Whitman staff are not permitted to release a student to anyone who is not listed on the child’s profile.

If you would like to add a person to your child’s profile, authorizing them to pick up your child, you must do so in person at the Whitman Office. Thank you for assisting us in ensuring your child’s safety and your alleviating problems in advance.

Quien esta Autorizado?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ De acuerdo con la política de MPS, solo las personas que figuran en el perfil de un estudiante pueden recoger a un niño de la escuela. El personal de Whitman no tiene permitido entregar a un alumno a ninguna persona que no figure en el perfil del niño. Si desea agregar a una persona al perfil de su hijo/a, autorizándolo a que recoja a su hijo, debe hacerlo en persona en la Oficina de Whitman. Gracias por ayudarnos a garantizar la seguridad de su hijo y sus problemas de alivio por adelantado.

From the Health Office:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Any parent who received a letter from the Health Office regarding immunizations, please get the immunizations completed and returned to the Health Office as soon as possible. We have an upcoming FLU shot clinic get your students theirs! (3rd – 6th ONLY) It will be the week of October 21st. We want to make sure all students stay healthy. If you have any questions, please contact the Health Office at 480-472-5056 or 480-472-5057.

Boo! Are you ready for the Scare Fair?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Join us at the annual Whitman Scare Fair! There

will be games, food, a tractor train ride, and more. Bring the whole family, and dress up in

costume. It’s going to be a spooooktacular time!

Dear Whitman Families,

October 14th begins Parent Teacher Conference Week. Please prepare ahead of time so you are able to participate in your child's conference.

Conferences establish two-way communication with you and your child’s teacher. The teacher also gets an opportunity to learn more about your child. It gives you, the parent or guardian, an opportunity to know just how your child is performing in school. You should leave the conference with ideas about how you can help your child focus on specific areas of learning at home. This year we are focusing our learning on AVID strategies, technology in the classroom, and the newly adopted state standards.

Before your conference, take time with your child and ask specific questions about school. “What do you think your teacher will say?” “What are you most proud of?” Assure your child that after conferences you will sit down at home, talk about it and make a plan of action.

We look forward to seeing each of you on campus during Whitman’s Parent Involvement Week/Conferences October 14th - October 18th. Please be aware that school will be dismissed at 1:00 p.m. that entire week.

Important Transportation Information!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Any daily changes in transportation for your

child, needs to be called into the office. The office will notify the teacher of any

changes. Please do not leave a message on the teacher's phone. It will not be checked until after school. Notify the office of any

changes as soon as possible, or by 12:00 p.m. that day.

STORY BOOK PARADE

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Whitman’s “Story Book Parade” will be held on October 31st from 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. All of Whitman’s classrooms will be participating in this annual event. Students will either be dressed as a character from their favorite book, or in many cases classrooms will be dressed as characters from a favorite book of their class.

We hope to see many of our Whitman families at the parade which will be held on the playground closest to the gym.

El 14 de octubre comienza la Semana de Conferencia de Padres y Maestros. Prepárese con anticipación para que pueda participar en la conferencia de su hijo/a.

Las conferencias establecen comunicación bidireccional con usted y el maestro de su hijo/a. El maestro también tiene la oportunidad de aprender más sobre su hijo/a. Debe salir de la conferencia con ideas sobre cómo puede ayudar a su hijo/a a enfocarse en áreas específicas de aprendizaje en el hogar. Este año estamos enfocando nuestro aprendizaje en las estrategias de AVID, la tecnología en el aula y los estándares estatales recientemente adoptados.

Antes de su conferencia, tómese un tiempo con su hijo/a y haga preguntas específicas sobre la escuela. "¿Qué crees que dirá tu maestra?" "¿De qué estás más orgulloso?" Asegúrele a su hijo/a que después de las conferencias se sentará en su casa, hablará de ello y elaborará un plan de acción.

HISTORIAS Desfile de Libros

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ El "Desfile del Libro de Cuentos" de Whitman se llevará a cabo el 31 de octubre de 8:30 a 10:00 a.m. Todos los salones de Whitman participarán en este evento anual. October Healthy Tips ~Get a flu shot to prevent yourself from getting the flu. ~Limit the amount of Halloween candy your kid(s) eats to one or two pieces a day. ~Involve yourself in your child's activities. Go on walks as the weather starts to cool off. ~Wash your hands with soap and warm water regularly to prevent the spread of germs.

Capture The Flag

How to Play

1. Divide players into two teams, and divide

playing area into equal-sized territories, one

for each team.

2. Gather flags: scarves, or even socks, will all

work. You will need a different color for each

team..

3. Place one flag into each territory. It can be

mostly hidden, but some part of it must be

visible. Once it's placed, the flag can't be

moved by its home team.

4. When the game begins, players try to cross

into opposing teams' territories to grab their

flag.

5. When a player is in an opposing team's

territory, and he is tagged by them, he must

perform a task—say, five jumps or three push-

ups—before returning to his own territory.

6. The game ends when one team has

successfully grabbed the flag(s) from the other

team or teams and returned to their own

territory.

* Any time a player crosses back to her own team's

territory, she is safe and can't be captured.

October Recipe: Chicken Tortilla Soup

Ingredients • 1 tablespoon olive oil

• 1/2 large sweet onion, chopped

• 1 red bell pepper, chopped

• 2 large carrots, chopped

• 2 tablespoons chili powder

• 4 cups no-salt-added chicken broth

• 1 (28 oz.) can no-salt-added diced tomatoes

• 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, thinly sliced

• 3.5 ounces unsalted corn tortilla chips, divided

• 1 avocado, chopped

• 1 jalapeño, seeded, diced (optional)

Directions 1. Heat oil in large pot over medium-high heat. Add

onion, pepper and carrots, and let cook 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until browned. Add chili powder and mix well.

2. Add broth and tomatoes. Cover and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce to low, add chicken and half of tortilla chips. Simmer 3-4 minutes, or until chicken is cooked through.

3. Top soup with remaining tortilla chips, avocado and jalapeno (optional).

October Snack:

Apple Lady Bugs

- Cut apple in half

- Place raisin on top

- Add pretzel sticks for eyes

Consejos saludables de octubre ~ Vacunarse contra la gripe para evitar

contraer la gripe ~ Limite la cantidad de caramelos de Halloween niño (s) comer una o dos piezas al día. ~ Participe en las actividades de su hijo/a. Salga a caminar mientras el clima comienza a refrescarse. ~ Lávese las manos con agua tibia y jabón regularmente para evitar la propagación de gérmenes.

Captura la Bandera

Como Jugar:

1. Divida a los jugadores en dos equipos y divida

el área de juego en territorios de igual

tamaño, uno para cada equipo.

2. Reúna banderas: bufandas, o incluso

calcetines, todos funcionarán. Necesitarás un

color diferente para cada equipo.

3. Coloque una bandera en cada territorio. Puede

estar oculto en su mayoría, pero una parte

debe estar visible. Una vez que se coloca, el

equipo local no puede mover la bandera.

4. Cuando comienza el juego, los jugadores

intentan cruzar a los territorios de los equipos

oponentes para agarrar su bandera.

5. Cuando un jugador se encuentra en el

territorio de un equipo contrario y es marcado

por él, debe realizar una tarea, por ejemplo,

Receta de octubre: Sopa de Tortilla de Pollo

Ingredientes • 1 cucharada de aceite de oliva

• 1/2 cebolla dulce grande, picada

• 1 pimiento rojo, picado

• 2 zanahorias grandes, picadas

• 2 cucharadas de chile en polvo

• 4 tazas de caldo de pollo sin sal añadida

• 1 (28 onzas) de tomates picados sin sal añadida

• 2 pechugas de pollo deshuesadas y sin piel, en rodajas finas

• 3.5 onzas de tortillas de maíz sin sal, divididas

• 1 aguacate, picado

• 1 jalapeño, sin semillas, cortado en cubitos (opcional)

Direcciones 1.Caliente el aceite en una olla grande a fuego medio- alto. Agregue la cebolla, el pimiento y las zanahorias, y deje cocinar durante 3-4 minutos, revolviendo ocasionalmente, hasta que se doren. Agregue el chile en polvo y mezcle bien. 2.Agregue caldo y tomates. Cubra y hierva a fuego alto. Reduzca a bajo, agregue el pollo y la mitad de los chips de tortilla. Cocine a fuego lento durante 3-4 minutos, o hasta que el pollo esté bien cocido. 3. Sirva la sopa con los totopos restantes, aguacate y jalapeño (opcional).

NAEP – Native American Education Program

Ya’at’eeh- Hello, my name is Mica Begody. I am of the Dine/Navajo tribe. I am the Instructional Assistant for

the Native American Education Program here at Whitman Elementary School. My goal at Whitman is to support

our Native American students and encourage their educational goals and needs.

I am excited to work with our Native American students and look forward to meeting them throughout the

Ya’at’eeh- Hola, mi nombre es Mica Begody. Soy de la Tribu Dine / Navajo. Soy la Asistente de Instrucción para

el Programa de Educación para Nativos Americanos aquí en la Escuela Primaria Whitman. Mi objetivo en

Whitman es apoyar a nuestros estudiantes nativos americanos y fomentar sus metas y necesidades educativas.

Estoy emocionado de trabajar con nuestros estudiantes Nativos Americanos y espero poder reunirme con ellos
