Dear People of God at Emmanuel,

It has been a treat to see Emmanuel begin functioning in full swing

following the relatively quiet time of summer. Educational programming,

music rehearsals, additional worship times, and Wednesday night suppers

– it’s all up and running. And I continue to learn how we do things here at

Emmanuel. What a gifted congregation you are! I am so fortunate to be

among you.

Annual Financial Stewardship Campaign

Our Annual Financial Stewardship Campaign is off and running. You are

invited to partner with God and with this community of faith in carrying

out God’s work here in Webster Groves. Our goal is to have a total of

$660,000 pledged to fund ministry at Emmanuel in 2019. This is a 7%

increase over last year – an ambitious goal, but not an unattainable one.

To all of you, who have pledged in the past, thank you. If all of us

increase our pledge amount by 7%, we will easily hit our goal. If you have

never pledged, please consider it. No gift is too small. And every gift

matters. Please look for more information in your physical mailbox, the

Sunday bulletin inserts, and the weekly newsletter. Then prayerfully

consider accepting the invitation to partnership through your financial

contribution. We will collect pledge cards on Sunday, October 21. You

can also pledge by visiting our website.

Vestry Direction

One of the things Emmanuel was clear about when you called me was a

need to shape our call and vision for the next chapter in our lives together.

Your Vestry has begun some foundational work for discerning this. I have

asked them to read “Transforming Congregation Culture” by Anthony

Robison and we are discussing several chapters each month. The book is

about how 21st century, North American culture has shifted and how the

Church must re-examine the way we think and the way we do things if we

are to continue to be faithful to God’s call for us. It’s an important – and

very readable – book. If you’d like a copy, let me know and I will get one

for you. I invite you to join us in that reading and conversation.

At the Vestry meeting this month, I presented a list of Emmanuel’s hopes

and needs that I have heard from you. I compiled these from information

gathered at our small group meetings, one-on-one conversations, the vestry

itself, and the staff. I asked the vestry to choose three of these as priorities

for me to focus on for the last quarter of 2018. Not surprisingly, their first

choice was for me to focus on getting Emmanuel staffed for effective

ministry, and to find and call an Associate Rector.

FOOD CENTER REPORT

For the month of October the food center is asking for contributions of canned tuna and chicken to maintain our shelf

stock. Please consider a donation to assist those of our community in need.

Just drop them in the food basket as you enter the front doors in the narthex Sunday morning or place them in the food basket outside the Food Center on the pew under the parish bulletin board.

Their second choice was to focus on supporting and enhancing our Adult education opportunities. How we

are formed as disciples effects everything else we do. They are wise to recognize this. Finally, the vestry

asked me to focus on helping us all answer the question “Why are we here?” This will be foundational for

understanding our call to this time and in this place.

So why are we here? For what reason does Emmanuel exist? Over the next months we will be exploring

some helpful sources as we come to an answer to that question. Scripture will guide us. Our tradition of

faith and the Book of Common Prayer will lead as well. We’ll explore both the 21st century context and the

Webster Groves context. We’ll talk about church size and how that effects our expectations of each other

and of the clergy. We won’t find the answers to all these things in three months, but the vestry has set this

as a priority, laying significant ground work for the future.

Asking that “Why” question can be frightening. Because maybe we’re not sure if we will like how we

answer it. For example, I am married to my husband Peter for a lot of reasons. I love him and have since

we met. He is a quality human being. He understands me and my sense of humor. He is the father of my

children. He’s an excellent cook. We have a long history together. We share values. The list goes on and

on. But, if you asked me that question and all I could say was “He feeds me dinner”, that would force me to

face the fact that our relationship was pretty empty.

I have a strong suspicion that as we ask ourselves “Why are we here?”, we may find some places where

that answer isn’t what we’d like it to be. But I know you well enough at this point to also suspect we will

find all sorts of depth and beauty, all sorts of ways you love God and want to love God more, all sorts of

ways you serve God in each other and in your neighbor and ways you want to be faithful in that. And those

answers will give us joy and shape our lives together moving forward. I also know that one reason we are

here is because Emmanuel is God’s church, which God loves and keeps. Fear not! We’ve got this (or,

rather, God does)!

New Vestry Appointee

The Vestry has appointed Davis Allen to fulfill the unexpired term of Dick

Clark. Davis and Penny and their grown sons, James and Daniel, have been

at Emmanuel since 1994. You've seen or heard Davis in choir, as a lector a

chalice bearer, at Men's Bible Study, in Play Readers, and as hilarious

preacher, The Rev. Throckmorton, in Mardi Gras!

Davis owns Age at Home Care, a client focused registry of home compan-

ion caregivers. He is indeed a man of many talents! Thank you, Davis for

adding Vestry to your list of involvement at Emmanuel!

OCTOBER INGATHERING

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Emmanuel will be in gathering requested supplies for

Lydia’s House, a place working in faith to end domestic violence by being a place of healing and a voice of

hope for abused women and their children.

We will celebrate St. Francis of Assisi Feast Day by having a Pet Blessing service at 5:30 p.m. Bring

your “church ready” dogs, cats, birds, for the service and a blessing. This service will be done in the

Memorial Garden.


The Annual Financial Stewardship Campaign

has begun.

The theme, Abundant Joy ~ Overwhelming Generosity is based

on 2 Corinthian 8:1-7. On Sunday, October 7 the preacher will

be this year’s chair, Richard Keyes, at all services.

You will receive a pledge card in the mail the week of October

8, and on Sunday, October 21, we ask you bring your pledge cards to church. It is our tradition here to

bring pledge cards to the Sunday services and present them at the altar during the offertory. If you will

not be here to drop off your card, below are other ways to make a pledge.

You can set-up a recurring payment online on Emmanuel’s website by using online Giving. Scroll

to the bottom of the homepage to see the Give online icon. Click on that icon and setup an account

to pay by credit or debit. You can select current year pledge, pledge pre-payment or prior year

pledge. Setting up a recurring donation WILL NOT create a PLEDGE to be recorded. If you chose to set

up a recurring payment, please notify the finance office at [email protected].

Visit our website, and download a pledge card form. Once completed, email to Theresa Grumke at

[email protected]. Or use your own electronic banking. For you techies our there,

please know we are investigating additional ways to give electronically, and securely.

BOTTOM LINE...for us to know you are pledging, we need a CARD turned in or emailed!

Emmanuel “swag” is available for purchase. We have cool, new bags....canvas bags and coffee

mugs. These were created for visitor welcome gifts, but we ordered in quantities that will allow parishioner

to purchase. We'd like to sell you the "package" of a bag and a mug. That price will be $15. Mugs and

bags sold individually will be $10 each. Look for a table set up soon either on Sundays or during

Wednesday night dinners sometime in the future!

Sunday, September 30 Sr. High Youth will tell everyone about their summer mission trip to

Cherokee Nation.

Sunday, October 7 “Children placed in the foster care system are among the most vulnerable

in our community.” Parishioner, Donna Erickson, MSW, will speak to us

about the foster care system and her work at SSM Cardinal Glennon.

October 14 Matt Schunke and Laurie Anzilotti will explore our baptismal vows &

traditions.

October 21 Junior High Youth will tell us about their experience this past summer at

Heifer Ranch


PUMPKIN CARVING SUNDAY, OCTOBER 28 3:45-5:15 P.M. Bring your tools, your pumpkins and come

shape-up those gourds for Halloween. All

ages of kids and adults are welcome.

(all talents too!)

We will have tables for you to carve on and

candles to light them up!

At 5:00 p.m. we’ll take all the pumpkin creations to

the Memorial Garden

for display and have a Vesper Service.

(Vespers is a short end of day service.)

Melanie & Chris Slane announcing they will be moving to

Cincinnati, and one from Jenny Hulen about how that change will be

handled. AND below Jenny’s letter is an announcement about

Theresa Grumke joining the staff at Financial Assistant.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

As you now have read, The Rev. Melanie Slane has accepted a call to the Episcopal Church of the Re-

deemer in Cincinnati, Ohio, and the Rev. Chris Slane is pursuing ministry and educational opportuni-

ties there as well. Melanie, Chris, Teil and Arlo’s last Sunday with us will be Sunday, October 28.

The leadership and pastoral support Chris and Melanie have provided, especially during Emmanuel’s

transition time, have been particularly helpful and we are grateful to them for it. During the coming

weeks we will have the opportunity, both individually and as a community, to say goodbye to them,

and to express our appreciation for all they have done.

Melanie has had primary responsibility for our children’s formation programming and has built that

program into a true strength here at Emmanuel. She has organized our Lay Eucharistic Visitors so that

those who cannot be with us on Sunday remain connected to us by the sacrament. Chris has led us to

welcome and integrate newcomers, supported our Adult Forum, and led Education For Ministry,

equipping the saints for ministry. Both have shared in the celebration of Holy Eucharist, in preaching

the Good News of God in Christ, and in caring for the congregation through pastoral visits, rites, and

friendships. They are both very talented, gifted priests and Cincinnati will be a better place for their

presence there. I am excited for Melanie and Chris as a new expression of their ministries opens up

before them.

I have been in contact with Bishop Wayne Smith and Canon Joe Chambers to begin planning for addi-

tional clergy support as we search for a permanent Associate Rector to join Emmanuel in ministry.

This process will be greatly simplified compared to the rector search Emmanuel undertook to bring me

here. We will, however, cast a very wide net so we can call the person whose gifts and experience fit

Emmanuel’s call at this time and in this place.

Please join me in expressing hearty congratulations to Chris and Melanie as we bless and send them

forth from Emmanuel.

Please welcome Theresa Grumke to the staff as Financial Assistant! Theresa

and her family lived in Webster until a recent move to Clayton. Theresa is a

member at Webster United Methodist Church on Bompart and served as

financial secretary and treasurer there. She was an active volunteer in Webster

School District, and as an OASIS tutor in Webster and St. Louis City. And she

most recently has been a cuddler at Mercy NICU. Theresa will be working

part-time and will handle all the accounts payable/receivable, assist with data input, statements, and

Things to do and Ways to participate during October

Metropolitan Congregations United, Break the Pipleline Campaign invites you to a forum entitled No

More Sitting Out: Reviving Local Democracy on Sunday, October 7 at 3:00 pm. The forum will convene

in four locations at that time, including a location in Webster Groves at Peace UCC, 204 E. Lockwood. "

We’ll hear from our school district administrators and the police on how our children are being treated. We

will also launch a final push toward the November mid-terms and getting a win on our issues: CLEAN and

RUM."

October 7 Crop Hunger Walk and Concert! Walk 1 or 3 mile route star ting at Eden Seminary.

Registration at 4:30, walk 5:00 p.m. Holy Crepe Food Truck will be onsite 4-7 p.m. and multiple

musicians will perform. You can donate to Crop Walk at or donate to a team. Dale Penrose is looking to

October 11 Episcopal City Mission Moment in Time Gala. Come help change lives. Make plans

now to join Episcopal City Mission (ECM) for its annual Moment in Time Gala fundraising event,

“Touching Lives with Hope and Healing”. Tickets are $135. If you’d like to attend, please see Mary Jane

Kuhn or Mark Jordan.

October 20 Deaconess Anne House Trivia Night. Emmanuel will be the location for their first Tr ivia

Night. Please email Jillian Smith at [email protected] if you wish to buy a table to join a table. $10

per person/$100 for table of 10 Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Trivia 6-9 p.m. Bring your own snacks! Proceeds

will benefit the St. Louis Branch of Episcopal Service Corps.

Volunteer Opportunities

October 6 Emmanuel needs volunteers to help prepare and serve the community Peace Meal at

St. John’s Tower Grove. (on Arsenal) Times to volunteer are 2-4 p.m. or 4-6 p.m. Please call the office at

314-961-2393 to sign up!

Miss Carol’s Breakfast happens every Saturday morning at Chr ist Church Cathedral at 7 :00 a.m.

Mart Mitchell coordinates volunteers who donate hard boiled eggs once a month. Mart also picks up (at

closing time) on Friday nights left over bread and pastries from Panera on Manchester Road, just west of I-

270, and takes to the breakfast. Each person who comes to the Cathedral for breakfast takes a bag with

them of 2 eggs, a banana and a pastry. And while there the folks enjoy coffee and a pastry. If you would

like to help with the bread pickup or be added to the list of egg volunteers, please contact Mart at

Webster-Rock Hill Ministries Tutoring program has begun again. Each week volunteers tutor kids

from K through grade 8 on Tuesday and Thursday 3:30-5:30 p.m. Each wee they need healthy snacks! If

you are able to purchase, prepare or deliver snacks on a Tuesday or Thursday for 20-25 kids, please let

Laura McCord know ([email protected] or 314-738-9139). The Tutors would be most grateful!

Fellowship Dinners happen every Wednesday through November 14. Chr istine Remming and

Phyllis Newcomb plan, buy and prepare dinners with a cast of volunteers! Check out Sign-Up Genius to

Flower Delivery happens every Sunday after the 10:30 a.m. service. Altar Guild members re-arrange

the altar flowers to be delivered to parishioners. Flowers are sent to someone ill, just out of the hospital,

for a birthday, to someone bereaved, for a wedding anniversary or to thank someone! Pick up the flowers

ABOUT THE PARISH FAMILY

The 60th Webster Groves Rotary Club Pancake Festival is on Friday October 5.

You will get all the pancakes you can eat, plus eggs, bacon,

applesauce and your choice of beverages for only $8.00 per

ticket…..one adult or two children.

This is the major fund raiser for the Rotary Club of Webster

Groves, with proceeds going to support many local projects,

including the Webster Groves High School Robotics Team

and soccer teams; college scholarships; Webster-Rock Hill

Ministries, and Rotary Youth Exchange. Our support of

Rotary International programs address polio, literacy, micro-

financing, clean water, Shelterbox, and much, much more.

The festival will be held at Webster Hills Methodist's Christian Life Center at Lockwood & Berry Road,

directly across Berry Road from the church....there's plenty of parking!

Choose Lunch (11:00 to 1:00) or Dinner (4:00 to 8:00)...you will not leave hungry!

This year's official Rotary International theme is Be the Inspiration with Rotary.... a worthy goal, to say

the least. Come support our efforts!
