Prenatal DevelopmentPhysical Development• Prenatal Stage- conception-birth
• Conception—when a sperm penetrates the ovum
• Zygote—a fertilized egg- called a zygote until 2 weeks pregnant (“germinal period”)
• Embryonic period—weeks three through eight after conception, called an embryo, develop eyes, ears, nose, mouth, heart, liver, kidney
• Fetal period—two months after conception until birth, called a fetus; 6+ months pregnant-
organs are developed for the most part
• This is the period where we grow the most- newborn baby is 1 BILLION times bigger than it started
