Directors’ Report

The month of October has been a busy one with Mental Illness Awareness Week happening, and the different community events that Pathways participated in for it. We have had some in house staffing changes, with Lisa McWhinnie accepting the position of Housing Program Manager, and then Laura Clarke, accepting the Membership Manager position. These two staff have been with the Clubhouse 15 years, and we wish them continued success in their new roles. Steveston Pharmacy was kind enough to return again on Oct 22nd and administer flu shots to our members and staff. We thank them for helping us all stay healthy! The Board, staff and members at Pathways have been busy getting things ready for our annual Building Pathways for Hope Fundraiser which will take place Nov.5th at the River Rock. On November 21st from 11:00am to 1:30pm, the Richmond Jewish Day School and Az Zahraa Muslim School along with the RCMP, will be distributing bagged lunches, and free clothing. Join us on the 4th floor patio outside!

Food & Fun Unit Report

October was a month of spooky socials. We went to the haunted house, watched Halloween movies, carved pumpkins and of course we had the great Halloween Dance!

October was also the month we rolled out our new menu. The fall menu is full of international comfort foods. We have Mapo Tofu on rice, Coq au Vin, (which is a chicken stew cooked in wine), and some Salmon Wellingtons cooked in puff pastry. Our sides are home-made kimchi, apple-pear crisp, corn bread and roasted autumn veggies. We have chicken enchilada at the sand-wich station along with a meatloaf sandwich and brie apple cranberry sandwich. This is a stellar menu folks and we hope there is something there to make every tummy happy.

Ma + Pa’s Meatloaf - Meatloaf, Swiss cheese, pickled onion, mayo and lettuce.

Kimchi *V *GF - We made this kimchi ourselves okay...try it! Kimchi is a pickled fermented Korean cabbage dish.

Apple Pear Crisp *V - This is a celebration of fall! Apples and pears sliced and cooked with a buttery brown sugar and oatmeal top-ping. Just say YES!

First of all we need to say so long to our Manager of 10

years Lisa Frick (McWhinnie). Lisa has been a kind,

supportive manager and we are going to miss her so

much. Fortunately she is only moving one floor up.

Lisa has taken on the position of Housing Manager.

Secondly we want to welcome our new Manager, Laura

Clarke. Laura is coming to us all the way from the Food

and Fun Unit on the 4th floor. She has been the kitchen

manager for 5 years. We look forward to her energy,

new ideas and all her cool socks.

Our Unit has been busy helping with the Building

Pathways for Hope. There were hundreds of chocolates

made, bagged and tagged. A crew of members, led by

Mike T. put together an awesome video for the dinner.

50/50 tickets were put into strips. And other duties as

needed.

Tours seem to be picking up, Especially for our Young

Adult Program.

It was nice to see

We welcomed back Jocelyn and Veronica from the Blundell Centre’s Vancity. They showed us some of the popular financial scams going around these days and what to watch out for so we don’t get duped. It was very informative and showed us how sophisticated scammers are getting. Here’s what one of our members, Mashood, thought of the presentation: It taught me how I can improve financially. However, it was very important to learn how to protect yourselves financially, especially if something is to happen unexpectedly such as death. They taught me what types of scams are occurring and how to avoid it. They also taught me when a person may take advantage of me financially, such as a person posing in online websites. I find it useful and how to protect myself from uncertain events. As the seasons change, so does our staffing. We would like to congratulate Tanya who is now our new Program Director, welcome Lisa who joins our unit as the new Housing Manager and Laura who will be managing the Membership and Business Unit. Join us for out next D&D on Tuesday November 19th at 1:30pm when BCIT Nurses will be coming to talk about Fall Prevention. Then the following day a dietician will be dropping by at 10:30am. Please mark your calendars and make it a point to come.

My name is Steve Badman, I have had a rough life. I am good now, that is if I remember to take my medication on time. The biggest thing is when I became a member at Pathways Clubhouse. By meeting members, I have more friends than I ever had. I can approach any member with bad stuff because we have been through the same stuff. I can talk with any one of the staff here at Pathway’s Clubhouse.

Pathway’s helped me get an awesome home at Alexandra Court. They helped get my PDP. I owe Pathways Clubhouse a lot. For making my life so much better than it was.

The corner by Enigma

I get off the sky train at Broadway City Hall. There are 3 different things happening there at different times. One is a beggar, begging for food money. The other is a busker, playing the guitar and singing. Another is an enterprising man who sells baklava I call him the baklava man, he has a bill board advertising his goods and calls out “Baklava”. One day I will try his delicious baklava. At times there are free samples of pop too. It’s a busy corner.

When I was growing up, I lived life like a normal person, working hard for my goals, having dreams of who I will become, and making each day as productive and fun at the same time. I never saw myself as a person who is suffering with mental health and though that grey area of my life was as normal as anybody. As a person who lived in the Philippines and the mentality of people their thought that “mental illness” is the decease only of those who are rich and famous, that comes along the same bracket of those who are “stressed”. Growing up I never paid much attention of my own personal problems and how I would deal with mental illness. I always would think that may be I had too much free time and I need to find ways to be busier even though I had a full plate of things to do already. After having my 25th birthday, I realize that I really need to ask for help on how I would handle this thing called mental illness business. All this started when my

mom passed away back in 2011 and I went through the steps of grieving.

Leading to my own depression, not will to go outside of the house to go to work or even the things that I need to do at home like chores, and talking to people. My father was really my hero for seeing things that I didn’t see. We started to make a plan for me to get out of my depression. Starting a new job, having a new place to live at, and a new set of goals for my life started to have a big impact in my life. I continuously get my self help and hit new points of high towards my life and also help others in the process. The biggest help I think towards this issue of mental health is talking and discussing how to get help, praying for a better decision making that we do to our daily lives, and lastly communicating to those who support and love you. Also serving and helping those who need help as well. Each and everyday will always have a better day than the past we have lived and the future where many have been pursuing for. That’s why, Each day is a gift that’s why they call it present.
