In the Spring of 1991 our club was founded by 12 enthusiasts lookingfor a way to pool their parts and resources to maintain their vintage Volkswagen Cars. Now we are in our 30th year with about 200 members and the premiere Vintage Volkswa-gen club for Central Ohio. We Strive to share knowledge and resources while having plenty of fun. We welcome everyone interested in classic air-cooled as well as newer water-cooled VW products. Annually we host Ohio’s largest Volkswagen Car show & swap-meet ‘Volksfest’ to benefit Childhood Cancer Family Conection; an independent non-profit organization, devoted to the needs of children with cancer.

ThoughTs from a Board memBer Kathy KernHi All, Sorry I don’t have much to say this month except I miss seeing all of you – come to our meetings! I did get to take the bus to a few events and campouts this year, but it’s been different. Family keeps me busy and this month I spent some time in Michigan – on the road again as usual.

Coming up on the 8th will be our October meeting, another parking lot meeting at Tommy’s so bring a chair and take the opportunity to show off your vintage VW a few more times before winter comes to Ohio. What a long strange trip it’s been this year! – Stay safe my friends.

VW Tech... Tips, Tricks, Tools & Repairs

AFC Injection Fuel Pumps and Wire Connections

This month I’m going to talk about the fuel pumps on fuel injected busses from ’75 to ’79 but this information will also apply to other models of VW AFC (Air Flow Controlled) fuel injection. First, the fuel pumps are pretty reliable and generally have a long life; on this model it’s located on the left frame rail near the tank. The fuel filter is located near the pump and should be replaced regularly. When it should be replaced is a matter of opinion, I suggest replacement every year. Filters are cheap and easy to replace, keep a spare (in a clean box) in the bus with you along with the tools to replace it. If it is restricted, it may cause a noisy pump and short pump life along with lack of power and other concerns. If you run high quality fuel from a volume supplier your filters may last a long time, but one bad load of fuel from a little supplier off the beaten path may quickly cause a lot of problems. VW busses and campers commonly sit for long periods of time in the winter; this tends to build moisture in the fuel system from condensation in the tank. Occasionally the pump may freeze up from moisture in the fuel or corrosion inside the rotor portion of the pump. If this happens you may be able to use penetrating oil to free it up.

To test the fuel pressure on this style of injection, there is a tap on the left side of the engine between injectors 3 and 4 where pressure can be measured. Pressure spec is 35-38 with the key on engine off and 28-31psi idling. Testing volume is done at the return line from the pressure regulator, you’ll have to get under the bus to access this port which sticks through the front engine tin. Connect a hose and run the pump, the volume should be about a pint in 30 seconds. Why would you not test volume at the pressure tap? Because at that point there is no restriction and flow would read falsely high.

The pump gets its power via the double relay, which in turn is fed from the air flow meter. A quick tip to trigger the pump on is to open the air flap in the air flow meter with your hand, or pop the black cover off the AFM and move the wiper. Either of these triggers the fuel pump as long as the key is on.

If your bus won’t start and the fuel pump is not operating, check these items:

Start with a normal visual check of the engine compartment and battery looking for loose and corroded terminals, frayed wires, corroded grounds, etc. If you haven’t been diligent with servicing grounds and looking for corroded plugs or loose connectors, this is the time to start. Wiring issues are the #1 cause of no-starts or intermittent problems. If you inspect the engine compartment and see nothing has been touched for years with corrosive fuzz on connections, you will have an uphill battle to make the vehicle reliable.

Wire spades need to have the proper “drag” when disconnecting. It should take several pounds of “pull” to disengage your typical single wire spade connector. If the fit is loose and it slips apart without measurable force it will lose connection and cause intermittent issues that will drive you crazy. This goes back to annual maintenance; connectors that are exposed to the weather should be disconnected, inspected, and cleaned/replaced if not in good shape. If the connector is good visually but just loose, I tighten them by crimping the female sides gently with pliers to tighten the connection. If a previous “technician” has been probing around with a test light or voltmeter, keep an eye open for spread female terminals where he may have jammed a probe tip into the connector which will cause huge headaches. I commonly go one step further and use a Dremel tool with a tiny brass wire wheel to clean both the male and female terminal. If the connector is exposed to the weather a dab of grease will prevent moisture from corroding it. The Dremel brass wire wheels are $3-4 at hardware stores, get a couple as they wear out quickly. Tiny steel wire wheels are too aggressive for brass terminals.

Melted connector bodies or overheated terminals (usually turned black) will call not only for replacement but further testing to find the source of the overload. The fuel pump should only draw about 3 amps, not enough to overload a circuit. If it draws more, replacement is necessary.

Check the terminals on the starter for proper connection and corrosion; this is one of the most overlooked problem areas because it is not easily accessible with the bus on the ground. Inspecting/servicing these terminals should be done as a part of your annual maintenance checkup. Disassemble, clean, and grease them when completed. A small wire wheel in a drill will do a good job, this is probably more than the Dremel will handle.

Verify voltage is being supplied to the fuel pump by checking for power at terminal 88d of the double relay, you can backprobe the connector with a paper clip while it’s connected.

If power is supplied but the pump is not running, check the ground connection at the pump. Also remember a fully charged battery reads 12.6v at room temp, the fuel pump will work at lower voltages but it’s always best to begin with a fully charged battery. That’s all for this month, everyone stay safe and healthy!

It is with great sadness that I share the news of Dorothy Granger's death. Dorothy and her husband Bill were flying their small plane home from lunch when it lost power and crashed into a field in Midland Michigan. Dorothy did not survive the crash, and Bill is continuing treatment and rehabilitation at a hospital in Detroit. Bill and Dorothy were active in our club from the early days. Their Orange Thing was a regular at all the area shows. They were both tireless in their volunteering at Volksfest and other COVVC activities. On a personal note, Bill was my best man at my wedding. Please keep Bill and his son Victor in your prayers. God Speed Dorothy.

The picture on the right is Bill and Dorothy Granger at the 2010 COVVC Banquet. Bill is being silly and Dorothy had her always present smile.

Dear Families, Friends, Donors & Supporters:

Today, COVID-19 has brought all of us extremely difficult times and for many of us, perhaps our lives have forever changed. We are all living with fear, uncertainty, despair and sadly for some, great loss. Whether a friend of our organization or a family we served, you have all most likely been touched by cancer and felt its great burden. And in the time of this pandemic I’m sure many of you are re-living those feelings once again. We can only hope that this “new nor-mal” will eventually fill us with wellness, respect, understanding and empathy for each other. Our empathy began a humble organization back in 1982, when my husband Nick and I found-ed Kids ‘n Kamp. From the start we designed every program and service around what Childhood Cancer Families needed, launching the first non-profit to serve not only the child-patient, but embracing the entire family. Though we were never the wealthiest organization, we always tried to be the most compassionate. We loved it. We loved the children. We always loved helping, what-ever the need.

Yet, change comes hard and sometimes remains unmercifully difficult. Presently, Kids ‘n Kamp is facing a stark reality. Following months of conversations, meetings and prayers, my son, Brad and I, have decided, after 38 years of serving Childhood Cancer Families in central Ohio, to re-purpose our beloved organization so it may continue its proud legacy and passionate calling for years to come.

With our Board’s approval, we have established a Donor Advised Fund at The Columbus Foun-dation to benefit select Childhood Cancer organizations in memory of my cherished husband, Nick. Our Fund, which has not yet been named, will be under our family’s close supervision pro-viding financial support at our discretion to organizations that we feel best serve children and their families, in a manner aligned with our four decades as a devoted non-profit organization. We have begun an internal wind down of the organization to be completed by the close of the year. During this process we hope to financially strengthen our newly established Fund at The Columbus Foundation and for this we need your help. Donations made at any level are deeply appreciated, whether you are honoring special occasions, celebrating holidays, remembering loved ones, or commemorating dates close to your heart.

Contribute at http://giveccfc.org/donate/ and click the “Donate Now” button at the bottom of the page, or send a check to: Kids ‘n Kamp | 3440 Olentangy River Rd. | Columbus, Ohio 43202.With your continued support, our Mission lives on. Happy October everyone!

I sit here sharpening my big purple crayon so I may begin writing this literary masterpiece and I’m pondering this summer’s activities.

Who knew we could do everything in our lives virtually?

We now have virtual weddings, baby announcements, even funerals – what’s next, virtual root canals?

This brings me to the new found idea of virtual car shows! Now don’t get me wrong, I love a good car show, but seriously who can be satisfied with a virtual car show??

Yesterday I was fortunate to go to the Cincinnati VW Porsche Family Reunion, first show of the year for me aside from 1 Saturday morning cruise-in type get together.

I have always loved this show with the mix of VW and Porsches. The people are great, the cars are great and it’s so much fun just people watching the different types of folks and figuring out which group they belong to!

As the day wore on the car show field filled to maximum capacity, there were cars parked everywhere, with people strolling through all day long. Great show, great crowd!

This brings me to this thought: there are some things that you cannot do virtually. Oh, sure you can have a car show online, but till you hear a guy fire up a 200 horsepower turbo VW or stand next to a 6 cylinder Porsche as it rolls by, or check out the interior smell of a vintage VW or Porsche, you just cannot appreciate the experience unless you are physically there.

Now to my next point of business… Coming up on October 24th and 25th the New Beetle and Beetle groups will be hosting the 8th annual ‘OCTOBER BEETLE BACK OF THE DRAGON GTG AND RALLY ‘. The drive takes you thru 438 curves in 36 miles long and has 3500 foot of elevation.

This GTG is for 98 thru 2019 New Beetles and Beetles, this will be our maiden voyage down this road. We usually do the spring Tail of the Dragon in NC/Tenn, but since that was cancelled this year due to the pandemic; we are venturing over the back instead.

The host hotel is the Best Western of Wytheville, in Wytheville, VA. It looks to be a blast and the fall colors should be in full color for us.

For more info on this you can visit the Facebook page called October Beetle Back of the Dragon GTG and Rally. It’s also on the newbeetle.org Facebook page, or contact me at [email protected]

For now, I’m off for my virtual Colonoscopy; tune in next month for pictures and details!

Till then I will see you down by the waterfront!Jerry O “Bugman”
