selected to attend a GRIP

Leadership Conference alongside many other students from the region. Ms Newhouse,

who coordinated and organised the event, drove us to the C.ex to participate in the

course.

The first session taught us how to build a great team and how to better work together

by getting us to analyse our team dynamic and how our groups behaved. We also

played games such as “paper, scissors, rock” to explain the steps it takes to lead

properly.

The second session told of how we should make the most of the leadership

opportunities and stand up for what we believe in. We were taught to stand up when

there is an opportunity for what is right, for others, and for ourselves.

We were then allowed to choose which course we attended next. The first, “how to

maximise the impact of your events” taught us how to hold an event that successfully

entertains its guests and achieves its set purpose. The other course was “how to

maximise the impact of your communication”, and showed us methods of

communicating information to others in an entertaining and practical way.

Again, we were allowed to attend one of two workshops; the first was “how to lead in

different situations” and saw us learning our own individual style of leadership. The

other course was “how leaders can maintain momentum” and taught the students how

they can continue to lead people without losing enthusiasm or interest.

Overall the conference was entertaining and very helpful, and allowed us all to learn

skills that will greatly benefit us in the future. Thank you to Mrs Hayward who was

unable to attend, and Ms Newhouse, who we are all very grateful for giving us the

opportunity to go to the conference.

Student Environmental Council October/November News

The SEC have been busy with Term 4 projects, including the replanting of the garden near the Science block and raising awareness on the negative effects of plastic and how to reduce its use in daily life - at home and within the school. The SEC has been doing this through the ‘Free

Your Food’ and ‘Plastic Free November’ programs.

Free Your Food/Plastic Free November is a collaboration between Bellingen High School Student Environmental Council, EYE and Kombu, aimed at raising awareness about the effects of plastic in the environment. The idea is to limit our consumption of disposable plastic drink bottles and cling-wrap etc., for the ENTIRE month of November. If you sign up for the challenge you will get a 20% discount on bulk food at Kombu. Check out the article and more photos in this Newsletter. One of the ways we are contributing to Free Your Food is by sewing heaps of recycled material bags to provide alternatives to single use plastic bags. The bags will be donated to the main food retail shops in town. One of the ways you can help is by signing a pledge (see Miss Hill – HSIE Staffroom). A big thank you to the students who have enthusiastically engaged with the Food for Life program by sewing and screen printing reusable bags during their lunchtimes, and thanks to TAS Faculty and Ms Jeanes for allowing us to use the sewing rooms.

SEC students have also re-planted the Kelvin LeBrocq Memorial garden outside the Science block. A big thank you to Ms Hook for donating the plants!

So don’t forget NO PLASTIC NOVEMBER! No plastic cling wrap, plastic bags and plastic bottles.

Boys Cricket

The open boys’ cricket team have played 2 games over recent weeks. The boys

played Dorrigo in the first round and were victorious 170 to 70, with an

outstanding batting performance from Aaron Hickey scoring 46 not out. In their

second round game they travelled to and played against Toormina, normally a

very strong opposition, and again came away winners 156-76, with some

outstanding performances from Jesse Vincent-Ellis (30 not out), Justin Alford

37 and Jonty Neaves with bowling figures of 3-16.

The U14’s team have only played one game against Toormina and strolled to a

comfortable win with a solid all round team performance. The 14’s will play

Orara in the next round this Monday.

A month without plastic……

Bellingen EYE (Environmental Youth Experience), Bellingen High School Student Environmental Council and Kombu Wholefoods are joining forces and launching Free Your Food.

This awesome bunch of young community leaders are up for a challenge! They are pledging to not buy anything that comes wrapped in plastic (packaging, plastic bags etc.) for the whole month of November.

Students involved in Free Your Food are putting in a massive effort by sewing and screen printing 100 recycled material bags over the last few weeks, during lunchtime at school. Thanks so much Miss Jeanes and Miss Hill for the support with this project! These bags will be available to borrow in stores throughout Bellingen during the month of November, initiating the Borrow Me Bag project. Borrow Me Bag aims to help shoppers remember to bring their own bag by lending them one, thus reducing plastic waste.

Join in our challenge to stop using plastic packaging this November and be a part of this youth-led, earth & ocean friendly action!

You can take the free Your Food pledge, in person at Kombu Wholefoods or online. Take the pledge and receive 20% off bulk items at Kombu Wholefoods during the month of November!

You can sponsor the Free Your Food team, in person, at Kombu Wholefoods or online, by

contributing with a donation. Donated funds will support the next Bellingen EYE Camp, which

will provide fun and hands-on education on marine conservation to local young people!

You can also come along to our Cinema Under the Stars Halloween event, featuring the movie Bag It – Is Your Life Too Plastic? at North Bank Community Garden tonight. Event starts at 6:30, movie starts at dusk.

For more information, to take the pledge or donate you can pop into Kombu Wholefoods or please go to http://www.cel.org.au/free-your-food/.

Plastic Free Lunch Box Ideas For Free Your Food – Plastic Free November In line with Free Your Food & Plastic Free November here is a few ideas from the Student Environmental Council for creating plastic free lunches, full of good nutrition while also saving some cash!

Make delicious edible wraps, which can be placed as they are in the lunchbox: salad wraps, dolmades, sushi rolls, rice paper wraps…

Pack ‘em with veg! Think cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, raw green beans, snow peas, carrot sticks - include avocadoes as dips and, of course, any fruit you like!

Buy lunchboxes that are the same size as sandwiches - this avoids the need for cling wrap or plastic bags, or wrap sandwiches in recycled paper or wax paper – or perhaps a banana leaf!

Put leftovers from dinner directly into your lunchbox.

Avoid single serves packed items – such as muesli bars, chips, individually wrapped cookies, juices etc. Buy items bulk and plastic free then package them in reusable containers.

Make your own – Muffins! Cookies! Muesli bars! Yoghurt! Pizza! Hummus! Pasta salads! Crackers! Smoothies!…Your imagination is the limit!

Do not buy bottled water. It is just wrong! Australia's annual use of bottled water generated more than 60,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions - the same amount that 13,000 cars generate over a year. Buy a good refillable metal water bottle instead and fill it with water each day.

Use stainless steel forks and spoons (you can get them from the Op-Shop, so if you lose them it’s not a big deal).

Check out the savings!
